We had been hearing a lot of great things about Conejos from our neighbors and friends, so decided to try it out on a Monday night for dinner. We arrived around 6:30 and while the place had quite a few folks inside, there were a few tables left and we were immediately seated. The ambiance is nice. Fresh with great design elements. It was slightly noisy, but that was to be expected. Our server Lexi was amazing. She quickly brought us chips (they serve El Patio chips, our favorite) and salsa and waters and took our drink order. I ordered the Classic Frozen Margarita and my wife ordered the Conejos House Rocks version. Lexi quickly returned with our drinks and gave us a few more minutes to decide on dinner. The taste of the Margaritas was amazing, but the size was a bit small for a $10 drink in my opinion. If you get there for Happy Hour you can score a $2 discount on the Margaritas along with some other specials. For dinner I opted for the Grandpa's Barbacoa Tacos and my wife had the Carbon Tacos. She had the option for chicken or beef, but asked for 1 chicken and 1 beef and they cheerfully accommodated her request. The food arrived in a short time (my wife had another Margarita) and we began to chow down. The 3 small (street size) tacos on my Barbacoa plate were delicious. They were loaded with beef and covered with cilantro and chopped onions. Adding a squeeze of lime and the salsa that had been served with the chips topped it off nicely. The rice and beans were wonderful. We like to mix them together and scoop it up with the tortilla chips and it was perfect! My wife's tacos were equally as delicious (slightly larger than street taco size) but she did prefer the chicken over the beef. I got to taste both and I thought they were equally as delicious. Overall, it was a hit and will likely be our go-to for Tex-Mex in the future. Meh, none of us 3 were impressed... Two of us had the brisket enchiladas, Conejos specialty mind you, they were meh... They weren't bad but they weren't special in any way. If you told me I had to eat that plate for lunch and then again for dinner I'd be pretty bummed out. Glad I just had to eat it one time, and never again. Also, they like the beans and rice and pico and cheese together, it was okay, but I kinda like to do that on my own, I'll get a chip and dip it into the beans, then the rice and then into some cheese and gravy and eat it, but they liked it all up together like some fat lipped mongoloid concocted it. That's what drew me to Conejos in Leander. After browsing the menu, I could tell this wasn't simply another Tex-Mex restaurant. It embraces the traditions of both sides of the Río Grande while adding a few creative touches of its own. Tucked into a shopping center just off the 183 Toll, Conejos welcomes you with rich colors and décor that proudly celebrates its Mexican roots. I started with the esquites, or Mexican street corn served in a cup. Growing up, I ate plenty of elote from street vendors in Mexico, and while this version comes with the comforts of air conditioning and clean tables, it doesn't sacrifice any of the bold flavors. Sweet corn, creamy sauce, chile, cheese, and lime come together in a way that reminds you why this humble street food has become a favorite on both sides of the border. For my entrée, I ordered the birria quesadilla. Birria has become one of Austin's hottest food trends, but Conejos does it justice. Tender, slow-braised beef is tucked inside a flour tortilla that's griddled until crisp, with cheese caramelized along the outside rather than simply melted within. Served alongside rice and beans, it strikes that familiar balance between traditional Mexican cooking and the hearty Tex-Mex comfort many of us grew up enjoying. Every bite felt both familiar and refreshingly different. The hospitality matched the food. I asked for recommendations, and the staff took the time to explain the menu with genuine enthusiasm instead of rushing me through the line. The owners also operate the neighboring Rabbit Hole bar, carrying the rabbit theme from one business to the next. Very lively and packed for a Sunday lunch. Waited for about 10 minutes and got our table. The staff were friendly and attentive to answer our questions and to take our order. The food did take a while to arrive especially the cheese quesadillas for my kid. We ordered a steak and eggs and a barbacoa benny. The flavors were excellent and we enjoyed our dishes. Conejos is my new favorite spot for Mexican. Lots of options to choose from- we have really enjoyed the tacos and tostadas. Love the fresh salsas they bring out with chips to start. They also serve brunch on the weekend which is amazing and so delicious. Not a traditional Tex-Mex menu but a little more upscale. The one downside is that it is very loud inside at this location but there is the option to sit outside. Conejos is doing a lot right and I look forward to going again. Actually - negative -10 I fully expected all Mexican restaurants to be full to overflowing. Sadly -I think the only way we could have gotten seated today was to arrive at 11 for lunch and eat right thru dinner. I'm so disappointed. When we arrived at 5:00pm it was full inside & out. Sadly after asking we were told 25-30". I didn't know then that that is a "standardized" answer but that became evident after standing across from the hostess stand for an hour. I do understand there is no way to tell how long diners will be-it's a guesstimate usually based on average movement + holiday traffic in the establishment. I do have an expectation based on being in my 70's and having experienced hundreds of waits. Great if your seated early-fine if ontime- acceptable at 5-10" over the estimate. Questionable knowledge of their job at 15-20" over and anything 30" & over unacceptable. I began studying the activity. In the hour I stood there I observed 2 vacant tables, and only 4 tables flipped and cleared. A total of 6 parties were seated. 1party was given a table out of turn. I guess they knew one of the 2 hostesses. My perception is that the kitchen was slow getting out the food. All the waitstaff was incredibly patient -and working their tails off. I decided to check on our seating status (we had pager #11). There were still 6 parties ahead of us. No way was I going to wait another hour or more. So disappointing. Never again. read more

Walking in and get hit by the wall art, the bar, and the vibe, this place delivers on drinks and food as well. Also, make a reservation as this placed is packed during popular hours. Didn't hang out long at the bar until reservations came up, service was good throughout. Had the Conejo Crispy Short Rib Quesadilla-Birrias and the Bobby's Gringo Tacos. Both were delicious. The chef here knows his stuff. After so many blah Mexican style restaurants serving steam table food, it's refreshing to come across a place that delivers food with some artistry and thought in it. The restaurant was very busy, and the wait for indoor seating was fairly long, although outdoor seating was available immediately. Unfortunately, the food was disappointing. New addition to the Lucky Rabbit string of bars. We really enjoy the OG bar in Jonestown and this could be number 2. If you ate not in the mood for TexMex their sister bar the Rabbit Hole is next door. Service at the bar was excellent and our Mex Martoonis were on par with other TexMex restaurants. My green chili enchiladas could have been more spicy but the beans and rice were excellent. There is a full bar with some interesting tequila options that I'll have to pursue on a non school night. Super excited to see a new place to try! We stopped in and were seated right away. The decor is nice, love the mural and that Selena is on the wall! We had a bit of wait before our server came, she appeared to be taking phone orders. I'm not sure when they opened so don't know if they are in a soft opening status. We did notice the menu said "Limited Opening Menu". Chips and salsa are not brought automatically to the table as per standard in other establishments. You do have the option to order from a selection of salsa, queso and guacamole. We ordered Lonestar Green Chili Queso. It came on a flat tray with what seems like homemade chips. The queso was fantastic, we requested more chips! For dinner we ordered Chicken Fajitas and Crispy Short rib Birria tacos. Both plates were fantastic. The meat for both was flavored superb! The beans were great, the tortillas and guacamole stood out to me. For dessert we ordered the Jack Rabbit Churros. Mouth watering good...if you go you have to get these. Do yourself a favor! As we were eating dinner it got busier and a bit louder, but not terrible. We were able to hear ourselves in conversation easily. We found the tables and chairs very comfortable. The vibe is definitely more catered to the bar vibe than family vibe- hence the loud music. The food was pretty good for Tex-Mex, better than most around here that just drown everything in orange cheese. The brisket enchiladas were my favorite- the meat was super tender. The sauces needed a bit more flavor- they were a bit bland. The stuffed chicken was good as well- stuffed with cheese and poblano and onion. The rice was pretty good, but nothing out of this world. The salad wasn't as dense as I would have liked it to be for $16. It needed more crunch maybe some cabbage to enhance. It was very lightly dressed- I asked for more. The chicken and bacon were good- but I don't think I would order the salad again. The tacos were a bit bland, they needed a bit more seasoning to take it to the next level. I would recommend the enchiladas and stuffed chicken. I wasn't a fan of the chips- they seem store bought. We may be back again- would love to see some more variety for the future. How this place is in business I have no idea. To compare it to Taco Bell is a disservice to Taco Bell. The food is below basic. My guess is every single ingredient is purchased by a 3rd party. The chips taste like cheap cafeteria bagged chips. The portion size for the cost is absolutely comical. We had a great experience from the moment we walked in. We were seated right away and the atmosphere was clean, bright and beautifully decorated. It was also nice to see the manager, actively present and helping keep things running smoothly. The food was excellent. I have very mixed feelings about Conejos, so I think I'll have to come back and give them another try. Some things were really good and some things were super disappointing. One shining star was our server Heather. She was amazing! Here's our food ratings... Quesa Birrias - 5/10. The meat seriously lacked flavor and the tortillas were soggy (without dipping). Not sure why everyone loves this dish so much? Mexican Cheesesteak - 9/10. This was super good! It's essentially just the fajitas with melted cheese and smaller. But it was GREAT! Green Chili Chicken Enchiladas - 4/10. Not good. Chicken and green sauce had NO flavor. Beans and rice - 8/10. All dishes came with this and they were really good! Jack Rabbit Churros - 9/10. EXCELLENT dessert. Key Lime Pie - 8/10. First, it's not a pie. It's a key lime cheesecake. But it was good! Pie itself was ok, but whatever sauce they drizzled it with was AWESOME!! However, even my fiancée's simple request of bean and cheese tacos (not on the menu) always come out perfect. The flautas are so so good. I've had both chicken and brisket enchiladas and both are also amazing. Queso is great! Ask for some spicier salsas and they will bring a selection. Chicken fajitas are very tasty whether you are looking to share or indulge! The Alcohol selection is always phenomenal, Dani is our favorite bartender. Ask for the frozen watermelon margarita, even the coconut watermelon if you are in a sweeter mood (thank you heather!!). The more you go, the more the waiters will reveal the secret menu!
