Fredericksburg Battlefield Visitor Center

I've walked a lot of battlefields, but Fredericksburg has a gravity all its own. Standing at the…read moreSunken Road, you can almost hear the roar of cannon from Marye's Heights and the futile cries of Union soldiers charging across open ground. This wasn't just another clash of armies -- it was one of the most lopsided assaults of the war, a grim December 1862 where bravery collided head-on with impossible odds. The Visitor Center does a fine job grounding you in the context: Burnside's plan to cross the Rappahannock, the delays with pontoon bridges, and how those hours gave Lee's men the time to dig in. The short film is worth it -- it sets the stage for why this battle became a symbol of both heroism and futility. Walking the field, I couldn't help but note how the terrain dictated the slaughter. The Union army had to charge over nearly half a mile of open plain, with no cover, directly into Confederate firepower. The stone wall at the base of Marye's Heights remains chilling in its simplicity -- a farmer's wall turned fortress. It's said that a single Confederate line repulsed wave after wave of bluecoats, and when you stand behind that wall, you understand how. The driving tour expands the picture. Slaughter Pen Farm, preserved by the American Battlefield Trust, gives you the only full Union attack route still intact. It's haunting to trace those footsteps -- knowing thousands never made it across. Other stops, like Lee's Hill, give you the vantage point the Confederate commander had, surveying the field with grim confidence. It's not all glory -- part of Fredericksburg's story is loss and futility. More Union soldiers fell here in a single day than in many entire campaigns. But it's also where Richard Kirkland, the "Angel of Marye's Heights," earned his legend by bringing water to dying Union soldiers, showing compassion amidst carnage. Yes, the modern world has pressed in -- houses and traffic surround pieces of the field -- but enough remains to feel the weight of what happened here. Preservation efforts have fought hard to keep key ground from disappearing, and walking it today is a testament to both the men who fought and those who saved the land. Tip for history buffs: * Start at the Visitor Center, watch the film, then walk the Sunken Road before driving the tour. * Read first-hand accounts (like Sgt. McCarter's memoirs) before going -- they'll bring the ground to life. * Go early in the morning or late afternoon for solitude -- the quiet amplifies the history.

I had the pleasure of being gifted a tour certificate from my co-workers who all know how much of a foodie I am. I finally found a good time to go when the weather was pretty mellow, and it was just perfect to walk around for the tour. I opted for the Churchill food tour, and shockingly had not tried many of the places on the tour, so was in for a treat. I wasn't expecting the history tour along with it, but that was nice to hear about Richmond's history while walking and site seeing. The tour guides are great and excited to be there and giving the tours, which also makes for a great experience. There were about five stops on the tour within two hours and it was a nice balance of walking, eating and taking breaks to learn. Some tours and stops even include alcohol, so that was a nice surprise. I've already bought another gift certificate to check out a different food tour. Highly recommend this experience to all, especially my foodies and history buffs!

The wait staff all are dressed in period attire (given the wait staff were all clean and had newer clothing) and were buzzing around the seating area taking orders and refilling drinks. There's a buffet style line where you go for food and you can go back for seconds or even thirds if you choose. The food was good, not great, but it was a fantastic experience.

Your waiter/waitress will come around and offer refills of whatever you'd like and also bring refills of drinks and/or jams/jellies/butters/hot sauce etc to your table. Service was quick and so so so friendly. The price is $28 for the buffet and I didn't think it was the absolute best meal I've had but I loved the history behind it. I wish we got seated in the main dining area but I guess we'll have to come back another time as well! Charlie, our server, was an absolute gentleman and so attentive to our group! We even got a bowl of ice cream with some scotch John sauce as it was insisted we had to try. Will be back again when in the area :)

It helped that they had been to NOLA before and could make some personal recommendations; one of our favorite recs was the evening historical ghost tour which we might not have thought to try if it weren't for them. They also found us options for culinary tours at our request. :) Our latest request for them was for our honeymoon. We were already so focused and stressed from wedding planning that it was an easy decision to enlist Melissa and Zach's help by giving them our preferences, timeline, and budget for our honeymoon, and they helped price out some great options for us to choose from for multiple countries. We ended up choosing Mexico for the value, and it was just what we wanted and needed after our wedding festivities were over. While they will plan a nice vacation for you both domestically and internationally, I think their international experience with traveling is the most valuable thing about their services. They're adventurous and have tried both the touristy things and things off the beaten track; they won't have an issue with giving you great travel tips and good deals. :)

Melissa incorporated the ideas I had found (there was a luxury tent resort I knew I wanted to stay in) with suggestions of her own and it all worked out wonderfully and in fact exceeded my expectations. The trip was far better than anything I could have planned on my own. We had drivers to take us anywhere we wanted to go, they found us an awesome resort in Mombasa, planned activities for days that we needed them and also allowed for plenty of downtime, and worked within our budget. We never had to worry about anything once we hit the ground in Kenya. Sometimes throughout the planning process I would change my mind about things, and Melissa was always very patient and prompt with getting back to me and tailoring the itinerary exactly to my specifications. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to friends.

Upon arriving 3 mins before…read moretheir 4:15pm start time, we walked into the downstairs of Capital to see the rest of the tour folks taking a drink of the 2nd beer sample. I politely ask the tour guide, "What beers were sampled today?" His response was a look of confusion, and he didn't know the beers that were sampled. Better yet, we were not even offered the samples. Strike 1. Everything seemed a little disorganized and that was made evident when the owner, not giving the tour this past Saturday, asks "Who hasn't purchased tickets yet?" We were immediately looked at and given the look, you're not going on the tour because you walked in last; regardless of the fact that we purchased our tickets over a month beforehand. Evidently, the company could not count the number of people on their own tour list to see that we had 2 people too many. A couple that was there on their anniversary date were asked/told they would not be going and they would be given an extra two tickets. Strike 2. Upon getting on the bus and rolling over to Legends the group we were with was a solid group. We were all joking and having a good time. At Legends everything was a little chaotic and not organized at all (definitely not a shock after our start). It was nothing beyond the standard Legend flight, that was poured and half the time the tour guide pouring didn't know what was in the pitcher (Pale or IPA, he did not know). Really? Also, we were told nothing about the beers that were being poured, were given no tour or description how they brew there, nothing. Strike 3. Next up was Midnight Brewery. We arrive and find out there is some beer festival going on; interesting. We get inside and the guide has no idea what is going on. 5-10 mins later he walks around and hands us all a $5 beer coupon and says, "They are not doing samples due to the event." Ok. So my group and myself proceed up to the pouring area and talk to the bartender. Super nice and points out that most of the small brewery owners were there hanging out. So, the bartender knows more than our guide, awesome! We get introduced to the owner and was ask him to give us a tour. He was very welcoming and then introduced us to Neil Burton, the founder of Strangeways (where we were heading next). A huge thumbs ups for Midnight! Tour company: strike 4. We get to Strangeways and everything was. . . . unorganized/chaotic. Surprised? Me either. They give us a few samples to taste, and were nice. We again, heard nothing about their brewing process, did not see the brewing room, nothing. The beer was tasty, no question. Strike 5. This tour needs a major overhaul for it to be worth it. At $65 a ticket, this was one of the biggest wastes of $130 we had spent on a night out ever. I'm not one to bash a company, but for the 3 places we went (I'm not counting Capital since we didn't get any samples there) we could have gone and asked for a tour, had a few samples and spent half what we did.
