Very shady place. Walk in to buy a bike a few days ago,get measured for a bike that fits me, test drive it, and love it! Go back today to buy the bike, and out of nowhere the sticker price on the bike is $54 higher than it was a few days ago. It was never on sale and there was never a promotion. When I mentioned, to the guy, that I had been in a few days ago and the bike was $325, he told me "we have been selling a lot of these, and there's nothing I can do". So basically they started getting busy and decided to raise the price of the bike because people were buying it. That is definitely no way to run a business. Very disappointed in this. Recently I decided to get my bike fixed up since I had neglected it by leaving it outside all winter. I went to my usual place and received the usual pretentious attitude from the workers there and decided that they didn't deserve my business anymore. A quick yelp search showed me that comrade cycles was right around the corner from my apartment so I decided to give it a try. Honestly, I made a yelp account just to give these guys a review. From the moment I first walked in and each time I've returned since they've been super cool and helpful. Prices are great and from looking around a little bit it seems that they have a really good retail stock too. I've only really dealt with Jesse since going but have talked to the other guys as well and they're all super friendly. The guys at Comrade Cycles are quite simply, great. I've dealt mostly with Bailey but Brandon and everyone I've talked to on the phone have been extremely pleasant and helpful. I've been bike commuting for a few months and I don't know much about bikes (how to put air in the tires, fix a flat, and grease the chain...that's it) and sometimes it's easy to feel intimidated walking into a bike shop. Not here. Everyone is laid back and really, really friendly. I brought my vintage Schwinn in to add a rear rack and was also having an issue with my brakes - Bailey took a look and adjusted my brakes for free! I picked up a Banjo Brothers pannier in the process and my back has never been happier. When I decided to upgrade to a road bike, I knew exactly where to go. I just got home with my new Torker Interurban (it's a mixtie!) and I'm already in love. I don't even live anywhere close to Comrade Cycles...I'm all the way up in Edgewater but I still think it's worth the trip for the superb customer service. Also, they sell amazing coffee. read more

I walked in and was greeted by a friendly mechanic who took my bike to fix a popped tire and remove my shaky fenders. I returned 20 minutes later and due to a rush, the mechanic had not yet finished my bike but was very apologetic and when I came back 30 minutes later he gave me 25% off for the wait. Really nice and friendly staff that doesn't give off the normal snobby bike shop feel. I shall be back for all bike needs! read more

Finally checked this place out the other day even though I only live a few blocks away. Went in to true my wheels, and the nice bearded guy said that since they weren't in really bad condition, he would give me a reasonable discount. I also talked about my loose headset and he fixed that right up as well. That's the end of my story. My bike is riding like warm butter now. They were all real nice, honest dudes who took care of my bike and had it ready at an earlier time that what they initially told me. Awesome. I'll be coming here more often, for sure. read more

I just bought the Kona Dew and really love it. I was looking for a hybrid/city bike because I'm going to be using it for commuting/for fun and the staff really helped me make a good choice. From the initial phone call to test riding bikes to purchasing, everyone that I interacted with was professional, helpful, kind, and patient. This was my first time buying a new bike and they really seemed to care about helping me get the right one. It was overall a great experience. I've been to other shops where the staff was condescending and spoke down to me like I was an idiot and was wasting their time because I didn't know what I was talking about. I have had my bike in a garage for 3 years and finally decided to start riding it again. Took my bike to Comrade Cycles for a tune up. When I got there the employee asked what i was there for and I told him a tune up since it's been in a garage for so long. He told me to wait five minutes. I waited and he promptly returned with my bike. In those five minutes he inflated my tires and greased the chain and then returned my bike and said I'm good to go. During this uncertain time for small businesses Comrade Cycles decided to fix my bike for free when they could have easily just taken my money for a tune up. I just got my wheels back after a tune-up by these guys and I had to check the serial # on the frame 'cuz it feels so much like a brand new bike. Seems like every little thing has been cleaned and then tinkered with ever so subtly so as to make it ride tighter than it did the day I got it. It's a small shop but they've got a well curated selection of bags, lights, locks, tires, tools and such. They're always super friendly, honest and prompt, too. I was in here a couple weeks ago and got a flat fixed along with a tire that was blown out. I rode it for a couple days and got a flat again. I took it to West Town Bikes in Humboldt park and they told me that the inner tube was folded over to fit in the tire.. A tube shouldn't have excess length, and doubling on itself will cause the tire to feel uneven while riding, and increase the likelihood of flats. West Town bikes added a new inner tube that fits, didn't charge me and said it was on the house today! Comrade seems like it's got good vibes, but the white guy with the glasses who helped me shouldn't have done that. I invested a good amount of money (including tip) for getting the inner tube fixed and I ended up with a flat again. read more

Came in a rush to fill up air for my boyfriend's bike on the friday of lollapalooza and we were running late. The guys did a great job fixing my crankshaft. They had a hard time finding the parts they needed for my bike but they called to let me know right away. After they found it they called and said my bike would be ready the following Friday, to my surprise it was actually ready by Wednesday. Wow :) I recently bought a used bike and knew it was in need of some work. I had convinced myself it'd be tons of work for many, many dollars. Since today was a crappy weather day, and I was playing hooky from work, I decided I'd go ahead and get the work done today. I was on my way to another bike shop, when I decided to check Yelp quick for alternatives. I found the listing for Comrade Cycle, checked the reviews and then read the Reader article about them. I love the concept! Employee-owned and operated is something I can definitely get behind and like to support. I walked into the shop and was greeted by Bailey. Again, I thought I would need a heavy-duty tune-up, new tires and who knows what else. I also knew I wanted to add hand breaks to the handle bars, since I don't feel as confident with the racer breaks. Bailey put the bike up on the rack, checked it out and told me the bike was actually in really good shape. It would need the basic tune-up, plus new pedals (one was about to fall off! I knew something felt funky while riding...d'oh!) and he could add the breaks no problem. And he felt like the tires still have plenty of life in them. Awesome! He said it would likely be ready tomorrow, but they'd call if it got done earlier. Well- about 3 hours later and my bike was ready!! Woo hoo! I went in, and Bailey adjusted it and made sure it fit me right, I asked a few questions, paid and was out the door in no time. This place is great! Easy location. Friendly folks. I was not pressured into buying something I don't need (Bailey could have easily sold me new tires, but was honest and let me know my I didn't need them). I didn't feel stupid asking my questions. And I think the price is totally reasonable. For all that I had done- tune-up, new hand breaks + install, new pedals + install, and fitting = 120$. The bike rides nice and smooth. I am a very happy customer and will definitely return!! read more

He took the time to go over several options with us, explaining the benefits and tradeoffs of each, and unlike many bike shops in the area, let us each take a few bikes out for a test ride. Once we selected and paid for our bikes and locks, he even installed our lock holders at no additional cost. This place is so good, that despite the fact that both myself and my girlfriend are bike mechanics, I'll take my bikes here. Funny right? I come here when I don't own the obscure tool needed for a repair, or when it's something I don't quite trust myself with. I think that the employees are all part-owners of some sort, and are thus personally invested in the shop and helping you with excellent service. Every employee is extremely knowledgeable here, and will help you to the fullest extent.
