Not a big fan of this place, its down in a lower level almost a basement level, upon entering I was hit with a funny smell that persisted throughout my whole experience there. I was not impressed with our service, I saw the waitress 2 times once to take my order and the other to give me bill. I ordered the Pulled pork sandwich and fries, the whole meal tasted no better than something I could get at my local Hyvee and take home and make myself...in fact I'm pretty sure that was the case with the pulled pork. The only reason I'm not giving this a 1 star is my wife's BBQ brisket sandwich didn't taste half bad, although I only had a little bite. Try this place if you must but it will be a long time before I go back if ever. read more

My siblings found this place while they were in town and insisted we go for the fried pickle chips. I wasn't too sure about it. They were amazing. Crisp dill chips, lightly breaded and lightly fried with a ranch dip. Oh my word! So so yummy. My brother said the smoked club was perfectly balanced in each bite and delicious. Sister had the pork tenderloin and was not disappointed. Huge tenderloin and very tasty. She also loved the sweet potato fries. I had the chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes and green beans. Yum dilly! I was full halfway through but had to stop myself from cleaning the plate. I'm not a big fan of bread pudding but we decided to share a piece with ice cream. I thought this would be a good time to not overeat. But no. It was fantastic. Almost like a monkey bread with a warm bread pudding sauce with ice cream on the side. Sadly I ate my full 1/3. So yummy! The drinks were very tasty but the best by far was the root beer float. Rumchata with root beer. We could drink that all night. Please try this hidden gem. You won't regret it. read more

Great find in independence square. Had the Oregon Trail burger with sweet potato fries, excellent choice. Burger was perfect with bbq and coleslaw topped with fried pickles. Fries were crinkle cut, crispy and flavorful. Bread pudding with Carmel sauce was the piece de resistance. Highly recommend this place. read more

Its hard to review this place accurately... Every time they get new servers the place goes to hell.. Most recently a group and I went in for dinner.. We were not waited on for twenty mins and made eye contact with countless workers. The food is pretty good but the service can be made to be better... They need to tell anyone who is off and waiting on a ride that they need to leave and not sit yelling behind my booth rolling silverwear.. I dont care what becky did to tommy I want to eat my meal in peace. Oh and they cant stay consistant on soup days.. I go in for the soup of the day almost once a week and somedays they just decided to make something different??? Awesome dive-restaurant in downtown Independence, MO! Came here this evening for my Grandfathers birthday with a party of ten. Our waitress was friendly and kept all of our drinks filled. Everyone said their food was delicious and had no complaints there. (pork tenderloin and sandwich, pot roast, turkey club, chicken fried chicken). Also, the bread pudding is one of a kind! My family, 1 child and 4 adults, decided to give them a try. Saturday @ 6pm, prior to Mother's Day, got right in. Although some have said the interior seemed a little strange, I like the uniqueness. My husband got a beer and I ordered the probation punch - very good! I ordered the Fried Chicken to be shared with my son...we both loved it! 4pcs of very tasty fried chicken, mashed potatoes with gravy (yum) and perfectly prepared green beans! My wife and I were excited about the opportunity for a date night last Friday night October 28th, 2016 so we headed over to Courthouse Exchange. We arrived at approximately 8:10 pm and were seated right away as there seemed to be ample seating at the time. As soon as we were seated a party of 4 were seated right across the aisle from us and their waitress showed up shortly thereafter. After about 20 minutes we looked around and saw that the table of 4 were getting their meals and we still had not been waited on for drinks! I noticed the hostess walking through and mentioned that we did not even have any waters yet but they already had their food. She told a waitress who came over and took our order for just one (1) piece of chocolate cake since we had already eaten dinner at home. We finally left at 8:50 without ever getting that piece of cake! Forty minutes wasted! There was another table that had arrived before us that were complaining about being hungry and wondering when their order was going to arrive. Not sure we will ever go back. read more

A new favorite place to go. Portions are huge, prices are good. I take my kids here because you get a lot of food pretty cheap and they can put some food down. They make you pay 5-6 dollars for an abnormally weak mixed drink or beer that's in the smallest cup ever. Not even a full size beer. SUPER CHEAP INGREDIENTS. HIGH PRICES. I get that's how restaurants make money, but you can at least make cheap things worthy of a high price. I will say that the onion strings are pretty good though and the burger would have been too if it were seasoned. But with the fact the waitress kept forgetting things and I never got my supposedly 'amazing' applesauce I ordered to try...not too happy. Classic old school eats in a classic Independence setting. I can bring my family and everyone is pleased.

I was pretty skeptical when my friend brought me here the other night, mostly because it's in a basement. The room at the bottom of the stairs had a bar area and a few tables and it didn't seem very busy at all, but there was another room off to the side with dozens of tables, and there were already lots of customers seated. There's even a private room in the back for large parties. The place was huge. We ordered the fish and chips to share, and although our drinks were refilled quickly, we waited quite a while for our food to come out, and the breading was already soggy by the time it reached us, like it had been sitting for a while. But they made up for it when we ordered their alcoholic caramel hot chocolate for dessert. Delicious -- I wish I could have ordered five or six more! Since we split everything, the meal came to only $20 after tip, and while I wasn't very happy with my soggy fish, I definitely plan on returning. read more

This was our first visit after hearing friends talk about this restaurant. Upon entering we were not greeted but instead the bartender looks our direction and says "4?". The bartender got the attention of one of the servers to have us seated. Cool atmosphere...felt kind of like an old fashioned speak-easy... We sat for approximately 20 minutes without attention from anyone- no drinks or anything. We were just getting ready to leave when our waitress came to the table. She took our drink order, delivered it and disappeared for another 10 minutes before taking our food order. We received our food in just under 20 minutes. We felt the food was good and menu items well priced. The "service" experience was not great or even good. We will try the Courthouse Exchange again but if the service is the same we will opt for other choices. We are definitely NOT restaurant snobs that expect wait staff to fall all over themselves to attend to our every need. There are too many good restaurants with good/great service and atmosphere to dine. read more

One of our favorite haunts in Independence. Dating back to before the turn of the century, it is located in the lowest level of a very old building on the historic Independence Square, across the street from the old Courthouse where Harry S. Truman was the county judge before becoming our 33rd US President. They serve your typical bar/comfort food items-sandwiches, fries, tacos, meatloaf, fried chicken, and serves a variety of alcoholic beverages. They also offer a buffet and in the summer, they open the side terrace and have live performances of local bands. They have homemade desserts that are scrumptious. My favorite dishes are the Chicken Fried Chicken, Tenderloin, Reuben, or Meatloaf. My husband really enjoys the Bailiff's Chicken, and Liver and Onions, as well as the Reuben. On Fridays, they have Spiced Boiled Shrimp, which being from the South, he absolutely loves and says they cook the shrimp perfectly every time. We love old world charm and the mom-and-pop style places, of which Independence was founded on, and still values to this day. CE is just as much as part of Independence as the Courthouse across the street. We always take family there, if they are visiting Independence for the first time. read more

Food was good but service was lacking. For starters, I had called earlier in the week to see about reservations for Friday. I was told that they didn't take reservations but to call ahead on Friday, which I was fine with. Friday comes and I call ahead as was instructed and the man on the phone said that they didn't take reservations with a snarky attitude. I informed him that I was told to call ahead. He asked how many people were in our party. I told him 6. He said,"well, we're so busy now I have no idea when we'll have a table for 6." Once again, with a snarky attitude. We show up, although we should have said forget it, and we did get seated. Our waitress was terrible. First off, it took FOREVER for her to even acknowledge we were there. By the time she showed up I was dying of thirst. Then, she doesn't ask if she can take our order, she says, "what do you want?" VERY unprofessional. We get water in very small glasses which I sucked down immediately because I was so thirsty, then she never comes back to check to see if we needed more. We finally get our food and one of the meals didn't have the mac n cheese with it. No biggie, it happens. We ask for it and the waitress brings back applesauce. LOL I had to keep reminding her i needed more water, she forgot to get a guys beer that he ordered.....just wasn't good service at all. I will give it another try however because I liked the atmosphere and the food was good. But if the service doesn't improve, I will not give them a third chance. read more
