The service is relaxed, but impeccable. It's a tiny space, and it feels like the neighborhood wine bar we all wish we had downstairs from our apartment. Speaking of, the wine, which they understandably pride themselves on, is so, so good. The selection is small, but excellent. My buddy loves his wine, and this is one of those restaurants that helps you understand why. My wife and I had a tough time making choices even on the short menu, but we shared the Dayboat Scallop, the Celery Salad, the Caramelle pasta, the beef tartare, and the Wagyu steak. (I imagine it changes often, so your options may be different when you come in.) Everything was plated beautifully, cooked carefully and well, seasoned properly, and absolutely delicious. The beef tartare was probably my favorite plate, but the celery salad was interesting and bright and wonderful, the scallop presentation was even better than the preparation (also great), and the greens that accompanied the wagyu (gai laan) were as tasty as the steak itself. Truly, the kitchen should be proud of everything they are putting out. All that said, our dinner was delicious, but so much expensive than I think is warranted. This is a neighborhood wine bar serving small plates that is priced like a Michelin-starred destination. In my personal opinion, the space is too casual and spare, the portions too small, and the food not stunning enough to justify the prices paid. Don't get me wrong, I understand that they are within their rights to charge whatever they need to in order to run their business, but I am also within my rights to consider it outside my price range for the offering. They seem like they're doing fine without me, and I will be happy to come back, but I will wait until my aforementioned friend is buying before coming back.

The sauce was once again the highlight, and it paired perfectly with the potatoes. That said, this sentiment is one rarely expressed these days, as Saint Julivert's longevity puts it in what I'd imagine to be an exclusive, highly coveted class of restaurants that have stood the test of time in the face of changing trends, the pandemic, rent, etc. And perhaps more importantly, it has stood the test of time *and* maintained its high level of execution and quality. Saint Julivert is a neighborhood spot as memorable as it is unassuming. We came here at around 7:30pm on a Saturday night. I live quite far from Saint Julivert which is the main reason I hadn't gotten here before this past weekend. Luckily, a friend who recently moved to the area was having a party, describing the offered fare as "drinks and light bites" -- code for "not sufficient for dinner" and an opportunity to find a fun restaurant nearby to try beforehand. Walking up to Saint Julivert was a bit of a thrill for me -- both because of how long it's been on my radar and also because it's nestled on a block that otherwise seems completely residential. The space itself is much smaller than I imagined, very cozy, friendly, and down to earth. We had, in my opinion, one of the best seats in the house, which was a pair of high tops by the kitchen with loads of space for folks (read: us) who like to order a bunch of smaller plates to share. To start, we got a round of cocktails. I had to go with the Kanpai Martini (vodka, gin, shochu, cap corse, guindilla), as I pretty much always start with the martini if one is featured on the cocktail menu, and my partner got the Puerto Escondido (mezcal, beet, grapefruit, jalapeño) which is a super tasty spicy mezcal marg variation. I then tried the Diamond District (mezcal, persimmon liqueur, cocchi americano) which is a variation of one of my other go-to drinks, a white mezcal negroni. No complaints here. Food-wise, we obviously leaned into the seafood here heavily. Tried to sample as much variety as possible and I'd say we did a pretty impressive job. We weren't able to finish everything but we tried our very best. Truly everything was exceptional so my usual letter grades aren't all that necessary because it was As across the board. Eats, below: Amberjack w/ tomato water, crispy shallot, shiso oil Ideal first dish, definitely had some amuse bouche qualities, being both light and bright. The fish was incredibly fresh and the concept overall with sophisticated with use of texture and flavor that was impressive in its subtlety and execution. Chicory Salad w/ blue cheese, walnut, persimmon, coffee cider vinaigrette Our one veggie of the night and it was well worth our while, fresh winter greens with that tried and true blue cheese/walnut combo made unique by the coffee cider vinaigrette which emphasized the sweet and earthy notes of the dish and brought everything together beauitfully. Wild Shrimp w/ salted kumquat, poblano pepper, pomelo If I had to give an award to most unique of the night, it would have to go to this dish. I've had a dizzying amount of seafood over the years and I've been lucky enough try to a lot of different types of things in a lot of different types of ways and this one stands out. Something about the flavor and texture of the mostly-raw shrimp with the delicate and aromatic citrus elements. Just impossibly fresh, bright, and delicious. Octopus w/ pipián verde, roasted tomatillo juice, cucumber, serrano A preparation I'm used to seeing served warm but I enjoyed it cold just the same. The overall flavor profile was predictable but the elements contributing to it were less so. The green mole was delicious and overall this dish was a perfect bridge between the lighter and the richer, a segue so perfect it was as if it was divinely ordained. Squid a la Plancha w/ pine nut, maitake mushroom, tinta, poblano The first of two warm dishes we ordered. A nice complement to some of the lighter dishes we had earlier in the meal that were more aromatic/vegetal/gardenia vibes, this dish was earthier, more umami and grounding. Jerked Hamachi Collar w/ mango-pickle mayo, lime Hard to finish with this because it was probably the richest of the dishes and we were already somewhat full by this point, but I ate as much as I could because it was just that good. The mango-pickle mayo was just sublime, the fish was perfectly cooked and seasoned beautifully -- altogether a playful and powerful way to end the meal.

I bring friends and family and lovers when they're in NYC with me. It doesn't get old. Some restaurants I visit a few times and get tired of. Not traif. The value is spectacular. I think the tasting menu was up to $62 the last time I visited (up from $45 when it opened around 2010 if I recall correctly, so the price has increased less than CPI inflation), plus an obligatory service fee in lieu of a tip. (A positive in my mind, I hate tipping culture.) For 10 or so dishes. That's like $6 a dish before the service fee and tax. You can hardly buy any prepared food dish in the city for $6. The cheapest items at Woorijip are $5. A slice of pizza at a midrange pizzeria is $5. You're getting around 10 excellent dishes at a fancy chef grade quality level for $6 each. There is a wide range of flavors, spices, ingredients, and textures. The ambience is comfortable, casual, and hipsterish. You can come as you are, you don't need to dress up. The patio is really nice when weather allows. There is enough space between tables (by NYC standards) for comfort. The cocktails are also quite good. I usually order two. Haven't tried the wine pairing as I'm not as much of a wine drinker. The service is consistently good. Traif is my standard of comparison for more expensive fine-dining restaurants. Any time I eat at a more expensive meal, I ask myself, did I enjoy the food more or less than I would have enjoyed a $62 meal at traif. More often than not, traif wins. The exceptions are usually at least 2x as expensive as traif. That's not to say there's no merit in trying those other restaurants, for the sake of variety or their unique ambiance. But like I was in Honolulu recently and had a tasting menu in Waikiki that was 3x the price of traif and it was terrible. Every dish was the same flavor, umami and salt. They put all their XP into plating and textures, and none into flavors. I was at Bad Roman recently and spent $100 before tax and tip on dinner and one drink. The ambiance was sublime, but the food was just so-so. Other than their neighboring sister restaurant xixa (similar format but Mexican-inspired), I know of no other restaurant in NYC where you can get nearly this price point for such high quality cheffy food. There used to be a few others maybe. They went out of business or raised their prices. Only traif and xixa remain. I've spent a lot of time looking. I haven't found any. As an Ashkenazi atheist, I also love how the name and theme of the restaurant poke fun at kashrut.
