Last December, I was lucky enough to win a prize package from Kam Do Bakery from a contest they…read moreheld on social media. I received with a box of assorted pastries, a box of wife cakes, and $30 in gift cards. This is my honest review of my visit and I wasn't required to post a review. When I came into the store, the staff were confused about what I was trying to pick up at first, but it was quickly resolved when the manager came to the front counter and I explained to her that I was one of the contest winners. The queue was short because not many customers was inside at the time so I was in and out pretty quickly. The store area was spacious and there were quite a lot of pastries on display. The pastries i received were beautifully boxed. They could definitely be presented as gifts to loved ones or work colleagues. The box was gold and red, with a golden foiled design on the lid and a gold string ribbon to keep the lid closed. The pastries themselves were gorgeous. Just looking at them made my mouth water. They were soft and crumbly to the touch. The buns of the pastry were buttery and the outer layer was very flaky with every bite. Some of the pastry buns had sesame seeds sprinkled on the top. They were all baked perfectly. The inside fillings were quite sweet but no overly sweet. There was no indication on the box on what kind of pastries they were so im not totally sure what kind of pastries i received. Some had a sweet tasting filling with an egg yolk or a century egg center, just red bean paste, or just some other type of sweet filling. I shared the pastries with my family over afternoon green tea and they were a hit! My family loved them. The wife cakes I received were very soft, tasted delicious, and sweet but not as sweet as the assorted pastries. They were filled with winter melon filling, i believe. They were also made a great pairing when they were served with tea. They were all individually wrapped with plastic wrap which helped keep them fresh. The boxed was also nicely designed with gold and red colors. My family really liked them. Overall, i think Kam Do bakery is one of the best Chinese bakeries in Richmond. Gotta give them 5 stars for their absolutely delicious pastries.

Kam Do is a Vancouver staple and I swung by at 11:30 AM on a Saturday to a nearly empty store. Only tried a few options, but was genuinely impressed by the classics done well! FYI it is cash only in spite of being a chain with multiple locations Egg Tart: Just the manifestation of the quintessential egg tart. Super flaky crust and perfectly smooth egg custard. Pineapple Bun: I really wanted to get the Bo Lo Yo, but apparently, this location of Kam Do doesn't offer it, so I settled for a regular Pineapple Bun. Not doing this with butter is such a shame though because for a not super fresh pineapple bun, THIS WAS INCREDIBLE. Fluffy and not dry at all in the center. Thick cookie crust was the perfect level of sweet. If this was fresh, I think I would have died on the spot.

Also ordered some pastries: maple pecan brioche, Apple danish, fruit and custard danish, birdsnest, coconut macaroon, and can't remember the last thing, we ate it so fast. Everything was so good! Everything had a nice texture, not too rich or doughy. Well sized, so you can cut and share. Too bad we live too far away to frequent this place more often. I had my hands full with the cake box and all, so the cashier went out of her way to open the door for me! She had also pointed out the goodies on the shelf behind her which I wouldn't have noticed if she didn't. Just a couple of seats in front of the window so more of a take out place. Place is just lovely! Bring cash or debit only, no credit card.

It is quite a small store inside with no seating but I did appreciate how it had a ramp to get inside as I had my stroller with me that day. I would have to say that every single one of the baked goods that I got were absolutely phenomenal and I cannot wait to be back to try more of their selections.
