My wife and I had dinner one night, and then next day, a late lunch at Captains Restaurant. Our first night in New Zealand, we were just walking around Queenstown area, and the restaurant was very close to our hotel. Restaurant looked very inviting and the service people seemed very nice. We only wanted quick 'starters' at Captains, my wife had her Seafood Chowder (a bit too salty) and I had NZ Mussels - she diluted her chowder soup with some of the sauce from my Mussels and it tasted very good then. Next day, my niece and her husband flew in from Wellington to see us for about 8 hours before returning. After a cruise, we went to Captains again for a late lunch. My wife and I ordered the same thing as previous night - so good to get FRESH NZ mussels instead of the frozen ones that we normally eat back in the States! Seafood Chowder was still a bit salty for our taste, so once again, it was 'diluted'. My niece and her husband had Fried calamari with fries and salad, and Lamb Ribs. We all shared a little of our food with each other, and all the food was very tasty. Since it wasn't overly busy at that hour, we stayed and chatted a bit, though we did tell the staff that, and they didn't have a problem with that. Last evening in Queenstown so I decided to splurge. Unfortunately was very disappointed. Our server only offered me a 700g Crawfish instead of other smaller sizes. Nevertheless when it arrived, it was overcooked (charred/burnt). He never came back around to check on us so I couldn't send it back. Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on the crawfish. The hint should have been the slow and poor service. I'll not come back nor recommend coming here. read more

My friend & I went there today around 3 & thankfully lunch was served to 4 and happy hour (sadly only $3 off cocktails) started @ 3. Marjie got Jack Daniels; a very small serving and I got one of their signature cocktails that was outstanding. We both had the lamb which was served w nice salad and French fries. Wish I had asked for the fries 'crispy' but everything else was spectacular!! This was a great place with awesome ambience. When we arrived in Queenstown from Sydney, my hubby wanted to make sure we eat lamb, since most of the lamb meats in the US is from New Zealand. So found this highly rated restaurant and ordered a rack of lamb, garlic bread and mussels. The lamb meat was so tender and tasty. The food here is absolutely DISGUSTING, especially the expensive crawfish!! It's so mushy and soft and not fresh at all! (It was literally $100 and SO SO DISGUSTING) The mussels and oysters are also fishy and not fresh! The service is bad too and it takes such a long time to get to the table! The environment is horribly old (broken sofas and chairs) and the bathrooms are not clean. This place is so overpriced and everything is so bad!! My wife and I recently visited for dinner and ordered the New Zealand Green-Lipped Mussels and the New Zealand Crayfish. Both dishes were delicious! The mussels were massive, briny, juicy, and tender and marinated in a tangy garlic and white wine sauce. Toasted ciabatta bread was served on the side to soak up the flavorful sauce that pooled at the bottom of the dish. The crayfish was perfectly prepared: succulent, tender, and briny meat was brushed with flavorful garlic butter. As with Bannockburn Hotel in Otago, I think this was recommended to us...or maybe we just saw it in the encyclopedic restaurant guide that our hosts left for us in the Airbnb, but either way, what a find. Best lamb I had on the trip, without question. Lamb chops, perfectly prepared, delicious flavor, just melt in your mouth tender. The little pour over cup of rosemary jus was great alongside, but honestly...barely needed at all. As with Stations Restaurant in Hokitika, there are a lot of awards for lamb and beef on the walls here, and I think to an even greater extent, they are very well deserved here. I know we had some appetizers as well - maybe some salt and pepper calamari? I know my family can't turn down calamari, but I don't want to say that for sure. the important part was that lamb, which I still remember vividly. It was worth the 5 stars. This is maybe also the most expensive place we ate at while on our trip - and still not stupidly expensive, the rack of lamb I had was only about $28 USD, which for a rack of lamb of this quality? That's really reasonable, I think, especially in a town that could easily charge tourist prices. Service was good too. Worth a visit if you're looking for a nice meal in Queenstown. read more

One word: AMAZING. The rack of lamb was quite possibly the best lamb I had during my two week stay in New Zealand and that's saying a lot because ALL the lamb is good in New Zealand. I was a little disappointed that they didn't have oysters when I went, but it all worked out for the best because the waitress recommended the green lipped mussels - oh my gosh. SOOOOOO good. And I don't even really like mussels! The service was amazing. The wine list was fantastic. The atmosphere was elegant but not pretentious. And the prices were more than reasonable!
