Trisha was a worthy and well versed guide for our afternoon of exploring the wild horses of Corolla, NC. She was most knowledgeable of the area and the history of the horses. I appreciated her persistence and patience in finding the wild horses for us to observe. Trisha would turn the vehicle around so we all could view the horses from either side of the truck you were sitting on. I think having all of the seats facing forward would make the viewing the horses more pleasant for all. Trish tried hard to speak loud enough from the truck's cab , as she was driving, for us to be able to hear her enlightening commentary, but much of her verbiage was lost to we sitting in the back of the truck. Our 2 hour tour started 15 minutes late. Our guide could only speak to our group when he pulled over and spoke to us wasting 1/4 of our tour. We saw only 2 horses. The drive home was extremely fast and bouncy where we felt very uncomfortable. The beach was beautiful and a slower ride would've enabled us to enjoy the view. read more

We went on a tour today to see the Spanish Wild Mustangs and it was amazing. We got to see so many of the horses and also learned a lot about the area as well as the animals. As a bonus we say a couple new areas that were marked off for sea turtle nests. Gator was our guide and he was the best. Enjoy our tour this morning with Emory, he knew the small neighborhood roads to find horses. We saw about 15-18, one group of 6, one being a foal. I'd give it a 5, but sitting sideways for 2 hrs was not total comfort, we were warned about the bumps, that was not the issue just straining your neck to look in different directions. Recommend they install all forward facing benches in their trucks, not only is it more comfortable but is easier to view right and left. read more

Incredible adventure! Our tour guide Gator was great! We saw about 40 wild horses and took a beautiful cruise up and down Corolla Beach, and Gator was sure to stop/slow each and every time we saw horses. Made two stops: the first being on the beach to get out and snap pictures of a group of 6 horses that were wading in the water, the second was at a park where Gator offered anyone who needed to use the restroom to do so. Ride was a bit bumpy but the seats were comfortable and Two hours round trip and definitely worth the price of admission! read more

Overall: A great, fun option for a tour of the Corolla area! The good: Easy check-in and plenty of parking when you arrive (you can park anywhere in the lot). Our guide was great (forgot his name); friendly, informative, loud (which is good), and made the drive a fun one. The area itself is great to drive around in, with plenty of scenery, houses, and horses to look at. Bumpy at times too, in a good way. The not-so-good: We apparently came during the wrong time of day (10AM), but the majority of the horses we saw were not energetic and hardly moved at all (not the tour's fault). Our experience was not like the pictures of horses on the beach or running around that you may see (again, not the tour's fault). read more

The tour was good and tour guide Stu was very informative. We did not see a lot of horses but what we saw were amazing. The ride back on the beach was very bumpy and we were lifted out of our seats several times rather violently and for some reason our driver drove on the wrong side of the beach making oncoming traffic dodge us like we were playing chicken. This tour was so fun. My family has been coming down to OBX for 15 years and never took a wild horse tour until today. I wish we had done it sooner. Our tour guide Justin was not only knowledgeable about the area and horses, but he made the tour so enjoyable with his charm and great sense of humor. The drive out is bumpy but once you get onto the sandy paths by the houses and horses it becomes a little more smooth. Bring water and snacks for the ride AND A HAT! And we were excited to see some wild horses so we went with this company based on the reviews! Nathan was our tour guide and he was absolutely amazing. He was so informative about the whole outer banks and we really did learn a lot. We saw probably 15 horses on our two hour tour with him and he made every effort to stop as soon as he saw them or when we would point them out. He also stopped to show us sea creatures and other items he spotted on the sand just to tell us about them. We took the 9AM kayaking tour with Brooke and had a blast! There were only 5 of us in our group, which made it fun and more personable. The tour started from their shop where we loaded into the back of the tour truck. Each seat was a bucket seat with a seatbelt and a tarp was hung overtop to provide shade. Brooke navigated us down the beach and through the various neighborhoods. We ended up seeing about 25 horses total. We reached our kayaking location and headed out through the canals and the sound for a comfortably paced trip. We saw several osprey and could float next to the large wetland area where there was a variety of cool vegetation. On the trip to the kayaking launch point and the return trip to the shop, we saw pelicans and dolphins. Brooke was very knowledgeable of the local flora and fauna and a great tour guide all around. My wife and I decided to go on the kayak tour on a Friday afternoon with absolutely perfect weather. Luckily, we ended up being the only two on the trip which certainly led to a great excursion. Price was right at $80/person + tip. Our tour guide was friendly, knowledgeable and sincere. He went with his normal script and was more than happy to engage in regular conversations and answered all of our questions. He genuinely seemed happy to be there and made sure we had a good time. About 1-1.5 hours was spent in a double kayak which was fine for us as we've used them before and could manage ourselves. If you were in a larger group or inexperienced this could get frustrating at times. Luckily we saw all forms of wildlife including the horses on the trip. Took about 3 hours which was the perfect amount of time and I more than felt we got our money's worth. read more

A little difficult to find, but well worth the trip! My family and two other families got our own "personal" tour with Bruce, who was extremely knowledgeable about the area, horses, land, and was able to answer all our questions. Although he probably has given this tour thousands of times, he did not seem like he was bored and was genuinely interested in giving us the best tour he could. He also does the Segway, and kayak tours, too. We had a chance that ours would get rained out, but we took the gamble and still went on our way. Good thing - only a little spritz of rain which wasn't bad at all! The rest of the trip we got to see numerous horses including one of the foals, a pod of dolphins in the ocean on the way back at the end of the tour, tried some wild blackberries and blueberries, and as an added bonus an unexpected car fire on the beach complete with fire truck! Best tip of the day - drop your air tire pressure to about 1/2 required to "glide" over the sand and you'll have a much easier time getting through. Another tip - wear a hat and sunglasses. Bruce gave us an awesome experience for our first time at the Outer Banks, and I'd highly recommend Back Country Safari Tours. $150 for 2 adults/2 kids including a 5% discount since we had a large group. read more

First let me say I will be posting pictures later...no laptop to upload from my camera but trust me - this will be posted here and also printed to be put up on walls at both work and home. We had Nathan as our driver and he was great! I have been to the Outer Banks many times and it was just awesome talking to him about now and what it was like here for the last 39 years. He also engaged with my little guy which made him really come out of his shell. He took us not only to find the horses but also along the way where it was the closest to a sand rollercoaster, past Santa's summer getaway (Liam is still trying to figure out if he is on the good list for not bugging him on vacation), and a local celebrity in the Monster Truck Circuit. We wrapped up with a quick drive by the Corolla Village. He also took several pics that look amazing on my playback on my camera. The ride was fun to say the least. I tend to rule some items like this as a "been there, done that" but my family and I enjoyed this trip so much that I have already referred it to friends AND we are looking at making it a standard on future vacations! We have already started figuring out when we can make it back, and it has made such an impact that we are looking at doing a fall visit and staying in the northern part of the Outer Banks! We had a large enough group that we had the truck to ourselves! the benches were comfortable but seatbelts loosened easily so you'd want to sit close to the little ones. They are the closest tour to the 4x4 beach so don't have as long a ride on the main road which is nice! Our guide was local and knowledgeable and made our tour a lot of fun! read more

We did an 8 am tour, and left on time with our guide Tommy aka "Gator." We had 5 adults and 3 kids (age 3, 6 & 8) and had the truck to ourselves. We packed a small cooler with drinks and some snacks for the kids. It was about a 5 minute drive to get from the office to the beach. We drove down the beach (thankful for 4 wheel drive!) and saw a group of horses with a foal after about 10 minutes. We were able to get out to take a picture (at a safe distance from the horses). Gator took us through some of the neighborhoods and we saw some horses on the roads and in yards. About an hour in, there were bathrooms (very clean!) to stop at. We took a quick break and some horses gathered around the truck and bathroom for us to see up close. We kept our distance and got back on the truck after they moved away. Driving on the beach on the way back, we saw some dolphins swimming and a lot of pelicans flying close to the shore. We also saw two more group of horses with young foals. 37 horses total were spotted. This tour was well worth the money, our guide was fantastic, and we saw a lot of horses. It was 2 hours exactly from start to finish. The kids enjoyed the tour and it kept their attention. We are so glad we went with this company. If we come back to the OBX we would definitely do this tour again! read more

Definitely a must-see if you're in Corolla! And take your dramamine if you have a weak stomach because it's like a 2hr roller coaster ride when you're moving! There are lots of tour groups to work with but this one was great. I got a little nervous about the whole COVID thing when they grouped us with another family but we were easily distanced apart in the back of the truck. Gary was very knowledgeable about the area and the horses, and we saw several on our tour. The trip on the 4x4 beach alone is worth the money as it is incredibly beautiful and serene and much safer than trying to drive out there yourself! read more

Took the 330 tour with Tommy aka Gator. It was in the mid-50s and was cold out. I went along with my wife and two sons. The total trip ended up being about 1 hour and 45 minutes-20 in, 20 back and an hour looking for the horses. With the weather and time of year-Tommy mentioned we may see three horses. We ended up seeing 5. A lot of fun. Very very cold. We were dressed in long everything and were cold. Other family was in shorts-they were very cold. Check in was smooth. A bunch of trucks ended up going out. read more
