Loved, Loved, Loved This Little Wine Spot. I never even knew it was even there. My husband pointed it out and we are big sweet red wine fans, so we wanted to check out there collection. We went around 4ish the lady that helped us find the perfect wine was awesome I wish I would of got her name! We end up trying the "adesso" and I'm drinking it while writing this review and I LOVE it. Definitely one of my new favorite wines. read more

Fab selection of wines and local beers. I was at the Detroit Food Bazaar on Friday and we were chatting about a new seasonal brew from Shorts and wondering where we might be able to find it. Lo and behold--they had it right downstairs! Only one 6 pack left but they had it! Plenty more where that came from as well as fabulous reds, whites, sparklings, etc. Like others have said, it's not the fanciest of spots or as big as some of my other favorite wine joints like Merchant's but impressive nonetheless. The staff is super friendly and helpful; the selection is varied and not terribly expensive to boot. It'll be easy to find a great bottle for every price point and for every occasion--from a casual dinner to a celebration or anniversary. I've come here for years & love it. Not the massive selection you get at some wine super-store type places, but like the old hardware slogan, "if we don't have it, you don't need it." Noticing our cellar was totally devoid of white, I stopped by Cost Plus & asked Kim for her recommendation for half a dozen whites, mentioning that I'm not a great admirer of Chardonnay. She asked for a general price range (I said $8-$20), & selected various options giving suggestions/commentary/options. And so far, her choices have been delightful. I've also ordered cases from her - something I've liked at a restaurant & gone to her to see if she could get (almost always has been able to). Wonderful, friendly, reasonably priced local business - you can't go wrong here. read more

After you've shopped for produce at Eastern Market, you can slide over a block to Cost Plus Wine to get something to compliment the fresh ingredients you've just bought. Cost Plus Wine isn't the biggest wine store I've been in, but the selection is good but not snobby. They display the wines in cardboard boxes, and the store has wooden floors and an open feel as if it's an old fashioned five-and-dime or a general store. When I was visiting recently, the staff were talking over wines and the possibility of special orders with customers. They had plenty of wines for $20 and up, but also a surprising amount for under $10, even some nice Rieslings for around $5 or $6. read more

As a small wine merchant who has carefully curated a small portfolio of global wines for over a decade, I'm proud of the discoveries I make. And I love to peruse wine shops in distant cities whenever travel takes me there, and my schedule allows. There are few better ways to get to know - and remember - a city, as its wine shops are the condensed essence of a city itself. Much as are its book stores, though the former aren't disappearing quite as rapidly. When I walked into Cost Plus Wine, I knew I was in for a treat. Nothing about it said "Designer" - it was clearly not on this earth to impress, but to share a passion in a non-intimidating environment. Step inside and you'll see walls covered in faded posters, awards and local magazine covers, and folders stuffed full of menus for the many surrounding eateries in Detroit's very cool Eastern Market area. But most of all, the owner and I seemed to time-share a palate. There on his shelves were no less than a dozen of the same selections I had made, and at much the same, reasonable prices. I met Dan the owner a few years ago through a friend. He's a big boy and always wears a ball cap. When you look at him you'd think NFL lineman or truck driver. When you start talking to him, you realize this guy is a freaking genius when it comes to wine. You tell him the price, or region, or style, or simply ask him to pick something for you and he will not only give you something good but something that you probably wouldn't have ever thought to buy. I always walk out with something for under 15 bucks that is truly awesome. Decent beer selection but this is a great place for a wine novice to get started. read more

Another overrated Eastern Market institution. Having shopped at Zachy's in NYC and Binny's in Chicago, I have seen what a wine/beer/spirits specialist shop should be. Ok, I understand that this is Detroit and a much smaller market, but come on. Discount Drinks in Wyandotte has as large a wine selection, and if you are looking for beer, Cost Plus really sucks. I was checking the dates on some of the bottles and they clearly do not move much beer. Its pretty sad that this is the best the city has to offer. read more

Not an immense selection of wine, but the owner and the employees here are the best - helpful, polite, patient and very knowledgeable. You can tell that they are very interested in the concept of "democratizing" wine - they want good wine to come to the masses. Kudos all the way on that. It's admirable, and I'm genuinely impressed with their efforts. Very convenient if you're walking around Eastern Market, but not too convenient otherwise. I've been here a handful of times and I always enjoy this shoppe. It's totally quaint and chill and the selection, while overwhelming, is not too intimidating. The staff is usually around but not under foot and they have plenty of recommendations for the novice or connoisseur alike. Friendly, knowledgable family-feel staff makes you feel right at home. They offer wine of all price ranges and all sorts of grapes from a lot of countries. I got a favorite Cote du Rhone of mine that had been running $15 in most stores for $7.99 at Cost Plus. A STEAL. They also have a nice range of exotic beers. My first time here and it was a great experience. My MIL was looking for a wine a friend had bought her with nothing but a description of the bottle and taste...even though a tall request, after taste-testing a few bottles she was able to find it. Compared bottles when we got home and it sure was the right one! Fun, historic, welcoming environment. Great deals too if you need a place to buy a special occasion wine or even just an everyday one. We will probably go back to Eastern Market sooner rather than later just to go back here! read more

Wine is an important part of my life, and I wouldn't entrust just anyone in selling me my drink of choice, that's why I put my faith and palate into the hands of the folks over at Eastern Market's Cost Plus Wine Shop. The walls of Cost Plus are lined with bottles like books in a library, categorized fantastically, making the shopping experience much more enjoyable. Most importantly, the staff knows what they're talking about and they talk to customers in terms they can comprehend, none of that oakey tannins crap. Although, they are knowledgeable about the vocabulary amongst the world of wine. The staff at Cost Plus will find the perfect wine for any occasion and for any type of budget. And they never scowl when I tell them I'm not looking for anything terribly expensive, they're just excited that you're excited about wine. read more

Decent selection of wine and beer. Fair amount of local beer but very little MI wine. They frequently have bargains and clearance items. You can get a case of a good beer for about $15. One downside, as others have mentioned, some of the beer is stored near a window so there might be some sun exposure. However, this window faces west. Direct sunlight only comes in during the evening, after the shop is closed and the curtains are closed. read more

This is a very low key place. I've rode pass this place, I don't know how many times and didn't notice it until one day my coworker took us here. They have a very wide range to choose from. There are two places to buy good wine in the city of Detroit. This place, and the newly-officially-opened Motor City Wine above Foran's. MCW has later hours and also allows you to relax and enjoy a glass or bottle, but they don't have the beer selection. Surprise; this is another post about beer. If you're any kind of serious wine or beer drinker, living in the city can be frustrating--we have tons of great bars that serve fantastic beer and wine, but very few options where we can actually BUY it (luckily at places like Foran's you actually can buy a six-pack to go). I mean SURE you can go to CVS or Rite Aid and pick up a gallon of Turning Leaf if that's what you're into...*cringe* The rest of us drive out to the 'burbs. Cost Plus is a great little shop with a nicely-curated (though small) selection that has an average price range around $15. You can also dig out some great finds for around $8 if you're willing to experiment: I'll pretty much try anything $12 and under just to see if it's any good, and some of the bottles I've picked up there have absolutely blown me away (the Terra Andina Carmenere is something I will always tell everyone about, because it is so cheap at $8-9 and is OUTSTANDING). They've also got a nice selection of Michigan wines, from labels like Chateau Grand Traverse, Peninsula Cellars, and Black Star Farms. (There's a Cab Franc from Peninsula I'm eyeing at the moment.) AND--they've got a great selection of Michigan craft beers. Not the greatest in the area, but the best of any wine/beer store in the city. The selection is once again small but well-curated. When I stopped in today to fetch my offerings for Detoberfest, I found half the selection wiped out (apparently I wasn't the only Detroiter who had that idea), but they regularly have plenty from labels like Bells (things like Oracle and Two-Hearted, not just Oberon), Short's (a sixer of Soft Parade bought a couple of weeks ago for $8.99 was apparently mislabeled; it is now $10.75), Millking It, and even a few non-Michigan crafts including this Blueberry Ale from NY which shhhhhhhhhh don't tell anyone but I bought because I'm curious to try it. They've also got Jolly Pumpkin, Young's Double Chocolate Stout (only $3.99), Lindemans Lambic Framboise, Magners Irish Cider...the only thing you need to bear in mind is that they often sell out of items, so something you found there last time might not be there on your next visit depending on whether they've ordered more or if they're still waiting for the delivery. A little annoying when you're accustomed to bigger operations that are always fully-stocked, but this comes with the territory of being a small, independent boutique shop. Also, if you've got a particular taste in mind but aren't sure what to go with, the owner really knows his stuff. Chris M. said it best: "He's a big boy and always wears a ball cap. When you look at him you'd think NFL lineman or truck driver. When you start talking to him, you realize this guy is a freaking genius when it comes to wine." Saturdays get crazy because that's when the Market is in full swing, and they are unfortunately closed Sundays and Mondays (again, a little annoying). But if you want great one-on-one service, swing by during the week (before 5PM though...you know where I'm going with this) and really take the time to peruse their offerings; there's A LOT of hidden gems to be found, and at some of the best prices out of all the other specialty wine shops in the metro area. read more

I Love Love Love this Wine shop! Anytime I am down in the Eastern Market area I stop in and stock up on my Favorite Wines - Stella Rosa, Castello del Poggio a D'asti Moscato. If they dont have the wine you would like they order it for you quickly. The employees are very knowledgeable about the wines and also offer samples. Cost Plus is an excellent location to stop at for all your wine and liquor needs. Located in Detroit's Eastern Market Cost Plus is one of the historic businesses of the area. The only down side to this establishment is the fact that some of the products are a bit pricey, yet this is not unheard of in the wine business. The service is professional, friendly, and very knowledgeable. Like many of the business in the Eastern Market area, Cost Plus is also family owned, so there is a great deal of history within it. read more
