It's a butcher store, deli, cheese shop, charcuterie, and cafe all in one place with some gourmet items, local coffee, frozen trays of food if you're catering a party, and baked goods from somewhere else thrown in to take home for good measure. And they have pizza and BBQ on the weekends to take home. Think of it as a mini DiBruno's or Carlino's and you get the idea. Being lazy and hungry we decided to try the newly renovated cafe for a take out lunch last Saturday. My wife enjoyed a gourmet grilled cheese sandwich with apples that was pretty good. I decided to try the signature grilled rib eye steak sandwich. It's not like a steak sandwich but a big, sliced steak in a sandwich. I ordered it rare (of course) and it's served on a steak roll with lettuce, tomato, and basil mayo and a side of French fries. It was delicious and cooked perfectly and I would get it every time. At $19 it's not cheap (and it's messy to eat with stuff dripping and slipping everywhere) but it's like having an actual steak and a sandwich all in one. I would gladly eat this every time I go there. You can eat inside the cafe or they have a couple of (rusty) tables outside where you can nibble (and in my case dribble). We also took home a mini frozen Shepards pie (just ok) and some big type of big beans (pretty good) from the charcuterie. My husband and I went there for the first time. He ordered the rib eye sandwich, rare. It was so excellent and messy! I think I would order it every time we were there. It came with a lot of very good fries. I ordered a grilled cheese sandwich, but I am picky about the cheese. I would have a stronger cheese, but it is my personal cheese preference. I contemplated getting fries, but I am glad I did not because they were a large size. I was in the mood for potato chips, and there were a couple of different types of them. I am glad I got the Herr's kettle chips because they are the best. Also, there were larger bags of snacks- they had Uncle Jerry pretzels, which are so good. Therefore, I think they choose the best pretzels/snacks foods for their customers to select from. While I was waiting for lunch to be prepared, I looked at their prepared and frozen meals. I bought a shepherd's pie, which I had the day after. It was fair- it could have been seasoned a lot better. I would not purchase it again. I bought some big tan beans in olive oil (?) in their refrigerated section. They were delicious, and I would buy them again. This store was clean and very well staffed by friendly employees. We ate outside on the somewhat rusty tables. We are looking forward to returning again here! read more

Purchased a pint of chicken Chili and Italian wedding soup. Chili tasted like cooked Barbecue chicken The Italian soup tasted sour and the greens were not escarole or chopped spinach. It tasted like Miso soup. You could get better out of a can. read more

I really like this place. The café is great for a quick bite, coffee, cookie, pastry, etc. We often find ourselves here when we need a great piece of meat for a big occasion. We also love to try the variety of sausage offered here. The deli meats are awesome and they have stuff that you won't find everywhere. This review is for their pizza. The shop itself and the meats are amazing. I want to be able to give them five stars , but they have to step it up a bit. Love that the crust is thin - could be a bit crispier. This was our third pizza from there and they are extremely skimpy with the toppings. I got the rib eye sandwich. $17. Of course I am thinking sliced ribeye. I was wrong. I would have preferred this rib-eye on a plate. It was a good roll but not a $17 sandwich roll. The roll was also too narrow. Everything kept sliding off the roll. Cutting the Tomato slice in half would have been a big help. The basil mayonnaise was very tasty. As a ribeye it was delicious. As a sandwich it was a miss. It came with french fries but even they were undercooked. I got a brownie. The brownie was delicious. The brownie was big. The brownie gave me a stomach ache because I ate it all at once and should have been two or three servings. Ironically the brownie helped me dollar cost average down the price of the meal. read more

I was asked to pick up a lb. of ground beef for my brother. The person helping me was not wearing his mask correctly, or gloves for that matter. He rubbed his head and face before he adjusted his mask and the got me my order using his hands. Needless to say I was glad it wasn't for me. I did report what I saw to my brother. read more

We have lived near this business for 20 years. They aren't open evenings and only Saturday on the weekends so hard for me to get there. Thanks to Facebook we found them again! They have wonderful prepared food, great cheese selection, baked goods to die for and quality meats. Not cheap but very friendly and quality food. At the butcher counter you will see no gloves worn and will be lucky if you see a mask properly worn. I understand that some customers shop here without wearing masks as well. I asked for a Chorizo sausage at the butcher counter and the man helping me scratched his face and hair, then picked up my sausage with no gloves. mask on his chin, and bragged about how he had just made it this Chorizo. I decided then and there that I would not return. There are people who work there who are conscientious about mask wearing and I feel sorry for them because their coworkers ruin the experience for customers. After four positive experiences at the CB I returned to buy 1 1:2 pounds of Sliced pork for sandwiches for that evening after becoming unexpected hosts ... the butcher was very rude stating to us " next time phone the day before so we can make sure we have plenty of pork left for other shoppers"... although there appeared to be plenty of pork left after our purchase...we were stunned at his rudeness and if we didn't need it then we would have left without purchasing ...we purchased sides and desserts too that were delicious...I'll return again as the other employees were very friendly and helpful but if I encounter him again I will remark on his rudeness....otherwise everything else is great. read more

This place was pretty packed and awkwardly laid out. Full disclosure though - it was Memorial Day weekend. It was a little tough to get someone's attention at the sandwich counter as there was no semblance of a line. We were one of 3 parties waiting to be served and there was more confusion than there would have been. The guy taking my order seemed new which is fine but he was obviously confused as to what goes into a "club" sandwich even though he recommended it. That being said; I got the ham and brie sandwich, my boyfriend got a club and we split a wedge salad. The ham and brie was perfect. The bread, the ham, the melty brie - YUM. The wedge salad wasn't "wedge" it was just a bacon blue salad which is fine. The bacon was fresh and hot which was awesome. The club sandwich was pretty good but nothing special. The small store area, cheese and the bakery/coffee sections had good selections making this a serviceable specialty market in addition to a deli. I can see why they were so busy on a holiday weekend. Searched for an authentic butcher shop and this place didn't disappoint! I was able to meet one of the owners in Ms. Dorothy. She was so sweet and even gave me a free cookie as her appreciation of being a 1st time customer. Everyone was very helpful esp. the gentleman in the cheese section and Lance that was in deli. They have great steaks, but unfortunately I'm done with them after rudeness from one of the butchers. I frequented this establishment during the entire pandemic, and he was always the one with the "chin mask". Well, I still was masking in June, and he decided to yell at me about it. I like everyone else that works there - usually consistently friendly, but if I am going to spend that kind of money on steak, I'll do it somewhere that can be polite. The main reason I shop at Country Butcher is for their homemade sausages. Everyone is flavorful but I tried a new sausage recently and it topped all the others. It was an Italian liver sausage that had a hint of orange. I found it in the freezer section and guess that it is not as popular as the others so it is relegated to the freezer. The butcher who makes it says it is one of his favorites. Now it's one of mine. The cheese selection is pretty good but the prices are a bit outrageous. But, I still manage to pick up one or two cheeses on most visits. read more

Three areas here to review. I bought some burger mix (burger and brisket according to the counter staff) and it was very good. I had some iced coffee from the coffee area - the coffee was ok about Starbucks quality not as good as Talula's and the staff was busy with many tasks - they were very nice when i did catch their attention, and the cafe was a nice environment. The deli featured one of the best sandwiches i have ever had - the Caprese with tomato, mozzarella and basil on lovely bread with a drizzle of olive oil. Only because I live a lot closer to better product in Philly and the place didn't deliver on the expectation their website set-up am I giving this 2 stars...if I was living out this far, I'd be grateful for the place. The shop is divided into three areas, a little cafe, a deli and a straight up butcher. To be fair, we dropped by half-an-hour before they were closing, but it was hard to figure out how much unique product they had available. We dropped in between wineries to pick up a bite; the Italian sandwich my wife and I split was decent, but served on foccacia (OK?) which was a little too damp/doughy to be enjoyable. The cheese selection was very good, we scored a round of Epoisse for $3 less than Di Bruno Bro. and it was well-kept. The butcher part bummed me out because everything was already put away by the time we got there and the staff scurried into the back room when we entered that side of the shop, to avoid us maybe? Still, they had a wide assortment of frozen meats...squab, tongue, full rabbit...the kind of stuff that gives you an excuse to crack open your copy of the River Cottage Meat Book. Prices were high though, so you could probably do better in the Italian Market. There was even a little cardboard marker advertising sweetbreads...I dug into the freezer for a solid 2 minutes looking for them, but they were not to be found. read more

Boy & I were out here on Valentine's Day on a gourmet food scavenger hunt. Sadly, my idea of the perfect V'Day was hunting around the far reaching areas of the suburbs looking for items to form an amazing home cooked dinner with the boy, just me and him, dogs away somewhere, and some good wine. So, I was definitely in a good mood when I got here. The produce and fish sections leave a lot to be desired, but everything else was truly lovely. Sort of a suburban DiBrunio's with an incredible selection of prime meats, huge cheese counter (not quite DiBrunio's, but seriously, who is?), tons of gourmet food items, a bakery with a small but beautiful selection, and (the creme de la creme) a PA wine store inside. Can't help but mention that they were having a HUGE tasting party going on while we were there, so I generally munched my way around the store. I dunno, there's just something about a place that gives me free lamb meatballs and free escargot and free cheese (hmmmmm cheese). O! And I bought escargot! That's right, I'm really cooking now. All in all, I won't make the drive without other enticements, but I left with 2 lbs of Delmonico steaks that cooked up perfectly, and some cheeses that were very reasonably priced and very interesting. read more

How did tiny little Kennett Square attract so many great shops?! This treasure trove was no exception. Upon entering, you're hit with a wave of scents: prepared salads, cheeses, fresh bread, but mostly the heavy smell of meat in endless varieties, from beautiful prime rib to thick pepper bacon and veal sweetbreads. Everything is impeccably fresh and artfully presented, including a handful of produce options (peppers, onions, etc.) Along the walls are gorgeously-wrapped packages, cans and bags of high-quality groceries, from porcini pasta and caperberries to escargot and fine wines. The sheer variety of offerings is overwhelming for such a (relatively) small place. There's a little cafe area for enjoying sandwiches and other quick lunch fare. We were wishing we hadn't eaten lunch somewhere else, and are already planning a trip back to stock our Easter baskets with cured sausages and gourmet cheese! read more

It started with their great bakery where they can make gorgeous custom cakes - like the ones they made for my daughter's graduation and her birthday - then I found out about their breakfast menu which includes awesome crepes and pumpkin flavored pancakes - now I have learned they have the best strong coffee in town - so for a local like me who needs caffeine in the morning - I know exactly where to go! My mom and I stopped in for a dessert and coffee at the bakery cafe section. Nearly $16 for two cupcakes and two coffees. The coffees were cold, and the cupcakes were inedible. They were extremely dry and hard and the icing was hard as well. They're definitely not from scratch and tasted like that weird grocery store preservative used in industrial, mass produced baked goods. I threw everything right in the trash after one bite. The "triple chocolate" cookie was also horrible. It was gray/tan in color and had no flavor. It tasted like it had been previously frozen and defrosted, and was dry and stale. It also went in the trash. When I informed the girl at the counter that I'd thrown everything away because it was so bad, she shrugged and said "Oh. Sorry. That'll be $15.83." I paid and left, never to return. It was just really gross. Probably the worst baked good I've ever tried. read more

I always heard that Country Butcher in Kennett Square is excellent, so I decided to order my son's birthday cake from them. Everything was fine until I received a call from the bakery manager this morning saying that she wanted to review my order because the employee that I spoke with and gave me a price was no longer there. The lady was very unpleasant to speak with and simply told me that the price of the cake was going to be double. She also told me that she was sorry if the price was out of my price range. All this happening 3 days before my son's birthday party. It's not a matter of price, but it's a matter of customer service, she should honor the price and deal with her internal mismanagement situation. This review is for the employees of the cafe. Never in my life have I experienced such utter rudeness and disdain for customers. My first encounter as a new customer was being denied a simple substitution of one pancake with French toast instead of two French toast. A simple squirt of pancake batter denied, for what reason? I had never been there and wanted to try both. I was annoyed and baffled, but ok. I get it. If you do it for me here in the metropolis of Kennett, you'll have to do it for everyone. Then a group of 6 mature, well dressed, well behaved, mannered high school students ordered their breakfasts. The meals were coming out a couple at a time and one of the boy's orders was incorrect. He ordered sunny side, not whatever was given to him. The loud, rude, obnoxious woman that took their order not only INSISTED, over and over, that this was what he ordered, she went to the back to retrieve what she wrote. Presented with THAT, surely they would understand that SHE never makes mistakes. " this is what I wrote down! This is what you said " Over and over and over again. These polite teenagers looked embarrassed and in disbelief at her behavior, which was appalling. My husband and I will never return. I've never seen anything like it. Usually I rave about this place but they really let me down this time! I ordered 24 lamb chops for Christmas and told them I would pick it up Tuesday the 23rd. Of course no one mentioned they would be closing early (2 days before Christmas??!!) I get here at 4:15 and they have been closed for 15 minutes. Lots of workers and everyone ignoring my knocks. Finally someone came and tried to tell me its posted on their website. It's not. And I'm watching LOTS of people pulling into their parking lot who are VERY upset.
