The place has a sign claiming to be the home of "The worlds best hamburger" had us intrigued, so we stopped to verify the claim.

In all honesty, I wasnt sure what a "Bum Boat", refered to and we both were plesently suprised on the friendly people, cheap drink prices and relaxing ambiance on the Astubula harbor.

Well one time the late great Maritime Mel said to my brother come on tommy let's get a drink, and walks onboard. MEL! U can't just go on somebody's boat.... ITS A BAR. Christmas lights were up. The Capt was onboard from the laker. This changes everything, a floating bar for the lakers!!!! This was back in the day early 90's. Well. It was on. Sonny II aka the bum boat, used yo shuttle supplies to the lakers all along the harbor. And was a bar for the mens & ladies while alongside. A great seafaring tradition. Sonny B the sister ship is the water taxi up at PIB. Well for many years now at Ashtabula harbor the bum boat is tied up & open to the public fully licensed sit down bar. The owners are really nice. Live music, have a drink. Fairly large menu board too. I didn't know they had food tbh. It was great chili dog. As good & very similar to skyline. If u love shipping, history, music & dranks, and who doesn't in Ashtabula harbor, get ur arse down to the bum boat & have a blast. It's so unique u will never drink in another place like it. circa 1930. BEAUTIFUL NEW SIGN check it out. 5 star dive bar!!

However, the last three times I have made it to this establishment, the bartender complains how many years she's been there and how miserable she is. She is not friendly. I tolerate her because I'm happy to be with my friends and the food is decent. Last night. After driving over an hour to get there. We arrived at 7 PM. We sat down at a booth and the woman bartender stared at me for almost 5 minutes. Never came over to ask what we wanted. Just glaring at us, and I didn't understand. Maybe she didn't want to serve us? Maybe it's a rule that you have to get up and ask for your drinks and menu at the bar? But when you're in a booth. I would imagine it's customary for the bartender to come over and ask what you want. Especially since there were only maybe five customers at the bar. It was a little embarrassing because I brought my brother for his first time. After waiting her out and figuring she wasn't going to come over, I got up and ordered our drinks and asked for a menu. She said the drive-through was closed. I didn't know what that meant. Apparently the "kitchen" was is closed. At 7 PM on a Saturday night. Wing night? $$$$ Oh well. We went to another bar and were treated very well. Our waitress was wonderful and I gave her a great tip. Too bad for a rude girl! We will not go back now. After all these years. I can't take it anymore.

Off the top maybe 5-6 tables and a bar that holds 10-12 people if I was guessing. Multiple TVs playing all sports. Keno, Jukebox also available. Nice neighborhood bar. Staff were very friendly even though they were busy. As for the food, I ordered mozzarella sticks, a hot Italian sub with tater tots. The cheese sticks were bad. Tiny, lukewarm and not much flavoring. Marinara dipping sauce was bland as well. Now for the sub. Unreal Italian Sub. The tots were crispy and salted. The sub was AMAZING... repeat AMAZING. Served with Italian dressing, on a toasted roll. Banana peppers, onion, tomato, with multiple meats and cheeses. Definitely a bar favorite as I saw many people eating the same dish. It's worth a visit or a try if you're in the area. The big positive of this place was the prices. $2.50 a beer and $10 for that sub. My tab was low so that's always a good thing. I would go back to this place however it might be tough sometimes if the bar gets pizza. In the plaza it sits next to a pizza place that I was told you can order the pizza from the bar and they have a window to slide the food through. I didn't try the pizza so I won't review that place. Overall, a 7.1 out of 10 with everything included.
