Kenzie came over and spent a good amount of time evaluating my dog Tonka and addressing my concerns . I had previously worked with a purely positive trainer but I wasn't seeing results . Kenzie addressed my concerns and questions about balanced training and why it is effective . Tonka had mild aggression and a bite history . We were looking for a reputable trainer to give our 8 month old pups a good obedience foundation and to solve a severe fight or flight reaction our female Sheltie was having toward moving cars, strange people and strange dogs. After doing quite a bit of research we decided to go with Controlled K9, although I must admit I was skeptical at first, because all of their online reviews were 5 stars, and I thought that no trainer could be that good. However, after talking to James at length I felt comfortable with proceeding with them. James hooked us up with Kelly, one of their trainers and told me "you'll really like her". That turned out to be an understatement. Before we signed a contract Kelly came to our house with one her dogs and spent a couple of hours with us assessing our pups and explaining in more detail their training approach. She also took a walk with us so that she could see their walking habits and our Sheltie's reaction to cars. That session sealed the deal, and we made the final decision to go with them, then and there, for a four week board and train program for both our pups. At this point, I should mention that they do not kennel the dogs in some facility where they are left overnight. They bring the dogs into the trainer's home so that the experience is similar what the dogs will experience after training. In our case, Kelly also surrounded our dogs with her own pups that she had trained as well as two service dogs she had trained. It was a great environment for our pups to be in while being trained. Needless to say, we are ecstatic with the results. Kelly picked up our pups on November 11th to begin their training experience. She spent the first 7 to 10 days giving them a good foundation of basic behavioral skills and teaching them good walking and indoor manners. The next part of the training focused on the specific problems we asked her to address. During the entire training program Kelly was in contact with us almost every day and sent lots of pictures and videos. On several occasions she sent us more lengthy texts in response to questions we had about their progress.Finally, she brought our pups home on December 9th and spent 3 to 4 hours turning them back over to us and training us on the essentials of continuing the progress they had made. I am writing this review the day after Kelly brought our pups home. I have already sent her two texts asking her questions that have come up since she brought them back home, and she has answered quickly. This brings up an important point: For their board and train programs Controlled K9 includes a promise to be available for questions that come up after training anytime the clients needs them. I'm not aware of any other trainer that makes this commitment. There are not enough good things I can say about our experience with Controlled K9 and, in particular, Kelly. The Controlled K9 team kept our two dogs, Dugan and Pancake, for board and train for 3 and 4 weeks, respectively. TLDR: Don't let the youthful looks and relaxed demeanor fool you. Controlled K9 are serious dog training professionals! If you want results, call them! Samson is our 11month, working line GSD. Bonding, socializing and training were going well. Around 6 months he started showing signs of reactivity and fear. We've had GSDs and Dobermans before and never had any issues, so this was certainly new to us. Wanting to get ahead of this before it became an issue we researched; we spoke to other GSD owners, spoke with his breeder and littermates owners; we consulted our vet as well as some dog training "professionals". Yet, nothing seemed to help. His issues were exacerbated when the neighbor's dog broke through our fence and attacked him. From there it went from bad to worse, to the point where we could no longer go outside and freely engage in the activities Samson and our family loved. Walks had to be strategically timed to avoid high traffic hours; wide berth given when passing people or other dogs; 5 miles drives to an open field for off-leash training and exercise; walks around town, and outings to the daughter's soccer...forget it; friends and family wouldn't come over unless he was in the kennel; my mother in-law did not want us visiting if we had Samson with us. It was at this point we knew we needed a professional. Seemed simple, but this proved to be challenging and frustrating. My wife and I spent many hours looking for trainers. From the big online "off leash" trainers to the ones boasting reactivity/aggression fixes, to the advertised training offered at the large pet stores and behavioral rehab with niche local trainers...after multitudes of phone calls and emails we either never heard back or when we did, they did not want to work with our dog. We were: frustrated, sad, scared, anxious and angry...basically at our wits end, with no clear path in sight. I contacted Controlled K9 through their website. At first, I thought this was a company that specialized in military, police and sports dogs training. We went through their website, read online reviews and desperate for help, we figured...what the heck? In less than 24 hours I got a call from the owner and head trainer. He asked about Samson, listened and said, "Oh yeah...we can help". Hearing those words was like having a massive weight lifted off my chest. I found out from our initial conversation that he also has working line GSDs and is very knowledgeable about the breed. Fast forward to our home visit. The owner shows up and Samson being Samson went berserk. Yet, in walks this young guy, calm and confident. Within minutes he had Samson eating out of his hand...literally. SOLD!! During the home visit he evaluated Samson, we talked about goals and discussed reasonable expectations, boiling it down to the goal of having Samson be neutral in his environment, with the expectation that Controlled K9 will build a foundation of expected behavior, while providing me the tools and support to continue working with Samson after their training is done. We scheduled a 4wk board and train and have had Samson back for a week. It is one thing to see his progress through the messages, pictures and videos the trainers consistently provided, but having him home, his transformation is remarkable. He's obedient, focused, and engaged on walks, yet still his fun loving, goofy self. In the week we've had him back, I've walked him several times through the strip mall, walks at all hours in the neighborhood, off leash play at the basketball courts and trails, and have had friends come over to practice door and house manners with great success. I believe there were two minor incidents the first two days he was back. I was able to use the tools and training Controlled K9 gave me to correct that behavior and talk to the owner. He got back to me very fast and assured me it's normal for a dog to want to revert to bad habits when they get home. One of the things I like best about Controlled K9 is that they are not a "one size fits all, cookie cutter" dog training service. At drop-off they spent time explaining Samson's training, provided me tools on how I can continue his success as well as mentioning nuances about Samson. Their communication is outstanding. Before, during and since the board and train they have been reachable, relatable, and extremely professional. Working with them really feels like a cooperative partnership rather than some commercial assembly line of pre-stamped dog training. Conclusion: Controlled K9 has been transformational for Samson and our family. We are confident and optimistic, something we haven't had in a while. Their board and train IS NOT a magic bullet --- they break bad habits, lay a foundation for good ones and set you up for continued success with post training support. Do the homework. Kenzie and James did a great job with my dog. My husky had some aggression towards people and like all huskies, is independent minded. After attempting to work on the issue myself and with some in home trainers, and failing, I turned to the pros at Controlled K9. My dog did a board and train with Kenzie for a month and came back much improved. Kenzie did a great job of explaining what she had done with him and how I could continue to work with him at home. James is a miracle worker with dogs. I couldn't take my 2 year old GSD for a walk due to her pulling and running (and that was just one of the issues). Now we enjoy walks with my other dogs. We recently hired Controlled K9 to do a 5 week board and train for our rescue Quigley. Quigley is a 3 yo Cavalier King Charles Spaniel who was kept caged for breeding and never had a name or any type of training. When we got him, he was afraid of everything and had zero training. We kept him 6 weeks trying to get him acclimatized to our house, but clearly our attempts at training were not working. We contacted two board and trainers and after hearing about Quigley, both suggested five week programs. We went with Controlled K9 and had Kenzie as our trainer. She performed miracles on him! Quigs is now friendly and well behaved. He goes everywhere with us. He went from zero walking on a leash to confidently walking through stores, airports, restaurants etc with no problems at all. I'd like to give you the short version but there really is no short way to tell about the transformation of my two dogs since training with Kenzie and James. First time review but I had to for this one so, forgive the rambling. Let me start with the basics: * 2 females dogs * 1 Pit/Shepard mix, Remy: cocky, confident and stubborn (9 years old) * 1 German Shepard, Oda: anxious, timid and scared of her own shadow and of life in general/in constant need of reassurance (4 years old) * had both since they were 6 months old * both uncontrollable in different ways which made things harder! I moved from a single family home with a yard into a "dog friendly" apartment due to work. This is when I realized how "bad" the dogs really were...or maybe the move made me realize my short comings when it came to socializing my girls I got my dogs because I'm a walker and wanted to walk with my dogs. However, I was never able to walk them because of the constant pulling that they would do. They pulled so hard you'd think they were the lead dogs on an arctic sled team! My arms and shoulders were taking a beating. The girls would go ballistic when they spotted another dog, cat, squirrel, person, etc... This was not only embarrassing but dangerous, as I had to do all I could to keep them under control! I had to resort to going out in the wee hours of the morning or under the cover of darkness when I felt the other residents were down for the night. My poor blood pressure I also wanted a balcony with my apartment since I like to sit out in the early morning air and after coming home from work to decompress. I was never able to sit out there due to the incredible barking the dogs would do if anyone with a dog would walk by, or be anywhere in visual range. Mind you, this is a "dog friendly" complex... dogs are everywhere! Needless to say, I was never truly able to sit on the balcony and decompress. ‍Something had to be done! In came Kenzie and James with Controlled K-9. The name says it all...really! This was serious and I was at my wits end and wanted a serious trainer. The reviews were great and I liked what they had to offer. I half expected a military type hard-ass to come to my door for the evaluation of the girls. Someone with shades and a buzz cut ready to take on this "project". But Kenzie was the total opposite and wonderfully sweet and knowledgeable. She honed right in on all the behavioral issues the girls were exhibiting that I've noticed for years, hitting everything right on the nose. Not only did she realize the correction needed for their behavioral issues, (pulling...barking...aggression) she picked up on all their psychological issues as well. For example, what was behind Remy's aggressive behavior and why Oda was so anxious all the time. I have to say it was a bit embarrassing to realize me and my daughters shortcomings when it came to being responsible pet owners but, it had gotten to the point where it was out of our hands to fix. Don't get me wrong....both dogs are loving and sweet with incredible personalities, but once we'd leave the confines of the apartment they turned into the spawn of Kujo and nothing I'd done in the past made things better. But, they both had a solid plan and everything sounded safe and structured. So, Oda went off with Kenzie who had Shepard's of her own which allowed Oda to be around other dogs like herself while training. James took Remy to board with him. I couldn't have picked a better trainer for Remy. James was laid back and confident in his abilities and Remy took to his calm demeanor and leadership. She shined in ways that showed James that she is willing and fully capable to train in other areas like protection as well, if desired. Who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks?? They left as two slightly overweight and sluggish canines, which they confirmed. When the girls came back, they were much more healthy and lean due to nutritional changes recommended by both Kenzie and James. The girls are back and better than ever with their same sweet selves but "controlled" when need be. I'm able to walk peacefully and with ease with my dogs for the first time in our lives together! That in itself was worth it! They corrected their other undesirable behaviors as well. No more ridiculous barking for no reason. I'm able to sit on my balcony and drink tea with my dogs in peace while the world walks by. I can't tell you how great that feels. We take the dogs to the park and let them off leash to run and play while other people/dogs are around and it is the best feeling! We feel much more confident to explore more of the world with them!
