Very unhappy with Douglas j salon. They have steadily lost their way since the founding father has passed. Since then, their managerial skills have declined considerably. Unannounced they decided to no longer purchase Aveda color. Their colorists were not advised about this nor did they have an explanation for the colorist to give to the client. What do you do when you sit down for a hair color and the colorist changes the product you love? You have no choice right then and there. I am not happy at all with the results, sure they will offer to fix it. Who wants to spend another 2 hrs at the salon. A phone call to warn me would have avoided my INTENSE dislike with how this was handled. I will find a better salon that treats their customers with respect. It is totally unprofessional to be treated like this without a call to give me an option to change my hair color treatment before I actually came in for my appointment. read more

LOTS of $ for a weak perm that fell out, was stringy and straight and not as nice as the waves I already had. Broken chunks prevented a report so they corrected by a layered cut but it's a straight mess after a while and I have to go in with a curling iron here and there. Was left the first day with a to. I have been a client of my stylist for many years at this location, but sadly, I'm moving on. I had booked a reservation for a February 2025 cut in November 2024. As the appointment approached, I realized I had a conflicting appointment. I went on the website and saw that there was an appointment available with my stylist two days prior to my original. So I cancelled my original appointment and booked the other appointment. I received my reservation confirmation immediately via text and thought I was all set. I received my typical "please confirm" text three days prior to my appointment, to which I responded with the requested C to confirm. As always, there is no response from them with a thank you for confirming, so I thought all was good. I drove 40 minutes at 7:45am in the morning to my 8:30am appointment. When I arrived, I was told that they had no appointment for me and that it appeared my stylist had blocked out this time by filling in her own name. I tried to show them my two texts confirming both my making the appointment over a week prior, and asking me to confirm my appointment just three days before. They were not interested in seeing either of those. They did call and left a brief, nondiscriptive message for my stylist. They also said they could squeeze me in with another stylist. I have seen my stylist for over 10 years. I did not want to spend the kind of money I spend here with a stylist I have never met or seen any of work their work. So I left with nothing but an "I'm sorry, there's nothing we can do for you" I have sat on this two weeks thinking surely my stylist would call and apologize for the misunderstanding and we could work out a time for me to come in, with some sort of discount for the inconvenience. I'm not looking for a free haircut or service here. If I were looking for a handout or freebie, I'd definitely not be getting my hair cut here. But let's be honest...this was not my mistake, I drove 40 minutes each way. I have things to do in my life as well. And to reschedule would again entail me blocking out time and driving this same distance. Surely she knows what happened, right? I'm not so sure she does. Who knows, because there has been NO communication. And I blame the business for that. The front desk people are the first people you see when you come in to an establishment. They set the tone for how things are going to go when there's a problem. They hold a lot of power and they convey how things went down and how they handled it. The woman I encountered wanted no part in seeing my texts of confirmation. I had them right there for her to see. Holding them up. Nope. Can't help you. What? You can help me. You can explain to someone that there was some sort of problem with your booking program. Somehow my confirmed appointment got wiped out. You can explain to the stylist that somehow my confirmed appointment disappeared. You can, but you didn't. At least not while I was there, in front of you. How disappointed I am that I have to come here and leave a discouraging review. Most likely it will spur a response of "We're so sorry this happened to you. Please call the salon so we can fix it". NO. You should have called me right away to fix it. But you probably didn't know because of the first people I encountered when I entered your business, who set the tone of "don't care". At least the is the impression I left with when I was told there was nothing they could do. read more

Very disappointed in my facial. I have been coming to this establishment for years. I have never had an experience like this and questioning if I will ever return. I booked a 90 minute facial under any staff. Before the facial began the person assigned to me said they might have to make adjustments to the time. I asked will that effect the price. They said they won't know until they look at my face. I said ok. That's never been the case in the past. They did their initial look at my skin and said this will need to be a 60 minute facial instead. They then left for 10-15 minutes to prepare the products. The facial left my skin with a white cast. I suspect from using the wrong spf for my skin type. The total came out to be way more than what the 90 minutes would have costed. They added extra services without telling me. In the past they would ask, would you like me to add this to your facial, there will be an up charge. They did less work for more money. I wanted extractions done. They barely touched the areas I wanted them to. They placed the bed at first in such an uncomfortable position. I was sliding backwards practically upside down. I asked them to raise my head multiple times. Overall was an unpleasant experience. read more

Okemos Branch-Colorist: Heather: 10:35 am My name is Eman. I went today for a highlights appointment with Heather. I made a phone call to apologize for being late 20 minutes because of the weather conditions. They asked her and she said it is fine to go. When I arrived, Heather kept wasting time for 35 minutes talking about how not to do what I want. She is imposing her opinion and not respecting or honoring my wishes. I have never ever in my life got encountered with a rude person and a bully like this person. Even though I explained that I need my hair done for the beginning of the school year, and she could have started my hair instead of wasting time, but she didn't want to work. Beginning with criticizing my hair in between the lines, and saying its dark and that I I need to do a full color then highlights and I need to pay around 400$. When I showed her the color I want, she laughed sarcastically saying "oh yea this is not going to happen", and when I showed her the picture of me a year ago with Ashly another perfect colorist who did my hair perfectly and she's not working there anymore. Heather started bullying my hair and saying that I aged and that it doesn't look like the picture anymore. As if she is trying to find excuses not to do what I want, she gave a jealousy mixture of hatred in her tone. She definitely has an attitude issue. Moving to looking at her appointments and intentionally saying that she is busy throughout the whole week. Then looking at my hair in a mean way saying that I have a "lot of hair".....what????. One thing I know, that I will never ever in my life enter this place again. Second, thing I know that I will spread the word about the inhuman and irrespective way and the bossy attitude this Heather showed me - to everyone in the community. Being a mother and a teacher, I felt very humiliated and went out in a deep frustrated feeling that I decided to write what happened, even though I am not a person who would put others in problems. But if I remain silent about being bullied and looked down at, then I will never forgive myself. I am sure there are plenty of hair salons who would like to do what I want with respect and gratitude to the client. As for Heather, I tell her, "it's not my hair that is the problem, it's your lack of professionalism and the lack of mastery of the technique, get yourself some education before you touch people's hair and speak in a snobbish rude way". Making a blond highlights is not a rocket science and I have been doing it all my life, it's not up to you to judge my hair and tell me what to do and impose your opinion.. My message to Aveda, I have been your client for some time and I loved Ashley, however, I believe that your staff need training in how to deal respectfully with the clients, how to greet people and respect their wishes, how to be kind and human, how to speak in a down to earth and nice way. If I spoke to a student like this, I am sure the District will fire me. Even though I will not go again, but I don't want people to be treated in a mean way. Hope charged me $53 for 1- chopped up badly my hair 2- my skin cut with her clippers it's burning I can't sleep 3- check in, to Hope greeting me, shampoo hair cut blow dry, payment to getting in my car all together took only 28 minutes. It was all bad job. 4- After she cut my hair she didn't show my back of hair. She just shoved me out of chair and took me downstairs for check out. 5- I told her what I want, but she cut my hair off what she can. 6- I realized she did wrong, so I asked her cut the button as even like bob's haircut. Her reaction was " oh my God, oh my God." She is rude. I don't know who can fix this terrible hair cut and how many months to grow back. I'm very frustrated and suffering with burning skin. Went to Douglas J Salon for the first time last week for a haircut. I'd scheduled my appointment on the website and chosen my stylist randomly from the list of names there, because I live on the edge. Crystal C. asked me what I had in mind and then gave me one of the best haircuts I think I've ever had. She was really genuine and easy to talk to, so it felt like chatting with a friend but then when the chat's over you have an awesome new haircut. I'll go back to her for sure. Quick heads up: as of summer 2022 the roads nearby are a mess and the signage isn't great, so give yourself an extra couple minutes, especially if you haven't been there before. read more

Twice I booked an appointment online and twice they said I didn't have an appointment even though I received a confirmation text. The receptionist was very rude to me when I explained I had a confirmation text. She didn't seem to care. She said someone else was booked at my time. I will never go back to this place again. The prices also went up and it's just not worth the price. There are plenty of other salons to go to that have more respect for clients. I wish Encore never merged with Douglas J. I have been coming to Douglas J for a good 10 years now. Michelle has been my wife and my stylist for the whole time. She has become a good friend and we consider her to be just like family. The whole Douglas J experience is always top notch. Oops. After making this review 3 1/2 years ago I just noticed that I identified Michelle as my wife instead of my wife's stylist. We've worked with Hope Miller and she is fabulous! She recently cut both my 8year old and 4 year olds hair. I've had mine done and my wife is on the books. Hope was the first person to give my 8yr old the hairstyle she wanted rather than what they thought was appropriate. The salon staff are very friendly in a slightly intimidating environment. But I can stop anyone and ask a question. They are all friendly with my children and ready with a smile. read more

My recent first time visit had me a little anxious....I hate trying out a new person for a haircut, and I've had some disasters with color in the past.....I am so totally thrilled with my results, I just can't give enough stars to these 2 professionals! I've gone to DJ for many years & they've always had a no tipping policy. However, when I went to check out last month they asked if I wanted to leave a tip & I was surprised. I called the salon later & they said "tipping is not expected but is appreciated if you feel like you want to". My question is, then why ask people if they want to tip? It puts the customer on the spot, so perhaps just post signs & the customer who chooses to tip will request to do so. So sad to see this change, they should have at least sent a notice to customers beforehand! read more

I was gifted the Bridal package and loved the experience! Riley did my hair and she did an amazing job; I highly recommend seeing her. She makes the experience comfortable and fun. Her work is art! I have been getting my hair cut here for years, and I it broke my heart to move to Chicago and leave this amazing salon! Manila has been cutting my hair for a few years now - she is a *genius*. I had long, curly hair my whole life. She convinced me to get a short cut for the first time in my life, and voila - it looks amazing, and I get stopped on the street by strangers who tell me how gorgeous my hair is. Even on bad hair days. It's unbelievable. Christa is my colorist, and she also does an amazing job. I think, as fake blondes go, I have a very realistic hair color that fits my skin tone perfectly. Asia does my eyebrows, and she is the best at what she does. They always look gorgeous, with a perfect arch. All of these women are sweet and lovely as well. It's not the kind of salon you go to and just read a magazine without looking up in the mirror or talking. Everyone who works here is friendly and engages you in your style. It's a classy, peaceful place as well. I've also occasionally gotten my nails done here, and they are always beautiful. Manicures stay intact for a long time. I decided to give this place a chance, even though I had a bad experience at the Douglas Aveda Institute near MSU a while ago. However, 9 months and super long, thick, heavy, black hair later, I was due for a haircut. Oh and btw, I'm a color virgin. So why not, change my color hair into something pretty, please. I had Christopher as my colorist and Kate as my stylist. Both were really nice, but one was better than the other. Christopher kept tugging on my hair too hard to the point where my neck was leaning back 45 degrees. I'm pretty sure the girl next to me was crying for me. And to make matters worse, I already have major upper back problems. Definitely uncomfortable. Kate was awesome! She was very knowledge and really listened to what I wanted. I LOVE how my hair looks and how it feels! I don't think I ever felt so happy after a haircut. But alas, the color of my hair didn't show at all. I was suppose to have a hint of brown (balayage); but even when Kate walked me outside, all you can see is my jet black hair. Luckily, she said I can get a redo on the color, and after talking to Christopher, I'm getting it done again in 2 weeks. We'll see how that 2nd visit will turn out. If not, I'll definitely come back for the haircut only with Kate. PS. The head massage they do for you when they wash your hair is heavenly! read more
