Second time we've stopped there on our drive from the NE down to Bradenton. Right near the top of 301 after heading West on 10, about an hour and a bit from Ocala. Just solid BBQ, reasonably priced, nice staff, what you'd expect from an "off the beaten path" place. Everything we've had has been delicious and plentiful. Be aware that when you order a soft drink or iced tea, they come in huge cups and you WILL have to stop before too long. We are northeasterners and "foodies" with an appreciation of good BBQ, and we heartily recommend Cousin Willie's! read more

While driving to Jacksonville Florida, we stopped for gas and a bite to eat. The gas was easy to get but we wanted something better than junk or fast food. We jumped on Yelp and found that Cousin's was just 3 minutes away promising home style BBQ. Once there we grab a seat and waited for service while drooling from the aroma of smoked meat in the air. I ordered the beef plate with coleslaw and collard greens. The meat was juicy, tender and had the most delicious bark on it. The slaw was refreshing and helped cut the fat of the brisket. From the time I stepped out of my truck, past the woodpile and smoker out back and through the front doors, it was clear that this place does not lack for character. A saddled up pig statue out by the street seemed like a good sign. I wasn't bringing a huge appetite, so I chose to get the lunch portion of ribs which was priced at a very reasonable $9.50 for the meat and two sides. At least that's what I thought I ordered, but it turned out they gave me the dinner portion instead. Both waitresses were super nice and I am sure they would have only charged me for the lunch if I mentioned it, but the pile of 6 ribs they brought looked good enough that I decided I was up for the challenge. They were cooked to the perfect temperature, still hot and tender enough to come clean off the bone with a gentle tug. They had a decent bark and a hint of smokiness. Ribs can be a little tricky because you don't want to overwhelm them with too much smoke, but I would have preferred a little more. They were still some great ribs- I just don't think they will rank among the memorable ones for me. Nonetheless, I finished most of them, and most of the mustard-heavy potato salad and collard greens cooked with added meat. The collards were done especially well. The plate also included 2 thick slices of toast dripping in garlic butter, of which one was enough for me. With that pile of food and the jumbo sized sweet tea that they kept offering to refill for me, I left stuffed and satisfied. I'd love to return and try more of the menu. read more

This is a small local barbecue restaurant with some really good food. The seating area inside is close together, kind of a family style dining. The staff is very friendly, good southern hospitality! I tried the brisket, potato salad, and baked beans. They brisket was cooked really well, nice and juicy, I just would have preferred more flavor/seasoning. The sides were pretty good! The owners bought the place 2 years ago and refurbished it, adding personal touches like The sign outside. Its a picture of her grandfather on a steer. The inside is clean and simple, with welcoming staff to meet you. The BBQ platter consist of some of the best flavors you can put in your mouth. OMG what a hidden gem. My friend and I had to go after reading the reviews to check this place out ourselves. The fried corn nuggets were amazing, sweet and fresh. Definitely get it. My friend had a special dish - Pulled pork nachos. He finished the whole dish. He said it was flavorful and filling. I had the beef brisket sandwich with fries. The fries were well seasoned and fresh. The brisket was definitely moist. The sweet BBQ sauce was really good. I can't say the brisket was the best I have had - I am from Texas, it was really good. The menus were old, crinkly and sticky. There was ample seating for small and large parties. The bathrooms were in the back past the kitchen which could have been cleaner. Not sure why large bins of brown sugar were being stored in the hallway by the restrooms. Food/Drink 2/5 The fried pickles were the best thing we ordered. I got a combo plate with brisket and ribs. The Brisket was dry and overdone. The rib was ok but I was turned off already didn't want to finish it. Three BBQ sauces a mustard that was too mustardy. Another sauce I think was supposed to be a Carolina sauce was way to runny. The third was OK. The fried corn nuggets were good. Hell anything fried is good. On first appearance, the exterior was beaten up; picnic tables broken and in the sun, "Pig with saddle" at the front entrance, faded and peeling, tables inside had crumbs on it so not cleaned well. The bar-b-q bottles were tacky to touch and looked nasty. Now the positives. The waitress was very nice. She recognized that we were not from around there. We ordered. My brother and sister in law got wings and shared. I got a brisket sandwich and my hubby, pulled pork plate. The wings were finished, I had a huge sandwich and boxed half as did my hubby. We were very excited to find a BBQ joint just 1.5 miles from our hotel. Ordered pulled pork and brisket meals. The meat was well prepared and tasty. Seemed to have a fair amount more fat than I'm accustomed to but the meat was good. The smoked Mac and cheese was less than appealing, the beans were cold but flavourful. The Brunswick stew (Hopefully have that right) was very tasty but cold. Never had this before so not sure if cold is the proper serving technique. This place has smoked barbecue on lock!! Absolutely amazing. Succulent beef brisket that is just crispy end on outside and moist and juicy inside. I was impressed with the size of the portions and homemade taste. This spot is easy to find located right off 10 and plenty of parking. My photos don't do the ribs justice!! If you like a little kick in your sauce, ask for the hot barbecue sauce. All the sauces are made in house, so try them all!. I'd give this a 5 star if the service wasn't lacking. Young lady was overwhelmed working the front by herself during peak hours. My boyfriend's food was deliver and half way ate his dinner and the table after us was getting served their food before I was asked what I ordered. I repeated my order and I watched her tell the kitchen staff what it was. No one said anything as to why my food wasn't delivered at the same time as my boyfriends was. I kinda figured that they lost my order but it would have been nice for someone to at least acknowledge the mistake and apologize for my extra wait time. But not one word to me as to what happened to my food order. The turkey was just as delicious as it always is but if you like a creamy Mac n cheese this is not the place for it. The green beans seemed a bit bland as well. Everything else we ordered was very good. A Real Gem! On our way to Tarpon Springs, we found this REAL GEM of a BBQ restaurant in the small town of Baldwin, FL, on business 301. We tried the pork barbecue sandwich, another sandwich of three chopped meats (chicken, beef, and pork --huge!), beef brisket, and pork ribs--with homemade, delicious cole slaw, and home cooked collard greens. "OUTSTANDING", we kept saying with each bite. "Powell", the owner and chief cook, could not have been nicer or more accommodating either. Prices are very reasonable. Cousin Willis's is obviously and deservedly the favorite local hangout, as people kept coming in and ordering take outs on this busy Saturday. Many more "sides" were available ranging from fried okra and sweet potato fries to a gambit of others, all looking fantastic as they were served to tables nearby. A variety of homemade bbq sauces are available for an extra kick, if need be, which of course we tried. We left with leftovers and additional "fixins" for a later meal--promising to make this review and definitely come back if ever we are in the area. A must stop, for sure!! read more

Was staying the night in Baldwin and found this place. Loved the idea of some nice barbecue and I was NOT dissapponted! I got the Sloppy Pig (might have been Sloppy Pork I cant remember the exact name) and Collard Greens as a side. The sandwiches have Garlic Bread buns and it was amazing. I took a bite out of my sandwich and immediatly knew it would not need any added sauces, that it was already perfect as is. I 100% reccomend coming by here if you are passing through Baldwin or live there and if I ever come through there again I know exactly where i'm going for lunch or dinner. read more
