Working right next to this place is soo bad for my entire workplace. When one goes, we all just throw in an order & have a quick Cook Out lunch break at the office. I tend to go during lunch rushes, so my food comes fairly quickly and piping hot. The drive-thru line only stacks because a customer is unsure about his/her order. The employees are ready for the lunch rush. It's fast food, but for $5.00 before tax, it's totally worth it. I dislike slaw, and I find their slaw to be on the sweeter side. When I get the reg. BBQ, I just get it with Texas Pete only. The burgers (yes, you can order the big double in the cook out tray, but I get the single patty, so there' still room in my stomach to enjoy my sides) are pretty good, but cheese is usually extra I think. The chicken tenders are pretty basic, but still good. Too bad nuggets can't be the main meal. The spicy chicken sandwich is grilled and unfortunately comes with mayo, so don't forget to remove that. Out of the sides, my favorite sides would be the chicken nuggets and cajun chicken wrap. It's a chicken tender tossed in hot sauce thrown in a flour tortilla rolled up with lettuce and some random yellow & white, finely shredded cheese. Don't forget to order cajun fries if you opt for fries as your side too. The quesadillas are standard and surprisingly great: cheese, chicken, & maybe some kind of chipotle sauce goes in folded flour tortilla. Definitely a quesadilla option is best if you want to save food for later be it the tray is too large or a good midnight snack after going out. The corn dogs are actually pretty alright for a fast food joint. I think they serve it with honey mustard or mustard on the side when ordered. I usually switch between Dasani bottled water, huge sweet tea, or the $1.00 extra for a milkshake! The huge plus to getting their thick milkshakes is being to add/mix as many flavors as you'd like for no extra charge. My friend got me hooked on the cappuccino & Oreos added milkshake. Next on my list is the cappuccino & Heath added milkshake. The cheesecake dessert is surprisingly delicious if you're craving dessert. First the lady taking order through the drive thru was extremely rude and had a nasty attitude that I'm sure no one appreciated. Then we get to the window, the lady at the window blatantly ignores me trying to get her attention and when we finally got our food she shut the window before I could ask for our straws. I think people are expecting Cookout to be the second coming because it has been getting a lot of buzz and is always busy. Trust me, it's not overrated. Where else can you get a decent hamburger with two fries and an awesome milkshake for under 6 bucks? **crickets** Didn't think so. The food isn't five star, but it's much better than McDonalds and it's cheaper. You can get a dozen hushpuppies for 99 cents. A BLT?! 99 cents. If you're broke and looking to feast, that's your place to go. It's busy as hell. I went at 11 in the morning and there were several people in front of me, but I didn't wait long to order or get my food. I ordered the hamburger this time. I won't front, it's not a gourmet burger, but it does have that yummy just grilled taste and it also looks like it was pattied up instead of those cardboard patties that fast food restaurants have. While I do like the food and thought the quality exceeded the price, the milkshakes are to die for. They actually are more like stirred ice cream which I love. They are so thick that you can barely drink it through the straw, no matter though, it just means it takes longer for you to enjoy. They have a ton of options and very reasonably priced. First, I've never even heard of Cook Out, anywhere, ever. We're staying at the Hampton Inn in Chesapeake, VA, courtesy of Priceline, on the way home from vacation and a week at the beach. We decided to run into the Va Beach area for a night after a week at Chincoteague. I digress. This place is almost directly across the street from the Hampton Inn and, on a Sunday night, was the closest place visible and open in a fairly high traffic area and at 9pm on a Sunday night, we just didn't feel like exploring much, and the Waffle House and Krisy Kreme donut shops just didn't look all that appeasing for dinner options. So we pull into this Cook Out location. Double drive throughs, the place looks clean, let's go for it. The menu is huge. So huge it can be a bit intimidating if you've never been there before, and you're sitting at a drive through with people behind you, even if it is a double drive through. So I give a quick glance at the menu, and this $5 plate thing looks like a winner, I see cajun chicken, and pick onion rings and slaw as my sides, and sure, toss me a Coke float to drink. My daughter got chicken nuggets and a float. My cajun chicken sandwich was GOOD! I wasn't expecting much. It was a decent size breast though, maybe 3.5-4oz pre-cook weight, with a light cajun flavor, juicy, with lettuce and tomato, and simple as can be. The slaw wasn't bad, wasn't great. The onion rings weren't horrible, but for fast food, not bad. Better than that crap Burger King passes off as onion rings (I was someone else compare to BK as better, I would beg to differ, then again, I didn't get a burger. The BK broiler isn't as good as this cajun chicken, taste wise, that's for sure). My daughter said she wasn't very hungry ( I made her pick something, so I didn't hear her say "Daddy, I'm hungry a half hour later.") She ate a few chicken nuggets. Said they were ok, but not her favorite. In fairness to her opinion, they didn't look all that great. She got an Oreo milkshake though (hey, don't judge, we're on vacation and she swam off more calories than her old man should probably eat in a day in the poor earlier, soooo.), and she said the milkshake was great. Hoonestly, it looks like ice cream to me. A large, 20 oz cup of ice cream. I tried it. It was thick, tasted like Oreo ice cream. All this food was $10. For what it is, you can't beat it. After a week of fine dining and seafood and beach food at the beach, well, it wasn't that. It's fast food. It has it's time and place. Spending $10 dinner on the way home from vacation when you spent like $2000 is in a way satisfying in itself. If you have a large crew, kids, etc. and need a place that has something for everyone, on a budget, this might be the place. Would I eat there a lot if I had one at home? Probably not. But I could see the occassional run to Cook Out for a mess of cheap food, after some experimentation with the huge menu. As I finished typing this, I also finished my daughters milkshake. Mmmmm. Every single time my husband or I go here, we almost always have to go inside after having gone through the drive thru or pull back around because they mess something up. The customer service is always iffy on top of that. However, I kinda (unfortunately) am never surprised and let it go because...that's typically fast food. I get that things happen because it's a fast paced environment. But, today, I had the worst experience at this cookout by far. It started with my order which was 2 BLTs and ONE Huge Sweet Tea. The cashier repeated my order back but, the speaker was breaking up and when I got to the window, she handed me 2 huge sweet teas (that i WAS charged for). That wasn't a huge deal, they're cheap, it's hot, and I'm thirsty so, whatever on that one. I asked for one more packet of lemon juice to go with the extra sweet tea and the cashier acted incredibly put out about it. I guess messing up my order was hard on her...? Then after repeated thank yous as she handed me the items to my order (and to which she ignored every single one) I tried telling her to have a nice day (cause I get that fast food is frustrating and stressful, I've worked for a chain fast food restaurant for over 4 years before) and she literally closes the window on my face mid-sentence. We were making direct eye contact so, even if she just hadn't heard me, she knew I was speaking to her. Then, after pulling away, I noticed multiple things: she didn't bother giving me straws for either sweet tea, didn't give me the mayo packs for either sandwich, and there was a bright red hair IN my tea (had to take the lid off to drink since I didn't have a straw). Well I was shopping at Home Depot and was hungry. Cook Out was right there, so I thought I would give it a shot. Ive never heard of them, as they arent any around where I moved from. The place was clean and modern and the staff was friendly. Literally, if they werent working a cash register, they were cleaning everything. They were even scrubbing the inside of the trash can lid. The food was definitely cheap. And you get a decent amount for it. The quality was mediocre. The burger wasnt great, nor was it bad. It was solidly mediocre. The fries were square cut and unseasoned. The salt, pepper, and ketchup were all in packets. I definitely prefer fries salted out of the fryer. In the end, its not bad for the price. It's been open for a couple of weeks now and it's always packed. I had to give it a try. Cook-Out is a relatively new fast food restaurant chain with stores in North Carolina, Tennessee, South Carolina, Virginia and Georgia. It's exterior and interior are nicely done. They ordering process was very organized and I got my food in minutes. I based my review on the four things I ordered: Cheeseburger, Hot Dog, French Fries, and Vanilla Shake: Cheeseburger: I got the "Huge" with bacon and cheese. It weighs in at one-half pound. The cheeseburger was the star of the lunch. A pair of nicely-cooked patties with good seasoning and juiciness. The bacon was 4 generous strips and complemented the burger well. It had a hint of char-broiled flavor as well, so it really is grilled. It was really good. Way above the Wendy's-McDonalds-Burger King "Line of Meh." It is worthy in comparison to the reigning kings of the cheeseburger: Five Guys and In-N-Out. Maybe I was real hungry or maybe it was that good, I found it comparable to an In-N-Out Double-Double. Rating: 9 Hot Dog: I don't like my dog loaded up with a ton of garbage. I just had it with mustard. It was just a hot dog, lightly charred along the edges and the inner casing meat was a darker reddish-pink, and not the nasty pale pink (or even greenish tinge) I've gotten at other places. Fine, but I can make just as good on my Weber. Rating: 7 French Fries: They were okay. Crispy and not too greasy. Maybe a tad too salty. In-N-Out are better. Rating: 7 Milk Shake: Not good. In fact, Epic Fail. It was more soft serve ice cream than milk shake. I never could suck it through my straw for the entire meal. I ate it like ice cream. I guess it was tasty as vanilla goes, but it left me thirstier. I'll get an unsweetened ice tea next time. Rating: 2 I'll give Cook-Out a mulligan on the shake. My main issue is the lack of good customer service. Both times I've been, it has seemed like the person taking the order has quit listening halfway through. After listening to endless hype about this place I decided to try it out. Here is what I have conclude. I get the draw of it, it's pretty clean inside the food is cheap, it comes out fast and if your more then one person it can mean a quick and easy meal without a large expense. The quality of the food is on par with the major chains , mc Ds , burger-king but with more grill flavor , I'm not sure if it comes just from the grilling process however or flavoring in the meat as well. This location served it's purpose for me today, large amount of food, quick and pretty cheap. I ate inside, it was clean and spacious. The huge burger to me is the best value and closest thing to a full suez burger they have. The milkshake selection is also vast with over 40 combinations. I think I would have given it 4 stars if the attention to the food prep was better and not so focused on production. First time eating at Cook-Out. Also the last. Decided to try this over Five-Guys, since it was a fairly new (to me) place. That was a HUGE mistake!! We both ordered the double burger, plain with cheese and A-1. Fries, I had the chicken nuggets, my wife the chili; and a drink. I was a bit hesitant when I saw the prices ($4.99 each for all of this!) and my hesitation was well deserved. One of the first things to catch my eye was the extra charges - 35c for A-1? Really? Extra charges for tomatoes as well. Talk about miserly. And they had no right to be such. We got our orders. Remember the old commercials for Wendy's with Clara who always asked "Where's the beef?" These burgers were exactly like that! The patties were miniscule, were much smaller than the buns in diameter. Paper thin. The cheese was melted, but seemed to be a normal slice. The A-1 sauce was so skimpy (a few drops) that I had to go back and ask for a cup, which they wanted to charge me for! The "sides of fires and chicken nuggets - three little nuggets that make McDonalds look huge. The fries were good, not as many as you get at other places, but ok. The chili was nothing more than catsup and BBQ sause mixed together, with enough meat (?) to make it look chunky - it was absolutely horrible. My wife ended up running to the bathroom and throwing up after a couple of bites. The friend that was with us had the same, except instead of the nuggets, he got a chicken qesidia (sorry about the spelling!). There was a ton of cheese, but almost zero meat - it was a total joke. I guess this place makes it on cheap prices, but it cannot hold a candle even to McDonald's - at least you get some appreciable amount of (questionable) meat on their sandwiches, and the size of the patty matches the buns, and the thickness is not measured with a micrometer. Overall, it was a horrible waste of money. We left not feeling the least bit full, but feeling ripped off. However, if you are close to dead broke, this may be the place for you to try. To the point.... The food is quick to come out for a reason it's lack of detail in preparation and small portions is why the food is so cheap. I ordered the double burger combo with onion rings and chili for my sides. The burger was flavorful but it was smaller than a cheeseburger at Mcdonalds. The three miniature onion rings as one of my sides were pointless and overcooked (burnt). The chili was severely oily and arrived in a container you would normally put ketchup into next to the drink area. I also took advantage of their sweet tea... I am big into sweet tea and have been around this country and tried it all. Be prepared to have diabetes on your first sip because I was looking for the tea in all the sweetener I drank. I work late, so any business open late I am a fan of - especially places to eat. Cook Out is near where I'm currently staying so naturally I frequent it when I want a quick bite. I've passed by this Cook Out during lunch time and I'll see the two lane drive through wrapped around the parking lot at times, I've never gone here when it's that busy but during the night when I do go it's usually only one or two cars in front of me. If you've never seen a Cook Out menu, it's dominated by a GIANT list of milkshakes. In all of the times I've been here, I've never tried their milkshakes so I can't comment on them but I hear they are good to go. Ordering the food via drive through, while it's always been someone very ghetto, has been painless. Food is quick and ready almost instantly upon handing my credit card over. Now, the most important part of the review - the food. It's by no means excellent food but not exactly bad food either. Majority of the food tastes exactly what you would expect from the frozen food isle at the grocery store. Don't get me wrong though, I've never had a meal from them and was disappointing, but if you absolutely can't stand frozen food quality then this might not be the place for you. My only real complaint is the portions. While a Cook Out tray can be filling, you have to "configure" it correctly. For example a side of Chicken Nuggets will give you just 4 smallish chicken nuggets versus getting a side of Quesadilla which would much more filling. This was mine and my wife's 1st experience at Cook Out. Our order was done completely wrong or subpar. The chicken nuggets were cold, burnt, and only received three. When is 3 the normal number. Then the fries came out all cold and bland. Being from out of town we didn't want to ask for it to be corrected due to the seemingly unfriendly nature of fast food employees. Apparently this is a small up and coming chain of semi fast food restaurants. It's know for fresh, never frozen burgers and fresh cut fries. It was pretty good and incredibly inexpensive. My coworker and I both ate and the Bills was less than $15.00. There was nothing that really stood out about it. I would prefer Five guys over it given the choice. I've been wanting to try this place out when I first saw the location out in Norfolk. The first few weeks of opening I went here about 3-4 times a week. Upon driving up seeing how busy the drive through was I was a little hesitant dreading how long it would take to make it to the front. Surprisingly, I've never waited more than five minutes getting through the line even if I'm waiting from the entrance. I kind of made it my mission to try many things on the menu. I always get the tray and occasionally add on some other items to my order. You can't beat the price $4.69 your entree (for lack of a better word in drive through terms), 2 sides, and a large drink (or upgrade to shake for a buck). Eat some now, save some for later. I love the burger(only had it with your typical toppings - cheese, pickles, lettuce, ketchup), the BBQ sandwich WITH the hot sauce and slaw, the hot dogs, fries with cheese, onion rings, chicken nuggets,chicken strips, honey mustard and ranch chicken wrap with lettuce and cheese. This should be mandatory to try if its your first time here. I had the chili, slaw, and quesadilla, too. Prefer the slaw slapped on the bbq sandwich and the other two items leave a lot to be desired. If you're in the mood for a shake, try the mint oreo shake! The shakes are on the thick side so you'll need a spoon to enjoy it unless you wait a while for the shake to melt. But hell, its better than having a shake that's the consistency of buttermilk. The cheerwine float is great. But you'll get more ice cream than you will soda. I'd say about 70/30. Tonight I went to cookout around midnight to get something to eat after work I ordered a tray with a barbecue sandwich, two quesadillas, a shake, and an order of the white cheese bites. When ordering the girl taking my order was rude and kept giving me an attitude when asking questions, slammed open the sliding window when I went to pay, practically through my roof at me when she handed it to me, and never made eye contact or even looked in my general direction. I receive my bag that has a box and a bag in it (I should have double checked but put too much trust into them apparently) I get home and open my bag and there's just cookout sauce in there. Came here after work bout 10 pm.. Place was buzzy.. Got grill chix blt. The bun was wimpy but the bacon tomato and lettuce were tasty and I got ff and slaw and a drink for $5!!!! Slaw was eghh.. Food is nasty. Items were just thrown in the bag. The right stuff was not received. Ordered Cajun fries received regular. We were a party of 7 we ordered seven burgers fries drinks and a chicken quesadilla. Everything was nasty. The best thing was the drinks.
