Picture pamphlets do not match this facility. We checked in for a two night stay based on how beautiful the rooms were on the pamphlet however decided to stay only one night because the conditions were so bad. Would recommend you spend your money someplace else. The staff tried to be helpful but epically failed. Checked in our first room but upon reaching the room, the key pad was falling off the door. Was given a second room and after 5 tries the key card would not work. What a horrible experience. This place is very outdated and needs some serious work. Main points: you might get a room straight out of a horror movie, and do not be fooled by the free breakfast. My mom stayed here for one night, and unfortunately it was a rough experience, at least at first. I chose this hotel for her because of its location by the water and the "lagoon view" room option. The first room (I believe it was unit 238) was straight out of a horror movie. As soon as we opened the door, we were hit with a horrible mix of cigarette smoke, must, and just general OLDness, even though the door clearly said "no smoking." Inside, things only got worse. The furniture was extremely old and filthy, you wouldn't even want to stand near the chairs and couch, let alone sit on them. The room looked like it hadn't been updated or properly maintained in decades, like we were in an apocalyptic movie. The light switches also didn't even work! We asked to switch rooms, and thankfully, the second one was SO much better. We were so relieved. It actually smelled clean, and while the furniture still had some stains, it felt WAY more acceptable and comfortable. If this had been our original room, I probably wouldn't be writing this review. The "free continental breakfast" was another letdown. It was nothing but packaged pastries, not worth advertising, and not anything anyone should be eating for breakfast. On a positive note, the receptionist was nice and helpful. I also don't blame the cleaning staff. The first room was BEYOND help. The real issue here is obviously poor management and a lack of care for guest experience. The fact that rooms like the first one even EXIST in this hotel is extremely unacceptable, especially considering the price they're charging. I live next to this place and I couldn't imagine why anyone would stay here. There is LOUD noise going on at all hours of the day and night. Anything from blasting music out of car speakers, groups of men loudly laughing at talking til 1 or 2 AM in the parking lot, screaming children running up and down the stairwells or in the parking lot. This is EVERYDAY, no matter if it's a week day or weekend. I have had to call the police multiple times for noise complaints past midnight. The families that live here have zero respect for their neighbors. If you want to stay in Alameda, unfortunately this would be the most disruptive place. From the other reviews, it seems this place is (low income?) housing instead of a hotel. I moved in December and this has been the norm since I moved. It's dirty, outdated, and noisy. The lobby carpet was the start of the bad experience: it was dirty. Next, the room was worn out with ghetto-like bathroom. And there are people living there who make lots of noise in the central yard area until 10pm or later. It's prolly The dumpiest motel in Alameda, and the only good thing about it is the location across from the shopping mall, bowling alley, and beach. The genuine customer service needs improvement. From check in to asking for 2 towels has been a horrible nightmare. At check in there was no greeting, smile, or genuine welcome. There is 2 of us, and we were given 2 towels. We both have long hair and are used to using two towels 1 for wet hair and 2 for our body. I was hung up on. Being told I could get towels at 9am! The room that we stayed in was not good. Sinks were clogged, fridge handles broken, sinks not clean, rusted drain, ultimately everything was not good. Also they had dresser next to the LCD tv but the top half swung open. I thought they were shelves that can be used for clothes but there was an old CRT tv in there. Why? The whole place needs a remodel and needs an elevator. I've seen an elderly struggling to go up and down the stairs. I should have checked the reviews about this hotel. I don't live in Alameda anymore and needed a place to stay for the holidays. But prior, I've lived in alameda for a long time and always thought this place was nice but to my surprise it was not. You have to be ready and do your homework. I booked it a month ago without out looking at the reviews. Until two days before we left. I had Just seen the pictures and the price. We got a room with a view of the pool. It was a large room with two queen beds. It didn't smell which I was scared of. Kitchenette was a lifesaver. I took my own pot and pan. Had my own sponge with a little dishwashing soap. The place was quite . I took my flip flops because I had read that. The carpet needs major cleaning. The curtain that touched the kitchenette was really dirty. However the place was clean. It's a block away from the beach, and across the street is the shopping center. I mean the location is perfect. Alameda County uses this motel to house Afghan refugees year round.....I don't oppose it but I oppose their behavior and not regulating rules and order. The men are always outside in the parking conjugating, talking loud, playing music, they bring the furniture outside, kids are loud and are running around all day..... this lasts well after 10pm, the women go to SouthShore plaza across the street and ask for money..... it's not a restful place read more

2.5 We stayed here for about a week this summer and it was ok. It was pretty cheap, plenty of parking in their private lot, and I liked that there was a kitchenette in our room and you could borrow pots and pans from the front desk. We really only needed the room to sleep so it wasn't absolutely horrible. However, it's severely outdated. The floors a very uneven and need redone, the balcony patio we had I wouldn't let my kids out on because the railing would have probably collapsed if you put weight against it. The patio lock was also extremely outdated and worn (it was a screw one but the thing was so worn it wouldn't have taken much for someone to break in). The internet was also not great, which led to a lot of frustration for our kids and we ended up just using our hotspot. It was clean but also extremely musty smelling. There wasn't mold or dirt everywhere but it definitely needs an overhaul and a lot of TLC from redoing the floors, to updating everything. Would I stay here again? Yes if we had to. Since it is cheap and we don't use our room when we go places for more than a place to sleep I wouldn't be opposed, but I'd also try to find somewhere better before I made a reservation here again. I did like that across the road there was a shopping center and Safeway so it was easy to grab snacks/groceries if we needed. read more

I stayed at the Coral Reef Inn last weekend. I believe the inn was converted from an apartment complex and it was adjacent to another complex, which was noisy. The Inn needs a major upgrade. Doesn't look like anything significant has been done since the 1970s. Carpets at the Inn and my room were old and filthy. The carpet on the stairs was also ripped which could create a safety hazard. My room was large but the blanket on my bed had two disgusting brown stains on it which I told the staff about. My room key stopped working and had to be reactivated. The woman at the front desk seemed unfriendly though to her credit she discounted the room price including taxes and fees to $125/night. Continental breakfast was below average compared to ones I have had at other places. On the positive side the Inn was across the street from a shopping center and a close walk to the beach. Also I had a nice view of the hotel courtyard from my room. However, given the problems I noted I do not recommend staying here even at the discounted room price. read more

Calling this place a dump is an upgrade! I take complete responsibility for not looking further into reviews on different sites. If there were a way to give negative stars or nothing I would. I should have known when I saw the sketchy looking people hanging out. I had no idea they lived there. Clothing hanging on balconies and "lost" looking people sitting outside smoking should have been the first red flag. They get you because I'm not sure there's a way to call up and book it directly! You have to go thru a 3rd party so you've already prepaid and screwed by the time you get there! Toilet didn't work neither did the phone. Next room those things worked but the tv in the living room didn't work! Which was fine because YOU do NOT want to sit on the couch or chair in there. Stained and filthy the furniture and carpets were! The room reeked of must even with the slider wide open didn't help. Thick caked on dirt and dust on the fan blades in the kitchen and bedroom. The only safe thing to sit on was the coffee table. The other tables had either glue stuck on them or permanent water stains. Furniture was chipped and warped. I didn't dare open the fridge or go into the kitchen! Dry rot throughout the property, missing gutters with grass growing out of it. Stairs and walkways need power washing! Stained with god knows what! The curtains were vile! Stained with what is anyone's guess! I think the last modern day upgrade they put in was the soft close toilet seat! Drain drains slow, hair (that was not mine) on the linoleum floor. Shower probably was a crime scene at some point. I swore my shoes and suitcase wheels were getting dirty in the room. I had to buy Lysol to spray everything down before I switched to a different place! I must've lost something's in the room and I wasn't going back to get them! Out of fear, I left the lights on all night in the living room and the tv on in the bedroom. I was afraid if it were dark what may crawl out of the walls at night. A spark came out of the outlet when trying to plug in my charger! I do not understand how this place hasn't been cited by housing authority by those who live there or cited for the disgusting conditions! It's shameful that they had housekeeping and I don't think the place can be "cleaned" because it's so outdated! I'm in shock the city would allow a dump like this to exist! It needs to be torn down and rebuilt! It's a great location but that's it! If, you ended up stuck there for a night like me, zip everything up you have just in case! Very noisy with multiple families living in the motel. Our friends from Europe stayed here and had items stolen from their room, like men's dress shoes. Their room was dirty with outdated decor, but the biggest issue is constant noise with people honking early in the morning and non-stop screaming from kids playing in the parking lot all day. read more

This is the worst hotel I've stayed at in recent memory! Not only were there 2 bullet holes in the curtains but there were knife marks in the floor, a 1940's kitchen, most uncomfortable bed that I've had the misfortune of sleeping on and to be honest a prison bed in solitary confinement would be more comfortable. This hotel is not worth the money they charge and the front desk attendant when we checked in last night was so nasty! He almost refused giving us extra blankets for our kids! Pink bath tub and rust holes in bathroom sink. Checked bed for bugs and it looked ok. But couldn't sleep due to itching through the night. Tossed my pajamas in the garbage. I had planned to book an Airbnb or Hawthorne for my stay, but I procrastinated and didn't get around to it. Consequently, I ended up booking a place that was close to my workplace. I made the reservation online, but checking in was a hassle because my maiden name was different from the one I used to book and pay for the room. However, I had a credit card with my married name on it, so I was able to sort it out. When I got to the room, I immediately noticed that it was old, dingy, and gave off a creepy vibe. The lighting was also dim and not very bright, which didn't help at all. I slept with the lights on, and before I did, I checked the closet to ensure that no one was hiding in there. The whole experience was quite unsettling, and I had terrible vibes staying there. The next morning, while getting ready, I accidentally spilled some coffee on one of the double queen beds. When I removed the sheets to clean up the mess, I discovered a large, deep, dark brown stain as big as the mattress on the bed. I was relieved that I hadn't slept on it! The mattress looked highly worn down, and the stain was gross. It was evident that the place was not well-maintained. To add to the unpleasantness, the toilet already had pee in it when I checked in. Overall, my stay was not a pleasant one, and I would not recommend this place to anyone. It was gross! read more

I only gave a star to write this review but they truly deserve 0 stars. I think this place deserves to be shut down, in all honesty. Let me explain... I got a room here for my father and brother who were traveling here for an emergency visit. They were tired from travel, and unfortunately ended up having to play musical hotel rooms at this place until they ended up in a was "decent". I was there during this process and it was just terrible. From floor to ceiling these rooms looked disgusting. First room? No power and literally smelled like a dead animal. Second room? No handle on the shower, so there was no way to turn it on, and the room smelled faintly of gas.Why you ask? The entire stove was falling apart. We discovered the entire range of the stove was falling off. Third room was simply settled on, but was truly as bad as the other two. They were so tired they slept hot and sweaty on a bed they decided to share(their air conditioner wasn't working in this room, no surprises there!). They were so tired at this point as it was 1 in the morning and they couldn't take it anymore! A horrible first experience for them in Alameda. All other hotels and air bnbs were booked otherwise we would have left! Normally we are pretty easy people to please, but there was just so many things going wrong here... Our advice to others...Don't be fooled by their (likely purchased) 4 star reviews & 3.5 star reviews on other websites like we were. Don't be fooled by their really nice and clean lobby... and don't expect breakfast in the morning either! My dad went down for breakfast at 6:30am and found nothing and also spotted baby roaches on the counter. A nightmare!!! read more

The current rating of this hotel is accurate. I would give it exactly 2.5 stars, maybe 3 if I'm feeling particularly generous and were able to overlook certain things about this particular hotel and its amenities. However, the customer service was exceptional at the front desk as were the folks who helped me on Booking.com. I'm not a fancy person, but I have stayed in many, MANY budgeted hotels before in various locations for prices much lower than what Coral Reef asks for, and most of them have been much nicer in terms of cleanliness. I chose Coral Reef because I needed a moderately priced hotel for my work (I work late in Alameda sometimes) and one that could be located conveniently close in terms of commute. Coral Reef has a fantastic location, but let me tell you, it's very run down and kind of a dump. Cons: -Old, boxy TV from the 90s? -Frayed and torn carpet -Stained and chipped bathtub -Dust on dressers and lamps -Paper thin walls -Cramped parking lot -Chipped wallpaper and paint -Musty smell -Outside, there is rotting wood and paint coming off the front of the hotel. -WAY too expensive for what you get. They should charge no more than $85/night here. -Hard mattress paired with stiff, creaky box spring. Those are my criticisms for this hotel. The rooms are larger than average to be fair, but it feels like stepping into a time machine that takes you to an old 1980s motel with an outdated TV, outdated plumbing and retro wallpaper and fixtures. I'd love to like this place, but I'd honestly rather spend more and get exactly what I'm expecting with the price. Probably won't stay here again. read more

Me and my family of 5 rented there suite for 5 days for my 2 youngest daughters birthday the manager of the hotel chose to put us out because the sixth day i misplaced my credit card he had 3 maids carry all me and my children's belongings outside and kept our deposit 3 hrs later i was able to retrieve my card so i booked the room again this time he cancelled! my money was gone! It had been refunded to his hotel and not my card and so today i finally realized I've been waiting for my money to come back but it has already been paid to him! What in the world is going on with the people in alameda. A place of originality and kindness noway you allow people to come here and treat our black women and people this way! Charming home feel. If you want the feel of an old school apartment that feels like home, this is the place for you. We were on the lagoon and I could have gone fishing from the windows. We fed ducks from the balcony! This is obviously an older property, and our room had a full stove and oven and fridge/freezer. If you want modern and sheek this ain't it. Covered the pillows with T-shirt's. we would have moved if we'd had the option. not sure but felt like it could have been a rent by the hour or a trap house. The Coral Reef Inn has soooo much potential it's ridiculous. My experience was good staff was friendly and helpful. What I thought was just going to be a standard room ended up being a suit, which totally caught me off guard lol. I hat to call the front desk and ask how much I was paying for my room and it was around $100. When I walked into my room none of the light switches worked so I was a little put off at first but all the table lamps worked. There was a nice kitchen with a full sized frig, microwave sink and stove / oven. I had a living room, kitchen table and when I opened up the curtains I was surprised to discover I was right on the water. Everything in the room was SUPER out dated but a big ass suit right on the water for $100 bucks ya can't go wrong. If they dumped a little money into this place they would be sitting on a gold mine. Parking was easy and it was conveniently located next to the down town area . Oh yeah and the property was well kept. I'd recommend staying here and will be staying here again read more

This place is a bit rundown but that is reflected on the price. The location is good. Close to the beach and shopping.

I was looking forward to this place because it is 1/2 a block to the shoreline, across the street from a mall that has a Trader Joe's, a Safeway, and a Ross and TJ Max where you can get bath bombs and a peel off mask for a steal. So, I go in, but, they can't find my reservation. I'm sure I had made it. The guy at the front acted like he was my ex boyfriend. I realized, making the reservation in a hurry, I had booked a month ahead. I said, I'm sorry, my mistake and he gave me look made me think of Mink Stole: "Sorry? How can you repay me for the 30 seconds you've stolen from my life?!!!" I should have seen that as foreshadowing. The place itself is okay, reasonably priced. It's relatively clean. But I kept trying to figure out why the customer service was less about "hi, welcome" and more like wondering where their life had gone so terribly wrong. And over the week, I began to understand. There was a woman staying next to me who had a number of people over who just hopped her balcony to come in without being noticed, and left around 6am. A girl was crying out on the balcony twice in the middle of the night. Around 10am some guy is yelling about some bitch-ass bitch in the hallway. Seriously, what is with people yelling in the hallway? I was there a week, and not near my car that much, and when I was, 2 different people requested a jump for their battery, 1 woman asking me as she saw me trying to load my car with all my stuff. My gas tank cap light went on, and I noticed about 1/4 of the tank was gone. They serve a light continental breakfast, and I got there as a woman was taking danishes and yogurts to her room for the people who didn't want to come down, she said, and kind of cleaned it out. Why stop there? Why not grab a handful of sugar packets and put them in your purse? So, it gave me a lot of empathy for the front staff and what they must have to go through on a daily basis. read more

Right about 10 pm an EXTREMELY loud gathering took place in the parking area right outside my room, and continued until at least 3pm. There was arguing and very loud/vibrating music. I'm not sure a hotel employee was even on duty because surely they would have called the police about the disturbance. One expects to be able to sleep at a hotel. Twice several hours apart the next morning I attempted to find an employee at the front desk to complain, with no luck at that time either. The only good thing I can say is the bed was ok, barely. I canceled the remaining 2 days I had planned to stay and went to Hampton Inn instead. My advice: don't stay here! read more

He had zero customer service skills, whatsoever and seeing the inside inn being dreary and not as it portrayed online we decided not to stay and spend more at a better inn motel with better customer service! When I tried to cancel booked room the desk clerk immediately yelled on the phone stating That cannot be done!!!!!! I booked on Travelocity and spoke to representative and she took a formal complaint and she spoke to that desk clerk while I was on hold with her, and she said the clerk was everything but NOT nice zero empathy even to her trying to explain that it could be cancelled before stay with ample notice. So, great news my card blocked that desk clerk..he tried to get the full 2 nights!! Even after speaking to Travelocity rep. As I sit on an old, unattractive sofa at the Coral Reef Inn I am writing this review. This hotel needs some love. My room smells of former smokers and recent paint that has been used to cover the odor. We slept with the slider door open to try and get some fresh air. The room clearly hasn't been updated in at least two decades. The old carpet carries the smells of ages of use. The shower head is cheap, the bathroom fan smells of cigarette smoke. The single pane slider windows allow every sound to effect your ears. I can see the 90's in this room, alive and well. The location is great if you want to be between lagoon and inlet. The views are lovely once you take the short walk to the small beach. Nearby there is a mall in the case that you need incidentals or shopping unavailable in your area. Do not be fooled by their photos and marketing materials. If there are rooms that look as nice as the ones on the fliers and website there are only a few. The price point may be appropriate for the area, but not for the accommodations. It is unfortunate because there is much potential here. read more

All you pay for here is the location, and that is being generous. It's right near the Bay and across the street from Southshore Center with all its shops and restaurants. I live in Alameda. I stayed 3 nights to get away from my family members who had COVID. The first room they put me in didn't have working air conditioning. I asked for another room and that one was dirty, the furniture old, the curtains frayed, the table surfaces sticky, the floor squeaky, the tub was scratched and worn, and the bed bowed in the middle. I had to use a safety pin to get the curtains to close and block the blaring light from the parking lot outside. Totally depressing. I really wish this hotel would shut down, be razed to the ground and a real hotel built at this location. Alameda needs a good, clean and reasonably priced hotel. This isn't it.
