This place is scrumptious! Only got takeout but I've heard good things about the live music when dining in. The portion sizes are pretty generous. They definitely don't skimp here. I got a small fried chicken platter with mac&cheese and cornbread. Chicken was seasoned to perfection and I'm a pretty tough critic when it comes to chicken. You can taste the flavor all in it and it's nice and juicy. I came later in the evening too which can be risky at certain places that you'll end up with some dried out chicken that's been sitting out but not here. Mac and cheese is exquisitely cheesy with the nice crisp top like I like it. And the cornbread had me wishing I ordered more to snack on for the next day. Customer service was top notch as well even though they were busy. It's a must to stop by here when in North Jersey! read more

Any day of the week u can count on this spot to deliver a quality meal with quality service. Trudy to be specific and the nice gentleman who took my order made my dine In experience great. The food is 10/10 and you gotta try the homemade tartar sauce with their whiting fish. I definitely recommend and i am a top critic of food read more

the food here is amazing every time I come. the staff are very friendly. I would highly recommend.

Excited to try this place, arrived about 8pm on a Friday night very hungry. The place was full of people waiting for their to-go food and seemed busy. The food looked great! It was our first time so we didn't quite know the routine so we kinda just stood at the counter. There were no customers at the counter and 3 employees behind the counter. The employees ignored us. There were no menus - the large TV menus were OFF and they didn't seem surprised. I asked if there were menus and they said no. I realized they were just ignoring us, not making eye contact and not taking our order. I felt uneasy and suddenly didn't feel good about this place - we slowly walked to the exit and left. Very strange. read more

Food is okay here. I prefer the one downtown Newark because they keep things up to date especially when it comes to their website. Ordered food 5/19 but when I went to pick up they told me they were all out of stock of what I ordered even though it wasn't shown that stock was low on their website until I checked later on. I didn't want to substitute for something else or just get the sides, so I told the woman who I assumed was the owner or manager at register to cancel the entire order to which she assured me she would but I was still charged full amount for food I didn't receive. Currently disputing with my bank and I def won't be back. read more

It's been awhile since I've had catfish. But man... this catfish did not disappoint. So good! The green beans, collards and cornbread were also delicious. My least favorite side that I tried were the yams. My family actually enjoyed the food so much we came back the next day lol. This time I tried the Whiting. Still very good, but the catfish is still my favorite. read more

I just left and that plate was delicious!! I had the catfish, collard greens and yams w cornbread of course... u get 2 pieces of catfish but they are a decent size ... the yams make u wanna compare yo mamas ... and the cornbread... the staff and service are Also very nice read more

Cornbread is Amazing! I definitely give them 5 stars! From the service to food was great! Food portions are very filling and packed with flavor! I love the kiosk that they have as well, where you are able to order your food and pay and you can walk to your table and the servers being the food to you. You can also order your meal with the cashier. I ordered the Catfish and my two sides were mac and cheese and sweet yams and of course cornbread! I went with my friends it was was incredible we would recommend this place to others and would come back again! If you are looking for home cooked southern cuisine, cornbread is the place to go! read more

Went for the first time today with the family! Everyone loved it. The price is worth it for all the food you get. My meal was the cat fish with collard greens and macaroni. It was so crispy and delicious and comes with two large (and I mean LARGE) fillets of cat fish. Everyone was super full. And do not go there without trying the UPTOWN DRINK!!! Sooooooo good. It's a lemonade/sweet tea mix. I loved it. I could drink 4 of them. My family got the turkey wings meal ( was pretty good. It's a dry rub. The wings were super fatty but if you like that, then you might like it ) my sister got the fried chicken. If you get the large meal it is so much chicken. Basically half a whole chicken all for one. The other two dishes are the cat fish. My mother got the grits which I didn't get to try. But if I had to recommend some side dishes I'd go for the Mac and cheese and candied yams! The peach cobbler was really sweet and was probably canned peaches. Wasn't the best. I also wouldn't recommend the collard greens, personally it's too bland for my taste. But everything else was amazing. Can't wait to go back and try the oxtail and the side of rice. DONT FORGET THE UPTOWN DRINK!!!!! Also the atmosphere is great! I bet it would be super nice at night too. I hear there are jazz nights. We sat upstairs in the balcony. It was a beautiful day with not a lot of customers so the customer service was great and the atmosphere was relaxing and quiet. Got such great pictures because of the natural lighting. Right when you walk in everyone greats you and you place your orders at a kiosk. The workers were very eager to help us place our order. Ps. We went on a Saturday around 1 pm if that helps! It was quiet at that time--busy downstairs, but not too many people seated upstairs. If you get the chance I'd recommend sitting on the balcony on a nice day! Makes the experience way nicer Also I hear the portions aren't that big when u get takeout so I'd recommend dining in. read more

I love this restaurant but my meal today completely missed the mark. My collard greens are scorched. You can taste it through and through. One fork full and I threw them in the trash. My catfish was undercooked. Slightly cold in the middle. I ate the breading and the edges of the fish and threw the rest away. Even the cornbread was dry. The potato salad was excellent. I have been eating here for well over a year now and the quality of food has gone downhill. Needless to say, I will not be going back for a while. I hope Cornbred of Newark can get it together. Also, the music is way too loud in the dining area. read more

I honestly don't write good reviews but oh.my.god. Y'all deserve this good gem here! Let me first say that I have never stepped foot into this restaurant. I was just hungry and wanted catfish and ordered from DoorDash. Saw the dishes and the sides offered and figure what's it gonna hurt? I don't know what hot firey stove from hell y'all cook your food on because I live 20-25 minutes away and when my doordash driver arrived, my catfish was PIPING HOT. I had to stop holding it after a while or else my fingers would burn. A+ for the hot temperature delivery. This food is served with generous portions. I was thinking about saving the other half for tomorrow but, as you see in the photo, I'm slowly but surely devouring the whole entire thing. The catfish isn't super crispy which I love because other places cook it to a point where you can bite into it like a hard cookie. Idk maybe other people like that texture with their fried fish but not me. I preferably like mine griddled but the way they lightly fried it was amazing! It was still soft yet flaky and crispy. The Mac and cheese was of course delicious as well no complaints there. The candied yams..... girl..... if you're ordering a large entree with the two side option, you better make the yams one of the sides hands down. BANGING. It wouldn't be called cornbread if their cornbread wasn't popping and it sure is delicious. Like I said, I've never stepped foot into this restaurant as I only experienced the food first hand through doordash but now I owe it to this place to visit them in person because they knocked my socks off with the flavors in the comfort of my home. I can't wait to be wowed at the restaurant. 10/10 rating hands down. read more

Nice little spot. You are able to eat upstairs, and it is spaced out. The food here is pretty good, but wasn't a fan of the yams. There were a things on the menu that wasn't available. There food is so good. This is my second time going there I went today and enjoyed the honey chicken, black eye peas and cornbread. My husband had the turkey wings, cabbage, potato salad black eye peas and cornbread . And he enjoyed his meal. I give them 10 Stars.Yhe service was superb and the ambiance was really nice and friendly. I will be back. read more

Certainly worth the stop. I was looking for BBQ, but the places I drove by were closed due to the snow, but I'm so glad that I ended up at Cornbread. I tried the fried catfish, collard green, mac & cheese and, of course, cornbread. The catfish was fried and seasoned so well - light, tender and good quality. Don't forget the homemade tarter sauce and hot sauce! The collard greens were seasoned perfectly (some of the best I've ever had) with a little heat to them. The mac & cheese was a little dry, but still worthy of entering my mouth. The cornbread was good as well - buttery and didn't crumble. It was also a nice way to balance out the meal. Definitely get the large combo - it's worth the extra few dollars. The staff was very friendly and attentive which made me give them 5 stars over 4. read more

Can't complain. Considering it's a chain restaurant, the food is pretty decent. I had the catfish combo with collard greens, candied yams and cornbread. The one combo is enough to satisfy 2 people. The catfish had a crispy well seasoned coating and was nice and flaky inside. The collards were tender, well seasoned with a little heat. The candied yams appear to be from a can, not sure but either way had a perfect level of sweetness. Finally the cornbread was buttery and sweet. If you prefer a more salty cornbread, this is not it. It's closer to a slice of cake. I definitely recommend. read more

Came here on valentines day. I came here 1 year ago and decided to stop here before going on my date. This place hired more people which is a good thing. They took away the family meal option and only have a la carte or small/large combos which are up to 18$. Thats pretty expensive. For 2 people we ordered 2 large chicken combos, 2 drinks, and a side or whiting fish, for around 55$. The food was ok, nothing special than the last time. Today they were having a jazz performance that would be held upstairs, so upstairs was closed off until then. All in all, still an ok place. read more

Excellent food, totally hit the spot! Will be back. The fried chicken and potato salad were great

This was my first time using Uber eats to place an order. Everything was good with the exception of the turkey wings were tough. I was disappointed. The collards were salty. The Mac& cheese and the sweet potatoes were good. The slice of cornbread was as hard as a brick. read more

Cornbread is the cutest little place! Upon walking in I was a bit confused. There were two screens for customers to place their order and an employee standing next to one to help customers as well. The screens are also next to where all the food is so I was confused whether to stand on the line for the screens or where you see the food. I stood on the line where the screens were, ordered my food and was still confused. I didn't know if we had to stand and wait there or if we could grab a seat and have the food come to us. I think they should make this more clear for first timers. After waiting, we realized that we could've sat upstairs and an employee will bring your food. So tip, if dining in you can either sit downstairs (kinda small and crowded on weekends/later hours) or sit upstairs. My boyfriend was afraid the food wouldn't be enough to fill him but he couldn't even finish his plate! The portions were great and the fried fish? AMAZING. I couldn't move after that meal. I got cornbread, fried fish, mac and cheese and yams. I would say pros: good portions, flavorful food, a lot of choices, nice decorations, friendly employees. Cons: downstairs area is confusing, needs better direction. read more

I was going to my old standby KB's in Irvington, but they were closed for the holiday weekend. Not sure where to go next, I drove right by Cornbread and realized I'd never seen it before. Sight unseen, Yelp unread, I went in and subjected my family to: * Fried chicken: No. Good flavor but very dry, sitting out a long time. Far better chicken down the block at Jersey Fried. * Fried catfish: Lord yes. Every day should be Friday for this fish. It was moist and juicy, full of flavor, delicious corn breading, plentiful portion. Get three large fried fish meals and you'll still want more. * Cornbread: Every bit as good as the catfish. It's not a regular side, but you can add two for $1.99. I suggest you add twenty. * Collard greens: One of my yardsticks at any soul food place, and they nail it here. Vinegary but not bitter at all, cooked well. * Potato salad: Not one of my yardsticks, but quite good. Includes bell peppers for brightness. Made with egg mayo for yellowness. * Mac and cheese: I saw someone complained about it in the reviews. What did you order? This is my mom's baked mac and cheese. Homemade, wonderful stuff. I'd gladly order it again. * Maine Root on tap! Service was a bit strange with COVID - they kept my card in the machine by accident and were clearly VERY busy with Doordash type pickup orders. Still, everything we got was correct and all but the chicken was so good. The 5th star is there for the taking and I'll come back to see if I just hit them on a bad chicken day. read more

Cornbread - I ordered the Catfish with yams and Mac n cheese. Very tasty! - Soul Food Near Me - Maplewood, New Jersey

This is a cute place. Plentiful seating both up and downstairs and a parking lot so no issue with parking. You definitely get a lot of food for your money, but the food itself is not that great. Although it is a soul food restaurant I truly didn't feel any soul in the food. It was all good, but not cooked to perfection, flavorful or anything. I ordered the Turkey wings, black eyed peas with white rice and cabbage. Everything was OKAY and that's it. The Turkey wings were not smothered in any type of gravy and was a little dry, the rice was ... rice and the cabbage was seasoned in an interesting way. I'd return if I were in the neighborhood and just didn't care to eat fast food, but it is definitely nothing I'd travel for. read more

I came here after church with my family because my mom couldn't stop talking about how good it was. Parking was really easy since we got there right when they opened. We were greeted and helped immediately. We all got brunch with different sides, my favorites were the grits, whiting, and candied yams. They also had really good drinks as well. We sat upstairs since there was better lighting and enjoyed breakfast. Really enjoyed this place and it's home feel. I'll definitely be back when I'm back in New Jersey. read more

First time here and sampled cornbread, mac&cheese, and cobbler. I liked the cornbread light and not too sweet. Mac& cheese was also good. Cobbler had too much syrup and was too sweet for my taste. Place has nice layout but cannot comment on service as I was here outside of normal busy hours so was attended to immediately. I have to come back and sample other menu items. Colin read more

For my Dad's memorial service, we requested the affair be catered by Cornbread. That was the best meal all 60 people had eaten in their lifetime. We collectively felt the Love that went into the preparation of that food. The hands that made that food were blessed for my dad's home-going service. Everyone to a person said how great the food was, and when I had my chance to relax and eat, I felt the same way. I have a thing for soul food and my friend raved about this place so I gave it a try. The menu is not that large but that's not necessarily a bad thing. We ordered ahead so that we could pick up the food and we ended up staying and eating on the patio because no one else was seated there. We got there early and to our surprise, the food was already ready. Now for the food...we all ordered the large Whiting meal with mac and cheese and yams. I also ordered collard greens. The fish was seasoned to perfection and crispy. Loved it. The cornbread, greens and mac n cheese was also delicious. The yams were a bit sweet but still worked. We also bought the uptown drink and that hit the spot so much on this hot day. Overall, I enjoyed my food very much and I will definitely return if in the area. read more

First time checking this place out. I heard about the one in Newark before but didn't know they had a closer location in Maplewood up until yesterday. They have a parking lot in the back, the spot is nicely located in Maplewood with pretty curb appeal and I love that they have a front porch that you can be seated at. When you walk-in you place your own order at the kiosk or if you're paying cash someone will assist at the register. I ordered my food for dine-in but for some reason they packed it all to-go. While waiting for my food I noticed that the dine-in food portions (which are priced the same as takeout) are larger. As a result, I was annoyed when I had to sit outside with a bunch of containers but I didn't say anything because the staffed seemed overwhelmed. As far as the taste of the food, I enjoyed a 2 piece chicken, with yams and Mac n cheese. The chicken was decent, yams were made well, but the Mac was definitely lacking creaminess and flavor. My boyfriend got the same meal but with collard greens instead of the Mac, those were good as well. The cornbread taste like corn cake to me as well, and the drinks were okay. read more

I was there yesterday 4/20/2024. The food was good . I just think everyone should wear hairnets on the heads . The girl that was serving food with the long eye lashes (i didn't get her name) she was very rude . They made a mistake and gave me 2 yams and I only ask for one yam with a Mac n cheese. She goes and tell the guy ' oh that bitch is a fucking liar that's not what she ask for and I'm not making that bitch her Mac n cheese. So the guy (other server) made my Mac n cheese. .. I didn't hear her say it cause I would have cursed her ass but my boyfriend heard her say those nasty things. read more

Cornbread has the potential for 4 stars, but I received skimpy sides so I won't come back! I paid for a fried chicken large dinner which came to $19 which I don't mind paying if I received my money's worth! The fried chicken wasn't that good. They did give me a nice amount of chicken for the price. But, the reason I love soul food so much is because of the side dishes. I ordered the Mac and cheese and the candied yams as my sides which came with the dinner. The candied yams were DELICIOUS! But, I only received 2 small ones! The container was only half full! The mac and cheese was good, but again it was only half full! In the pictures of what other people posted the sides looked like generous portions! Unfortunately, mine were skimpy portions especially for $19! The dinner also came with cornbread, and that was good! Overall, the food was ok/good, but I'm not coming back after the skimpy sides I received. If you want to try it you might luck out and have full side dishes! read more
