I went on a Friday and the special on Friday's is Soul Food! I got the chicken with gravy and mac n cheese and yams. I believe all of the soul food dishes come with cornbread. Food is delicious! This cafe is a hidden gem of Oakland. It has outgoing youth producing high quality tasty dishes at excellent prices. I am surprised that its been kept a secret for so long. I love the fact that they don't serve any pork products and offer so many options - substitutions are no issue at this cafe! I also love the daily specials - under $5 for a basic breakfast - eggs, toast and turkey sausage patties? Yes its totally possible. A hot lunch for under $10? - yes - the world has turned on its head - I had the Lasagna special - a generous portion of lasagna with mixed greens salad and a piece of garlic bread - beautiful to look at and even better to eat. They even have extended the hours they are open till 4pm, serving till 3:45pm on everyday except Wednesday when they are open till 6pm. I also love the fact that when I spend money at this cafe I am helping sustain my local community and helping empower the local youth. Good Deeds can taste good. This place is out of control!!! We had the chicken and waffles -- extremely generous portion and the flavors were off the hook!! 6-8 wings/drummettes a waffle with fresh strawberries and brown sugar butter. I wish they were open every day because we are just here the weekend but I will make a point to get back here! LaLa was extremely hospitable and the staff was very friendly. With flat screen monitors wrapping 2 walls and wireless service you can grab a cafe, juice, sandwich or meal and surf online. The emphasis is on fresh and tasty made by overachieving, pleasant teenagers from East Oakland. The food is surprisingly good, healthy and geared for a teenager's purse so you are sure to get a good deal. This have it your way type of generation will allow you to add or substitute just about anything on the menu. The fries are killer. Not gon lie, it took them forever to make it and the girl on the phone didn't know what came on their sandwiches... other than that though, the sandwich was actually good! If I knew that they would take less time to make it (Only lunch period to get it and get back to work) then I would for sure be back! Food 4 stars, but time management takes it down to 3. read more

Visited this spot during my visit from Southern California. I googled the nearest eatery that I could walk to while my host was at work. I walked the five minutes not really sure what to expect but i was pleasantly surprised at what i found. I walked in to a nice warm welcome and immediately noticed a determined team leader teaching a group of teenagers skills to succeed. The young lady at the counter was very professional and pleasant. She even answered a couple a questions I had about the neighboring school and community. While preparing my coffee the Trainer came to further describe the goals and objectives of the program and welcomed me to the community. After placing my order and receiving my food, I felt comfortable and safe enough to find a seat in the dining area and enjoy my sandwich. It was delicious!!! Great flavor, nice balance, and good portions. And the plus is that all of the young men preparing my food wore fresh gloves with every order!!! Five stars all the way around. This place was better then most Francised Restaurants that I frequent. read more

Believe the hype, this spot has so much love and hard work behind it. Delightfully warm staff that went above and beyond, fresh and amazing food. Kevin came out to chat with us at length and all I could think about is how I want to work with these guys. This is a special place that we will be visiting as often as possible. Red Bay Drip coffee is excellent; roasted locally. Great wifi, not crowded. I hear the food is excellent too, although I haven't tried that yet. Definitely will be doing so soon. Great coffee, and I really can't get over how great the mission of this place is. A hopeless area for youngsters without access to education, equity, justice, or visibility; the cafe aims to give them something that will hopefully lead to less perpetuation of suffering in these regards. Found this place on Yelp, they seem to do a great service to the community youth. Got a turkey burger which had excellent seasoning and fries - everything tasted really good and I enjoyed. One small (or not so small) complaint - would be nice if the people wore gloves while preparing the food. Especially since the young lady who made my food told her friend she was sick with a cold. And if not going to wear gloves at least wash their hands with soap (not just rinse them under the water as I saw the young man do) before food prep. read more

This is a great place to eat! Run by young people, it had really good food at very reasonable prices. We went for breakfast: I had a veggie omelette with toast ($6.50) which was just yummy....excellent choice of veggies and a good size. Toast was very good whole grain bread. My husband had their "2x2x2" with bacon (2 eggs, 2 pieces bacon and 2 pieces of toast and some home fries). He liked his too...with coffee and tea, the total was $18.75 before tax and tip....if we lived in the area we'd be back!!! It is only open Monday through Friday, though, probably because of the tie to the program that sponsors it and maybe the school next door. read more
