There are also plenty of other types of fruit that you can pick at this orchard besides apples. For example, one can pick peaches, blueberries, and pears. We have been coming here for several years and haven't gotten around to partaking in this activity of picking other fruits than apples. There is also a big tent we can get homemade hard cider and listen to music from live musicians. There are hay rides and there's also a giant maze which your kids might love. You might notice a lot of "evidence of birds" on the barn walls - but this is because sparrows are welcomed as a natural insect control method during the summer. The blueberries are delicious and usually abundant. On the MA Upik site, it says no kids under 6 years old. This is OLD INFORMATION. (The current owners parents had nets hung that kids used to pull on / parents wouldn't pay attention). However, there are no more nets and no more age restrictions! I called ahead to make sure the 2-yr old picker with us would be welcome- and he was! The Entrance is marked with a homemade Upik sign To distinguish it from the driveway entrance to the horseback riding and stables. When you arrive you're greeted by a small tent where you pick up red buckets fashioned with a string (for convenient around the neck holding and double-fisted berry picking, of course!) Berries are measured by the quart. Notches have been made in the bucket to display the volume picked. They approximate how much you have picked to take home up to the half quart. Blueberries are $4.50 a quart (a steal, most places are $5.70-$6 from why I've seen. I have surmised that this is because the patch sits adjacent to the horseback riding farm part of the property otherwise present.). These prices of course only include the berries to take home, not the ones to be smacked on while picking - as we were reminded while both on our way in and out. Spraying the bushes only occurs as *required* by the State. No additional spraying of the fruit occurs You park a couple hundred feet from the tent, and walk downhill but only another 100-200 feet (it's a little steep, ask to park at the stables of hills are a big issue, I can't imagine they'd mind terribly) down to the blueberry patches. These ~1,200 someodd, 50ish year old plants are present in around four varieties. During this opening week, we found sweet, plump berries as far as the eye could see, and surprisingly few fellow pickers. Is this BC most other farms aren't starting Upik for another week? (I called a bunch ). Definitely put this farm on your list. Farm and Berries are easy to get to, delicious, and well-priced. the view with the horses is beautiful, there's a swingset that I assume visitors can use(?) and nice people run the place! What more can you want?

It was nice to bring my 2 year old and let him run around the farm. The produce was great quality, and organic from what I've read. Sadly, we wasted more than we ate. You pick a lot at one time, and must eat it quick or it goes bad, and being a full time working family, we found it hard to find time to prepare everything. I won't be signing up again next year, It's not the farms fault, but my own. I would like to visit once in awhile next year, and just buy what I need at the moment.

Applepickung has become the thing to do in Central Massachusetts in the fall and we've been to all…read morethe places ... Honeypot Hill (overcrowded) ... Nashoba Winery (You need a ticket, or they sell out. Apples are sparse and often need to be picked off the ground as there are none on the trees) ... Red Apple Farms (Our favorite for scenery but the apples aren't great) ... Bolton Farm (climbing up a steep hill with a bag full of apples) ... etc. Tougas is billed, by them, as the number one apple picking location in the country. Given the crowds, I can see why. You'd be best off going during the week because during the weekend, it's more crowded than Disney World. They have an outdoor food court with tables ... and the food is super pricey and super mediocre. Maybe below mediocre ... my $12 cheeseburger didn't even taste like meat. It had the consistency of a brown sponge soaked in grease. The pulled pork was surprisingly tasty ... but not the fresh type of BBQ you'd expect. More like something from a container brought home from the grocery store. The drinks are also crazy expensive. $9 for a draft beer ... and they leave 1/8th of the cup empty. I paid $36 for 3 beers after tax and asked if they would actually fill the beer up all the way. The server refused saying that the owner doesn't let them because if beer spilled out during pouring from the draft, that is wasted beer. So, instead they fill it 1/8th up ... and essentially save a'phantom beer' after pouring 8 beers. Pretty shitty. Beyond that, to charge an extra $2 for a sugar rim and an extra $4 for a single (stale) cider donut as garnish ... also shitty. Everywhere else does a sugar rim on a pumpkin beer in the fall for free. I am surprised they don't charge for ketchup and mustard for the food. Cheapskates. The apple orchard itself is nice. You get a 4 minute wagon ride included with a bag of apples. Here's the kicker though ... each $36 small bag of apples includes only 3 people in the orchard. It's $10 per person for extra people!!! If you buy the larger bag for $50, you get 5 people. The small bag holds about 15 medium-sized apples. That's pretty slimy making people pay extra if they want to bring 2 parents, two kids and grandparents. The orchard itself is not as picturesque as some of the other ones. This has young grafted trees, about 9 feet tall. Not really trees but thin sapplings modified to grow tons of fruit. The good thing is you won't have much trouble getting to the top. The bad thing is it feels more like walking through apple hedges than an apple orchard with real trees. Having said that, as of the first weekend in October, there were still lots of varieties of apples and plenty on the trees. The apples do taste good ... not the best we've had but not the worst. The trees are well marked and it's fairly easy to fill a bag up and we enjoyed every variety we tried. They do a good job of controlling the crowds ... you don't have to wait for than 20 minutes for a wagon ride to the orchard. There is a big petting zoo. The food does take a long time if there are crowds. (We waited 40 minutes peak season). I will say that they need to redesign the store. At the back of the store is a counter which serves ice cream and deli sandwiches. The line stretches outside of the building and wraps around. This makes it impossible to get into the store to browse. Overall, you probably won't hate your time here ... unless you really dislike crowds. Imagine Disney on school vacation week and that's what weekends here feel like. It feels more like a theme park or fair ... It doesn't have the homey and orchard-y feel that a lot of other places do. If you want more of a traditional apple picking experience in an orchard, I'd stay with some of the smaller spots in the area. If you want more scenery and foliage, Nashoba is your best bet. If you want a full day experience with a pumpkin patch, apple picking, wagon rides, food court, petting zoo, etc. this is crowded but some people might like that feel. Also, they have the best variety and don't run out as soon as smaller orchards due to the size of the property. Just make sure you save your money ... a bag of apples, lunch and a drink or two will set you back $200+.
