Our 2-hour tour with Dave was the highlight of our week in the Outer Banks. We were renting a house in Corolla and drove to the end of the paved road a few times before deciding to book the tour. We didn't have a 4-wheel drive vehicle that could handle the sand/beach driving, so it was a tour or nothing. I'm so happy that our curiosity about what was out there got the best of us and we forked out the $45 for the trip. Because we were a large group (9 total) we had an entire Hummer to ourselves. Yay, family bonding time! Our tour time -- 6pm -- was PERFECT! The tide was rising, the temperatures were cooling down, and the horses were out in full force! We saw at least 10-15 horses including the baby that was just born on Mother's Day. I also loved exploring the neighborhoods that are tucked off the beach and their crazy network of sandy roads. Our driver, Dave, was knowledgeable and happy to share info on the area, including a really interesting story about German U-Boats trying to come ashore during WWII and how an infamous Enigma machine was recently recovered from some of the wreckage. Fascinating stuff! The company owns a beautiful piece of property called Penny Hill. We stopped for the sweeping views and a group photo. Dave told us they use the land for ATV and Kayak tours. If you don't have an off-roading vehicle, or want to go driving ATVs on an awesome course, this company will set you up for a great time. I did the ATV course and loved it. We drove around in the marsh, both on mud and in the water, and on a dune. It was fun and very exciting. During the tour, we spotted several wild horses in the distance and our guide led us very close to them, which was awesome. It was definitely worth it, although also overpriced. Although we saw wild horses, the ATV tour doesn't guarantee seeing any wild horses. You're only guaranteed to see them if you go on one of the other tours. If you own an off-roading vehicle, and don't want to do the ATV tour, the other tours aren't worth it. All they do, so that you see your guaranteed horses, are drive up the coastline past the "Corolla Beach Access 4x4" point (you can find it on google maps) and past residential homes where the horses hang around. If you own an off-roading vehicle, you can save yourself over two hundred dollars (the cost of the jeep tour) by just driving up the coast yourself. But the ATV tour was awesome and I have no regrets about doing it. We did the 6:00 tour, which was the best time to do it, because the sky lit up as the sun went down. read more

We did the 10:30 am tour on a Sunday. The weather was horrible, cold misty rain. Prior to loading up, our Driver introduced himself and made a few comments, in the waiting area, but didn't really provide any sort of overview of the Corolla outer banks areas, the horses or other animals in the area. Just said to relax and have a good time, basically. I'm not sure if it was because it was raining or not, but the vehicle we loaded into was a converted flat bed truck (quad cab) that had seats and a covering installed on the flatbed. So, we couldn't see or hear the driver, Jason. Jason was nice enough, but offered only very brief comments about the wildlife, the horses and the environment. My wife and I had our three kids with us, 2 ages 10 and a 12 year old and I was really hoping they would get an appreciation for the area and some knowledge about the horses. We received so very little information from the driver because 90% of the time he's in the cab driving. If they are going to use that set up, they need to hood up a little speaker or something so he can comment to the folks in the seats as he drives along. Jason did a good job in driving around to find us some horses to see (which were very few probably due to the bad weather), and was a nice guy, but overall a disappointing experience for the $$ involved. read more

They did refund our money but we wasted over two hours just to get to the shop to learn the truck was broke. We booked a tour two days ago, when we went in for our time, no one was wearing masks and they told us they just saw our reservation and their truck broke. We asked what we could do, they offered a horse tour which is not what we wanted and were very rude. They said we "slipped through the cracks" in the reservation system but while talking to others outside, it's seems as a lot of people "slip through the cracks." Truly a sad excuse for a business. We had an amazing time on our tour this morning. This was our first guided tour experience and we couldn't have asked for a better time. What made me decide to go with Corolla Jeep Adventures was the guy who answered the phone when we called to confirm pricing and availability--he was very friendly and offered us their group discount of $10 off per person for our group of 6 adults. It turns out each company charges about the same amount, but our tour guide, Marine John, really seemed to go above and beyond the call of duty. He really did a phenomenal job. He was passionate about his job and extremely knowledgeable about just about everything--from nature to the fighter jets that flew over. We also took a ride up the the second largest living sand dune, Penny's Hill and even saw a Harem (a small group of horses) there! The safari ride itself was bouncy and tons of fun all on its own. It was slated to last 2 hours, but took about 2.5. We saw lots of horses, egrets, a family of ospreys and dolphins. I can honestly say it was some of the best money we've spent while here on vacation. We all agree--and we wouldn't hesitate to come back. read more

I surprised my fiancé and booked an ATV tour with Corolla Jeep Adventures during our OBX vacation. As recommended, we arrived early and were greeted warmly. After filling out liability forms, we were introduced to our ATV instructor, John, who right away got us pumped for our adventure. The drive over to the ATV course/location does not happen on an ATV. Depending on the number of people participating you will likely ride in some sort of truck down the street and across the beach in Currituck. John is so much fun! During the ride to the course, he pointed out local landmarks and dropped some OBX knowledge on my fiancé and I. We were accompanied by two other staff people from the company (as they were riding over to the sound to prepare for their kayak course). They were also very friendly and knowledgeable. We enjoyed how laid back they were and got some great tips on other sites to visit during our trip. Though the company doesn't promise you will see wild horses on the ATV tour, we were very lucky to spot a group of horses on the beach on the way over. John was nice enough to give us lots of opportunities for good pictures. He's a wealth of knowledge and we thoroughly enjoyed his banter and historical factoids about the beach and the wild horse population in the OBX. Once we arrived at the course, John gave us a safety lesson on how to drive the ATV and what the course entails. This was especially helpful to my fiancé and I because we had never driven or rode on an ATV and we were both very nervous (LOL). He put at ease with his tips and told us we were going to have a blast. He was totally right! The first leg of the drive started out through the woodland canopy along the sound side of the Corolla beach. There was a thunderstorm the night before so we had to drive through a lot of puddles, but John made sure to give us pointers on how not to get splashed. We followed John in our ATV at a pace that my fiancé could keep up with until he got comfortable with the speed increases. John even slowed down often to give us lessons on the flora & fauna of the area and pointed out wildlife. Our favorite part of the drive included speeding around "Penny's Hill" - a huge sand dune with serious history. At the top, we enjoyed breathtaking views of the sound, marshes, and dunes. Overall - the ride lasts about two hours. If there are two participants, both are given the opportunity to drive. I was given the option to drive but I chickened out (lol). My fiancé was doing a great job, so I just enjoyed going along for the ride. In my opinion, this experience is totally worth every penny! I'm so glad we signed up for the ATV tour instead of the wild horse tour. John was the perfect instructor; very knowledgeable, hilarious, and a skilled driver. Doing the ATV tour is the ONLY way to go for booking the horse tours. We rented a 4 person ATV and it was a total blast. You can go off road where the big tour trucks can't go. We had Andy as our guide and he was good. It was so fascinating to learn about the native wildlife to the area. We were able to see 5 horses and they were stunning. Go at evening time and you will be there for sunset, the pics were incredible and it wasn't too hot. Bring protective eye wear if you have it, the sand kicks up in your face. The drive down the beach was such a cool experience in the military humvee. We would definitely do this again when we come back. read more

If I could give 0 stars, I would. I called on Tuesday to book a Jeep or ATV tour for my family of 4. We were told they had availability on Friday morning with 2 two-seater ATVs. (They no longer have any Jeeps even though the company name is Corolla JEEP Adventures.) We were really excited. We waited all week and got a call the morning of our tour that one of the ATVs broke down but they could put us all in one four-seater. So we made the half hour drive all the way up to Corolla only to be told when we arrived they were wrong and they didn't have any ATVs for us at all. Instead we could cram on to the Wild Horse Tour if we wanted. No thanks, I'd rather not give them any of my money. This business is run extremely poorly and obviously does not take care of their equipment. Take your money to a reputable company who values their customers and vehicles. read more

Let me say first, I fully endorse these guys for your Outerbanks vacation, we've used them twice now and have really enjoyed our experience both times. Today we headed up for our ATV tour, only to find out that unfortunately the trails we planned to use were flooded and not available. We were really bummed, as our beach house was 90 minutes away. But I'm pleased to tell you Kristin did right by us and set us up with a great Jeep tour which I think was likely better than what we had planned with the ATVs. Kristin was totally focused on making our experience outstanding and really went the extra mile to make sure we had a great experience. That leads me to the tour itself...and our outstanding tour guide named John. John is a riot and super knowledgeable about the area. He told us a ton of information I didn't know, he's really a great speaker so he keeps your interest throughout. We of course saw a bunch of wild horses, but we also saw probably two dozen dolphins off the coast and really just had a blast. So in summary, our planned tour could have been a disaster due to the unprecedented flooding in the area this week...but Kristin and John really made it a memorable day for our crew. This was an incredible one of a kind adventure that I have never experienced before, so naturally I was excited about going on this trip. The folks who did the registry were very friendly and informative when we inquired about coming the day before. They were very prompt when starting the tour and were enthusiastic (or at least did a good job acting that way) about showing our group the sights. We actually got lucky, as the tour guide did admit that since the animals are wild, their movements and locations are not always predictable. However, we saw several horses during the tour. I loved how informative our guide was and explained the history of how the horses got there as well as educating us about their environment. They would stop and pause to allow to take several photos of the horses before driving off to the next destination. We got a good view of the layout of the beaches and got a chance to see all the beach houses as well. It was a beautiful day with beautiful weather, and so our trip here was perfect. Definitely an experience any animal lover should embark on at some point. read more

Our tour guide was hilarious and I loved his sense of humor. He even spotted out cool things along the beach for us and gave it to us as souveniers...but... The actual tour was meh. This was for the horse tour, but we only saw like six horses in someone's front yard for probably two minutes out of the two hours. We also could not stop the jeep so the sighting was quickly over. Yes, we went on a day where it was raining, but then the place should have just given us a raincheck! There is no point in doing a horse tour if you are not really going to see horses. They should have called it a neighborhood/home tour. We got to see lots of cool beach houses and coasted along a beach, but it just wasn't what I expected. The day before, which was gorgeous had a tour that saw about 60 horses. In fact, two of the stallions battled thanks to mating season....so yes, go on a sunny day, but do not go on a rainy day. read more

Guests started wondering if local realtors were giving a kickback to the tour company. Guide was friendly but had very little interesting to say. Stopped at the horse tour nearest to the beach - sign said open 7 days a week, tours Saturday and Sunday.....it was Monday and closed. Who knows what they were doing. We had a 4x4, but decided to let them do the driving and let us do the sightseeing. The truck started out full, but 1 group left since it was full and didn't want to be so close during COVID. We sat in the back and got an awesome view of it all. Saw about 9 horses throughout the tour, all munching on grass around the homes. Drove by beautiful rental homes accessible only by 4x4 or ATVs and drove down by the waves. My girlfriend and I had a great time on the ATV tour. Our tour guide (sorry I can't remember his name, I think he might have been an Aussie? hah) did a great job driving us to the ATV area, explaining how they work and making sure no one got left behind. One of the girls working the front desk honored the coupon we had found that morning even though we had already paid so I really appreciated that. The ATVs felt powerful and had no problem going up and down some steep hills and through big puddles. I would highly recommend checking the glove compartment for goggles. Our ATV had 2 goggles in there and they saved our eyes from the sand which can blow hard while you're driving quickly on the dunes. Our tour guide got a call that there were horses on the way up to our location and we spotted them shortly after. We were able to get out and see them on foot. There were 3-4 horses wandering around munching on grass. We drove for a little while longer and then saw the horses again and our guide drove around them to give us a great angle for pictures. Our family went last year in mid March. The temps during the day were low to mid 60's. But the open air horse tour was FREEZING! Take coats AND wear the snow suits they give you! The tour was amazing and scenery was gorgeous. I've been on several Jeep tours in the Outer Banks and this was by far the best. It was a guided tour and our guide, Marine John, was entertaining, insightful, and excited to be taking us on a fun adventure. He had great instincts for finding horses and other wildlife and showed us many features of the environment we'd never seen before (like the great sand dune) and seemed to know the history behind everything. Hearing from him was one of the highlights of our vacation. It's nice to have a guide but also drive your own Jeep. Price was reasonable. Tour was scheduled for 2 hours but took about 2.5. read more

First off, if you're concerned about Covid, the lady at the checkin desk wasn't wearing a mask so stay away if you're concerned. Obviously she's exposing many people all day and not all guests inside the checkin area wore masks either so they weren't enforcing anything. First off, I feel terrible giving a place a review of 2 stars, but it's frustrating when you drive an hour to the place for a 2-3 hour tour guide and there isn't even a restroom available for the people taking the tour. We paid the extra money to rent 2 of our own jeeps and take the tour hoping it would be a more fun experience than the basic ride along package. But, we were loaded into our jeeps first and sat in the blazing sun for a half hour before we even moved as they loaded up the truck. Once we got moving it wasn't as miserable. It would have been better if we could listen to the tour guide explain about the area, horses, land, etc. but we basically just followed a guy giving a tour to the people in the truck. I get that you can't control horses and it's a hit or miss type of adventure but it was still very disappointing to only see 3 horses and feel like you are seeing more of houses in the area than horses. read more

The jeep tour to see the wild horses of the Outer Banks was great. We had scheduled a jeep ride and Kyak adventure but the wind was high and their advice was to skip that because the kids would have a difficult ride. We did the jeep/back of the 4x4 tour instead. You ride out in the truck, open air in bench seats, seat-belted in. At the end of the road the truck heads north on the beach, past other 4 wheel drive cars parked on the beach. (Maybe it's just me, but cars have no place on a beach. It's very Daytona redneck. ) The homes on this stretch only are accessible via 4x4 over sand roads. We wound our way through the "neighborhood" and saw the wild horses milling about. Most looked well fed and while the kids loved it, a horse is a horse is a horse. Wild or not, they eat grass and walk around. None of those romance novel covers with a wild horse running on the beach. But like I said the kids were thrilled. We saw some giant dunes and had a few photo ops and then hit the road back to town. It was completely as advertised and these guys did a great job. But don't expect an actual safari. read more

We had reserved a kayak/4x4 combo your for this morning. So we were a little bummed when the folks at Corolla Jeep called to say it was a bit too windy for kayaking. They offered to take us on a regular 4x4 your, try the kayak another day, or just refund our money. We decided to go the standard 4x4 Wild Horse Tour. So glad we did! Zach our tour guide was great! We went off road all the way up to see "downtown Carova" (which consists of a volunteer fire department and a place where you can apparently buy ice because I saw a guy come out with a bag). Other than that, you'll see a good assortment of the 1,000 or so houses that are accessible only by 4-wheel drive AND definitely some wild horses. We also saw dolphins, an osprey, and pelicans diving for fish. It was a great way to spend 2 hours with our family. Everyone from my 5 year old nephew to the adults really enjoyed it. Don't miss it. Also don't forget to tip. I'm not sure what the etiquette is but each of our families gave him $10. read more

Worst place in Corolla. The owner would not let us take my sons service dog because he made up some law. I tried to explain what the law really is and he got upset and ordered me to leave. Ended up calling the Sheriff Department on him. We ended up using another company that was fantastic. read more

We drove up from Duck for this tour. Check in was easy. We were all loaded up and the truck wouldn't start so they cancelled our tour on the spot. There were no available back up trucks or Jeep's to honor our tour and no availability same day. I would not recommend this company if you are looking for a reliable tour. read more

We had a coupon from our beach rental and went on an 8am tour in a Hummer out of here. John was our tour guide and I think we lucked out having him. He had plenty of personality and knowledge to make it an enjoyable tour. He seems to really care about the horses and their well being. Just the scenery rolling through Carova which requires a 4x4 was fun to experience. We saw over 20 horses during our time as John was good at tracking and knew other guides who were out and they shared tips. Do this! read more

My partner and I did the Guided ATV Tour from Corolla Jeep Adventures. Overall the experience was just OK and I feel that there were a lot of aspects of the tour not made known to us and a lot of mistakes made by this business in our delivery specifically. Too Long, Didn't Read: Not a true ATVing experience in the dunes, more akin to a children's ride. Experience is expensive. Less likely that other tours to see horses and other wildlife. Company itself is disorganized and messed up our reservation time. Would not recommend to others. 1) The ATV Tour consists of following their ATV guide along an existing ATV track that exists on a small-ish private plot of land within the dunes. Guests are expected to follow the guide exactly (i.e. in their tire tracks) and are forced to slow to the guides speed (which is not fast). There are a few small drops, bumps, and tight turns, but it is definitely made for beginners / new drivers. If you're expecting the chance to freely drive around in ATVs on the dunes this is not it, this experience is more like a children's ride at Disney Land. 2) The company says its around a 2 hour tour but we were out for only about an hour and 20 minutes. This length of time was fine once I realized what the tour actually consisted of, however, it does seem a bit misleading to have such a large time discrepancy. 3) The company messed up my original reservation time and only told us minutes before our originally scheduled time that we had to come back in two hours because they had overbooked the tour. We were able to make use of this time but it was definitely an inconvenience for which they gave my partner and I ~$11.60 dollars off the ~$171.60 price tag. Furthermore, when we did come back two hours later they informed us they had made a mistake the first time around and actually did not overbook, meaning that we could have gone at our originally planned time. This level of disorganization is really unfortunate for a small business as they lose revenue and customers by doing this and is totally avoidable. 4) If your main goal is to see the horses / wildlife, you're better off with one of the wild horse tours they, or another company, offer. I feel that they were better about communicating this aspect than the other issues I raised earlier but it should be known that seeing horses on the ATV tour is not the usual, although it does infrequently happen. We did not see any wild horses or other wildlife aside some tracks in the dunes during our tour. read more
