The food is pretty good here. The wings are probably the best thing on the menu. Smoked, then flash fried and sauced the way you like. They also have a really good salad and you can get your choice of 2 or 3 meats. Most people would not be able to eat all of it. I feel like the prices are really high for what you get but they do have some unique items on the menu. I have been going here for years and have seen the prices rise continuously. The servers often tell you not to tip when you order. They say the owner keeps the tips, it is no wonder they cannot keep help. Stopped in today for an early lunch with a friend at his recommendation. Upon our arrival, the place was deserted and stayed that way throughout the time we were there. So much so, the staff were seated at tables in the dining room on their phones. This counter service restaurant is located in a small strip mall at the intersection of Dunn Ave and Biscayne Boulevard in Jacksonville's northside. Despite being bored, the staff were friendly, attentive and courteous. You order at the counter and the a member of the staff brings it to you. I ordered a lunch turkey platter with collared greens, green beans and I added a side of Brunswick stew. My friend ordered the pulled pork platter with corn nuggets and baked beans. Both plates also come with Texas toast. While my turkey was well smoked and the house sweet barbecue sauce was good (the portion was a good amount also). However, the sides were not great - the Brunswick stew was flavorful but the green beans and collared greens were flavorless. My friend did not complain about his meal but I will say his baked beans looked straight out of a can. They argued that I was missing items, then said I didn't order, so I said I would take a picture of my order and send it to them. They said well you can come pick it up if you want it. Literally the worst customer service I have received in Jacksonville. You mess up my order then tell me to fix the problem. On top of that the food isn't even good, no flavor and over cooked brisket. I have been to big oak bbq a few times. I have gotten the individual meals and have also gotten the family meals to go. The service is okay. When I get an order to go, there is a lady at the service counter who wants a tip and watches closely to see if your going to tip her. It feels very uncomfortable. I normally don't tip on a to go order unless the service was somehow exceptional. The meat is good. I have had the turkey which is moist. I have also had the pork which is more like a chopped pork but good. It is fairly flavorful. The brisket is good and well cut. They give both the tender and lean pieces. The sides are okay. The Mac and cheese feels very overcooked. The BBQ beans have a good flavor and have bits of meat in them. The toast is fine. It is standard. I have also had the fried pickles which are fresh and a good size portion. Overall the food is fine and it is convenient if your on the north side of town. The device in side isn't much and you need to get your own silverware which is fine. read more

There is always something missing, overcooked and/or cold with my food! Since the "new" owners took over, there is always something negative about my visit! It would be that one of my sides or brownie missing! The meat doesn't have the Smokey flavor it used to have or the ribs would be dry! Their portions are NOT worth the price or the visit anymore! The flavor just isn't there! One more thing, ITS THE LOVE for me when preparing my food...THEIR customer service is horrible as well! We yelped up this place before heading to Jacksonville International for our long flight(s) back to the PNW. We tried two Big Oak salads, one with chicken the other with sausage and pork, two sides of greens ( I wouldnt have gotten the same thing as my dad had I know he already ordered that...) and a two meat plate with beef ribs and brisket, pot salad and beans. The flavor of everything was good, not terrible, not amazing. The pork was really fatty, but we didn't have time to ask for a re-do as we had a flight to catch. Prices are reasonable, super friendly service, the joint was pretty busy for a Monday at 4:45, and the brownies looked to die for. If I lived in the area I would probably come here/ take out often. Stopped in really quickly to get my bbq egg roll fix, aka stumps. The young lady who took my order was great. The stumps, were not. They used to be so good!!! They seem more soggy and not as tasty as they used to be. I don't know if I'll purchase them again. I paid around $7 for 2 of them. Oh my goodness yes! I came here earlier today for lunch with clients and I had one of the best BBQ meals I've ever had! First off, the small when you walk in is like heaven. It gears you up for what's to come. And what's to come? DELICIOUSNESS! I had the pulled pork sandwich special which is so simple and so perfect in every way. Beautifully smoked, chopped up nuggets of porky goodness served on a couple of slices of toasted white bread. Add a little of the sauce of your choice and you are in for a treat! The fries were perfect too. Crinkle cut fries are the undisputed king of fries along with shoestrings for me. These were crisp and still fluffy inside just like they are supposed to be. I ordered the whole chicken special and I was highly disappointed. I asked over the phone did they boil their chicken and she responded the meat is smoked and not boiled. A giant menu board behind the counter to choose your food. I will say the prices are pretty good for a BBQ place. $6.99 for a pork sandwich with one side and came with a drink. You can add sides and the also have appetizers. The corn nuggets were very good. The pork on the sandwich was just OK and the French fries were undercooked. The beef was good. Other sides are bbq beans and Mac n cheese etc. The BBQ sauces were disappointing to me and only had four to choose from. The hot ketchup was pretty good. All in all I give it three stars. Down home type of place. You order and pay upfront and the food is brought to you. I had the grilled chicken, salad and another side. My son had the pulled pork sandwich. Chicken was moist and tasty. He seemed to enjoy his pulled pork. We had desert which was carrot cake and red velvet. Go with the carrot cake. Red velvet didn't do much for me but ad unnecessary calories. The carrot cake was worth it. I had leftovers to bring home. There are tv's to watch if desired too. read more

This is my go-to spot for quality food at a reasonable price. The ribs and chicken are consistently tender and flavorful but it's the bbq salad that stole my heart. It's your standard chef salad with turkey or chicken (or both!) on top; add a little dressing and a little sweet bbq sauce for a delicious surprise. I'm also impressed by the variety of the menu which includes seafood dinners, hamburgers, fried squash and fried okra. I've tried nearly everything they serve and have yet to be disappointed. My family, for reasons they are incapable of articulating, does not like this place as much as I do, hence the 4 stars instead of 5 because maybe I'm trippin. Oh wait I lied, there was one thing I was disappointed in: the Mac N Cheese. But honestly, who's out here making mac n cheese like me and my grandma anyway? Exactly. Don't forget a dessert or three. I was given a sample of the brisket and ribs, and it is the best looking BBQ that I've seen since Franklin's BBQ in Austin, TX. They had the perfect red BBQ frame. The flavor was, also, great: light on salt and smoke, which allows the beef and pork flavors to shine. Their ribs are the Star of the show: very flavorful and cooked perfectly! The BBQ samples were so delicious, I ordered the pork sandwich, which was fantastic. Tender and moist with crispy ends.. my sides were, also, great. Loved the Cole slaw (crispy cabbage, touch of vinegar), and promptly, threw some on the sandwich. Also, got a side of homemade Mac-n-cheese: creamy, cheesy goodness!
