The food is good, parking is provided, good seating but service can be slow but it's all good. There is adequate sitting outside as well in the fall ans summer. The service can be a bit slow which is probably due to the orders received. read more

If you are looking for soul food the way your southern family prepared it than this is not the place for you. But if you want tasty soul food cuisine prepared with a twist, than you will enjoy the food. We sat in the Maplewood restaurant and enjoyed our food. We watched many folks order take-out to go while a few others decided they wanted to eat in. The server was friendly and free parking is in the back. It is a very casual place. read more

First time here. But this is a take out review. I see the reviews are a hit or miss with this place. So I had to try it for myself. And it's a miss today for me. The pieces they given don't come close to the prices they asking. I'm shocked they even packing such pieces. I got 2 piece fried and 2 piece baked chicken. Side was yams and Mac and cheese. The greens got there because I watched her place in bag. But I never asked for it. So when I asked if she put yams in the bag. She said yes. Then looked in the bag to see she didn't. But the extra side did not help this review. The yams was the best thing of every thing. The greens had no flavor. The Mac and cheese. I can't say nothing good about. The fried chicken was bland and the baked chicken was not cooked through. Red at bone. They are known for the Cornbread hint it's name. It was not the best.. Just ok I'll give it. Did I mention the $2 sweet was not fresh tea. It really taste like instant tea. Stopping for this today was a waste of time. I would not even give them a second chance. So disappointed. read more

Wondrrful southern fried chicken, amazing side dishes--each one better than the next. I enjoyed sitting upstairs on the outside balcony. Easy, free parking in tear with a convenient rear entrance. Owners are a very friendly family and are right there making sure everything is perfect! read more

When I sat in I noticed that I got more food than I have when I ordered two times prior. Generally when I've ordered the catfish to go it was only one piece and when I sat in there were two. ( which is sometimes normal in restaurants) Now sitting in was great the place was clean and the crowd was good. On the balcony it was awesome the weather was good it was a great ambience. Now sitting in it was a little weird because you pay prior to eating so there's no way to add a tip on to the receipt. I thought it was cafeteria style but we did have someone bring our food to us. He was so sweet but it was awkward at the end when he came back to clear our tables because we didn't have cash to tip him. Also we didn't see anyone else tip at any of the tables around us so we were kind of confused. Customer service wise the waiter was so sweet. Everyone is friendly as always. The food this time was my least favorite. The catfish was drowned in red hot sauce and fried. It was soggy on the inside and didn't taste right. Compared to the other times where they seasoned it with spices which tasted way better. The Mac and cheese was dry like it had been sitting for a long time. The candied yams were not sweet. It wasn't terrible but not my favorite plate from here. 3 stars for the ambience .. cleanliness and service... read more

My boyfriend ordered takeout for us at this restaurant so not 100% sure what the inside of the restaurant looks like but the food was good! The collards were too salty though so I was not able to finish that but everything else was good. We ordered ribs, yams rice, fried chicken, whiting, collard greens and Mac and cheese. Of course cornbread was included too which was nice and moist. Everything was good but I would not order the collards again. Definitely give it a try! read more

I come here often Food is always consistent with great taste. Slightly Pricey but with this economy I can not complain as long as the food is great. The Owner I believe gave me a free refill in my lemonade so I have no issues with the service. The overall aesthetic of the place is calm and relaxing you can enjoy your food without any disruptions. read more

Omfg....so first off let me say I am so very disappointed . The food had no soul no southern seasoning the lemonade had no lemon to the ade sugar water. Fast service I must say. Chicken was blah bland. Ribs missing the basic salt and pepper. Planning on coming here please abort mission read more

This place looks likes a diner in the south. I love it. Food is clean southern comfort food. The catfish & fried chicken is amazing and so is the cornbread. The sides are good too. It's a very limited drink selection. Don't like the sweet tea or twang(taste like tang). Better drinks would get that 5star. The Service was very polite and easy going. read more

The cornbread is some of the best I have ever had! The mac&cheese was so cheesy and down home authentic. Potato salad, baked chicken, fried chicken all were excellent. Can't wait to go back!! This is a definite recommend read more

WOW, just WOW! I cannot sit on this review! This place is EXCELLENT! PURE excellence! I am sitting here eating while writing my review. The food is PERFECT! I ordered the Turkey Wing platter with 2 sides and cornbread and a Southern Twang drink to wash it all down! I think I found my favorite Mac, perfect flavor, not nauseatingly cheesy, just right...remind you of Auntie during the holidays. Cornbread stuffing was hot and moist nice and sage-y. Cornbread is DELICIOUS OMG!, turkey wings perfectly seasoned but a little too wet for me, but that's just ME lol! I have had this place bookmarked for quite some time and I'm glad that I have ventured out here. Service was friendly and served with pleasantries. Def a spot to put into rotation! What a GEM! Oh and it's VERY CLEAN, a PLUS in my book!! Love this place! read more

The place looks very nice, with a modern Southern decor feel to it. I placed my order at the Kiosk, which was very user friendly. I ordered the large whiting combo with mac & cheese and collard greens, and a side of cornbread of course. Still waiting on my order. Everything is made fresh to order, which is definitely something that will bring me back. It can get a bit crowded if you're waiting for your order on the benches in the lobby. Fortunately, there's more room upstairs to sit as well as across from the order counter. They should definitely keep the restroom doors closed! Update: Finally got my food after waiting close to 30 minutes for cornbread to be baked. If you're going to name your restaurant 'Cornbread' at least have an increased batch of cornbread consistently baked and prepared for customers, especially on the busy days. Also, make sure the cornbread is appeasing to the eye, not burnt! See pics. read more

Cornbread - Ordered take out and waited 30 minutes for burnt cornbread from a restaurant named 'Cornbread'. Disappointing to say the least. - Soul Food Near Me - Maplewood, New Jersey

Terrible service at Maplewood locations. Not good value for the money. Orders consistently late.

Food was delicious but order was extremely late. Went at my pickup time and had to wait 30-40 minutes. There was a lot of confusion behind the counter. A guy behind the counter was very apologetic once he realized I was waiting for a while and he got the order together. Offered myself and my son free fountain drinks. Was disappointed when I got home and was missing an item we ordered. I should have checked the order before leaving. Bottom line - food is delicious if they can figure out the service aspect my rating would be higher. read more

The Boston Market of soul food! I loved the touch to order screens, friendly staff, and clean casual setting. Black-owned too. The food was really good! I had the catfish with sweet potatoes and baked Mac and cheese. The catfish was fried but not greasy and everything was flavorful without being over the top on the salt. The beverages were tasty too. I tried the Southern Twang--don't ask the staff what is in it because it's a "secret recipe" but it was basically a sweet orange drink with sweet tea and it hit the spot. My husband had oxtails with collard greens and Mac and cheese. He doesn't usually eat other people's greens but he killed the greens at this place. And considering they have "cornbread" in the name, they made sure to live up to it! The cornbread was moist, sweet, and really i wish I had ordered some extra. The only issue with coming on a weekend was the limited seating. There is additional seating outside (very limited) and more seating up upstairs. But when we went the outside seats were all taken and the upstairs was closed for an event, which made seating limited and awkward. We almost had to settle on taking our food to go but with some patience we were able to dine in. The touch screen ordering made everything really easy and by the time we found seating our food was ready. My advice? Come hungry so you have room to enjoy yourself. This place is a gem and they need to bring another location closer to Jersey City! read more

That above 3.8 rating was unnecessary. Because of how good the chicken and waffles and macaroni was. Surprisingly affordable as well. Cornbread - Fried chicken, Maceroni/cheese,cabbage and scrumptious corn bread! - Soul Food Near Me - Maplewood, New Jersey

Soul food has flavor. This is not soul food. Therefore it can't be classified as upscale soul food. How does a soul food restaurant make fried chicken with not a stitch of seasoning on it. Mac and cheese???? Disgusting. Greens - again no seasoning!!! Deplorable. read more

Cornbread just opened and Crown Heights, Prospect Heights...whatever we are calling that area nowadays has real southern fried fish!!! I just stopped by on my way home from my Prospect park walk. I ordered the catfish, collars greens and yams. It's enough for two people! I split it with my brother and we were both satisfied. The service and food was great. There will be se imperfect moments because they just opened but I had a great experienced. The dining room is very nice with a southern country decor. I wil definitely return soon. My only suggestion or request is they offer more veggie or salad options. If you are looking for a nice reasonably priced restaurant outting for the family, they can accommodate you with their seating options. read more

This place is impeccably organized like serving kitchen. I visited on a Friday night around 8pm. Without direction it was easy to identify. They ran out of the smoked wings which was unfortunate. THE BAD: There's nothing more classic than fried chicken on a soul food menu and nothing more disappointing when the fried chicken doesn't deliver. The chicken was bland and tasted as if it was cooked in old grease. I couldn't even finish eating it. I'm surprised the chicken didn't grow wings and fly off the play because the preparation was so disrespectful. The Mac and cheese was just aight' and I do mean aight'. THE GOOD GOOD: Everybody say it with me: Order the catfish. Thank me later. The greens were absolutely amazing. The yams were sweetened to perfection. But oh my, that cornbread was sent from heaven and fitted for a King. Y'all about cornbread sweet as cake. Baby, if ever I go back to this establishment just give me about 5 cornbread slices and I will be in hog heaven. read more

Cornbread is a decent spot for soul food I've been twice and both times I've enjoyed my meal. The food was fresh on both occasions. The killer is the parking lot in the back is extremely small maybe 7 or 8 spaces. Street parking is limited too. Despite this I plan on returning. read more

Cornbread - Cornbread, mac and cheese, collard greens and catfish - Soul Food Near Me - Maplewood, New Jersey

Came for a friend's birthday. The food was fantastic in my opinion.. especially the cabbage, Mac n cheese, and of course the cornbread! They were very accommodating to all of our needs and overall friendly. We were there on a Thursday night and there was live music with an open mic. A few from our party went up to sing but it was mostly members of the band's group it seemed, which makes stepping up as an amateur a bit intimidating. I enjoyed just listening to the music though. One note for the live music.. it's definitely too loud to have conversations with your group, so don't go if that's what you're looking to do (unless you sit outside). Definitely recommend for a chill meal and good music though. The MC was very pleasant and colorful and made everyone feel welcome. Recommend stopping by any day of the week! I heard there's a parking lot, but I didn't see it. We had no issues finding very close street parking, so not an issue. read more

Really cute modern place in Maplewood. Wasn't expecting it to be buffet style. Came in with my cousin ordered to go. I ordered the fish with rice & mac n cheese. The rice was trash not even going to lie it was hard and not even seasoned. Fish was good. Mac n cheese wasn't made by a a person with high amounts of melanin and it shows. Cornbread was on point. Would visit again bummed when I found out is wasn't black owned . read more

First time visiting this restaurant and I will not be back..the employees park in the 1 and only handicapped parking space, which I could not use for my handicapped mother, I was given old sweet tea that tasted sour, I asked to exchange it and when the employee tasted it herself she noticed the bad taste as well so she gave me a new batch of tea. My mom ordered the fish and it was doubled fried and not good.. we could not use the hot sauce on the table because it was dirty and gook was all over it and we didn't want to put that on our food.. we had overall bad experience. read more

The best part is I didn't finish my food so I saved it for the next day. When I tell you I'm not a fan of chicken breast I'm not a fan. The turkey wings are well seasoned but not as crisp as I'd like, but I still very much enjoy the moist meat from the wings not dry hence why the wings aren't too crisp. I love that we can eat out in their balcony, I'm an outdoor lover. You don't get a spectacular view but just being able to sit outdoors is nice.
