We have used Corteza Landscaping and Tree Service in the past to repair our sprinkler system and have always been extremely satisfied with their prompt response and high-quality work. When we decided to convert our front yard from a traditional grass lawn to a desert landscape, Corteza was the obvious choice. Ezequiel Martinez, the owner, worked closely with us throughout the entire process. He clearly explained each step, starting with removing the existing grass and approximately 4-6 inches of soil, followed by a two-week Roundup treatment to help minimize future weed growth. A commercial-grade weed barrier--far superior to anything available at big-box stores--was then installed for additional protection. Removing the excess soil allowed for proper backfilling with 3-4 inches of rock, which helps prevent damage to the weed barrier and brings the finished surface flush with the sidewalk. Ezequiel also made several thoughtful design recommendations that significantly improved the final result. The project took approximately three weeks from start to finish, and someone from Corteza was onsite every day making steady progress. The scope of work included converting the irrigation system to drip and installing hardwired low-voltage landscape lighting. These people did a Shit job at my home in south La Jolla / north PB Mt Soledad area. I'm sure I got the "La Jolla neighborhood" quote which means that they charged extra thinking I must have the money. They have a fancy truck and fancy logo which is deceiving because their work quality was terrible. They didn't do a complete job and charged me $2300. Don't let these jokers charge you a fixed bid. Make them quote time and materials. How much per hour per person. how many hours they work plus fees like dump fees etc. Get all their information up front so you can issue a 1099 and make sure they pay income taxes. I tried calling them and they don't return phone calls. They are from Temecula and were probably taking advantage of the neighborhood and never came back. Do not use them !!! read more

I've used Corteza for two significant projects now. Last year they built a brick and railroad tie walkway with steps down to the lower part of my back yard. This year they continued the walkway and refurbished some raised beds the walkway leads to. In the front yard they refurbished three beds with topsoil and pruning. For both projects they had quick availability and showed up when they said they would. I can't say enough good things about the workers who are all friendly, polite, and very hard working. None of them speak english so we relied on Google translate. They were working to my plans so we had a fair bit of interaction this way but it all worked out well. I spoke with Ezequiel and sent him a pic and agreed to a price and scope of work. Ivan and Pasquel arrived the next day, 20 minutes early. We communicated in Spanish. I wish I would have seen their yelp reviews before I hired this company. I hired for landscape maintenance. Their first visit they arrived early, before I could meet them at the property. I arrived at scheduled time, and they had already finished. Neither one of the 2 men on site spoke English. I discovered they had pulled out all of my california poppies that were just 2 weeks old. Every single one was pulled, as if they were a weed. It was obvious that it was seedlings coming up, which I had been propogated for the last 2 years, this would have been 3rd year of growth. I'm very sad to have lost these beauties for this growing season. This could have easily been avoided with guidance and care. When I informed Ezequiel of the issue, he made promises to take the plants out of the green waste bin and replant. That didn't happen, and he's ghosted me I texted him. read more

I found Corteza Landscaping and Tree Services while Ezequiel M., Lic#1093319, was working in my neighborhood. I asked if he was available to look at and quote me for job in Chula Vista, Ca. He agreed, but never should for the appointment we made. I called him 30 minutes after the stated appointment and he said he was too busy to make the past due appointment and asked if he could swing by my address to look at the job two hours later that day. I declined and told we'd have to reschedule for another day that week. He agreed, and never showed for that appointment. I tried calling him and his voicemail said his message recorder had not been set up. In other words, he was ghosting me. He didn't have the guts to answer his cell phone to respond to the missed appointment. I texted him to say that our potential business is concluded.... before it started. Business owners who fail to honor their word should not be in business at all, and anyone doing business with them run the risk of being scammed. REMEMBER, PUT IT IN WRITING..........BUT EVEN THAT MAY NOT BE ENOUGH! ONE IS ONLY AS GOOD AS THEIR WORD! I put in sod last October and had very nice green grass. Figured it was time to get it fertilized and irrigated as you should during the year to keep it looking good. Didn't shop around and figured how hard could it be to hire a company to do this so I choose Corteza. BIG MISTAKE! They came and over fertilized my grass causing it to burn all over! I also.asked them to reseed a part in the back which never took. A few days after they fertilized I noticed the grass was burning all over and getting worse by the day so I contacted them to come back out to do something. He came back out, refused to do anything and told me rabbits (yes rabbits) had been coming and urinating all over my lawn which cause it to burn. I never had any burn marks before they fertilized it and told him that it was insane and they should fix the damage they caused. He then tried to charge me another $120 to spray for these infamous "rabbits" and refused to do anything to fix the damage they caused. I fired him and contacted two other companies to come out and look at what Corteza landscaping had done. Both companies said he wayy over fertilized causing the grass to burn and laughed when I told them he said rabbits had done the damage. Now I have to pay another company to fix their damage. My grass is finally coming back after hiring this other company to fix Cortezas damage and guess what?!?!?! I don't have any burn marks from the "rabbits" which I never did before using him either.....strange. Also, after shopping around to get it fixed, I discovered Corteza was much more expensive then other companies to do this service (or should I say destroy my lawn). This company left a business card at my doorstep. We wanted new landscaping in front and back yards. Talked to Ezequiel and he told me he would come by the next day between 4:00-4:30. Next day came by and no show. I called him at 5:00 and he had no clue who I was. No apologies from him. Acted like it was no big deal. He told me he would call his brother to see if he was in the area and he could come by. I waited a few minutes like he told me to but he never called back. I called Ezequiel the next day just out of curiosity to see what he would say. Again he acted like it was no big deal. He said he could come by that afternoon. At that point it wasn't worth my time. We were very disappointed in Corteza Landscaping and would not recommend them. Called Ezequiel for a tree planting quote and he told us he had two guys in the area who could plant our trees that day. Gave us a window of 11-12 and nobody showed up, we weren't followed up with and had to reach out around 1pm asking if they were coming. At 2:30 they showed up, hurried through the job, planted one of our trees in the wrong spot and the other crooked. We'd asked in the beginning that the trees be staked and as they were leaving asked about staking again in which they didn't seem to understand the request or didn't want to stake our trees and left. We reached out to Ezequiel with a picture of the crooked tree and to tell him our trees were not staked and he apologized and said he'd send someone the next day. The next day got a text that says "price was for planting only, not staking"... basically we paid for two holes to be dug and for a planting job we could have done better ourselves.
