A horse laying down in water at the end of a hot day
    Michaela B.

My family and I had a wonderful time at Corolla Wild Horse Tours! There were about 8-10 horses visible on our We had the 1:00pm slot and so we thought it would be too hot but it was wonderful because the roof is a solid blue that fully protects from the sun on top. No need to be overly concerned about sunscreen unless sitting on the end! The tour guide was very informed about the horses and the history of the area. It was a fun real estate tour as well! The vehicle was in excellent condition and would do it again in a heartbeat!

We had so much fun! Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable. We saw 8 horses total, and learned not only about them, but also about the history of the island. Definitely keep your seat belt buckled, and don't wear a hat unless you can secure it under your chin. If you're prone to motion sickness you may want to take a Dramamine prior to the tour.

Excellent tour and staff would highly recommend doing this while visiting the Outer Banks. Knowledgeable Team found us 30+ horses roaming free and hanging around people homes for shade. Very informative and interactive Tour, Kudos to our Tour Guide Clint!

Our guide, Horace, was excellent- informative and funny, and we saw several groups of wild horses on the trip. Would definitely recommend!

All other factors being equal, if you're trying to decide between tours and respect the values most small businesses uphold, I'd put this tour company at the bottom of the list. We made a reservation for 12:30 pm then called back ten minutes later to move it to 10:00 am because my husband had a client call. Woman on the phone reassured my husband that would be moved to the 10am tour. Upon arrival we discovered that someone had dropped the ball. The person at the counter (Julia- doing the best she could given that she wasn't responsible for the screw up) acknowledged that another employee- a new hire- had failed to take the steps to confirm the change. The only concession was a full refund. We were two families with four kids (ages 2-5) in tow and now had to choose between crestfallen kids or hours in limbo. Then I asked to speak to the owner- Wendy White- who was on the phone with her employee. Not only was this woman unapologetic, she was hostile. I started by recognizing mistakes happen but saddled with four toddlers, the 2.5 hours was more than an inconvenience. It also meant my husband, who had a work call that afternoon, wouldn't be able to make the tour. Her response was to blame us. "It was on you to call back when we didn't email you." I was incredulous and then she said, "You can go on this tour or you can take the refund. Either way, I WILL fill those seats." Not wanting to disappoint the kids, we waited it out and went on the 12:30 tour. The majority of it is through rows of beach houses with a wild horse few and far between- we spotted two in front yards and one along the beachfront. On a sunny day, the open air ride is nice. But the owner is not.

If you're interested in seeing the wild horses of Corolla this is the tour company you want to go with. Very friendly service from reservations to tour guides. You'll ride along in a covered vehicle (great to keep out the sun!) along the Corolla beach which is cool enough, but as you go through the area you'll spot the beautiful horses. Of the 100 or so remaining in the area we ended up spotting roughly 20. We had a great time!

We took a 2:00 tour today, I've been on three with another tour group so I wasn't sure how this would compare. Difference in vehicles is most obvious, pickup truck with bench seats on both sides of the bed of the truck with a canopy overtop, and no conversation unless stopped, verses wide hummer with 4 rows of horizontal seating and driver can easily discuss. I have to say I prefer the other tour for seating and discussion, however we had a great tour with Edna. Great driver and very knowledgeable, we captured some beautiful shots of the horses on the beach. Kudos to Edna for a great tour and history lesson.

Great tour! Our guide was really knowledgeable and fun. He stopped the truck occasionally to get out and tell us about the horses and their history. It was fun driving on the beach. He also knew all of the horses names, and knew where to find them. When he found them, he'd also turn the truck around, so that each side of people could see the horses. That was really nice because sometimes it was hard to see over peoples heads and cameras. The whole tour was two hours long.

Booked a tour for our group of 10 and requested Horace, based on a referral we received from a group of ladies eating lunch next to us at Corolla Village Bbq. What a great suggestion they had! We planned on going on a horse tour but didn't have a clue which service to use, as we've heard good and bad reviews. We did the 5pm tour. The woman who helped us with our reservation told us to pack sweatshirts and we could have a soft cooler with beer, pop, etc. The open air 4x4 starts on the street, then to the dunes. It's pretty bumpy and windy. Horace was so knowledge and wanted to share history with us & welcomed our questions. We saw about 30-35 horses...the tour was worth every penny! Riding in the dunes was fun and seeing how people live in this preserve was enlightening. We all got a little wind burn, but at the same time, this tour was the highlight of our trip!

Had a lot of fun seeing the beautiful wild horses, froze my ass off but it was a great experience!

Corolla wild horse tours did not disappoint! We did something similar last year and this time around was awesome as well. We were so lucky to actually find most of the horses on the beach and super close up. They are so beautiful it was breathtaking. Ned was our guide and he was really great! Super knowledgeable about everything, very passionate about the horses (which I loved) and a great story teller! We had a private tour which I would definitely recommend as you can spread out and really enjoy the ride. Ask for Ned if you go!

Craig our tour ride was fabulous!! A lot of knowledge about the towns out there in the communities it was awesome. He took us where the horses were at it was absolutely amazing. He also knew a lot about the historical stuff that's in the area. Now the bad stuff LOL we went on the 330 tour it was absolutely freezing I was so grateful I had a windbreaker in the car. My suggestion make sure you take more instead of less. It's very very rough riding on the beach and the corners. There was a couple times I think all of us on there we're airborne LOL. Now I know why they say no one under 40 pounds or four years old. It's definitely an adult ride in the back of the truck. Craig asked me to do an honest review so that's what I'm doing. Overall it was an amazing trip we had an amazing time. The morning after we hurt everywhere

On the beach with the mustangs!

Disappointing. Horses found in the backyards of residents. Dont expect prancing on the beach. Rough bumpy trip through estates.

Ask the Community - Corolla Wild Horse Tours

Can we bring a miniature poodle on the tour with us?

I wouldn't think so...not sure it would be safe. Everyone has to be belted in, there's alot of bumping up and down driving over the dunes and on the beach.

We laughed so much, saw the most beautiful horses, learned about the horses and Corolla in general, and even saw some bald eagles!! If you're looking for a fun way to tour the beach, definitely book a tour! Plus, this group is actually working on protecting the horses!!! Some of the money from these tours go towards preserving land and caring for the horses (but only if absolutely needed, as we learned! For the most part, the horses are left completely alone unless it's life or death). A couple things for parents with young kids: The car seats fit perfectly, no issues at all. And they are able to see everything from their car seat!

Never did I imagine that I'd get to see the horses living/roaming amongst the houses of Corolla Beach. I had no clue a community could exist like this and without going on the tour I never would have believed it. Geoff, our guide, was great and informative. He took us all around to make sure we could see horses. He told us all about how they're cared for and tracked (but not really tracked). It's amazing that there's so much involved to make sure the wild horses are treated well. There's a mutual respect between the horses and people. I fell in love with the community on Corolla beach and will be back to stay and watch the horses roam free. Definitely take a tour- it's so well worth it!

There are 75-100 wild horses on the sand dunes. The open air truck carries about twelve people. We wore seat belts because the trucks rolling in the sand gets very bumpy. We hopped in the modified Ford F-250 with outdoor seating and drive to the beach. Immediately we passed two wild Spanish Mustangs taking a stroll down the beach. Then we must have seen 40 more throughout the tour. We all loved it - it was more than just looking at horses, the drive down the sandy beach in the tour truck was an adventure in itself. Many of the horses were in the yards of the beach houses. The guests and residents here know the horses are the true land owners and the people are the ones permitted to be there :). FYI - it is a two hour tour. Half way through they stop at a park for a bathroom break and a leg stretch. We also brought a cooler with food and drinks.
