    Burnt Crawfish
    Ashley C.

Last evening in Queenstown so I decided to splurge. Unfortunately was very disappointed. Our server only offered me a 700g Crawfish instead of other smaller sizes. Nevertheless when it arrived, it was overcooked (charred/burnt). He never came back around to check on us so I couldn't send it back. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on the crawfish. The hint should have been the slow and poor service. I'll not come back nor recommend coming here.

Very cozy indoors, with soft lighting with a rustic feel. The fireplace was a nice touch while it was chilly outside. The service was fantastic, and they were really attentive. Although a bit on the price was on the high side, the lobster was delicious and perfectly cooked! Make it a point to try their seafood clam chowder, some of the best I've had!

Definitely one of the better English breakfasts I've had! The service was good. Music was a bit too loud, I had to move tables so I could eat my breakfast without top 40 blasting in my ears.

In the shopping mall & so glad it was recommended to us

My friend & I went there today around 3 & thankfully lunch was served to 4 and happy hour (sadly only $3 off cocktails) started @ 3. Marjie got Jack Daniels; a very small serving and I got one of their signature cocktails that was outstanding. We both had the lamb which was served w nice salad and French fries. Wish I had asked for the fries 'crispy' but everything else was spectacular!! The chef included a rosemary sauce that was outstanding and I asked for & received mint sauce ; much thicker and sweeter than back in the US. You canNOT go wrong ordering their lamb here!! Highly recommend except whiskey portion size.

This was a great place with awesome ambience. When we arrived in Queenstown from Sydney, my hubby wanted to make sure we eat lamb, since most of the lamb meats in the US is from New Zealand. So found this highly rated restaurant and ordered a rack of lamb, garlic bread and mussels. The lamb meat was so tender and tasty. The mussels were amazing while dipping the garlic bread on the mussel juice. We were not overly full which was great. The customer service was great.

Service is remarkably slow, the food is mediocre at best, and even though the ambiance is cute, the confusion that comes with bad service makes it hard to appreciate.

Another great dining experience. I couldn't come to NZ without trying their Lamb. It was superb! My wife had the crayfish and she thoroughly enjoyed it.

Captains Restaurant is a phenomenal spot for local fresh seafood in a fine dining environment. My wife and I recently visited for dinner and ordered the New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussels and the New Zealand Crayfish. Both dishes were delicious! The mussels were massive, briny, juicy, and tender and marinated in a tangy garlic and white wine sauce. Toasted ciabatta bread was served on the side to soak up the flavorful sauce that pooled at the bottom of the dish. The crayfish was perfectly prepared: succulent, tender, and briny meat was brushed with flavorful garlic butter. Overall, I highly recommend Captains Restaurant for its local fresh and delicious seafood.

If it's lamb & beef you're seeking, look no further! This humble restaurant with classic, warm cognac stained wood & Burgundy leather upholstery specializes in just that. Also, this establishment offers seafood as fresh as you can eat. Captain's Restaurant won the award for best Lamb & Beef dishes in New Zealand every year since 2009. If that's not a statement in itself, check it out for a very memorable first hand experience!

Seafood restaurant in Queenstown. Overall, a solid 4 stars. Details by dish below - Crayfish - juicy tender meat - fresh and not chewy at all. A bit pricey - Monkfish (Fish of the day) - ok - have had better monkfish elsewhere - Salmon - well-cooked and served with quinoa which provides texture / sth interesting to the dish - Lamb chop - ok - have had better ones elsewhere - Side dishes - would recommend the beetroot salad - very refreshing and provides a good contrast to the seafood dishes - Decent wine selection

    Seafood chowder

Stopped by for lunch, got their seafood chowder. It was a hearty portion. Service was quick.

Never had New Zealand crayfish before, but if it is always like how Captains prepared it, it won't be the last time.

My fiancé made the smart decision of looking at areas outside of downtown and found this restaurant. It's a little on the outskirts of downtown but not too far (via car). Our reservation was for 9 but we got there almost an hour earlier yet managed to get a table. The owner/manager (?) welcomed us and sat us himself. As for tables for dining, this place is pretty small so it makes sense to make a reservation for dinner during the busy seasons. This is definitely a local place and the service shows that. We ordered the tomato and basil bruschetta to share and a glass of Riesling, we enjoyed both. Like most places in NZ I've been to, they have one vegetarian option in their mains so I went with it: house-made gnocchi with tomato, chili, basil, olive & caper sauce with ricotta and Parmesan cheese. It was absolutely delicious, after having Italian at several places in NZ, this dish felt the most authentic and was hands down the best. I've enjoyed every part of the dish and wanted more. The fiancé ordered the Fiordland wild venison, seared on mushroom risotto and steamed green beans and liked it a lot. The service was pretty good, I've learned to lower my expectations regarding service when outside the US but our waitress was sweet and personable. The owner/manager also checked on us several times throughout the meal. We had a little issue with some items being wrong on the check itself and getting the check (but I assume they simply didn't want to rush us) but all in all, I truly enjoyed this place and it was probably the best meal we had on our trip.

We ordered a Mediterranean pizza and garlic bread. Although it wasn't 100% authentic Italian it was the best pizza we ate while in New Zealand. The restaurant itself is long and narrow, so tables on one side and servers and the kitchen on the other. I ordered bruschetta for my starter & spaghetti bolognese for my main. The bruschetta came out with sliced prosciutto on top which I could have done without. I wished for more tomatoes, onion, and oil. The spaghetti bolognese was flavorful but just ok? Like, I'm not Italian but can make a better version of that at home. Although it's a simple dish, that probably not something you want to hear when you're selling it for $36 NZD. So the overall dining experience was a bit meh. I went to a pizzeria in Te Anau with better flavors. It might be a nice dinner date because the ambiance is lovely, if a bit loud. The service was fine, if a bit on the slow side.

Not much to look at but it was a little quieter and away from the ovens back there. Husband had the fettuccine carbonara and I had a margarita pizza. Both were excellent. We started with a Caprese salad which was also excellent. My pizza had homemade crust with the bubbly burnt edges that happens in a woodfire oven. So good. Service was excellent. Parking on street is less than rare so we parked in a lot for roughly $10USD. Great experience.
