I'm notoriously bad about getting my hair cut and colored on a regular basis, so when I do make it to the salon, things are typically looking a little rough. Ellie is my go-to stylist at The Head Room, and she is a miracle worker. She is always open to any ideas I have for styling and has great suggestions for how to keep my look fresh while still accommodating for my slacker ways when it comes to touching up my roots, etc. She is very skilled and personable, and I just adore her. I've also brought my young daughter to The Head Room for haircuts with Jamie and Andrea. They both did fantastic work and were very sweet and patient--I imagine preschoolers are typically not stylists' favorite clients, but you wouldn't know it based on our appointments. I feel pricing at the salon is reasonable, on par with what you'll be charged at other similar salons in the area. The only issues I've ever had at the salon, as other reviewers have mentioned, are with booking appointments. It can very challenging to get an appointment for color within a few weeks of calling, so it's necessary to plan ahead quite a bit (not my strong suit). I had one incident where I actually remembered to book my next color and cut at the front desk immediately following an appointment. When I showed up for the next appointment a couple months later, the salon had no record of it. I had the appointment card from the front desk and everything, but there was really nothing that could be done at the time so it was a wasted trip. They were very apologetic and helpful about making a time to squeeze me in the next week, but it was a frustrating experience. Not enough to keep me away but worth mentioning. Overall, a great salon that I highly recommend. Just keep in mind that appointments (especially for color) may need to be booked out a few weeks in advance and if you don't receive a reminder call for your upcoming appointment, it'd be good to contact the salon and confirm your booking before making the trip over. read more

It has been a week since my hair appointment here. I waited to see if I was still in love with my cut and color. I love it. I was mainly concerned with coloring. Made an appointment with Bailey, she text me with questions about what I was looking to do. We shared ideas and pics. I have never had a consult like that pre appointment. When I got there she was excited about what we could do, as was I. Bailey totally got what I was going for and was not disappointed! She did her homework and produced an amazing hair color blend. First, I'd give 5 stars to the amazing receptionist that helped me with moving my car. Broken ankle and I'm not terribly mobile so huge thanks to her!! Kellie did my hair. Cut and color. I told her my hair was too blonde. I prefer light golden brown. She put a darker color but left the entire top without color. Yep. I'm still too blonde. Fine, I'll add low lights next time. I told her my cut was working well. I could finally do something with my hair so just a whisper of a trim. The first cut I saw was over an inch. Too late to fix that. I said something and she replied she was "taking it off the top". I can now do nothing with my hair. She changed the cut. I called today and left a message to cancel my next appointment and if a manager wanted to talk to me about why, to please call me. Whom ever called only offered to cancel my next appointment. Absolutely zero offer of fixing this. If my credit card company would allow it, I would dispute the charges. read more

COME BACK FOR MORE OR NO REFUND?! This is, apparently, the policy at the Headroom! Hair all messed up? Don't go to another salon, come back for a really uncomfortable and awkward appointment with the same person who clowned you up in the 1st place.... or no refund. So, in order to get a refund they have to mess up twice? The long story (if interested): I realize that all of the hairdressers at the headroom work independently and this is not a reflection of each individual. I've been bleaching my hair for decades. This was my 2nd visit to Headroom, where I had been told that my hair was too dark to bleach (although I just needed my roots done and toned) that my hair couldn't take a keratin/Brazilian blowout etc etc. Well, my hair definitely came up blonde, but now it was platinum next to my strawberry blonde ends. An ash toner was used to get out the brassiness. Long story short, when I got home I realized that I had paid $120 for A very blotchy orange and blue hairdo with uneven roots ranging from white to a kind of fluorescent orange (much like when I did it myself in middle school). My friends freaked out at my blue "leopard print" and orange hair and suggested I go to Douglas J. Heather and Lane at Douglas J. did a phenomenal job and did everything that I was (previously) told was impossible. My Hair has absolutely never looked this good! I decided to make A discrete complaint by FB private messaging the Headroom salon. I provided pictures and explained what happened. I was told that I would not get a refund before I went back to let the hairdresser at the Headroom "try to fix her mistake". OH HECK NO! That's like a restaurant giving you food poisoning and refusing to give you a refund unless you go back for another meal. No, thank you lol. I tried to explain that Douglas J had fixed everything and that the Headroom could not undo what has already been undone... they were unmoved. I advise people to be aware: if you go to the head room salon and end up with a terrible coiffure, you will have to go back for an awkward re-do and, possibly, if that one turns out equally terrible you may get your money back. read more

Selfishly, I almost don't want to write a review for The Head Room because I feel like I'm giving away a special, well-kept secret... but I know it would be a true crime to keep this stellar gem to myself. Walking into the salon feels miles away from typical Lansing. Exposed brick, metal ceilings, stylish equipment and lighting give the place an upscale but chill vibe and the desk staff were polite and down to earth. My stylist was David G., and after today's first visit I wish I could hire him to be my own personal hairman (and scalp masseuse - holy jeebus!). He really is the perfect example of what a stylist should aspire to be. I loved my experience: the breezy non-forced dialogue, his caring expertise and tips, and most importantly the outcome of my hair cut. Dare I say it was quite possibly the best hair cut of my life? I really think so.. My hair feels so healthy and full! The Head Room is exemplary. I very much highly recommend the salon and booking with David is a must! read more

I don't currently live in Lansing, but when I did I went to this salon. Friendly service at desk, clean and beautiful space. The stylists chairs give some privacy but you don't feel cut off from rest of salon. I used to go to Michaela and I highly recommend her. She does it all, color, cut, Brazilian blowouts. I really liked this place.... I went to David a couple times, the first time was great. The second time, $140 later, my hair looked the exact same from the last time, although I had asked and showed something different. The big issue I have with this place is every time you call they say so and so is booked 6-8 weeks out. I'm sorry, but coming from the Chicago area, it's pretty ridiculous it takes that long to get your clients in the schedule. I feel like they need to adjust the hours of their stylists/salon hours if they truly are always that "busy". To close at 7pm your clients who work all day pretty much have to rely on Saturday appointments if they require 2 hours or more to get their hair done (guilty, I have a lot of hair). And getting a Saturday appointment or apparently any after work hours one is next to impossible (eye roll). read more

I've been into this salon twice and saw Bailee both times. First time, she had to correct a previous cut for me. She did ok other than not layering the front of my hair very well. Negligible. Then I came in this last Saturday and requested a pixie cut. She didn't seem to have a very good technique for this type of cut and kept asking for my guidance, which I will usually accept. It looked fine when I left the salon, but the longer I looked at it in the car and in my bathroom at home, the more flaws I realized. The sides of my head are completely uneven and the blending technique is nonexistent. I'm going somewhere else to get this mess fixed. Never again will I set foot in this salon and pay $50 for a crappy haircut. Good riddance. You're lucky I don't call and ask for a full refund after the emotional damage you've given me and the hatred I feel every time I have to look at my hair. read more

Love this salon! Let me just say I started with Andrea doing color and Lesley the cut when they were both at Douglas j. I moved to Indianapolis and since I am a total hair snob ( I did try other stylists) I made the trek back to get it done in Lansing. I'm now in the Detroit area and still drive an hour to see Andrea. Remodeled about a month ago, looks high end and gorgeous. They carry Redken and Aveda products, no liters as of now. My girlfriend needed to get her haircut the Saturday before memorial day and David stayed late to help her out! Friendly and professional. He was the instructor for the beginner level class at Douglas J East Lansing before coming to The Head Room. Her haircut turned out fantastic. He sat her down, talked with her about what she wanted, gave her a oil scalp massage, then shampooed her hair, followed by the cut and styled it. All together $30. Love this salon! I went here after buying a Groupon for haircut with Mariah Horne. I really liked the look and the location of the salon. Mariah was professional and the staff, super helpful. Mariah did a great job. My hair was almost waist-length when I went in and I wanted to get it cut quite a bit. I showed Mariah a picture of the style I had in mind and she advised me on the length that would look good with my face cut. The Groupon included a conditioning treatment and it left my hair smelling amazing. Can't say if it made much of a difference texture wise because my hair is naturally pretty soft and untreated. All in all, I am definitely going back and making this my regular salon in Lansing. read more

I am not referring this about the salon in General, but I went to the Head room and I asked for a professional to do my hair when I called to make my appointment - as when you are not a regular you get place with the new girl ..... well even though the girl on the phone said Matlynn would do a wonderful job .... I thought I would give it a try ..... the girl that did my hair told me I was in good hands that she had been cutting hair for 3 years. ( that was after she took the first wack and the sick feeling in the pit of my stomach started) She looked barely out of high school...( and I realize they have to learn somewhere but in my life time my hair has been screwed up plenty and when I say professionial I mean professionial ......please I don't want to be the manicans head, when I left I was in tears it was uneven-horrible hair cut..... and I'm sure she could tell by the look on my face I was unhappy ...... being my birthday too. I couldn't even enjoy going out with my husband because he said, wow that's the worst cut you've ever gotten. I called and told them about my experience and they wanted to place me with someone else and I'm sure the other person is more experienced. But I'm gun shy at this point. I work in the public and my hair is the view point, of course ..... but com'om really messing someones hair up.... I wouldn't do it and couldn't do it - if it was me I would have had to be comfortable cutting the hair to the photo, that was placed in front of me ----- kept showing it to her - she over processed my hair made it way lighter than I wanted and that was in June..... and I'm still struggling trying to grow it out to get it straightened out........ I wish you could just walk out the door with out paying for a blotched job, because its not fair to be charged a high dollar for a mess, like I said the salon itself was very nice and friendly, that don't make my hair look any better- but my luck.... still 2 months out and I'm still working on it.......if you don't mind being the experiment then by all means...... and I don't say that in a mean way because some like to be out there. but I like even professional cuts...... if anyone knows of a good stylist that isn't afraid to say they cant do the cut please forward them to me... read more

April 15 2016 - Ashley no longer works here. I thought based on reviews this would be the place I might want to try. Having not been to a salon in a while and having long fine hair. Well I would have had to wait more then three weeks to get an appt so I guess they don't need new business. The person taking my call on the phone didn't seem interested at all at setting me up with an appointment and even when I said you don't seem to care about my business she was like "whatever". HUGE FAN!! The salon recently received a make-over from Ikea as part of a nationwide contest. Looks fun and fresh. The girls are terrific - so friendly and hip. Kendra, the salon owner, is my fav!! Prices for cuts and product are reasonable. Highly recommend!! Be sure to plan ahead with your appts. I typically schedule two or three at a time. They have a lot of loyal clients, but plan ahead and you won't be disappointed. Metered parking out front - 1 hour for a quarter!! Once you start asking friends and colleagues about where they get their hair cut, you'll likely be surprised how many go to The Head Room. Besides, Old Town Lansing is terrific. This was a place I did not know I was looking for but finally found!!! After purchasing a groupon with Andrea Loveless, I was little apprehensive of what I would be walking into. I am not from the area and had never heard of the The Head Room Salon. But to my suprise it was a great start to my day when I arrived at the salon bright and early (10am;) ) Andrea greeted me and offered me a beverage to start and then we headed to her chair. We chit chated and got right to it. After deciding on a plan of action, we began the transfermation! I was looking for someplace to have my hair done in Lansing for my son's wedding. Between their website and reviews on Yelp, I settled on The Head Room. About a month before, I made an appointment with Jamie for a "dry run." At that point, I think she'd only been with the salon a few weeks, but told me she'd taught for many years. Jamie listened to what I wanted, and I was totally satisfied with our first try. When I came back in a month later, she recognized me right away and remembered much of our previous conversation. She did a beautiful updo, and it felt completely secure throughout the evening. I never gave my hair a thought all night! Got lots of compliments on it, too. If I lived near Lansing, I'd definitely see Jamie on a regular basis! read more

In April I was a brand new client at The Head Room Salon. Pharra gave me a very good haircut, was pleasant and I scheduled another haircut for 5/24. I left my home at 10:35 to arrive for my 11:00 appointment. When I walked in I was told that Pharra was an hour and a half behind schedule due to her current client wanting more services than originally scheduled. I could come back at 12:45. I live nearby so I walked home thinking over this situation. I decided that, because I had an appointment for 11:00, the other client should have been told that she could have more services if she waited until AFTER my haircut. The person at the desk told me she had been trying to call me from 10:00 on but I only found one message on my answering machine placed at 10:45. I will not be going back to this salon because I think treating a client like this is inexcusable. I tipped Pharra $10 for my first haircut and would have been a happy, repeat customer if it weren't for this incident. Therefore, I can't recommend The Head Room Salon. read more

I travel a lot for my career as a young professional so I have to get haircuts/colours at various salons on my travels both in and outside the country. I looked up salons in the capitol city on my phone on my last trip to do business with the state and the HeadRoom came highly rated. I think either the other reviewers don't understand what good hair salons are like or just haven't experienced well trained stylists before because I was never more disappointed by the overall experience and quality of my service. I had to return to have it fixed and it still wasn't correct, and instead of wanting to make it right the girl decided my hair was the problem? Pretty insulting and unprofessional to blame the hair AFTER a colour. If you can't handle or don't know how to do a service, that's fine, just don't bs your way through it and then blame the customers hair?!? At the HeadRoom, the costumer isn't always right especially if something goes wrong and it's obvious there isn't a standard of quality or even a level of employee commitment to what is a highly regarded career as I see it in my travels to other countries. Sorry to be so rough but the employees at this place should really consider other careers or seek further education to actually master what they pretend to know. read more

The best thing about the place is the type of people who cut your hair. They make sure to do their best to meet your standards and to give you a satisfying finish. On top of that, they make you comfortable as hell because of how easy going and relatable they are. My spouse got me a groupon for a haircut by Lesley at the Head Room Salon in Lansing's Old Town area. I was apprehensive at first because I couldn't find any reviews on her online, but I'm always game for a new salon & hair stylist, so I wasn't too nervous. I'm the kind of client who would rather give decision-making authority to the stylist, so I gave her a general summary of my hair routine (not much at all), & let her do her thing. She gave me a symmetrical clean bob with bangs that I like very much. Beware of the clippers. I've had clippers done before on the back of the neck, but they irritated my skin a lot this time. I'll warn her next time. Lesley was very careful and deliberate about her work. It took her 1.5 hours to completed the cut, and she was super-friendly and knowledgeable about hair. She currently charges $32 for a cut, which is a steal compared to the $60+ haircut that I paid for at the Douglas J Salon at Okemos (though I liked that stylist a lot too). read more

THE HEAD ROOM! 5 plus stars! Had never been there, and turning 49 my daughter wanted to treat her mom to a cut, color of plum/burgundy hightlights, for my birthday! It was a very nice and much needed gift! She found The Head Room under reviews, being the best reviewed, and there happened to be an opening. From the minute we drove there, the location I love in the artsy part of Old North Town, the extra mile nice greeting from the gentlemen at the counter, from the clean and welcoming environment, and after having left many salons feeling worse than when you walked in, and broke with a bad style, I admit i was nervous. We were welcomed by my stylist Pharra, who patiently worked with what we were trying to express we wanted, as far as what my 19 year old wanted for me, and me not totally sure what I wanted. Lets just say that I left there today, with the best haircut I could ask for, and the burgundy wine high lights that are a work of art. My stylist went 10 extra miles for me, and without going into a long story, she deserves a extra tip and for me to write this review of the entire salon, including all the other stylists that were busy working on others hair that looked to me like 5 star cuts, high lights, brow waxings, plus. I will be back, and I walked in feeling not to good about being 49, left feeling and looking like what my daughter paid for, and also a few business cards for friends which with each friend you send, is a $10 discount off my next style! All I can say is thank you to my daughter, thank you to Pharra, and Thank you to The Head Room for being all you are rated for and then some.
