I never went inside, I had the food delivered so I can't speak about the ambiance. However...I got the shrimp platter and Jesus Christ it was THE best calabash shrimp I've ever had in my life. The hush puppies were perfectly sweet, and the coleslaw was fresh, creamy and crunchy, and the okra was reminiscent of a time when you were a kid and grandma would make it fresh. Some friends told us we should try Chicken Ranch so we did. The building itself needs work but don't let that deter you. The food here is amazing. There were only three people working and the young cashier was so sweet. I ordered a foot-long hotdog with onion rings and my husband ordered 12 wings: 6 mild and 6 medium. We got our drinks and sat down. The Cook came out and said the mild and medium are the same thing and my husband said that's fine. Not really sure why they have mild and medium on the menu if it's the same thing, lol. The girl who brought out our food had no personality and didn't even speak, but the food speaks for itself. The hotdog was so good. The onion rings were crispy and just perfect. My husband loved the wings. He scarfed those things down. I tried one and they were so good. We will definitely be back to try everything on the menu and try all the different flavors of wings. read more

Food - I had a chicken Philly and it was fine. However, my wife have the fried chicken and it had been fried in the same oil used for frying fish and it tasted of fish. Cole slaw was mediocre at best. Service- 5/5 quick service. Ambiance- 1/5 this is in a former Taco Bell location and has seen better days. There was exposed plywood and missing drywall overhead. The men's room needs a deep clean. I hate to think what the kitchen looks like. Their menu is probably overly broad to do all dishes well. I don't know if North Carolina posts health score, but if they do I did not see one posted in the lobby. I did see a frame that was empty near the soft drink dispenser. read more

New to area and wanted some chicken tenders. Looked for restaurants close to my location and found this place. Reviews are mixed but mostly good. We decided to give it a try. The building has issues, but....the food was great! The tenders were real chicken (not pressed chicken pieces) with a light breading. They were the best I've had in a long time!! My husband got wings and was excited to be able to get all flats. He really liked them. Also had house made chips...crispy with good seasoning. After being on hold for over 7 minutes and on my my way to KFC when they finally took me off hold and I placed my order. When I got there not one car in the parking lot. Today for lunch, I tried the Chicken Ranch, which we went to after seeing after a picture of a mammoth burger online. We were surprised upon pulling into the parking lot at the prime of lunch, that there was only one car. My co-workers and I usually judge the quality of place by how busy it is. The rule of thumb being, the busier it is, the better the food. As we approached the door, it was evident that we would have the whole place to ourselves. Looking over the menu placed above the counter provided a wide array of choices ranging from burgers to chicken to seafood and even gyros. I'm not really sure why they have so much for a fast food joint, but it may do them some good to cut back on the options and concentrate on a few of their core items moving forward. My excited co-worker ordered the cannonball, which is a burger coming in at just over 12" in size. This is a monument to fast food! It has a full burger patty, chicken fingers, fried onion rings, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo, and ranch dressing. The sheer size is indeed a novelty and they could definitely make quite an experience out of ordering one. The lady behind the counter was soft spoken and very polite. After ordering, she brought out our food to us one-by-one as they were created in the kitchen. I personally ordered The Earth Mover, which was a larger burger patty (6 oz) with lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a sesame seed bun. It came with a hearty side of french fries and I sprinkled on a sort of spicy old bay seasoning found on the table, which I think is for the fried seafood selections. The burger tasted good, sort of a mixture between a beef burger patty and a hint of sausage. Overall, the chicken is good - moist with not too much breading according to my friend, from what I saw it definitely looked like the way to go. I hope they can work on getting more patrons and spreading the word. With a huge burger like the cannonball, they definitely have a shot of gaining locally fame. read more

We just ate at Chicken Ranch for the first time and LOVED it! I read a lot of reviews before going, and a lot of them were bad; but there were a lot of good ones too, so we decided to try it for ourselves. We were very pleasantly surprised! My husband got the Carolina cheeseburger. He said it was really good except the patty could have been a little thicker. My daughter and I got the 2 piece chicken dinner; thigh and leg. The chicken was great! I loved the potato wedges and cole slaw too. I also got a 6 piece butterfly shrimp and that was also excellent. We will definitely be ordering from here again soon! This place was good but it was not amazing like yelp says. The place is a drive thru but they have a huge sign that encourages tips which makes me annoyed since it's a drive thru. It's a very blatant in your face sign. Cheap prices for food. Food isn't really fast food so It takes a long time even though you're in a drive thru. It was super hot though. Fries were super hot but no salt. Gyro was OK but not that great and they didn't have any feta for sale. Average at best read more

Everything fried was good tasting. That's the best compliment I can give as the building is in need of repair. The roof was leaking as we ate there, the booth was dirty and had to be wiped down by us before sitting to eat. The salad we had was pretty mediocre and the clientele eating there was pretty rough. While staying in Shelby, we decided to try out The Chicken Ranch for a late dinner. I think the place used to be a Taco Bell before. This locally owned fast casual eatery offers burgers, wings, subs, wraps, gyros, salads, sandwiches, hot dogs, seafood, chicken, fried foods, and dinner plates. Pepsi fountain drinks offered here.The place is order at the counter, plus a drive-thru window too. My friend ordered a Hamburger (with lettuce, tomato, mayo) with Fries ($3.79) and a Small Diet Pepsi ($1.39) and I ordered a Fried Catfish (3 pc) Dinner with Homemade Chips & Cole Slaw ($8.99), a side of Mac & Cheese ($1.75) and water. I was the last customer of the night and I gave them exact change as they were already closing out the registers and was given free fountain soda, bonus! The hamburger was a good size and cooked perfectly. The crinkle cut fries were crispy, deep fried golden and seasoned. The catfish dinner was surprisingly and ridiculously HUGE, 3 HUGE long pieces of deep fried catfish with a heaping portion of crunchy deep fried potato chips. The catfish was hot and had a soft texture and the breading outside was crunchy and slightly greasy, The side of cole slaw (minced cabbage) was milky and sweet tasting, The mac & cheese (orange cheese) was the standard kind,macaroni cooked very soft.I barely finished the 3 HUGE catfish pieces and saved most of the chips for a later snack. A day later, the chips were still crunchy to eat. Overall, the food we had was very good and priced very reasonably. $9.65 with tax for a generous sized fried catfish dinner was a bargain! I was very impressed with the portion of food and quality too. The staff here was cleaning up the store getting ready to close as we finished our dinners. I tried Chicken Ranch for the first time today. My fiancé and I tried the wings and they had the perfect crispiness factor! I had the garlic parmesan wings. They had a lot of butter and flavor. Charles, the cook, did an amazing job and the food came out very quickly. Starla, the woman in front, was extremely polite and welcoming. The place was also noticeably very clean. I wanted to like it. The staff was friendly. The restaurant was filthy, tables, floors, seats tacky to the touch. The smell was awful like burnt grease, I can now smell it on my clothing. The food... husband got livers and fries, they were bad, had a horrible taste. I got crab legs with potatoes and corn. The corn was great, potatoes had potential but under cooked and the crab was okay, it was a little dry and hard to get the meet out with just a fork. I also like mine with the drawn butter but I guess that was not an option. We also got homemade chips that tasted like they were prepared last week. We had a great experience from beginning to end at The Chicken Ranch. Our service was courteous, quick and accurate. Our food was delicious -- including my burger and fries, as well as my wife's gyro and fries, and her side order of chicken livers. Portions were very generous, and everything came out hot and fresh! The fries were so good! Hot and crispy on the outside, potatoey on the inside. I dare say they were the best fries I've had in Shelby! I liked that I heard my burger hit the grill the minute I ordered it, and I could tell it was freshly prepared. My wife has been wanting a great local place to get a gyro. The lamb here was flavorful, the pita was soft and fresh, and the tzatziki so fresh and delicious. She basically said this after eating one here: It kicks the pants off Showmars! We paid just $19 for our plates, the extra side and two drinks. We were impressed and will be back to try other plates! As an extra FYI: All our food came in to-go boxes, which made it easy to take home our leftovers because we don't like to waste great food! read more

Got take out from there on my way thru town. Decided to try a local place rather than the chains... The man at the counter was a very polite and friendly blue haired gentleman - he was great. No complaints about the service. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger, a hotdog and the leg/thigh two piece fried chicken dinner - all to-go. The food was ready very quickly and I was on my way down the road in no time. When I opened the bad I discovered the chicken was placed in the Styrofoam while it was too hot, it had literally burnt holes thru the top of the box. And, presumably, baked melted foam to parts of my chicken. I decided to let the chicken cool off a bit. The burger was lackluster... It needed salt and I could not taste the bacon. The bun was fresh, soft but overall it lacked flavor and fat. The hotdog was the worst I had ever had... Obviously left in a pot of water for way too long. It was waterlogged, gushy and again lacked flavor. Got home and tried the chicken... This time it was overly salted and the batter was VERY thick. However the flavor were good and if you liked really crispy, chunky pieces of deepfried batter you'd be satisfied. Pictures in the restaurant showed crab legs but I didn't see them offered on the menu. I can imagine they would do good fried fish and shrimp but based on what I actually ate I couldn't recommend the Chicken Ranch read more
