Because my usual stylist was not there the day I had my hair done, I had someone else do it and showed her pictures how I wanted it done and she totally screwed it up and cut it too damn short!!! I will never have Jess do it again!! She needs to go back to cosmetology school and learn to cut hair how the customer asks for it to be done! So not worth paying 25.00 damn dollars! read more

I wanted to transition my summer highlights to a light caramel brown color and Melissa did just that!!! I know for most girls it is hard to switch from a old hairstylist to a new hairstylist but sometimes you have to go with your gut instinct. Very clean and beautiful hair salon in a convenient location. The staff was friendly and professional. They asked if I would like to purchase any additional products or services without being pushy. Tracie did a great job cutting my hair. All I wanted was to cut two inches off the length and do some "face shaping" in the front and she gave me exactly that. She definitely pays close attention to detail and double checked that my hair was the same length all around. All around I had a great experience and will be returning in the future. read more

My review is really for Melissa since I haven't had my haircut by anyone else (and I probably won't!) Melissa came over from MasterCuts in the Meridian Mall (fyi for those of you who loved her and found she'd left). My first experience with her was over at MasterCuts, but I was lucky to have caught her one of her last days so when I asked for her name, she let me know she was moving to HairMasters. I usually go to the Douglas J Institute, but as a graduate student, I really don't have 1.5-2 hours of my life to spend in a hair salon. Luckily, haircuts at HairMasters starts at $17, which is perfect! I'm really bad with describing how I want my hair cut, which is another reason why Douglas J Institute was hard- the student stylists rely more on verbal description than pictures. When I first went to Melissa, I was going in for a trim but wanted a slight change in hairstyle. The problem was that I couldn't describe how I wanted it to look different. Instead, I just showed her a picture. She took one look, asked a few clarifying questions such as length, amount of layers, etc. and literally recreated on my head what I was looking at in the picture! I was super impressed, especially because I love wearing my hair short, but the only people I trusted to cut it short was my aunt and my hair stylist of 6 years our in California. Hence, I went back to her! The second time I went to Melissa was earlier this week at HairMasters. Again, I just took her two pictures I had found online and asked for a combination of them (one shot of the front, one of the back). She studied the photos, looked at the amount of hair I have and explained how she would replicate the images but change it so that it would be more tailored toward me. She's really fun to talk to, super friendly but not in the annoying way that some stylists can be. She's been doing hair for 10 years now, and loves everything from cut to color. Updos are her least favorite, but I have a feeling that if you asked her for a tight, tidy updo, she'd do a fabulous job :) I spent my first year and half in East Lansing wearing my hair longer partly because I wasn't willing to gamble $25+ on a complete stranger to cut my fine, stick-straight, Asian hair short. I'm glad I found Melissa, though! I had called last Friday to see if she was working, and she wasn't - not sure if that's a weekly thing or if she just was taking that one day off. She took me the same day I called to make an appointment, but it was a few hours after I had called. So if you're looking for a new stylist, or if you're like me a year ago and are in desperate need of someone you can trust to take care of your hair, Melissa's your girl! read more

The only reason I give this place five stars is for hairdresser JAY! He is awesome, awesome, awesome. Everyone who goes to him once, becomes a regular! Make sure he washes your hair too, you'll get a "loose your mind" hair massage. read more

Hannah at this location is amazing! For any woman with short hair, the first trip to a new stylist can be a nerve-wracking experience -- will you get what you asked for, or will you get some horrendous-looking hacked-up version of what they think a pixie cut looks like? When I went to see Hannah, she looked closely at the pictures I showed her, and then asked a lot of questions "Do you want this part wispy or blunt?" "Do you want this part straight or pointed?" "How much texture here?" all before scissors ever touched my hair, and she continued to check in and ask questions throughout the process to make sure we were on the same page about everything. She was also very knowledgeable about how to customize the haircut to look good with my face shape. The end result was an amazing haircut that was exactly what I had been hoping for! I would strongly encourage any woman looking for someone who can do short hair and do it WELL to go see Hannah -- you will be in very good hands with her! read more

My husband went in and got a cut from a Hannah a few weeks ago and he loved it! I decided to also see her yesterday, and she really listened, gave her input and suggestions, which sounded perfect and they really we're perfect! Going from a bob to V cut is a huge difference, but she gave me an awesome start and now that it's the next day and I'm styling it myself, my face framing layers she suggested and are adorable. Totally going to here for now on! (I didn't get any chemical services, but I would definitely give it a try!) read more

I called in seeking the soonest appointment and Jay got me in 10 minutes later. He was such a pleasure to spend an hour with. I left extremely happy with both my haircut and brow wax. Jay is the best. I have been going to him for years. All I have to do is sit down, and he does the rest. I have bad hair and he makes the best of it. He deserves his own salon. He is the only reason I go to this place. If he ever leaves, I will too. The salon itself is dated and tired. It is definitely not hip or trendy. How much could some paint, ceiling tiles, and some new pictures cost? It is bland and depressing in there. The thing I don't like, (and this is not the stylists fault, corporate policy) is they charge more for a "Master Stylist". It should be a flat price no matter who cuts your hair. It is also getting VERY expensive, $20 for a simple mens haircut (10 minutes with clippers) is way too high when you can go to other similar chains for about half that much. Jay gets 5 stars, but the other issues bring the overall score to 3 stars. read more

Andrea and Tracey both do a great job. Andrea gave me a shorter hairstyle that's perfect, she has done both highlights and lowlights on my hair, I get compliments all the time. I also get my eyebrows done, I have been going here a long time, I like how it is consistent. Very friendly place. read more

Ugh. Well, I had to call in to work today because I couldn't stop crying... this lady BUTCHERED my eyebrows. They're not even at ALL. If I look normal, one eyebrow looks like it's raised and the other is just a strip across my forehead. Needless to say I'M NEVER EVER EVER GOING BACK. I'll never recommend this place. read more

Disappointed and not impressed. I went here for a last minute cut and deep condition. I have ringlet/coiled curly hair, kept very short (4-6 inches long, stretched straight). I informed the stylist I simply needed it trimmed/cut to all the same length. No layers, no parting, no style, just even and one length all over. She seemed puzzled by this and asked me questions that didn't pertain to my hair type. I should have taken this as a sign that she was unfamiliar with real curls, but thought maybe she was just trying to be thorough. After conditioning my hair, she seemed confused about the process of scrunching/blotting curls to dry them to avoid breaking the curl patters and causing frizz and she proceeded to quickly shake her fingers through and muss up my curls, as if they were permed curls or straight hair, which caused more frizz and distress on my curls. Also, I've never been to a salon that deep conditions before cutting. In the end, I ended up with hair that's at least a couple inches shorter throughout the back than anything in the front, and much shorter than I asked. But my dry ends are gone, and they did accomodate me last minute. read more
