Honestly, this was the best Cook Out experience I have had in a long long time. Especially for late night, and the employees dealing with lines inside and at the drive thru. I had come back on a late flight into RDU, and on my way home found myself hungry. Not many options this time of night in our area, and a Cook Out Tray just sounded great. So I pulled off of 40 and took a ride into Chapel Hill for this on-campus Cook-Out, appropriately decorated with all the proper blue. Easily 15 cars in the drive thru, but I think I was through it with hot food in around 15 minutes. My burger was cooked up perfectly, topped well, and hit the spot. The corn dogs were crispy outside like I like them, and I didn't have to ask for that. My Oreo mint shake, creamy and tasty as usual. The attendant at the window was friendly, and generally, it looked like the employees were having a good time in there while remaining busy. Overall, the food was a good deaI since I get more food per dollar compared to other fast food chains. I got the Big Double burger "Cheddar style." The cajun fries were a bit soggy and the onion rings were mid. However, the banana pudding shake was good just that it had more of a thicker consistency like ice cream to the point where I needed a spoon to eat/drink it. read more

My friend told me this fast food joint is a must-try in North Carolina. We went through the drive-through and each ordered a tray, which comes with a main, two sides, and a drink. I got a chicken quesadilla with cheese fritters, onion rings, and an oreo milkshake. It would be helpful if they had signage for how to line up for the drive-through because a lot of cars weren't following the correct line and blocking the street. We came by after 7pm and picked up a quick last minute dinner. We went through the drive thru and received everything was accurate, hot, and well cooked. Only thing I'd recommend is for the banana strawberry shake, it was awesome BUT I had a 2 1/2 inch hunk of banana at the bottom of my cup that wasn't cut up Overall had a very good experience with our first ever visit to this location. As a long-time fan of Cook Out, it was always odd that there were no locations in Chapel Hill! But finally this year, the first Cook Out opened up in the Thrill and it's quite good. Converted from an old Burger King on S. Elliott Road, it's been open for a couple of weeks now. Small parking lot up front along with a single drive-thru, the menu is pretty much the same as for all Cook Outs - Burgers, barbeque, chicken sandwiches, corn dogs, milk shakes and more served up lickety split. And of course the ever-popular Cook Out tray (Sandwich, 2 sides, drink). Inside is where it gets a bit different. The reality is that most Cook Outs don't have a dining room but the Chapel Hill location does! And of course it's all decked out in Carolina blue (mind explodes). I ordered up a tray with a nacho chili burger, hushpuppies, chicken nuggets and diet coke and it's as deliciously consistent as usual. While some may argue most Cook Outs should be a 3-star experience, I'm bumping up this location to 4 since it's the first for Chapel Thrill and also has indoor dining, woo-hoo! read more

Very good basic burger with large sides, and great shakes, all for a very reasonable price. Service has been fast and friendly on multiple visits. Maybe they will add a few tables outside under cover at some time which would be great. Cook Out is a North Carolina institution and they finally opened one in Chapel Hill. The milkshakes are delicious. Not liquidy but very thick; similar consistency of a DQ Blizzard. I have no qualms driving 20 minutes for a Cook-Out milkshake when I am jonesen. The food is not great but great at the same time if you can understand the concept. For example, a hamburger, smothered in chili, served with a side of tater tots and a corn dog. Absolute bliss late at night after a few at the local bar...maybe not so good at noon on a workday. Definitely a place to go to in moderation if you are over 30, everyday if you are n highschool. read more

I tried carryout from the Cook Out in Chapel Hill for lunch recently. I went with the Tray plus two sides -- a regular burger with lettuce/tomato/ketchup (they allow you to customize these however you like) with sides of french fries and three chicken nuggets. The burger and the nuggets were great, but the fries were awful -- very soggy. There are a lot other items on the menu that I'd like to try, so I'll definitely be back, but I think I'll skip the fries next time. I also like how Cook Out posts the calorie count of everything on their menu. read more

Cook out is always a go to late at night and during the day when you need a quick bite to eat. The food is always cooked to great quality and for the price the proportions are fair. If you're in a time crunch, or just want something quick to eat late at night definitely stop here. read more

If you want bad food served very quickly and incorrectly then this is your place. Two times is the charm for me, NEVER AGAIN! The first time we got home and our food order was incorrect, I gave mine (wrong) to the dog but my daughter ate hers and threw up the entire following day. A week later For some reason I decided to give them another chance to simply serve me a tea and cheesecake (only) and this time went in to the restaurant. After 20 minutes of waiting and watching all of the kids behind me receive their orders while my (ready made non cooked) never appeared, AND being asked 5 times what my order # was and what I had ordered I simply left without my food.... Keep my money, lesson learned. Hey I know it's fast food and expectations (especially now) are low but pull it together folks, you've got literally 12 people working there, do better. I went to the front of the store because our food was taking a long time (it was 30mins since we ordered) we were like isn't this supposed to be fast food? But no it wasn't and she gave the food to people that were behind us in line before we got our food and then I ask we're my food in a really nice tone and she goes "I know we're it is" and shuts the window. This was disgusting! I went there around 12:20 PM on Thursday, got a hamburger, french fries and chicken tenders. The fries and chicken were so greasy and no crispiness whatsoever. Seriously, it was just awful. I ordered the hamburger the way I like it so I know it had to be put together after I ordered it, but it was still room temperature. I am not. Meant to post this a long time ago... Food was pretty good (as expected) but my experience was thrown off by the rudeness of what I was informed of to be the gm of the place. She was loud and rude with her employees so I could only guess the customer service I would get. I felt a bit rushed as I ordered but got thru it. But what really got to me was when I asked for a refill when I dined in, that is one of the best perks of dining in am I correct? Yet when I asked the employees looked as if they were terrified to answer before she bolts from the back to say, I'm sorry we cannot honor that request with an attitude I can barely scratch the surface on describing with words. I asked politely as to why and she rolled her eyes a bit as if my question was out of place. I was informed her name is Claudia Farr, if this is what my teenage kids would have to endure to work here that would certainly get a rise out of me like a pillsbury biscuit! She has no respect for anyone who works for here and I overheard her say something racially charged about a customer.
