The food has not been as good as the years prior. I was invited to lunch and I was quickly reminded why I stopped going here. The bar was filled with people waiting for to go orders that took almost an hour to fulfill. The people dining in were waiting for 30+minutes, including myself, as a table of two. When people were questioning and complaining (not us), they were reassured the food was in progress and they did not know the hold up. Lack of ownership throughout the entire dining experience. They did not serve me sweet potato muffins, for what is now my fourth visit in a row. They ultimately took it off the check-- obviously. But for the fourth time now, I have not received these so called muffins I'm unsure even exist. XD. For our appetizer we ordered Firecracker shrimp, Fried green tomatoes, and Sweet potato muffins. We also had the complimentary corn bread. The appetizers and sweet potatoes muffins were delicious. The cornbread was dense and okay. For our main course we ordered turkey chops, and they came with two sides. We chose mac and cheese and red beans and rice. The turkey chops were ok but the sides were trash. The red beans and rice were (see picture) dry and the macaroni and cheese (see pictures) as well. The mac and cheese was cheeseless.We also ordered the catfish dinner with okra and yams.The yams were delicious and the okra was okay. The catfish skin was dark like old oil was used. It appeared to be cornmeal fried and hard. I should have specified how I wanted them. We also order the waffle and the chickens and there were no complaints. Honestly, we've been to Cornbread many times. Previously, I've always given 5 stars and haven't ever had any complaints but something drastically changed. We've been trying to get back here for years, and it's just as good as I remember from two decades ago. Service couldn't be any better, with friendly smiles from attentive staff. My husband deems their potato salad the best he's had in his life. The catfish fingers are phenomenal--perfectly coated and crispy on the outside, yet tender and scrumptious on the inside. Collard greens remind me of childhood, and Cornbread knows how to make them well. I went with an old friend for lunch and after reviewing the menu, we went with the following: - Louisiana Gumbo - Bayou Combo with fried catfish with collard greens and green beans - salmon croquettes The gumbo was decent, too salty, however their gumbo was a lot better than other MI joints. I had the bayou combo, which is worth it as it allows you to try multiple dishes. The cat fish was bit over fried, rib tips were decent and the wings was not bad. We ordered Togo lunch specials (forgot to get photos) of the rib tips and smothered pork chops. Rib tips were just how I like them. The bbq sauce was good too. Carryout is usually good. Service needs to tighten up. Specifically the weekday manager. I placed a carryout order waited over the estimated time of 30 mins to pick up the order. Arrived at the restaurant which was empty on a Thursday afternoon, only 2 tables of guest, and they had not printed out the ticket to give the kitchen. So an additional 20 mins of waiting on top of the 30 mins. No apologies from the manager Cecil. Just a you can wait at the bar. Got my order and IT WAS WRONG. Called the manager and she offered me to come back up there to wait some more. No thanks, horrible customer service. After supporting them at least once a week, I'll definitely start visiting other options in the area i.e. Joe Louis and Lillie Mae's. I'm good. Overall the restrooms and were super clean. There is ample parking around the establishment and outdoor seating. The tables honor historical figures throughout history. Great services. My first time here! Came and was able to grab a a seat right At the bar and happy hour was going on, our bartender was a sweetie and gave us great recommendations on what to order. I was able to get the firecracker shrimp and down home wings for $5 each along with a $5 grape kool aid martini. My food came with a side of cornbread. The cornbread was moist, warm and sweet, top tier for real. I was afraid my martini was going to be bright purple but it was a pretty lavender and def tasted like grape koolaid. The shrimp were good but suuuuupwr spicy, the heat overwhelmed the flavor. I think the shrimp themselves could have used a sprinkle of seasoning, however when I ate the other two of three shrimp they weren't that spicy. The wings were three whole wings, which I appreciate in this "wingding world", and were seasoned and fried to perfection. I recently returned to this restaurant in their newer location, and had a completely different experience. I loved all of the historical photos that are part of the decor, and all of the staff were very friendly. My mom and I ordered the chicken and waffle, catfish and grits with sides of hush puppies and sweet potato fries. Everything was delicious! The waffle was light and fluffy, and the chicken tenders were crispy and well seasoned. The catfish was also seasoned very well, and the fry on the sweet potatoes was perfect. My husband and I came here about a month ago and loved the food--it felt like having Sunday dinner at Auntie's or Grandma's house. We came back recently because everything was so delicious the first time, and the second visit was just as good. The cook is wonderfully consistent with the flavors, and that means a lot. The only downside is that the dressing is only served on Sundays, which was disappointing because it was amazing! But other than that, no complaints at all. We went, on a Friday, for the 5-7pm week day happy hour. The happy hour menu was small but there was something on there for both of us. From that menu we shared the Harlem burrito. From the regular menu we got the Mac and cheese, red beans and rice, fried okra and green beans. Everything was delicious. I was scared to get the burrito but it was the best thing I ate. The fried okra was fried HARD so it was hot af and never cooled down. On to the drinks I had the grape Kool aide and he had the mango margarita. Both were absolutely delicious. Service was fast. Excellent first time visit. I started with the gumbo, followed by the catfish with mac & cheese and collard greens. The gumbo was very good with a dark roux which I prefer. I then followed that with some excellent catfish and some fantastic mac & cheese and greens. I love that they have hot sauce at the center of each table too, as it should be.
