We went to Copper Penny based on reviews and how it was close to our hotel. We were in town for a competition. We didn't need to wait to be seated. Service was friendly but a bit on the slow side (it wasn't busy yet). We had ordered the wing and rib combo but the sauces were reversed (we wanted BBQ on the ribs and Thai on the wings). We didn't ask to redo it because it had taken a while to get to the table. Overall food was average but we found that everything was quite salty. Like another reviewer stated, the fries were so salty we couldn't eat them. We ended up drinking water all night. read more

The worst meal I've ever been served in a restaurant! Was looking forward to their classic fries, didn't happen it was substituted, with a different kind of french fry! My wrap maybe had two pieces of chicken in it, it was mostly lettuce.. the worst wrap I've ever eaten, asked for Cajun chicken, not sure what happened because it certainly wasn't Cajun! Really friendly service with lots of seating area! I went in for a Sunday lunch with a friend and we didn't have to wait at all to be seated. I ordered the seafood platter which came with 3 pieces of breaded shrimp, battered fish, tartar sauce, sriracha cod filet, lots of seasoned fries, and coleslaw. While the fish was delicious and filling, the fries were *very* salty -- salty enough that I had to keep drinking water. They have an extensive dessert menu as well. The ambiance was pleasant. The staff was very friendly. Service was good. I was not very happy with the food. I ordered a dish that consisted of ravioli and a side Caesar salad. My order came and my wife... doing as she does... snagged a crouton from my plate (she likes crunchy croutons and hates salad). Immediately she screws up her face and says the croutons are stale. I've never tasted more stale croutons. The rest of the salad was made with crispy fresh lettuce... so the salad was not inedible. My ravioli was not prepared properly (in my opinion). I could have stabbed my fork in the center and lifted the entire portion into the air as one mass. I separated each ravioli as best I could, so I could get sauce on each as I ate them. The sauce was good in my opinion. If the sauce would have been added to cooked pasta product immediately after cooking the ravioli might not have stuck together as one mass. I might find this OK if I got that at someone's house as a guest... but I expect better from a restaurant. read more

Second , as we are leaving, about 2 feet from the door the bartender says to put our masks on because he was probably the owner or manager and overheard me tell the waitress feedback about the overpriced upgrade, which she agreed and said it used to be free and thanked me for the feedback. Found a cute place downtown with the patio open. Overall great service and great food, with limited items in the menu due to covid. Got the beef dip sandwich and spicy (buffalo) chicken wrap. Both were pretty good portions with the fries. The fries were actually really good; apparently they're "legendary" fries that you should definitely go for. Their fries are excellent as well - they are tossed in a seasoning mix (I believe it's powdered chicken soup) which adds a nice kick of flavour. The pasta portions are enormous, albeit a bit on the greasy side. Large selection of cakes for desserts, ranging from cheesecakes to rich chocolate cakes and excessively heavy chocolate cakes. Personally, the dessert selection reminds me of the bakery aisle at Metro, so I tend to steer clear of it. Overall, the place is A-OK for a diner-style eatery. Great if you want to enjoy a hockey game over a nice sandwich (I don't recommend the soulaki wrap though, I found it dry and tasteless), but it won't do if you're craving anything more refined than a chicken parmagiana. read more

The food is comfort food such as chicken parmesan, poutine, steak, etc. The price is decent clearly evident that they are catering to the student market there and the atmosphere is great. We went into the Penny yesterday for the first time in over five years. NOTHING HAS CHANGED. The menu is the same as it was years ago. The atmosphere is the same, too. What's really awesome is that I don't think the prices have changed either! We had two orders of French onion soup (it was good) fish and chips (good, although the metal basket they were served in was annoying), huge Greek salad with chicken and monster five layer sandwich and fries. No alcohol. Our meal was about sixty bucks. It's not a place just for students. Anyone who honestly thinks that is just a snob. It's not a place for hardcore foodies though. The food is good. Went to Copper Penny for lunch on Sunday with the family (wife & 3 kids). Food is definitely well priced. Quality is OK, but I recommend you stick with the pastas. My wife and son both had great pasta dishes and I'd recommend these and would probably give them 4 stars for these dishes. Sadly, my meal was not as good. Stay away from the ribs! They are not "fall off the bone" as described in the menu. Instead, they were chewy, warm, and full of gristle and bone. As I read from someone else, the fries are also terrible. I think these are possibly the only fries I've ever had to leave as they are chock-full of salt and some other seasoning they added. We went here for our holiday lunch with colleagues. It's a comfy spot and not too busy for weekday lunch. The service is excellent! Prompt and respectful. My friend had the French onion soup which was spot on. I had the fish and shrimp while other s tried pasta and ribs. All food options were delicious! Their fries were the perfect thing for a cold afternoon. Coffee after was smooth and tasty. Unfortunately their desserts were not that amazing. Even though the chocolate suicide cake, cheesecake and applied bruigae looks yummy, each came short of expectation. Round 2! I finally got around to giving The Copper Penny a second chance and I'm glad I did. It was a completely different experience! This time when I went it was busy, and the waitress we had was very polite. I have no complaints on service or atmosphere. This time I followed a friends lead and tried the "penny club." Basically a club house add roast beef. It was DELICIOUS! I will definitely be getting it again. They are well known for their fries and they are so tasty. The food was delicious basic fare, but served a reasonable amount (8oz steak + 6oz chicken breast + small rack of ribs + a chicken finger + fries). Hands down the best I've ever had, and that includes those okay gourmet places like Hero Burger in Toronto. Toppings are creative, like goat cheese and sundried tomatoes and mushrooms. Ah, the mushrooms. Their sweet potato fries made me swoon, and even their vegetarian (meatless!) burgers with a portobello mushroom looked awesome. And the dessert! The cake slices seem a little overpriced at 7-8 bucks a pop, but once you see the size of them, you'll understand. We ordered a slice to share between four people and it was absolutely decadent. Friday nights, the clientele range from kids, teens, students, and couples, all the way to seniors. The service is always very friendly and efficient, and the prices are very competitive. Their fries are really good (dusted), and their wraps are all yummy too. Apparently they are getting a small patio on the street front this year, which will be cool.
