Our journey with the Ruff and Ready family began in 2024. We had wanted to put concrete in our backyard but unfortunately, our funds had to be diverted to replace our AC. Fast forward almost two years later, we were ready to put the concrete in our yard. When I contacted Ruff & Ready, they had our photos, previous quote, and hand written notes still in their portal. Best experience possible with Ruff and Ready! Beginning to end, Ruff & Ready gave my family a good price, a low-stress experience, and results better than we expected! We selected Ruff & Ready to do the biggest changes to our raw backyard, wanting to leave some parts for us to do on our own later planter boxes, slope, etc.). Our artificial turf required so many cuts and pieces, yet we can't the seams! The concrete looks great. My yard is sloped to favor the drains without looking for feeling like I'm walking on a ramp. The turf drains are also so well hidden. The results are literally better than we envisioned. We had a bad experience with a different company for a different home project, and we were scared going into this larger project. Update: After 4 months, several plants died due to the drip lines not being close enough to the root balls. I reached out to the owner to see if we could get it fixed, and he told us that it's because our sprinkler timer battery died and it was going without water. The problem with that theory is that none of the other plants died, just the ones that didn't have the drip lines close enough to the roots. There were also areas where the rock was not the 2 inch depth. When we did the walk-through, I did not get down on my knees and dig through the rock to make sure it was 2 inches thick everywhere and the drip lines were buried under rock. I'm 60 years old, and I don't get down on the ground. Lol. Originally I was really happy with the yard, but after his response to my request, I can't say that I can't fully recommend them, unless you 100% examine every detail on the final walkthrough. read more

We initially had our concrete patio done prior on our new build and had a really poor experience with the contractor. For the remainder of the backyard, our main focus while getting estimates was hiring a contractor that we felt had a strong sense of integrity. Jeff definitely stood out to us the most with his attention to detail, suggestions for working within our budget and the way he presented how he runs his company during our estimate. So... I finally have time to sit and update this review. It's been a couple of years since we had our backyard and over a year since our front yard. Our backyard experience was great. The front yard... not so much. Overall the front yard looks good, however, they didn't follow instructions when I told them I wanted rock rings around the tree. I just let it be because they already went past the point of putting the rings around the tree and I didn't want to prolong the process by having them do it over, we had a mulch area in our backyard switched out and concreted over and the concrete job isn't the best and they had to do it over because it wasn't looking right, after the second time, I was told I would be charged if they had to do it a third time which was weird seeing as though they weren't doing it right. They told me it wasn't coming out perfect because of the curb I had around the mulch area prior to them filling it in... like it was my fault or something.... They are the professionals and should've known what to expect and not put it on the customer if they can't do something right, and lastly the turf is pretty bad. I had never had turf installed before so I wasn't really sure how it was supposed to look until it was pointed out to me. The turf isn't properly tucked and it also looks like multiple pieces were used and it should be seamless but it isn't. I got my front yard done in July 2022 and to date no one has come to fix it after I reached out to Jeff and his foreman multiple times in the past and was told someone would come by and they just say f me and never came back to fix it. I just gave up and decided I wouldn't use the company anymore. We recently had our backyard grass removed and turf installed by another landscaping company. It looks fantastic and is how turf is supposed to look. It's one large piece and is seamless unlike what ruff and ready did to my front yard. I look at my neighbors front yard turf and see how nice theirs is and then there's my front yard turf. Makes me sad when I look at it. It's not the worst job, it's pretty secure, is isn't coming up or anything, just not aesthetically pleasing and we want the aesthetics when it comes to our homes. Lastly, I asked for a fruitless olive tree and guess what I got, olives everywhere, attracting big rats to my yard. Same for my plum tree. Reading more about the plum trees, I guess even some fruitless trees can produce plums but on top of asking for fruitless, I also asked for trees that don't shed leaves too much, and guess what? The plum tree sheds all its leaves every winter, backyard full of leaves that my son is allergic to (molding leaves), our other tree is fine, it barely sheds anything but I don't have a green thumb so I expected them to be the plant and tree experts. Some of my plants burned so bad in the sun and died, the same plants in the shaded area of the backyard are prospering so why did they install plants that couldn't stand direct sun? I just expected them to know what types of plants and trees would, idk, stay alive and thrive in this climate. Most of the plants survived and are thriving, the tequila plant and the aloe were made for this climate, maybe it should've been advised to put those types only? Idk just a thought. Jeff is extremely nice! I think he truly depends on his team to do their job and have his back but once his foreman Tony left, the new one that took over just couldn't hold a candle. I feel if Tony was there, or someone with the same work ethic, the front yard would've turned out better. The rocks they put were huge in such a small yard, it was pretty hard to say oh no I don't like those after they already installed them. I couldn't ask them to take all those rocks back but you'd think they'd look at it and be like meh that doesn't look right. I figured they were putting the same rocks that we have in the backyard but they put these huge flintstone rocks out there that I will be changing eventually when I have the time. This review is all over the place but anyways, that's my update. Overall good company but you just have to keep a good eye on the team and hold them to fixing issues if any occur. Overall there were minimal issues but the messed up turf that no one came to fix is just a constant annoyance every time I look at it! Sorry for any types ahead of time. read more

One of the biggest decisions that I have had to make recently was how to fix my front yard. It was a disaster: the previous owners of the house killed their lawn, slapped down a cheap weed barrier, and dropped less than an inch of rock to make a "xeriscape." Well, that xeriscape exploded with weeds during the first year that I was in the house, and we looked for folks in the landscaping industry to help us to make it better. Of all the people I dealt with, Jeff Ruff was easily the most thorough, honest, and reliable of the bunch. I need to tell you, Yelpers: there are some really shady characters in the landscaping industry. You need to be very cautious regarding who you consider as contractors and make sure that you are clear in what you need and what you contract. I mean it and have learned from some of my experiences. However, my experiences with Jeff and his company were very, very different. He was always on site at the agreed upon time, he consistently went through each part of the process with me in clear terms, and was fair and upfront about costs. He saved me time, energy, and money, and provided incredibly helpful advice on a number of issues, from irrigation standards to materials composition. Today we must care about the drought in California and do our part to save water. So I hired Ruff & Ready Landscape Construction to transform my front yard to a drought tolerant Landscape. Jeff Ruff listened to what I wanted and he is very knowledgeable about all plants and construction. I didn't want a lawn. I wanted a walkway up to my front door because I think walking up the driveway is unwelcoming. I wanted lights along the walkway and Jeff put spot lights showing off the trees and boulders. I wanted a water feature and thought a Waterfall going into a dry rock bed would be amazing so all those ideas went into the design. This front yard is unique, it's a WOW and I love it. No Showed It's very frustrating when these contractors no show their appointments. Since it's not the first time a contractor/tradesperson has no showed an appointment I don't think today was a one off situation. I honestly do no know how these contractors stay in business with these practices. My time is valuable too. The least you can do is call and cancel. I wouldn't hire a company who is indifferent to their potential customer's time. I would also like to add it took over a week for this company to respond to my request for a quote, so shame on me for trusting them to show up for the appointment, right? SMH. read more

"We'll never leave you hanging." Well, they left me hanging. $70,000 worth of grass, irrigation, and drainage problems. Don't waste your time or money on this company. Eight months later, I had to fix the water hammer they left me that sounded like was going to destroy all of my plumbing, drainage problems that they never fixed, and half of my grass that is dead due to soil problems, thanks to their very expensive "soil amendments." We reached out to these guys to get a quote for regular upkeep for our yards. Their responsiveness wasn't the quickest, but I can't say that it was bad. After they arrived, we walked the property with them to point out the trouble areas and they assured us they could take care of them. The biggest problem was a dirt mound from a gopher that likely wouldve left when regular maintenance started. But, they said they would knock down the dirt mound and drop some pellets at the entrance for the gopher hole (which is what we were ok with). We were really excited to work with these guys because of their awesome reviews and the fact that we needed their help to make the yard presentable again. However, we ended up not going with them for one single reason - their initial fee was over $800 and then another $170+/month. They did give us a discount on our biweekly rate for being a veteran, which brought it into the $160/month range (thank you, truly, for asking and offering that discount). The quotes we'd received from other companies had a $0 - $350 initial fee (depending on the company) and averaged about $120-$160/month. So, we asked Ruff and Ready if they could at least reduce the cost of their initial fee. They came down into the $700+ range, which I believe was still astronomically high in comparison. After that their responses seemed to trail off. I'm pretty bummed they couldn't come down into a reasonable cost for their initial fee, but over $800 to start yard service seems like price gouging, especially when other companies around us are charging $350 and under. Plus, losing someone who would be a long-term customer and willing to pay their (seemingly fair) monthly cost only because they appeared to be gouging us on the initial fee doesn't seem like a good business model. Then again, maybe there's a lot of people who pay it and it really is a good business model? I don't run a business so I can only go off of what seems like a better approach. Hopefully, other people will have a better experience, but this is how ours went. I gave 2 stars based on 3 being neutral and 1 being atrocious. read more

I cannot express how thankful we are to have had Jeff and his crew came out to re-landscape our front yard. Our front yard was pretty standard, looking shabby, and 15 years old -- infected grass (with weeds/shamrocks), old curbing, mulch, dead tree, overgrown bush, and lilies that had seen their last days. From our initial phone call/consultation with Jeff to completion of the project, the process and communication was outstanding. We literally had our new front yard done within a few days of receiving our quote. His team was beyond friendly, funny (Eric ha!), professional, and quick - like seriously quick! Jeff Ruff and the team are amazing! After installing a new pool I needed the rest of my backyard done and after receiving 2 much higher quotes I didn't think I could afford to do anything. Then Jeff came to my house, provided very sensible recommendations, asked what my budget was and gave me some options that would make my yard look great within my budget and I could do the rest in a second phase. I ended up pulling some extra money together and was able to do everything including: install new sod, irrigation, 30 privacy hedge trees on a drip system, river rock under the trees with a very nice concrete curb, palms to edge the pool, playground area with play mulch, moved a bunch of old retaining blocks to create a 50' planter on the side of the house and cleaned up a portion of the front yard that was scraped during pool construction, and added small retaining walls that the pool guys should have done. It was a lot of work and a big area and they finished everything in a little over a week. Jeff's crew was professional, very clean at the end of each day, and just a very nice bunch of guys. They even fixed my neighbor's sprinkler because they noticed it was also damaged by pool guys for no extra charge. My wife also noticed that the sprinklers didn't come on the day after they finished and Jeff came by himself shortly after I called him to adjust the timer. I will definitely use Ruff n Ready for my next landscape project and I'm seriously considering dumping my current gardner and hiring Ruff n Ready to do my regular yard maintenance as well. Nothing but great things to say about Ruff & Ready Landscape. I wish I would have found them first. Unfortunately, I hired a different company first for my project and I had so many issues (not to mention wasted money). I then was referred to Ruff & Ready by a neighbor and hired them to complete the project in hopes to have a better experience. They were awesome! They were able to start immediately even when I wasn't expecting them to. They built a very nice retaining wall matching the work already completed, removed the dirt from a large slope, did concrete work/steps, rock landscape, and planting/irrigation all within 2 weeks. They were very transparent with charges and performed what they said they would do. Showed up on time when they said they would be there. They came in with a crew of about 6 guys to knock out the job. They don't move to another job until one is complete. They don't take on a bunch of jobs at once and leave you waiting for yours to be finished. They also came back right away to fix something caused by the rain (no fault of their own). Jeff and Elmer were very easy to get in touch with when needed and came to the job themselves to check on the work and actually do some of the work themselves.
