After two quick winery visits, we were looking for a place to eat dinner. We were close to Arrowtown so we checked a few places out and settled on La Rumbla. It's a bit hidden away but walk through the post office precinct and it's around the corner.
We dropped in on an early Friday (around 5:45pm). We didn't make reservations but they had plenty of room at the bar so we sat there. The place never got packed as there was several empty tables during the two hours that we were there.
The inside is modern and hip but with a bit of funkiness to it. There's skeleton decor on the bar (a bit of a Mexican/Latin vibe). Make sure to check out the cool tropical washrooms. Service is friendly but it brutally slow at the bar. Our barman couldn't seem to multitask and it was painful to try and get water refills from him.
The menu is tapas style and it's a one pager (price range is $11.00 to 28.00 NZD). There were a couple specials up on the blackboard by the bar. Drinks were mostly cocktails but there's also wine, beer and cider.
- Complimentary bread - this was a nice touch. Couple pieces that were perfect to whet our appetite. Lightly grilled.
- Tarakihi ceviche ($23.00 NZD) - with watermelon, avocado, ricoto dressing and blue masa tostadas. They're pretty stingy with the tostadas (you only get 4 chips). A bowl would have been nice given the price point. The ceviche was excellent; nice texture to the fish, creamy avocado and the watermelon was a pleasant, refreshing addition. Get it.
- Grilled Fiordland octopus ($24.00 NZD) - pickled fennel, olive tapenade and preserved lemon. Pickled fennel was interesting; reminded me of those white anise candies you get at Greek restaurants. Olive tapenade was solid. Octopus had an amazing texture; it reminded me of crab. Sadly, they over salted it, ruining what would have been a great dish.
- Grilled lamb rump ($28.00 NZD) - charred eggplant puree, summer beans and padron peppers. This was the best dish of the night. Juicy, tender and flavourful lamb. The eggplant purée had a great smokey flavour and the beans were unexpectedly delicious. The peppers seemed out of place but all good.
- Buttermilk pannacotta ($12.00 NZD) - plum compote and grand marnier strawberries. Plum compote was delicious (and hidden underneath) but the pannacotta on its own was pretty plain. We didn't get a hint of grand marnier in the strawberries.
Pricey. I wanted to like it more but taking everything into consideration, it's 3.5 stars. read more
