Herzog Kitchen & Bath - Backer board showing through wall grout

Herzog Kitchen & Bath

(5 reviews)

Do not recommend…read more After using Herzog Kitchen and Bath for a successful kitchen remodel many years ago, we turned to them when it was time for a master bath remodel. Herzog was so off the mark with a design plan that we ended up hiring a designer outside of their company. At this point we were still wanting to use them because the contracting work in our kitchen was well done and we expected the same level of attention to our bathroom so we stuck with them. We had also signed a contract that would allow them to keep $10,000 if we backed out. Touching base with Deb and Heather proved difficult on most occasions and was even a joke openly laughed about with sub-contractors who couldn't get them to answer their phone. After the project was finished (not on time) by Herzog, the grout in our shower failed after two months... completely came out of the shower floor. Ryan wanted to use an epoxy grout and after assuring my husband and I that the color of the grout would match the original color and taking out the grout wouldn't chip our tile, Ryan put in the wrong color epoxy grout and chipped nearly every single floor tile all along each edge. He also didn't remove all of the original grout on the floor so we had two-toned grout at this point. After 1 week this grout peeled out in our shower floor... Ryan came back and assured us he had a new, heavier duty epoxy product that would be the right color, be super durable and look great. He told us he would do a test to make sure the grout was the correct color before applying it to the floor because once this grout was applied it wouldn't be able to be removed. He didn't do this. He told us that if it was done incorrectly this third time he would remove the tile floor and replace it since removing the grout wouldn't be an option. We even agreed that he would order the floor tile just in case he needed it and so we wouldn't have to wait for it to arrive. We trusted him. We completely trusted him. We shouldn't have. Ryan applied this super heavy-duty epoxy grout and it was the wrong color. Much darker than the original. He also smeared the epoxy grout all over our natural finish stone tile which immediately plastisized our tile, made it shiny and slick... it basically ruined our tile. It was dangerous, it changed the quality of the tile and changed its coloring. Herzog and I tried multiple fixes to get this residue out of our tile and nothing removed the grout residue from our natural stone. They all agreed it looked bad and all agreed the color was wrong. They said they were sorry and wanted to get a rep from the company out to see the mess so they could be reimbursed for the work they were going to have to do replacing our floor. They wanted to blame the rep for their mistakes. The rep for the product agreed it was installer error, not product error and they would not reimburse Herzog. This was the point that Herzog said they would not replace our floor. Ryan had three colors of grout in our new floor, he had plastisized our tile with epoxy residue and he chipped almost every tile on our floor.... He didn't stand by his work and didn't keep his word. He stopped returning our calls and instead had Deb call us. She told us that we could "paint" the grout with a special paint and this was all they were willing to do for us. .. This product has a life of about 12 months (they had us call their rep to verify how great the product would be and this is what they told us) and would need to be redone by us on repeat for the rest of the life of our bathroom. This was Herzog's solution to a brand new $30,000 bath remodel that had been solely messed up by Ryan..... Fast forward 4 months and the grout on the shower walls is coming off and the orange backer board is showing through. Herzog used to do good work, but they have dropped the ball. I would never recommend them to anyone and I am so sad we used them. All of this mess is documented with photos of anyone is interested in seeing them.

Herzog is the only company that gave us a design that we loved (we had a very narrow space to work with so other companies found it challenging to do anything different than what it already looked like). As far as pricing, they were middle of the road. We have learned from redoing almost our entire house to never go with the cheapest option, so we knew Herzog was the way to go, and we were correct. Heather helped us pick out colors, designs, and even helped us pick a kitchen table and new light fixture. We liked that it was the same person doing all the work and if he brought anyone in, he introduced us first so we knew who was going to be in our home. Ryan was also very sweet to our children and they still ask us when he is coming over to "build things". We were planning on just fixing up the kitchen so we could sell the house. Our realtor said that we could now get about $30k more for our house if we sold it, but we love it so much we might not move! Thank you Herzog! We love our kitchen, and so does everyone else!

PURE Home Design

Pure Home Design literally cured my Drye Eye Disease with their knowledge! Furthermore, I am one of…read morethe only patients to "graduate" from my specialist's practice and not have to end up permanently on Restasis or similar and it is ALL David's knowledge that got me there! I had had Dry Eye Disease ( currently an "uncurable multifactorial" disease) for several years when I first began to work with David and PURE home design. After a trip away from home, I began to suspect that it was my wool carpet (which I thought was natural and was not at all!) that was triggering this issue. David helped me figure out how to test for VOC's in my home (which I wanted to do), and more importantly which wool carpet and pad I could replace my existing product with that was actually fully natural and untreated with formaldehyde and insect repellent ( permethrin). I myself have a background in design but was totally unfamiliar with the products and procedures David told me about. They completely changed my life! They really did! 1 month after I replaced my carpet, I went into the lab to get my cortisol tested (it had been high for years and nothing brought it down that I had tried). It had gone down 4 points to the middle of the normal range! It stayed that way now for 2 years. Additionally, within weeks my eyes began to feel better. When I went for a checkup 3 months later things were improving. When I went for a checkup 1 year later ( having not had to go in or use any additional treatments during that entire time), all my testing was normal and my doctor congratulated me and thanked me for teaching her so very much about her specialty! David is an amazing designer and resource. Super patient in going through multiple issues/considerations and remarkably well resourced and thorough! I have no qualms recommending PURE home design to anyone and feel that everyone should put their health and family first and go with them. Most interior designers have no idea about these types of issues or what products to use to replace the customary ones. There is a lot of "greenwashing" in the industry. If you truly want both a beautiful and healthy home for your family, you have come to the right place. Thank you David!

SKD assisted us in designing our kitchen, ordered our cabinets and supplied us with a lighting…read moreplan. Additionally, SKD gave us some guidance on the selection and layout of flooring materials. We worked long distance, and though they came to do two measures (with us covering their expenses), I acted as general for this kitchen. My kitchen: Our kitchen is small and presented profound challenges. The Beginning: Our kitchen is roughly 10 x 14 and each and every wall has either a door and/or a window. Additionally, the places we could locate ventilation were structurally limited, a fact that anyone who has tried to plan a kitchen knows can cause an inordinate number of complications. We had an area of dead space in the kitchen that was created by the fact the back wall of our kitchen contains a door that goes to a small patio. This was space we very much needed to utilize. Additionally, the only way to maximize our space was to design in two blind, but fully accessible corners and to build in a pull out pantry as the original kitchen contained virtually no pantry space for food storage. A number of kitchen designers looked at it and came in with impractical ideas that made no sense for anyone who actually plans to cook in their kitchen. SKD designers are themselves avid cooks and that experience informed their design suggestions in a way it did not inform others. On our wish list: We wanted a light, bright kitchen that opened to our dining room (thus creating a sense of light and social flow) that was also tailored to me, as a serious cook/baker. Our children are grown and we knew we wanted the Wolf 36" range and Subzero 36" refrigerator freezer. Though I have a lot of kitchen equipment, our taste is modernist, clean, white and warm. Thus while our aesthetic is pristine, we also had to maximize the use of absolutely every square inch of space. This is a tall list. The result: In collaboration with SKD, we designed an open concept kitchen with SKD that met each of our functional, aesthetic, ergonomic and light requirements. The cabinets we ordered through SKD are of upper mid-grade quality--absolutely solid, all wood, finely finished. These custom cabinets are similar in quality I think to Brookhaven (?); far above anything Home Depot offers. They are excellent and they are also wholly appropriate to our home; many designers will try to sell you cabinets that are either better than or of lesser quality than is justified by your home. These cabinets were right on target and they will last many years to come. The cabinet hardware--self-closing, hinges, etc.--also is all top of the line. SKD assisted us in selecting blind corner solutions and we are very pleased. In one corner we used the Hafele Lemans blind corner system (which wasted less space and had better movement, in our opinion, than their Magic Corner system). In the other, SKD thought to set up the cabinet so that it opened from the other side--a great call. All selections were practical, ergonomic and high quality. Beneficially, his cabinet company ordered our blind corner lemans system and built it in so that installation once the cabinets arrived was straightforward. While the cabinets were and have been excellent, I note that we had one extremely small grain fault in an upper cabinet door. This was absolutely no problem: the cabinet company immediately offered to replace at their expense--both shipping and post. The replacement is in process, and we have every confidence they totally stand behind their own product. Our kitchen is beautiful. The lighting plans and material guidance were spot-on.
