Elk's Lodge hosted a delightful birthday celebration in August, and it was a memorable experience…read more The festivities took place in one of their elegant ballrooms, downstairs, and were expertly catered by High Street Station. The food was simply scrumptious, and it was heartwarming to witness older Alameda residents coming together to celebrate the birthdays of their peers. We were also served by the Alameda Boy Scouts who were great servants and made sure our glasses were full and assisted with busing our plates. Elk's Lodge, a renowned national fraternal organization, has a close-knit Alameda chapter. The dance floor was a lively spot, and their Chardonnay was an absolute treat. I eagerly anticipate attending another event at this wonderful venue. Additionally, they provide ample parking in their own lot.

I'm giving the lodge a four star for my dining experience and an enjoyable evening. My husband has been here more than a few times to play games of pool with our friendly neighbor and one of his friends. I have been here before for another event almost three years ago. The interior is beautiful, but the walls are thin. One can actually hear people talking in the next room. Our meeting place was the Mahogany Room for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. I did not want to stuff myself with the appetizers and not have enough room in my stomach for the main entree - crab. Nor did I want any libation before the meal. After the cocktail hour, we were escorted to the Rathskeller (basement of the lodge) where the dinner was held. The gentlemen on the waitstaff were lined up in an orderly manner, serving us whatever we desired - be it the bowtie/penne pasta, dinner rolls/garlic bread, coffee, dessert. Presentation of the crab, the wines (red and white), Caesar salad and the antipasti plates was excellent...casual, yet classy. Dessert was a serving of raspberry sorbet. The only minor drawback was the bowtie/penne pasta served on the same plate as the salad plate. Even though I did not win any of the door prizes after making a donation of $20 for 20 raffle tickets, they had some nice ones, such as the $100 gift card from Scott's Seafood, $100 gift card for Yoshi's dinner and show, $50 gift cards from La Penca Azul, C'era Una Volta, 1400 Bar and Grill, Jim's Coffee Shop, Pier 29. From what I heard, the lodge raised about $1,500 in raffle ticket sales. I also have to give kudos to the waitstaff, many of whom were very tolerable and patient with this woman who sat at the next table behind my husband. She was in the wine (whine) mode. "I want penne pasta. I don't want this dinner roll with butter. I want some garlic bread. Don't you guys have any garlic bread?" On and on she went...egads...she had a sense of entitlement. Yes, there were two bottles of wine at each table, but her incessant whining almost had me do a "face palm" on her. Ooh, I wanted to offer her a piece of cheese, which would have complemented a glass of wine very well. (Now, quit your whining, lady...lol.)

I made a reservation to celebrate my friends' 50th birthday for 3:30pm outdoors. We arrived about 30minutes early and checked in w/the hostess. She veered us towards the back wall, where we could order a couple glasses of champagne while we waited. The young man that helped us decide which dry brut we wanted was great (bar)! We were seated before 3:30 and the metal tables can be slippery and ours was too small for everything to fit. I ended up knocking my $18 1/2 glass of champagne on the ground where it shattered (I have tremors in hands) - not a single employee came by to ask if we were ok, to clean it up, move us to another table or offer to fill my glass back up 1/2 way. This is within the first 15minutes of sitting. Our server was a ghost. She had on this dark purple, pinstriped shirt (not hard to miss) and would walk by and tell us she'd be "right back!". All she did was check in when we were first seated to ask what we wanted, before we read the menus. She didn't ask our prefereces, she didn't go over any specialty wines or specials. I was very disappointed with the entire experience. We both got the red flights on top of our champagne. We ony liked two reds and the pours were so small, it was truly difficult to tell all the depth, character and full bodiness of them. We bought no wine bottles. And, no one encouraged a sale either. I was going to get the JFJ white bubbly, but this place with its poor service, tiny pours (not even 2oz) and even tinier charcuterie plate serving sizes wasn't worth it (salami, goat cheese w/oil, espresso cheese, 1/4 baquette w/oil). I was so embarassed that I brought my friend here for her 50th thinking we'd have a blast, like at Rockwall or Dasche - NOPE. All that for $135!

We were surprised that it wasn't very busy, so there were plenty of lanes available without much of a wait. Our server was friendly and attentive throughout the night, and the entire facility was clean and well maintained. They also have a pretty large arcade section and a full bar, so there's plenty to do beyond just bowling. We ordered one of the fishbowl-style margaritas to share, but it barely tasted like it had any alcohol. We ended up ordering a second one and still didn't really feel much, which was a little disappointing. As for the food, it was definitely better than your typical bowling alley food, but nothing that really stood out. We accidentally ordered the mozzarella bites instead of mozzarella sticks because we didn't read the menu carefully--that was totally on us! The bites were actually tasty, just not what we were expecting. The lemon pepper boneless wings were a bit too salty for our taste and were drier than we had hoped. The fries were exactly what you'd expect, good, classic fries. The best part of the night was the bowling itself. We managed to squeeze in about eight games in two hours, so we definitely felt like we got our money's worth! Overall, we had a fun experience and would absolutely come back, whether it's for another date night or to celebrate a birthday with friends. If you're looking for a clean, modern bowling alley with good service, arcade games, and a fun atmosphere, Lucky Strike is definitely worth checking out.
