Sadly I do not recall my experience here to be able to write a thorough review. I will say for pub food, it was pretty alright. And I was impressed.

Burger and fries

Atmosphere was that of a pub. Service was great and friendly. Food was great! The fries were amazing- cut differently and covered in a chicken stock spice.

Wings and ribs (the flavors were mixed up/reversed)
Elaine C.

We went to Copper Penny based on reviews and how it was close to our hotel. We were in town for a competition. We didn't need to wait to be seated. Service was friendly but a bit on the slow side (it wasn't busy yet). We had ordered the wing and rib combo but the sauces were reversed (we wanted BBQ on the ribs and Thai on the wings). We didn't ask to redo it because it had taken a while to get to the table. Overall food was average but we found that everything was quite salty. Like another reviewer stated, the fries were so salty we couldn't eat them. We ended up drinking water all night.

Seafood platter ($22)
Nazanin S.

Really friendly service with lots of seating area! I went in for a Sunday lunch with a friend and we didn't have to wait at all to be seated. I ordered the seafood platter which came with 3 pieces of breaded shrimp, battered fish, tartar sauce, sriracha cod filet, lots of seasoned fries, and coleslaw. While the fish was delicious and filling, the fries were *very* salty -- salty enough that I had to keep drinking water. They have an extensive dessert menu as well. The meal came to $22 so it is quite a pricey place, but the local diner vibes are fantastic!

Thai chicken bowl.

While in Kingston, we were looking for a restaurant that had outdoor seating downtown. The menu looked good, so we settled on the Copper Penny and we're glad we did. We had the tequila-lime chicken wrap, and the Thai bowl. Both were flavourful and I would recommend each. Service was quick and friendly, and I would happily return next time in Kingston!

Fish & chips

It quiet delicious even though it just a fish and chips. I am wondering the taste of other menu. Staffs are very kind.

Chicken Tetrazzini - best pasta I've ever had!
Rebecca C.

This diner was recommended by two local cab drivers who immediately suggested Copper Penny when we told them we were hungry. Food: 4.5/5 The chicken tetrazzini was one of the best pastas I've ever had! So flavourful, salty enough, chicken breast was juicy, mushrooms soaked up the sauce. Not a perfect score only because the other pasta dishes that my friends got (pesto ravioli and mac and cheese) weren't as flavourful in my opinion. Another table near us got burgers and fries and the portions looked huge! Price: 4/5 A bit on the pricier side, but I was full! Would pay that price for the tetrazzini but not for the other items. Ambiance: 5/5 Clean, cute, older style Service: 5/5 Our waitress was nice and made us feel welcome! Overall, I would come back for the tetrazzini, please do yourselves a favour and get it!!

Chocolate Suicide cake
Michael M.

Copper Penny is great for students. If you aren't a student, you'll find Copper Penny less your thing. Either way, it offers a wonderful range of drinks, and Chocolate Suicide cake is an amazing experience in chocolate-induced bliss. Service was solid, and again, the fries are too salty.

Great waiter today, really shined! Hostess was very kind. Waiter helped us pick vegan and gluten free options. They have separate fryers as well to cook food to limit cross contamination. Had a lovely lunch on the patio. Restaurant was clean and patio wasn't too noisy by Princess St. Definitely will be back, thank you Copper Penny.

My travel companion has a gluten allergy so we had to consider that while looking for a place. Thankfully we found Hey Darlin' Diner with its gluten-friendly menu, in the center of Kingston one block away from Princess Street. There was a decent amount of street parking available, but there is also a parking garage right next door. Not everything on the menu is marked gluten-friendly, but our waiter explained that the fried chicken and poutine are always made gluten-free. I couldn't decide between the two so I went with the dirty bird poutine, which is a fried boneless chicken thigh over poutine. The portion was huge! I was full after eating half and saved the rest for dinner when I was back home. The poutine and the chicken were both fried perfection--crispy, but not oily. Service was outstanding too! Our waiter was extremely friendly and checked on us frequently, and gave us recommendations of things to do while in Kingston. Definitely recommend stopping at Hey Darlin' for a filling meal, especially if you eat gluten-free.

The place is a bit dated and could use some fresh updates to the decorating, but it was still charming, comfortable seating, had tv to watch...but was VERY hot inside. My trip to Kingston fell, of course, during that heat dome event...and I already HATE summer and hot weather. The temperature in the restaurant wasn't terrible but I was sweating. Turned out to be worth it. They have a full bar and Laura, my server, made me a pineapple mimosa on request. She looked to be handling the fairly busy place by herself with help from I believe the owner or manager. She handled everything very well and wasn't too busy to tell me Happy Birthday (I had on a shirt and she was one of the few people who did) and chat a bit and be friendly. I appreciated that. She was obviously very hot running inside and out to the patio tables, but she maintained her composure and worked very hard. I ordered the breakfast poutine and they added the pulled pork to it when I asked. I also got a side of the baked beans. The fries were very fresh, crispy and tender. There were scrambled eggs, fresh crumbled bacon, cheese sauce and that glorious pulled pork on top. I really enjoyed this dish. Great idea, breakfast poutine! While eating I got to speak the owner (I believe she was). She was from Arizona so we are both dual citizens. We had a good talk about Dump decimating the US. The owner is a very liberal, accepting, kind person. Makes you feel good to support businesses run by compassionate people. The service was great. Food was phenomenal. Yes, the beans were so tasty too. Kind staff. Cute decor. I am returning to Kingston in October and will definitely be stopping in at Tommy's again. Fantastic diner food!

Again, the 5* review is relative to surrounding alternatives for Williamsville/sunnyside locals- it's either the old diner, or subway egg salad sandwich, or some simple but refreshing breakfast lunch and cute pastries. No brainer. The place is hidden in a building where medical clinics are, I found this place out when I was getting tested for STDs- nuff said. Which leads to my initial surprise- from outside and the location on princess I assumed it was another old place run by a hairy guy in greasy cloth and the lights don't work, but it's not. It's clean, airy, modern. Second the pricing is good- decent amount of food for the money, and pay at the counter, tip if you would. Food is on the light side, with some Asian influence reminding me of Taiwanese tea shop menus- although it's not. It's a bit in between, but you can definitely see something you won't find in a greasy spoon restaurant on their daily featured lunch. I'm on a coffee detox so regrettably I cannot review their coffee items yet. Another plus is free WiFi The downside and probably why it took me a year to find this place although I live close by- they are not open on Sat and Sun! Closes early mon - fri as well. This is a bit odd. Again- if I take this place out of the context of this depressing part of kingston, I would've given it a 4 star maximum. But I think locals will find this place a much appreciated alternative to the smelly Tim Hortons down the street or walking thirty minutes for the next failure.

OK, this is a mixed review…read more First to start off, the service was great. The ambience is somewhat dated but elegant. The new patio looks great, but you can't see the river from the dining room now.. Now the food: My friend had the steak and he was very happy with it. Although he said, it was a little more rare than he would've liked. But otherwise, it was very good. Our other guest had the special, which was the salmon. And they were very happy with it. My dish unfortunately it was not so great. I had the pan-fried Seabass. As soon as it was brought to me, the first thing I noticed was a plate of nothing but brown colors. The fish is filleted with the skin left on. (which I would preferred it not to have been.), but layered on top of pearl couscous. Which was supposed to have feta. But somehow they substitute it with goat cheese, which was horrible. Because if you don't like goat cheese, it just makes everything taste awful. But there was no color to this dish. The Seabass was overcooked. It had a consistency more like trout. I've never had this type of Seabass before, so maybe I was expecting a Chilean Seabass? But it was very thin and there was not a lot of substance to it. The waiter was great and he did bring me some new couscous without the goat cheese. But by that time I had eaten my dinner. Now Desert: the kitchen really needs to let their weight staff know when they run out of things because our server had to come back to our table 3 times saying that they were "out of that." my friend friend had the peach sorbet, which he said was very good. The caramel pudding was excellent. I had the flan, honey and lavender. I really didn't taste any lavender. It just tasted like custard to me. My friend's family has been coming here for years. So hopefully next time I will get a better dish. It just seemed to me like the sous chef was in the kitchen tonight and not the chef.

We love good food at cool places just like any of our demographic (which we'll gladly pay for) and we were unexpectedly impressed. The room is not beautiful but there's a comfortable feel and a lovely water view. The menu and specials offer a few gems for the more adventurous and it is a feast of local goodness for locavores. I had the lamb carpaccio and the trout fillet with spinach salad. Both were creative without compromising clean flavours. The husb had the Table d'hote which was a 4 course steal at $48: cream of mushroom soup, pulled pork arancini with black bean curry, pan-seared tilapia and choice of dessert, black forest semi freddo. All of it fabulous with bursts of flavours. They have a long, reasonably priced wine list that covers new and old world and many Canadian options. The service is calm and doting and the piano player was a lovely throw back without being cheesy.

They have absolutely 100% scrumptious bread! And baked goodies. I love their dinner buns. I was in Kingston recently and really wanted those dinner buns, unfortunately they didn't have them. Not on Sunday, not on Monday. I settled for their mini olive and rosemary dinner rolls. They were good too. Service here is pretty on point. There was a question I had asked the lady behind the counter and she came out from behind the counter to help answer any questions I had and serve me. She was really awesome! They have a catering menu, a cafe for brunch, they have fresh breads available and they do specialty cakes. They are totally the real deal. AND they sell Neal Brothers' cheese puffs. The place is open and bright wherever you sit, whether on the outdoor patio, downstairs by the bar, or upstairs. Service was excellent. My reservation was smoothly handled, and my server took good care of me. I got offeres some bread and butter after I ordered, which was really a nice surprise. The offered breads were seeded, ollve, and rustic style. All delicious, especially with the sweet butter. For the main meal, I got a half dozen oysters, an order of cha gio and their Ahi Dragon Noodle Salad. The cha gio were crispy, not greasy, sweet and savoury. The oysters were super fresh, sweet and a good size. Along with the usual condiments, they included pickled red onion, which is the first time I've ever had this. I really enjoyed the acidic sweet bite enhancing the sweetness of the oysters. The Ahi Dragon Noodle Salad had microgreens, red cabbage, red and green and yellow sweet pepper, red chili pepper, edamame, coriander, green onions, and fried parsnip chips. The Ahi was charred on the outside, fresh and meaty. I appreciate that the sesame oil, soy sauce and hint of chili on the perfectly chewy noodles was separate from the veggies. The vegetables had a very clean flavour, but I would have liked something more, maybe a touch of citrus. A glass of good wine rounded out the whole experience. I was way too full at the end of the meal to even contemplate dessert. All in all, a great meal, and I would return any time.
