I work for a contractor and we have been working with Cox for over 30 years. I had to go in to get a paint match for some paint that I had in my old bathroom (burned down house) that isn't for sale any longer. I took the sample card in (I want to smack myself for forgetting his name) and the gentleman took it and matched it perfectly. I was being like a normal client hemming and hawing lol He said that we needed to be careful so we didn't mess up what he already mixed but he did it anyway. I put it on the walls today and I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!!! Thanks so much for your help. AVOID at all costs. I provided a detailed list of the paints I wanted during my visit, I picked up half of my order and returned the next day for the rest--only to find they didn't have it. The staff looked at me with blank stares, and I had to reorder everything. The biggest mistake? They gave me the wrong kitchen cabinet color. Called this paint store and asked the clerk if he could have another 5gal bucket of paint ready for me, as I was in a hurry and didn't want to wait I asked the, so-called, gentleman if I could send him a photo of the old buckets paint code. This paint is $300/bucket with ZERO CHANGE OF RETURN. he curtly informs me he doesn't have access to the office or email. I then polit ask him if he has a phone I can send it to. He then goes off about how he can't do that for safety reasons basically implying I was one of these wackos out to get him And hangs up on me. I wait a few minutes before calling back while thinking to myself why is this guy in customer service? When I called back same person picked up. I asked him why did he hang up? He proceeded telling me a lie that he had just gotten back from lunch and that wasn't him. His accent was strong and distinctive so there was no doubt, plus it 330pm I try to place my order, but when he asked for my phone number I didn't want to give it to him as he was the one off the deep end. I was more than willing to pay with credit card. he hung up again Dear owner of cox paint Santa Monica get rid of this guy ASAP. He shouldn't be in customer service , he's costing you business. The reason Cox Paint Santa Monica gets 5 stars is because of Frank. He is the face of Cox Paint. I used to go to the Culver City store but since they moved Frank, I moved too. Frank not only knows everything about paints (and Cox has a tremendous selection), but he has an artist's eye and an intuitive feeling for what will go well with your color palette. I took a pillow to him and pointed to one of the colors, and he matched it perfectly in paint. It is overwhelming to navigate those big, thick paint chip booklets. How do you know what colors go with what, if you don't like what's on the same chip? Frank will take you through it. He can even figure it out if you tell him verbally what you want, even if you don't have a photo or paint chip. On weekends they can get pretty busy, but it's worth it to wait for Frank. There's a few parking spaces in front in their lot, and meter parking on the street, both on Santa Monica Blvd and the side street. read more

I had a wonderful experience at Cox today. I was looking for some Benjamin Moore paint samples and was immediately taken with how large their Benjamin Moore selection is. After browsing paint chips for about 20 minutes, a very kind employee helped me choose paint brushes for my samples and white boards that would be best to test my samples on. He then mixed my paint for me and kept me laughing the whole time. You would be hard pressed to find this kind of individualized attention at any other paint store. I also love that I am able to support a small family business. Cox was pretty packed for a Tuesday at noon but it's a further testament to how many others love this store. Extra bonus - they have a parking lot! I will be back for years to come. read more

Many paint samples are completely wrong: I got around 15 paint samples from them to test out colors for our house and around 30% were not accurate to the paper samples at all. Big waste of time and money going there because I had to go to another store to get all new samples and boards to paint on which was extremely frustrating and a big waste of time & money. This is the fifth store. I've needed to get samples out in the only one who I had issues with. Very surprising that so many colors were completely wrong including Benjamin Moore colors which didn't make sense. I called to give them a heads up and the guy in charge this morning just denied that they ever have issues even though I had multiple colors that were completely wrong and I got them corrected at the next store I had to go to after to fix all their wrong samples. I recommended they check their machines, but he didn't seem to think , they needed you, so I would just beware of getting samples there because it's likely going to be a waste of time and you'll have to go to another store after anyways. read more

I gave now been at this place 3 times over 6 months. each time I'm telling myself I'm going to write a review as well as that was the last time I'm going there. The workplace culture most be horrible there, no one is friendly, no one smiles but beyond that they're very rude and talk to you in a demeaning way if you're just a homeowner. One time I had order 5 samples. I come home and the guy had given me two identical samples and forgotten the one color sample. They wanted me to pay for correcting their problem. Today I came in to have a color match done. I couldn't tell if it's a semi gloss or high gloss. He asked me which one I wanted. I asked him what he thought. His answer was "I dont care, it's your door, I'll make it whatever you tell me to" I asked again "since you're the expert whats your opinion?" again he he said "I don't care I'll make it whatever you want". They also have small sample paint cans so you don't have to commit to a $110 gallon of paint which is helpful. They are proud suppliers of Farrow and Ball estate paint. Went to COX paint today to purchase dry wall primer and paint for my garage. Needed two gallons of each. It's my first time painting fresh drywall so I proceeded to ask him a few questions. Unfortunately, I had to deal with an EXTREMELY RUDE person who barley wanted to answer my questions. I was there today at 4pm, so hopefully they can figure out who it was. There was an older woman there who was very nice trying to help. But the man who checked me out was rushing me and refused to answer my questions. The store was empty and he stood there very rude like I was annoying and bothering him. I spent $200 on four cans. I promise, I will NEVER go back because of this man who was obnoxious and rude. Ugh! What an awful experience as I'm looking forward to a day of painting. Too bad o had to interact with him. read more

I recently purchased paint at Cox for painting my condo. I had used Cox in the past and had really liked them. However, this time my experience was much more challenging. To backtrack, having my home painted and selecting the right color is stressful. It's expensive, time consuming and incredibly difficult to select the right color! Frankly, the whole process was feeling a bit overwhelming. Fortunately I discovered Carolyn through a good yelp review. She helped me over the course of a few days to maneuver the selection. I was starting to feel better about the whole process until I had to have the paint mixed and pay for the samples, and ultimately my final paint choice. That's when I encountered Bobby. OMG! Bobby is obviously quite knowledgeable about paint, but his manner with customers is strikingly abrupt and caustic. It made dealing with Cox feel incredibly uncomfortable. I am someone who always treats people with kindness and respect, and tries to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. I like to comment on the great work people try to do, and frankly, it is difficult for me to give a bad review. However, having to deal with that kind of attitude and approach makes it difficult to recommend Cox or shop there again, atleast until a change is made. I hope management or ownership can either work with Bobby to help him change the way he interacts with customers or have other employees deal with customers instead. I wish him well- but the current situation is certainly not a positive reflection on your business. read more

Had nothing but good experiences with them. Until now. I learned the hard way that I should have been painfully clear about my experience level re painting. While this vignette is partially my fault, they could have been nicer about the misunderstanding and far less condescending. If you are painting yourself, be very clear with them and ask which can is which as the labels and the contents can deceive, especially with light color paints. I ended up using the wall paint as primer, and now have an unused can of primer that they wouldn't take back. Both cans said primer on them. Needless to say, the placement of the word primer was more distinguishable on the can of wall paint. And don't expect them to be gracious or understanding. I will find my benjamin Moore paints elsewhere going forward. read more

I have bought many things from here since I moved to Santa Monica and never had a problem. One day I came in to buy some flat paint for a metal awning on a flip I am working on and was given shiny oil based black paint by accident. I had someone paint the whole thing and I came back to notice it was the wrong paint. I took it back 2 days later, without any remorse just tried to exchange it for the right paint and I was treated like a dog and embarrassed in front of all the customers. The guy told me that he was a professional and would never give me the wrong paint and that my painter was the unprofessional one for opening it without checking the writing and then told me "I will exchange it but don't ever come back" Horrible horrible feeling and sometimes makes me sad that bigger stores do better and why little stores are soon going to run out of business because of their lack of customer service. Some general contractors are willing to spend hundreds of dollars a month, all we need is some decent customer service. read more
