A bit of advice to Cook Out: open another location in North Raleigh. Almost every time I go to this location or drive past it, the line is almost going into Falls Of Neuse traffic. The parking lot is so small that if you change your mind about eating there, you won't be able to leave because you can't turn around. I drive from home in North Raleigh, just above 540, and the trip to and from always takes me 40 to 45 minutes - ridiculous. I went a couple weeks ago and I sat at the drive thru speaker for at least 15 minutes before someone came on the intercom. I yelled and no one responded, so I just waited. I would seriously eat here more often if everyone in Raleigh wasn't trying to visit at the same time. 2/5 based solely on how inefficient they are at moving the traffic. read more

I feel like this is more of a 2-star review, but my husband loves this place so I'll bump it to 3. It doesn't matter what Cook Out you go to, ALL of the drive thru speakers suck. The people behind them talk way too fast, the speaker cuts in and out, and everything gets garbled together so you find yourself asking, "what??" a lot. I was given the double out west burger instead of a regular, which I didn't order, but ok, more food is nice, right? Except this was almost inedible. Two, giant pucks of hamburger meat, with the shyest, tiniest squirt of BBQ sauce that gets soaked up by the bun, raw onions, half-cooked bacon, and 1 pickle. That's it! Fact: Joined a structured weight loss program to "trim down" before my wedding and told them at our first meeting, "I can not and will not give up my Cook-Out habit!" Fast, cheap and delicious--and you thought it couldn't be done. It's a milkshake lover's dream. They have lots of fancy shakes, plus you can make your own. Peanut butter, chocolate, banana, Oreos? They can do that for you. I recommend the banana pudding shake and the bbq platter. The platter is about $4, and so good. I'm not a bbq snob, just a fan. And the hush puppies are spot on. I had a friend who recently moved here tell me she had heard about Cook Out and how wonderful it is, but she didn't realize it was a drive-up only place. So don't expect to go there and sit down. Cookout is one of my favorite fast food restaurants. The food is cheap, and you really get a good amount for your money's worth. The $5 trey is a must especially with a nice and juicy cheeseburger. I would always recommend getting a corn dog as a side. Seriously, where else can you get a corn dog as a side? I would also recommend getting a dozen hush puppies for $1; they always come out amazingly fresh. The milkshakes are also a must try. I don't really need to review this place as others have given it the proper attention... but what the hell, I'm reading and would like to throw in 2 cents. YUM (ka'ching-aling!) For fast burgers Cookout and 5guys rank amongst the best joints to stop by.. CA has in-and-out but I found it a little over-fatty. I wouldn't say cookouts burgers are extraordinary by any means however they do have the carolina style which adds coleslaw. I didn't know if I'd like this but it's my go to there. What really draws the attraction are the SHAKES! They use a lot of fresh additions, the list makes most people dizzy (I suggest going there with something in mind rather than looking blankly for something to pop out). If the board was a giant roulette board, I'd put my money on mint OREO. If they don't list it, they'll make it anyway. Their cajun fries is a nice differentiator to other fast food establishments as well. So if you haven't gone here yet, at least stop by for an after dinner shake, they are open late! Oh yeah I forgot to mention, bring a long spoon (do they have spoons there? haha), the shakes will make your mouth as strong as a vacuum once you're done - I flatten the straw with sheer sucking power and still don't get any, hope that isn't misconstrued as TMI. read more

I am blown away by their ability to sell you a meal box which contains a burger and two sides. These sides range anywhere from the traditional (fries) to the fancy (chili) to the "really? That's a side for this? (chicken nuggets, corn dog) Your arteries will hate you, your wallet will love you and your taste buds will be ecstatic. There is something about the cook out platter that draws you in to the drive thru. It may be the deliciously yummy almost burn your mouth because you can't wait to eat them onion rings, or the to die for hush puppies, or the bbq sandwich with cole slaw on top. Just happened to be staying nearby, and I saw Cook Out mentioned on Yelp! as a good burger spot with plenty of milkshake flavors to choose from. The first thing to note is that this is a drive-thru only food joint. Luckily, it was close to my hotel so eating at the hotel wasn't a big deal. Driving up to the menu is a bit of a pill because there are so many choices listed. There may be some really neat, good things on that menu, but I didn't have the patience or desire to read the whole book of options. This reminded me about how awesome the simplicity of California's In 'N Out chain really is. I bailed out of plethora of choices staring at me and just went with the big red sign's "COMBO MEAL" that let me pick a burger, fries, hush puppies, and large diet coke for $4.75. I added a Fresh Peanut Butter milkshake for another $3 approximately. The burger was great ... very tasty. The fries were fine ... Hush puppies very good, crunchy, onions mixed in with cornmeal, yum. Milkshake was wonderful - I may try going there tomorrow afternoon before flight back home to spend some time looking at the other 39 flavor options for milkshakes and try another. While it isn't as good as In 'N Out in regards to the burger and fries, Cook Out puts together a quick, good value, tasty burger meal. When in the triangle, give it a shot. read more

Being from San Diego I was anxious to see what the big deal was about this place. I've been here twice and can say that while I'm not in love with the place, I would definitely come back. Like everyone says, the shakes are awesome. I just wish I lived in the area so I could sample all one billion of them. (K, maybe that's a slight exaggeration. One million.) The hush puppies are also very good. The rest of the food was good, not great. But it's definitely a couple steps up from McDonald's or another fast food joint. "Their milkshakes bring all the boys (and girls) to the yard!" This is what I'm singing, as I suck hard on the straw to get to the thick, creamy and delicious cheesecake chocolate chip milkshake. And it's soooo worth the effort! So, this was only my second trip to a Cook Out, and my first time trying one of their Triangle-famous milkshakes. The first time I went, was with my husband, who can sometimes be on a health kick, so I wanted to be good in front of him. But this time? Oh...this time? I was by myself, and was determined to take the plunge into the endless sea of milkshake flavors. Unfortunately, there was a line behind me, so I quickly chose one that sounded tasty. It was hard, though, because they ALL sounded tasty! I also had one of their combos - the 1/4 lb cheeseburger with the fixins, fries and hush puppies. I'm not usually a big fan of hush puppies, but these were crispy, sweet and very tasty! One warning, though: be careful when turning into the drive-in. I drove into the drive-in's exit! Fortunately, there were no other cars at the time. The cashier said that old and new customers do it all the time. Very dangerous! On three separate occasions, I got burgers with bits of bone (or something hard) in them, so never again. I do like their other sandwiches and love their shakes. You absolutely cannot beat their "combo" deal (which they call a "tray"): a sandwich, dog or chicken strips, 2 sides and a drink or float ALL for just $4.25. Best combo deal anywhere. Otherwise, figure about $5-$7 per person About my ratings: Only fine dining establishments can garner five stars. Until yelp realizes that a fast food joint cannot possibly be ranked equally with a $100 per person place, I need to draw the line somewhere. If we were only talking about the quality and presentation of the food, it would be a different story. But, as we know, yelp's rankings take into account the entire dining experience. Therefore, I divide restaurants into three categories (and I wish yelp would do the same): 1) fast food and "fast-casual" (no table service ) 2) casual and "polished casual" dining (table service) 3) fine dining (linen napkins, no plastic cups, no TV's in dining room, typically more expensive than casual dining) Fine dining can earn a max of five stars. I was hugely disappointed by the Falls of Neuse location and their customer service reps, Michael and Cheyanne. Me and my husband's buns on our chicken sandwiches were smutty black due to an uncleaned grill, which seems to be a perpetual problem with this specific location. It also took over a month to receive one voucher for two meals. They sent only one and so I had to call back to receive another, both reps were not at all empathetic about my experience at their restaurant nor were they eager to please or keep me as a customer. This made me sorry for even considering giving them another try in spite of being given smutty black buns at least twice before. I don't recommend this location or Cookout for that matter due to the carelessness and lack of professionalism particularly in upper management. They get a big thumbs down in my book. read more

When I asked a co-worker if it was good, she gave me this look like, "Are you serious?!!" So, that night, I went and helped myself to a delicious (and cheap!) BBQ combo plate.
