I purchased 400 sq ft of reclaimed antique heart pine from Jarmak Corp. for a porch floor three…read moreyears ago. It cost almost $5000 with shipping to New York State. It had knots and resinous grain, but I was assured ahead of time that kiln drying would prevent seepage. The wood was primed and painted, but localized seepage began almost immediately. I treated the areas with a heat gun, white-shellacked, primed and repainted them. Those areas remained ok, but others popped up over the next year. Those were treated the same way, but more spots came up later that summer and the next. I sought advice from the manager I dealt with but the best he could suggest was to apply "Goo Gone." By the third year I had put more than 50 hours into heat treating and repainting, with no end in sight. It became clear i would need to replace the floor (original installation was another $5000). I contacted the owner with a description and pictures. It was obvious that the wood had not been kiln treated, or inadequately so. He expressed surprise, but stopped responding to my emails when I requested some modest compensation. A real nightmare.

Updating my previous review in 2025. I'm now a returning customer at Boston Stone Works and Mona is…read morestill awesome. I did a partial kitchen reno and needed to match the existing quartz counters that Mona's team installed last time. Ran into a problem: they didn't have any remnants in that color, and I'd have to purchase a whole slab just to match a little section. Mona came to the rescue! She offered me a remnant of a different color that she promised matches really really closely the original color. And since the new section was to be installed across from the old one (not contiguous), it would be very hard to tell. Sure enough, it worked out perfectly and Mona saved me a lot of money by finding a creative solution. Just like last time, I was doing this long distance without seeing anything in person. With contractors there is always drama or miscommunications, especially if you are not there to supervise. Not with Mona. Her reliability, attention to detail, and smart problem-solving in every project, no matter how small, give me total peace of mind. And the prices are still very reasonable, even years later! Thank you so much!

He and his crew were great guys-- honest, reliable, amazing work ethic (they did our job on our big 1890s house in the winter, with no issues-- we have a very high roof, and it was a big and tough job all around). I am so impressed. Also it gives real peace of mind to know the gutters now will not rot out; they were the original wood gutters and we wanted to preserve the historic look of the house (lots of detailed, carved molding) and not have to keep repairing the gutters in patchwork-pieces.

I promised him I would have the marble pieces shaped, polished, and distributed to family members as treasured mementos of our grandparents. The thought filled him with great joy. I brought the table pieces to Stonegates even though this isn't something any marble shop would normally do. Stonegates was warm, encouraging, and supportive of my project. They gave me a fair quote up front and held to it. They did their very best to make as many usable, interesting shapes from the pieces so that everybody could have something to use as a cutting board, or coaster, or bookend, or paperweight. The entire process went smoothly, and the family is just so happy with the results. Stonegates' assistance turned what was a very sad situation into heirlooms we will all treasure and hand down to the next generation. Thank you so much, Stonegates, for all your help!
