The catfish was pretty good (although I prefer my fried fish extra crispy) but overall it was good (not too salty or under-seasoned)... black eyed peas were so good. My boyfriend & I found our way to Cornbread in Maplewood this past Saturday by chance. We were in West Orange & simply googled "Food near me". After skimming through some of the other results, Cornbread popped up. We skimmed their simple menu on their website & decided to give it a shot. I am SO glad we did. The building itself was adorable, well kept, spacious & well lit (thanks to all the windows). Plenty of parking behind the building so you don't have to fight for street parking. The real surprise happened once we stepped inside. We were immediately greeted by Cornbread's team which was warm, welcoming, and immediately made me feel as if I've been there before & they were welcoming back an old pal. You place your order on your own at their kiosk while the team works behind the bar to get the orders ready. We placed our order & took a seat across from their prep area - there's a handful of tables. As we waited for our food, we realized there was an upstairs but decided to wait until our food was ready & we would carry it up so we could hear them yell my name when the plates were ready (we assumed). If Cornbread's team does one thing perfectly, it is HOSPITALITY. When our food was ready, we saw one of the team members carry it out. We met him by the steps (since that's the way we were going) & offered to take the plates from him. He refused & made sure that we were comfortably seated & served us our meals. A kind gesture that many other establishments would have missed - others simply would have handed off the trays & went back to work. I wish I had gotten his name so I could mention it in my review - but he checked on us a handful of times, referred to me by name (from my order ticket) & refilled our drinks twice. It really made the difference, we felt like old friends. The team REALLY makes sure to go above & beyond to make sure you have a comfortable experience while you're dining. Customer service done right!! Now - onto the main event: the food. I had the ribs, rice w/turkey gravy and mac & cheese. My boyfriend had roasted chicken with mac & cheese and collard greens. Each plate came with a piece of cornbread as well. As you can imagine, a place named Cornbread definitely does cornbread right. Portions were more than generous & everything was delicious. I had some left over & took it home for later. Thank you, Cornbread, for making my first soul food experience a positive one. The only downfall (which is not their fault) is that they are TOO FAR from my house. Poor quality and customer service. I ordered two meals through Uber eats. I received no cornbread with the meals, even though the menu states they come with cornbread. The name of the restaurant is CORNBREAD, so I don't understand how you forget that. I ordered a 4 piece chicken meal which is meant to be breast, thigh, wing, and drumstick. Instead I received a wing, a drumstick, and two dried up thighs, one with no fried coating. When I told the restaurant, they basically told me too bad: They said they ran out of chicken breasts and they would not replace the cornbread because it is considered a "free" item. Now to the food. The wings while large are completely bland. The chicken tasted how it looked: dry, old, and flavorless. The yams, mushy and flavorless. The only things saving these meals were the Mac and cheese and the collard greens. The turkey gravy was good, but they only give you a ketchup cup's worth. I love cornbread. They're fish is always well seasoned and you get thick pieces. I also recommend the catfish. The Mac is cheesy and the top has a nice bake if your lucky to get that piece. The space inside was INCREDIBLY clean, organized and well stocked. Waking in for the first time, the staff was welcoming and answered the couple questions I had. They have a digital ordering system which was fun. I ended up ordering the large catfish, Mac and cheese and collards with (obviously) the cornbread on the side. It was not comfortable Staff assisted me to tell me that I could either order from a person or I could use the computer kiosk to order my food I saw that there is a lunch special which sounded like a good deal . Otherwise you will spend at least $15-25 bucks for your basic meal I tried the catfish which was good. I also ordered Mac and cheese and collard greens . I did not like the Mac and cheese- had a processed cheese taste to me . Collard greens were ok . Also came with cornbread on the side. I liked it. Some of the items are a farm to table - nice for them to display that on the wall. I also liked the wall photos-had a Miles photo.
