I recently dined at Coucou with a friend and we had a wonderful time. The ambiance is great, both the outdoor and indoor seating are super cute. Parking in the area is incredibly difficult but they do offer valet service. We were seated right away for our reservation but it took well over 10-15 minutes for our waitress to greet us. She was also fairly inattentive throughout the night, which is why I am knocking off a full star. We ordered cocktails off their menu (I can't remember the names,) but they were delicious! For appetizers, we enjoyed zucchini fritters and grilled prawn cocktail. The fritters were the perfect combination of sweet, savory, and herby. We both loved them. The prawns were also fantastic. Perfectly grilled and juicy, with a delicious dipping sauce. For our mains, we shared the pesto gnocchi and burger. The gnocchi was tasty but I didn't think it was anything special. The burger was thick, juicy, and uniquely flavored due to the red peppers. I really enjoyed it. For dessert, of course we had to try the viral soft serve sundae. The soft serve was creamy and luxurious, and was enhanced with the side toppings of chocolate magic shell, luxardo cherries, and almonds. All in all the meal was great, so why am I giving them 3.5 stars? Mainly for the service and the cost. I understand this is West Hollywood, but I have had dined at plenty of other French restaurants at the same caliber as Coucou that have been a fraction of the cost. We didn't even order some of the "big ticket" items so I don't feel like the cost of the bill was justified. Will I come back? Then, they brought out our bill, but overcharged us. So, a third bill had to be brought out. Also, not a fan of their 20% included gratuity which we knew about going in. Another thing that I don't agree with is their happy hour menu. They state the 3 for $33, however there are still prices listed for each of the happy hour menu items. So, when our table ordered 2 of the 3 for $33 items and then one additional drink from the happy hour menu, they proceeded to charge us the full $20 for the drink price from their dinner menu. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the atmosphere. The French onion dip and whipped cheese were both delicious and easily our favorite starters. The mussels, however, tasted sandy and dirty, and we had to send them back. Our server mentioned they had received a similar complaint the day before, which was disappointing to hear. I ordered the steak frites medium-rare, but it arrived well done. After sending it back, the replacement was much better. The fries were crispy and probably one of the stronger savory dishes. The salmon was just okay--it leaned too heavily into a fishy, saffron-forward flavor. The artichoke hearts tasted almost entirely of lemon and lacked texture and depth. The truffle Brussels sprouts were good, but I was hoping for a much stronger truffle flavor. The cocktails were great, but dessert completely stole the show. The soft serve and chocolate mousse were easily the best things we ate all night and ended the meal on a high note. Overall, Coucou nails the ambiance and provides excellent service, but the food was inconsistent enough that I wouldn't return for dinner. But of course understand that when I imagine the French lounging, especially in relation to fine eateries, I imagine queens and other royals of fine pedigree lounging in Victorian furniture, while in full dress, like the one the Volturi wore or Maria Antoinnette. It was too cold to be outside, even if a nice heater was provided and I am not much of my feet hanging on a stool person. However, all these options were offered to me.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I first ordered their onion soup, the onion tartatine, I think. And this is one of the dishes that I want to like more than I do. For you see, I love grilled onion, and gruyere and toasted bread, but, the soup although good in general runs boring quick. But before I get to explaining more on this point let me put a burning spotlight on the first flaw of the soup: it was scolding hot. Like I took a few bites and felt the burn of its heat burn my tongue. And at the risk of sounding like someone worthy of the guillotine for being too precious to have a head on my shoulders, my tongue remembered and felt the burn the next day. But after eating spoonfuls of varying degrees of soup heat, I could not continue with the soup. It was the same taste spoonful after spoonful. And with the burnt pairings in between I could not do much more but leave it behind. But then I saw a neighbor who had the soup but also had a small bowl of chips. I asked my server I could have some as he delivered another small bowl to my neighnors. He said sure. He offered my neighbor a bowl and she said no and I got those chips. I then put the house chips (that went with the caviar dish as I later found out) into my soup and the experience had change. Now, the soup had crunch, that rich onion flavor that I loved, and I also was surprised with mouthfuls of bread. My once forgotten soup had regained purpose because I had added chips. I know what some will say. I was a brute of the village because I debased a work of art with a marker. I mean I did put chips in a french classic! And to them I said--- the rule of eating that stands above all rules: Eat in which ever manner allows you to enjoy your food most, period. Thus, I took the resources around me to build a plate- or a bowl as the case may be that I loved. Plus, the chips demanded that I have a coke, so the expeirence became complete, in terms of what I was enjoying. And as a last stroke of proof, the woman besides, who had the soup, lefts hers halfway finished. I left my bowl clean. Thus, from that perspective who has the best outlook- the one who made it possible to have an empty bowl, or the one who left her bowl half full? I also had their steak and fries. And I hate to be so direct and curt--- but the steak was the mishap of the night. The flavor was there. The flavor was strong. The flavor was rich and succulent. But the actual steak was tough. Like I held it down with the knife, I held it down with the fork, and as I was cutting it, the plate moved, I knocked off a glaze saucer, one of those small ones that hold ketchup. Someone had to clean up the myself and steak mess, with a rag. The roughness of the steak had casualties. The server was like yeah, it happens with our steak, it being tough. People will ask for it to be butterflied or cut in slices. I should have done that. The steak was the series of bite that broke the spell of my Parisian night. The dessert, as promised, was a delight. The barely frozen fudge strips atop the ice cream were a simple and indulgent. The chocolate sauce was familiar and rich. And their cherry compote, maybe?. was a simple yet unique texture and flavor that elevated the dish to a dessert worthy of a Parisian table. Its cute mint holder was a treat too! My mom and I came here for Apero Hour on Christmas Eve. We were absolutely blown away! For starters, Michelle and Daniel were so lovely -- extremely friendly and attentive, and made sure we had such a fantastic time. The space is so beautiful, you truly feel like you're stepping into a little cafe in Paris. I love the paintings on the walls, the little tables, the small lamps on the tables, even the bathroom framed in conversational rooster art is so fun and adorable. And the food, oh, the food. The apero hour is an amazing deal -- 3 items for $33. I got a dirty martini, tuna tartare, and zucchini beignets. My mom got an espresso martini, short rib quesadilla, and pommes frites. We also added on the whipped cheese and the ice cream sundae, the latter of which I'd seen all over social media and let's just say it did not disappoint! Everything was absolutely delicious, and the portions are huge -- we took a bunch home with us! Had a terrible experience during martini Monday. Food was just ok but not good enough to make up for our servers terrible attitude. While we were ordering, she was about one second away from rolling her eyes the entire time. Even before "martini gate" happened. When I asked if I could get a gin martini instead of vodka because I don't drink gin: at first, she said "I can ask but they might say no," and then I said, "OK ask" and then she said she would not ask. I don't know what changed in 30 seconds but that was par for the rest of the night. I ordered another drink, which was pure sugar (not how a vesper should be made, I make them at home.) When drinks were brought out, they brought an extra martini and we thought that it might be the waitress being nice and ringing in a gin so we took a sip. About 10 min later, the server came over and said it was a mistake that the extra martini was delivered and we said "don't worry about it...Someone will drink it" to which she replied you'll be charged for it. Which like who charges for their own mistake? So we let her take it. I'm pretty sure I saw her put it up on the beverage well again to be delivered to another table. It had been on our table for over 10 minutes. To be fair, the zucchini beignet was good. The burgers were average, and the hotdog, while inventive, fell short. Aside from our server, all of the buses and food runners were so kind. But our server that had the bad attitude was actually training someone, and if that kind of attitude is what this restaurant values then my vibes just don't align with them, and there are better places to go. The folks are happy. I wrote an extensive review that disappeared mysteriously, so I had to start all over and taste everything again... The reason we came was the zucchini beignets. third time is a charm. i dislike zucchini, so this is an eventful moment. And also because it's a French restaurant that I could eat at which is not a daily occurrence. (I'm vegetarian) The artichoke hearts actually are marinated in a lemonade marinade that also has some chili flakes which made it a little hot for me personally. My mom who also does not like spicy, loved it. The pesto sauce it comes with is excellent. My father is extremely satisfied with the ceviche. My mom also concurred that it was most excellent. That is saying a lot. The tuna tartar was also good he said. It sounds like not as good, but he was still happy. I enjoyed the COUCOU Sour. Twice. added a lemon twist. not too sweet. I was not a fan of the Kir Royall or the weird bubbles that has Chardonnay and Pinto Noir in a bubbly format. The gnocchi which has shifted from its previous less substantial version, is now very good. much better. a fair amount of pine nuts and crunchy croutons add a lot. the pesto is lovely and the seared gnocchi is a delight. Happy Hour was great 3 for $33 we ordered all the apps excluding the oysters and the steak tartare. The fried olives, the Brussel sprouts, the prawn cocktail and the tuna tartare were my favorite from the apps. The ice cream with chocolate was also really delicious. The ambience and aesthetic in the restaurant is amazing, the outdoor patio has heaters making it worthwhile dining outside during the fall. Our waiter was very friendly and gave us his honest recommendations. He also brought a chocolate mousse dessert with a candle for our bday girl- we didn't ask either so that was nice of him to recall our convo at the start of our visit. The host was also very polite which is always the first part of any dining experience. We did not have a reservation, but were seated right away; we visited on a Thursday around 5pm we were one of the new parties to dine in but the restaurant quickly filled up inside and outside. This place completely blew me away. The steak was absolutely incredible. Perfectly cooked, tender, and full of flavor. The fries and the sauce served with the steak were just as impressive. The sauce especially transported me straight to France. Rich, balanced, and elegant. Every bite felt refined. And the burger? Hands down the most gourmet burger I have ever had. It was luxurious, beautifully crafted, and unbelievably delicious. Not your average burger at all. This is next level dining disguised as comfort food. The appetizers, the drinks, everything we ordered was outstanding. You can taste the quality in every detail. It feels like a high end European brasserie experience. Now the only issue, and it is a big one. There is an automatic 20 percent service charge that goes to the restaurant, not to the servers. We specifically asked our server if the tip was included and she told us no, that the 20 percent goes to the restaurant and not to them. That creates a very uncomfortable situation. If you care about the server, you feel pressured to tip on top of the 20 percent, which essentially turns it into 40 percent in service charges. That is simply not standard practice anywhere else in California. It is not fair to the guests and it is not fair to the wait staff. This policy really needs to be reconsidered because the food and overall experience are excellent, and this is the only thing that would stop people from becoming regulars. If they fix that policy, this place will be unstoppable. The food truly deserves it. read more
