This is our goto place for steam crabs. Crabs are always heavy and loaded with seasoning. There's a variety of sizes but I recommend ordering Jumbos or Whales. This weekend, jumbos ran $120/dozen...expensive but I only eat crabs out occasionally. Along with the crabs, we ordered cream of crab soup, steamed shrimp & onions, and corn on the cob. Everything was great! I'm always impressed with the staff! Our waiter was very busy but he made time to chat (I forgot his name but he worked at The Prime Rib). I grew up in Eastern Baltimore County, but had never been here before. I came back to town to surprise my mom for Mother's Day and decided to take her here. Holy guacamole, is this place amazing! Honestly, we did not have one bad thing here and they were slammed. It goes to show that they are a step above, if they can cook amazing dishes while being incredibly busy. We stopped in based on a friend's recommendation. When we arrived, we were told that we couldn't order crabs because we hadn't called ahead to reserve any. I guess that's good to know for future reference, but didn't do us any good tonight. There were numerous tables piled high with large crabs, and they smelled really good. Sadly, we had to go without. Our server was fairly inattentive for our entire visit, likely due to the new 18% instant gratuity on all checks. We waited over ten minutes for him to show up and take our order, so we were already ready to order drinks, an appetizer, and our entrees. We opted for the deviled eggs with lump crab appetizer. It was a basic, basic deviled egg, with no relish, and a sad lump of crab shoved into each one. In a missed opportunity, they were dusted with paprika instead of Old Bay, which one would expect of a "seafood" restaurant in Maryland. My wife's first bite had a large piece of crab shell in it. They were nearly flavorless and definitely not worth the $7. I was in the mood for something fairly basic, so I ordered shrimp scampi on angel hair pasta. The scampi sauce was thicker than any scampi I've had before, but it was tasty, and the shrimp were tender. All of the mushrooms had a bit of scorched, plasticky flavor though. My wife had the Sandwich Chesapeake, which sounds pretty good, but was "Meh" according to her. The shrimp salad was tender and not drowned in mayo, but the crab cake was merely OK and tiny. Toasted white bread would've been preferable to the 12-grain bread; if there were any alternatives, none were offered. My side salad was pretty sad -- bagged mixed lettuce and a few grape tomatoes and cucumber slices, served with a gelatinous Italian dressing. The rolls were cheap freezer fare, barely warm, and served with margarine. Gross. We heard another patron request "real butter" for hers, but I don't think it would've made the rolls taste much better. Our waiter breezed by our table about 15 minutes after our meals had arrived, and kept going. We didn't even have a chance to ask for drink refills, and he didn't think to do so on his own. When he finally returned ~ten minutes later, we were ready for boxes and the check. He was prompt with those, likely because he wanted to get that next 18% table in. There were numerous Zagat plaques adorning the walls, but they clearly weren't looking to add another one this year. Maybe the only thing worth getting is the crabs? I really was trying to hold off posting a negative review for a small local business, but I can't bite my tongue anymore! For the past 3-4 times we have been to Costas Inn, the service was painfully bad. There will literally be 5-6 bartenders/servers behind the bar and it still takes at least 15 minutes to even be greeted. God forbid you need a refill or need your server for anything, because that will then take another 15-20 mins. I think the worst part is that 18% gratuity is automatically added to every check regardless of party size. It truly seems like they don't care about how they take care of their customers, because they know they're still going to get money out of you!!! The main reason I'm writing this review is because of the experience we just had (10/10/23). We came in for the O's game & sat on the bar side, which was all self seating we were told. It was a little busy but bartenders/servers were just standing around chatting with each other. We waited about 20 mins for a lady to ask us if we've been helped yet, the answer obviously was no. She then grabbed our drinks and took our order. I got a half dozen of medium crabs & my boyfriend got the roast beef melt. Our food finally comes out and everything was fine but refills still took 20-30 mins to get (pretty awful when you're eating heavily seasoned crabs) but whatever, I survived. The crabs were just "okay", they were all very dry and definitely did not taste like MD Crabs, but it was still okay. I then got to my last 2 crabs, which tasted like straight ammonia (barf). From working at a seafood market previously, I know that obviously means that the crabs were already dead before they steamed them. I stopped eating them & patiently waited for our server to come back *cue another 15 mins* to A. Tell her about the bad crabs and B. Ask for drink refills...again...she was very nice and asked if she wanted us for them to take off the 2 crabs off of our check (obviously yes) so then she comes back and CHECKS THROUGH MY PICKED CRABS AND SMELLS THEM ??? as if I was lying about 2 crabs being bad??? and then goes "Oh yeah, they are bad!"... obviously they are or else I wouldn't of even mentioned it! Again, a great meal. Hubs and I both had the cream of crab soup to start. A bowl/cup of lushness with some crabmeat,too. Hubs ordered the broiled seafood platter and I had steamed crabs. I made a reservation on Open Table on Monday and the only times left were Saturday at 4:00 or 4:45. I forgot about Mothers Day, snd Derby Day! We were celebrating our Anniversary but that's not a national holiday. Yet The restaurant called in Friday to confirm the reservation. They also asked if we would be ordering crabs as those were in high demand. I liked that we could reserve crabs so not to be disappointed. They were great! The restaurant also asked if we preferred seating in the dining area or the bar/lounge. Since it was only 2 of us, we opted for the bar area. I appreciated the inquiry for our preference of seating. We passed the short wait for our food/crabs by watching all the TV coverage of the Derby and the O's. Hubs seafood platter was amazing! He was quite full finishing all the protein and bagging his fries. We never made it to desert. Caitlyn was our server who kept on top of things cheerfully and efficiently, even while getting drinks from behind the bar. So glad that I picked Costa's for dinner. Charming place. We came here during a family visit on a Sunday night around 9. Place was packed, and for good reason. Host and servers make you feel like old friends as soon as you walk into the doors. Complimentary bread came out hot with light whipped butter. Crab cake was perfect! Highly recommend. Softshell crab sandwich served on white bread with mayo and fresh toppings. Since it was late I didn't want to take the time to eat steamed crabs. But boy was I envious when I saw them coming out! They looked huge! Definitely worth the price, size wise. I'll plan better next time I'm in town and make time to eat crabs at Costas. Too full for dessert but one of the wait staff told us the owner makes some of the desserts himself. So also on my list to try next visit. An evening of fun with friends at Costas Inn ultimately became a topic of discussion because of their outstanding service and experience. A huge thanks to manager Pete who overly extended accommodating our table needs when there were a few things wrong with our order. It was much appreciated that our waiter Jessica along with the manager was apologetic due to the mishaps of our orders. It was great to see that we were respected as consumers, far too many times there are some restaurants who don't. We canoe down from Pennsylvania to eat there for the first time, and we're very impressed with the menu, the quality of the foods, plus our server couldn't have been nicer, and very attentive to all of us.
