This is unfortunately the closest cookout to me.... Shelby cookout is dirty. If they don't care enough to clean the drive through area or the windows, how do you think the inside looks? The service is horrible. Prepare to order 4 times before the third person on the headset gets your order. Order accuracy here is a coin flip, 50% of the time you get what you ordered. OMG so the bad reviews for this place make me so sad! My husband and I tried this Cook Out location because it was on our way somewhere and a friend previously recommended us to try it. It's a super small building with just a double drive through and walk up window like Checkers/Rally's, but it's a much smaller property and it was very very busy (on both sides!) when we visited. If you have never visited before, I definitely recommend looking up the menu beforehand, because it's a lot to take in when you drive up the first time with the pressure of a long line behind you. We pulled up knowing exactly what we wanted and we sort of treated it like a NY deli.. order your sh*t, pay, and get out lol. The service was exactly how I expected it would be, short and to the point, and that was fine with me. The food definitely lives up to its name, it tastes 100% like an outdoor cookout. I got a double burger with ketchup mayo and onions and I was extremely impressed by the flavor of the meat. Patties were thin but sooo flavorful. Like right off a charcoal grill. My hubby got the cheese and bacon hotdogs which were smothered in the cheese sauce and also tasted like right off the grill. Obviously best way to order your food is on a "tray" where it's the entree of your choice plus TWO sides! And sides include crazy stuff like a quesadilla, chicken nuggets, hush puppies, and a corn dog. The food is cheap and an okay portion! Our first time Eating here. Have to say it is very very busy location. Being the first time here we had no clue what to get, and it looked like you can order either side of the building. There is no sit down Inside just to go ordering. The girl at the window was not to friendly. They do get through the line faster than I thought they would. We had a hamburger just to try. It was pretty good and had a good flavor. Looking through the reviews I see some other locations are better set up. This is right off the hwy and very confusing when you pull in. They never get an order right, they definitely do NOT know how to cook onion rings properly, they never get a whole order correct and they are flat out rude! All these workers seem to care about is standing at the dumpster smoking weed. Went here as my first cookout experience. My wife kept bragging about it telling me the milkshakes were amazing so we got them for the whole family. After trying to order for about 5 minutes they finally read the list of milkshakes back and were correct. Got back home distributed said milkshakes and they gave us two wrong ones and mine was never made. Needless to say very disappointing and the staff was not the best as I was ordering. It's a Cook Out. Nothing spectacular. This one is a goto stop for me in Shelby when headed to or from Asheville. There is literally NO parking and the drive thru can prove challenging to get in and out of just based on how it's positioned on the street. Like most Cook Out locations, it has two drive thru windows, but the run facing one another and you can only access the one the aligns with the side of the street you enter on, as you cannot circle the building. The walkup window is actually a door with a window in it. It doesn't look like a typical walkup window, but go ahead, it is. Service and food are about as expected from Cook Out, and fast food in general. I like to get my shake and get out. read more

Place screws over people way to much. A shooting happened inside a cookout in Charlotte and yet the store is still open. From sources they said that this isn't the first time something like this has happened at cookout. Sources also says that the shooter had his gun with him everyday in the store. I get Charlotte is one of leading places of violence but we're putting danger in the building where others work. Cookout says that in their policy book there are no guns allowed on premises but you don't have a sign on any of your buildings stating that at all. From one of the workers of cookout tells it that if you're not a yes man and you tell them no they're quick to fire you or dispose of you. Cookout is a rotten place to eat and shouldn't even be operating all. I remember talking to a manager at a cookout one day and I asked why do you seem upset every time you go into cookout. Their response was that they're over worked and under paid. As a manager you suppose to get your raise after you become a full manager. They then stated that cookout never gave them the raise they promised to deliver and there are new people who just got hired on making more than they are and they mostly works 70hrs every 5 days of the week with no breaks whatsoever. I recently went back to see if things have gotten better or worse for them and they came outside to talk to me and told me that cookout actually demoted them back an employee. Cookout don't demote they promote only is what they said and they didn't understand why when they came and talked to Cookout about their pay they get put back as an employee. They also stated that goes back to the yes man thing if you're not one then they'll cut you off. Luckily they still have their job and can still pay bills. I asked them how long they've been with cookout and the answer was shocking to me and yet cookout showed retaliation towards them for asking about pay raises. They are liable to sue the company because cookout showed retaliation towards someone about something they were promised and yet no deliver. Okay - one word - Milkshakes.... This is primarily why I go to Cook Out. I have admittedly not tried the burgers. The barbeque sandwiches are okay. My favorite is a Cook Out tray with a BBQ chicken sandwich (charbroiled with a pickle on top), side of onion rings, side of cole slaw (pretty good slaw). Instead of a soda you can substitue any flavor milkshake for an extra dollar. Okay, so back to milkshakes. Chocolate banana (with fresh banana) = awesome, Egg Nog in December ( would like to fill a kiddie pool and drink the whole thing), Peach (seasonal) , Mocha = keep'em coming - was accidentally given one with Heath Bar blended up=yummy mishap. Cook Out is a North Carolina institution you shouldn't miss if you have the opportunity to visit one. It's the In-N-Out type joint with a cult following of the Carolinas. How many places can you get quesadillas and chicken nuggets and corn dogs as side items?!?! Cook Out offers just that, as well as Cheerwine soda, dozens of shake flavors that you can inter-mix and multiple styles on sandwiches. There's no inside seating at this location. The drive-through lines kind of make a traffic mess at times. And the people who work here always seem to be weird and quirky. But the food is always good. The shakes are thick like Dairy Queen says its shakes are (but theirs never seem to be at the nearby location). And the prices can't really be beaten. Do not miss Cook Out if you've never had it. If you have and love it, this location might let you down a bit. It's not quite as good as some others in the region--like the Lincolnton, NC and Gaffney, SC stores. read more

Their chicken sandwiches (at least the grilled ones- especially Cajun style) are also amazing. Every time I drive by this place is packed. You would think it's a 10 but it's not - probably a 3 or 4 and that's only because the food is decent. The service sucks always! The workers confuse your order by talking to dang fast - I think they think if they talk fast it will speed up the process but it literally just causes confusion, like they aren't listening. Last night my sister and myself were in line for at least 30 minutes minutes we ordered two of the EXACT SAME tray and a Jr Tray. Well we pull into a parking spot to check the food and they forget one of the trays that we paid for and then in the Jr Tray they gave us the wrong side. I get out and go to the window (keep in mind their are NO HOURS posted on the window) they keep looking at me and looking at me but not helping me with my messed up order. I finally get a car in the line towards 74 to tell the guy that my order is messed up and I have been standing at this window for 10 minutes now so he finally comes to the window and asks what's wrong and told him, he said okay he will get it fixed. The girl who took our order and gave us the food came to the window and RUDELY said "this window is closed" and I told her that our order was wrong and that he was fixing it she then slammed the window shut and started running her mouth about me and rolling her eyes to her co workers.
