Hello mate! Where do I start...? Well, we were craving some Mexican food during our visit to Queenstown this past week. We happened to walk by Coyote Grill and it caught our attention. We decided to eat there after we had surveyed the area. So...after deciding to eat there, we enter the domain and my wife and I were greeted and were seated by a nice young lady. We placed our order and started out with the salsa trio. The chips were very good and the dipping sauces and cheese and guacamole were good to the taste buds. So far, so good and we ordered more chips. My beef fajita order arrives then my wife's enchilada. First, my fajita did not look fajita-ish. It looked like a BBQ chopped steak. The meat was doused with a dark colored and gooey sauce. Along with it were tortillas and guacamole and some cream(?) and tomato sauce. The main item, the beef, in my opinion did not come close to a "fajita" style dish that I have ever seen in my entire Hispanic life. I was hoping that my first bite would tell me otherwise that all was good regardless of looks. Unfortunately, I have to say that the meat was waaaaaaay off in flavor and condiments in a basic perspective. Overall, the meat tasted sweet with the glaze sauce and just missed the mark. The basic ingredients for just about any Mexican and/or Hispanic food should be salt, pepper, cumin and some garlic, then at times when grilling, lime or lemon juice. The tortillas were not the best but I wouldn't have minded them if the beef had been prepared to be more authentic.
My wife's enchilada came out looking great, an enchilada with rice and beans... sadly, she ended up eating only about 10% of the meal. As soon as she dug into the enchilada, large chunks of meat in a black/grey sauce came out. She expected the beef to have been shredded and not in large hunks, but the biggest problem.... what was that sauce??! We had never seen a gritty black soupy sauce like that in an enchilada before. The taste was VERY unappealing. She said it tasted like kidney pie wrapped in a tortilla. Topped off with too much cheese = not edible and the black beans were over cooked and tasteless. She did like the rice, and that is about all she ate on her plate.
I usually rate a Mexican restaurant or Latin restaurant by choosing dishes that I know should be easy to make. When altering a dish, it should be made known to the patron so that they can be ready to expect some possible overwhelming differences. read more
