Came in and bought an assortment of meat. From seafood to beef, they have anything you want. Everything I bought was frozen which for me means better quality and less/no preservatives. I asked the owner and they put no hormones, antibiotics, etc. in their animals. They also have an assortment of ready meals and take home to cook/bake meals. For example; I got a meatloaf that I have to bake and it also has instructions which is extra cool to have. The owner, Christine I believe, walked with me to help me pick everything based on what I wanted and even helped me get exactly what I needed for a beef stew. From the veggies, meat, and base. Everyone in there was welcoming and polite. Her "mom" vibes is exactly what you need while finding what you need to prepare a home-cooked meal The meat was fair priced but you are paying for higher quality meat that has been raised right so it's worth it to me. read more

All the meat is fresh processed... no preservatives are added to their grind products so unless you are there when they grind it, it will be frozen... Sausage has an unbelievable fresh taste, perfect seasoning. If you are looking for quality of meats this is the local place to go. read more

I ordered a deli platter for a presentation I was doing for a client in Newark and I found this place on Yelp. What a great butcher shop....VERY clean and the staff was very friendly. The quality of the cold cuts were fantastic and I got nothing but positive remarks from the dozen people I was presenting to, As I was leaving Chris, the owner, helped me out the door and brought some additional condiments out to my car for me, This type of service is truly a lost art these days. Wouldn't recommend coming here for sandwiches. Three friends and I came in and waited at least 20 mins for them to make sandwiches (probably longer). I ordered a Frank sandwich, which came with roast beef and cheese. The roast beef was all on the top, essentially outside of the sandwich, and the cheese was just melted on the bottom onto the bread? Very confusing and not satisfactory for lunch. I asked for lettuce and tomato and the staff seemed very confused about that. Sure they're a good meat shop, but definitely wouldn't recommend coming in for lunch. read more

As I worked through the lessons in Cordon Bleu at Home, the staff here was always ready and willing to prep the meat to the standards specified by the Chef. I was driving through Delaware and wanted to pick up meat for dinner. I saw the reviews for Herman's meat so I detoured and went there. I was very disappointed. The meat is not on display so you have to trust the butcher. You tell them you want at least 1 inch steak for the grill for 4 people. You agree to the $30.00 a pound price. When the meat was cut I was not shown it to confirm it was good for me. When handed the steak I questioned the weight because the package was very light and never saw the item being weighted. When I got home to put the item on the grill it was two very fatty thin bone in rib eye steaks that was not worth the $68.00 I paid for the meat. I know they have been in business for years but disappointed in the quality, the amount of fat (I know rib eyes are fatty but like this) and type of service never even showing me the product before I bought. I told them I stopped because I saw there reviews but it was a very very bad experience. I would caution anyone who goes there to ask to see what you are getting before you pay. After 10 seconds of walking in the front door of Herman's Meat Shoppe, I was kicking myself wondering why I hadn't stopped in sooner. This is the real deal folks. What struck me first, is how tiny the store is. And in particular, no customer facing meat refrigerator dispalying the goods. No worries... the staff is well equipped to help you get what you need, then absolutely meticulously butcher, trim and do all those things no one else seems to be able to do anymore, in front of your eyes. I grabbed a bunch of stuff on my first trip, including Delmonico steaks (cut to my desired thickness), beef/pork/veal mix (ground to order), pork chops (again, cut to order), all trimmed up, cleaned and packed for either the freezer or ready to go. The deli counter offers real oven roasted turkey and other goodies. Also, plenty of stuff in the frig and freezer packaged and ready to go. I'll be back. read more

Herman's is a a nod to business "the way it used to be". This mom & pop meat shop takes a lot of pride in their products. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly and clearly excited about what they do. Aside from the fact that this is a real Newark institution, it's one of the few places you can get grass-fed, local meat, poultry, venison, lamb and bison as well as custom cuts, and offal. I don't eat meat but my husband does and I was looking for quality chicken. I bought ground turkey, ground beef and boneless chicken breast with skin on. Each item was wrapped beautifully and I even asked them to butterfly the chicken breasts which they did. I am very happy with the curbside service. My husband and I came in for some beef short ribs. The little shop was tiny and cozy and the staff was very knowledgable and helpful. The only annoying part was it took a little too long getting out the door even though it wasn't busy. However, this didn't spoil the experience because they were very nice and helpful. The quality of our meat was amazing and you can really taste a difference in the quality and freshness from that of a grocery store. It's more expensive but it's worth it to have healthier meat. We made a 5 star dish out of it. read more

Buyer beware. I should have known as soon as I walked in the door and saw that there were no prices listed for the meat that this place was going to charge a ridiculous amount of money for their meat. I wanted to get some filet for Father's Day. Normally I would have gone to a grocery store and bought an uncut tenderloin, probably 5 pounds or so, for about $70 and hand cut some steaks myself. It's easy to do yourself. But since I was in Newark and had seen Hermans before I thought I'd stop there and try their meat. I needed 4 steaks, each about 2" thick, so that's what I ordered. Service was pretty slow but I wasn't in a hurry, so no big deal. When the steaks were cut and wrapped they brought them up to the register. Total weight was 25 ounces. Pretty light weight for 4 steaks but I didn't say anything. Then came the sticker shock. $68 for 25 ounces of steak. I couldn't believe it. The steak isn't anything special and certainly not worth $44 a pound. I thought for a minute about telling them I wasn't going to take them, but realized this was partly my fault for not asking the price per pound. The moral of the story is that if you go to Hermans you need to ask about the price for meat before you decide to buy it, and expect to pay ridiculously high prices for average quality meat. read more

Fantastic! I visited Hermans today to pick up 10 lbs. of hamburger meat for a large party at our house. Out kids and other were coming out of town so I wanted to make it special, yet traditional - Hamburgers and Dogs! Well, I stopped by Hermans to buy the hamburger meat. 1) The woman who helped me (sorry, didn't get her name), was extremely nice and remembered me from calling in the week before, inquiring about their ground beef. 2) She asked me if how I wanted it packaged, or if I wanted them to make them in hamburger patties - handmade! 3) I told her that "Wow, you can make 32 patties?". She said, "Of course, that's what we do, and you can spend more time with your guests.". So, I walked out with 32 premade hamburger patties of the best meat in Delaware, and anxious to serve our guests. Thank you, Herman's you are the best! I have not had this type of service in years. I promise you that I do not know the owner, and this is not a fake review. Go there, buy your meat, and you will never go anywhere else! read more

This place is honestly the best store to get truly fresh food - meats, fish, and vegetables alike. They are extremely accommodating to your order as they offer butcher services and their sandwiches are delicious as well! Just visited last night, and so glad that I did! The other reviewers are spot on. 1) Amazingly warm, friendly experience 2) If you've only bought supermarket meat before (as I had), prepare to be amazed by how different this high quality meat looks, feels, and tastes. 3) Very clean and organized. Herman's also has very good produce, though pretty darn expensive. I'll probably just stick to their meats. I couldn't imagine someone visiting and not wanting to come back. It's definitely a "feel good" place. So refreshing in an age where most businesses skimp on quality and don't care about really connecting with customers. Weird. A butcher. You don't have to go to Acme to have a post-teen breathe on your meat and wonder to himself whether you smoke dope. If the concept of running errands (plural) isn't foreign, you'll be happy to know that Herman's is about as good quality-wise as Stoltzfus over at NC Farmer's Market, though with a smaller selection. Good job with cold cuts, etc. Still like the Galvinell stuff from Whimsical better for my porcine goods. read more

Newark is fortunate to have such a high quality meat shop. Great products and wonderful, personable, service. Living in Virginia it is hard to get here too often, but stop whenever we are in the Philly area visiting family. Chris and the staff are fabulous...knowledgeable and ready to serve.
