With the popularity of bicycles on the rise, it is nice to have a full service repair shop. Uptown Bikes looks like it came out of a Scorsese movie near a well worn corner with a massive elevated overhead. Their sign is spartan and the interior has that rubber + oil aroma. Solid place to get your bike serviced. Getting an appointment in the springtime will take some time, so call ahead for an appointment. I'm only giving 4 instead of 5 because while the tech texted me some updates, I never got responses. I'm ok with taking an extra day, but why bother asking for a response? Update: someone from the shop texted me after seeing my review and apologized for missing my questions and also thanking me for the review. I think that's some great customer service and I appreciate that they acknowledged my concerns. Summer is obviously a busy time for a bike shop so taking the time to do that meant a lot to me sooooo, upgrading to 5 stars. read more

I'm a bike noob. I don't know all the different grades of parts by heart the way an avid biker might. After years of riding mountain bikes a friend sold me a Trek road bike and of course I quickly popped some spokes on the rear rim. Came in here to have the rim rebuilt. They seemed to do a five star job. But a month later when the friend I bought the bike from saw the rim, he asks "what happened to the Dura Ace hub?" When they rebuilt the wheel, that Uptown Bikes employee apparently decided they needed the Dura Ace hub more than I did. This was a couple years ago. Maybe they've hired some better employees since then. Since then I take my bicycle maintenance needs elsewhere. read more

These guys are amazing! If you can't drop your bike off at this location; they have another store located by CTA Argyle, which isn't far, but the only con, is that the CTA Argyle location isn't open daily like this location. Not much of a bike selection, but the bikes that they do have are very affordable. Their repairs are very affordable as well. I've stopped here a few times in the past to look at bikes, or to put air in my tires, but this time i needed a minor repair on my bike. It took them over an hour, but that is because this location gets alot of customers, which isn't bad timing considering the little manpower they have. After riding my bike, i noticed a huge difference in the feel of my bike, and the decreased grinding sound of my bike. They replaced my old worn out tire with a continental ultra sport tire, and i most definitely can feel a difference. The repairer also mentioned putting oil on my chain, which is probably the reason why the noise is gone. Im very excited to have my bike back; even though I've only been out of commission for only two days, hehe. These guys totally took care of me, and made my "2003 Giant TCR Composite 1" feel like new again. read more

I've been on the hunt for a new bike for a while now. Hunt is probably too strong a word since up until this weekend I've never done anything to facilitate acquiring a bike (unless talking about it counts). With my Sunday wide open for a change I decided it was time to take action and stop whining about wanting/needing a bike and get one. I'm sort of in between jobs (read: semi-employed) so I didn't want to spend an arm and a leg, I just wanted something decent I could ride around on. My first step was to do a little recon; after discovering the police bike auction was the day before and the next one wasn't for a month I turned to Craigslist and then to Yelp. With a list of bike shops in hand I set off to find a bike. My first stop was Play It Again Sports, which I left disappointed. Their bikes in my target price range were rusty, old, and looked like they needed a lot of work; the nicer ones seemed way overpriced - are Raleigh Hybrid's a deal at $500?! Fortunately, my next stop was Uptown Bikes where I met Pete... Pete was a superstar from the moment we met! I explained what I wanted and that I didn't want to pay an arm and a leg. The first bike he selected was perfect, it was a bit more than I wanted to spend but I think my target price was unrealistic for exactly what I wanted. He went through the features and explained what type of riding it was ideal for. My bony ass thanks him for selecting a bike with a cushy, suspension saddle, it will make riding around much more enjoyable. Before I committed to buying the bike Pete insisted I took it out for a spin and that the fit was right. Before I left he made sure I knew how to operate the quick release levers, lock and cable my bike properly, and helped me load it in my car. I'm highly doubtful I would have got the same level of knowledge and service at Play It Again. The shop is small, they make use of the small space by suspending the majority of the bikes; they also sells used bike parts and have a free air pump. Seeing as it was nice Sunday afternoon the store was bustling, but the staff was friendly, making sure that all customers were being serviced. Everyone on staff wears mechanics shirts with their names on them because they not only sell bikes, but work on them too. This put me at ease knowing I wouldn't leave with the wrong bike or more bike than I needed. Bottom line: Knowledgeable, friendly staff; reasonable prices; and great service. I never felt like I was getting the hard sell, I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a bike. TIP: New bikes come with a free water bottle cage, kickstand and 30-day tune up. UPDATE: When I went in for my tune up, they couldn't have been nicer. There was a problem with one of the shifters that they replaced and warrantied for free! read more

The shop is awesome, for so many reasons! Maria, Leah, and all of the people who work here know their clients. Even though it will be far in between visits, I am greeted by name whenever I come in. I bought a refurbished bike from them a few years ago, and they have helped me keep it running smoothly, and always take the time to answer my questions. Like this bike shop. I was using a place closer to home, but they are nicer at uptown. These folks have done a good amount of work for me and done it inexpensively and quickly. The only exception to that was when a part had to be ordered. When I had to bring the bike back one time with a problem, they fixed it without charging for labor even though it wasn't their fault. The bike accessories sold there seem to be expensive. I have not priced the bicycles. My only issue with uptown are it's hours. 11:00 opening is late for me and on one occasion caused me to take the bicycle somewhere else for repairs when I would have rather gone to uptown. read more

I'm fat. I'll admit it. I try to lose weight, but I hate running because I run like a brick. But if you put me on a bicycle, I'm LancegoddamnArmstrong. Okay, maybe not, but I do like to ride. I imagine it comes from a childhood spent on a bike. I used to ride my bike everywhere. I went off to college and rode some, but my love of riding fell by the wayside. So when I moved to Chicago, and saw just how flat this place is, I sought out a new two-wheeler. It was stolen 3 weeks after I bought it; cable lock cut at the Harlem Blue Line stop. Another year or so without a bike went by and I purchased a used Trek off of Craigslist. 3 months after I bought it, it was stolen; chain lock cut at Broadway and Berwyn. So when I bought my latest bike (single speed road bike), I swore that I would find the best way to secure it. So I pedaled down to Uptown Bikes (as I had recently moved to Edgewater), and within moments of walking in and describing my plight, the friendly staff pulled down a collection of security methods and talked me through the benefits of each. I made my choice, and they rolled my bike into the back and 10 minutes later, out it rolled with a cool new lock secure in its on frame bracket. And two years later? Yeah, I've still got the bike. While riding recently I noticed a couple of problems: It hurts. Then again, the saddle I'm riding on is probably from the 80's. Things are getting squished that don't need to be squished. So I need to find something newer; more comfortable. I noticed some clicking while pedaling. Looking down, I see some of the bolts holding the pedal arm to the sprocket were about to drop out. Having no tools, I finger tighten them and head home. The entire time I've had the bike, I've felt like Quasimodo hunched over handlebars that are too low. I decided to ride back to Uptown and see if they could help me find some solutions. Wheeling in at about 2:30 on a Sunday afternoon, and the place is jumping! I guess I wasn't the only one getting ready for more summer riding... I quickly explain my problems to the counter clerk, and he helps me find a nice hybrid saddle that will accommodate me much better, and puts me in the queue for service. As busy as it was (3 folks ahead of me), 20 minutes later they've got my bike on the service stand and are running through a quick inspection. I explain what I've noticed and what I'd like. Their reply? "We can have it done in about 30 minutes if you want to wait." Cool! So I wander around Uptown for about 30 minutes and stroll back in. It's still just as busy, but they see me and roll out my bike. Kate, the serviceperson who worked on my bike, runs down what services they provided and gives me some pointers about maintaining single-speeds road bikes like mine. I pay for my repairs and roll outside. On goes the brain bucket. I step over the bike and mount up with a bit of trepidation. Will it a better ride? OH HELL'S YEAH! It's heaven! Riding this bike has never been what I'd call a "comfortable experience". Now? It's rockin' like Dokken! The handlebars are raised to the perfect height. There's no clicking or slipping while pedaling, and the tightened chain is responsive and I'm zipping along with less effort! But what about the new saddle you ask? Firm, comfy, and no squishing of parts that don't need to be squished! Admittedly, I probably could've done all this work at home, but for the convenience, and knowledge that experienced riders are working on my bike, it's worth the expense. So if you need some work done on your bike, or you need a bike, make the trip to Uptown Bikes and give them your business. read more

This is a woman-owned bike shop with more people of color hired than any other shop. They're very socially conscious and that attitude shows in how they're equally professional with every customer whether it's a little kid with a flat or a retired couple shopping for a tandem. They're also home to one of the largest and best selections of used parts. They'll never price according to value in the spare used parts, but by the price on the bin. I've found vintage parts worth hundreds of dollars that they've sold me for $10 with a smile and a high-five for finding it. They're used bikes are also as good as new so if you're new to road bikes and want something affordable, be sure to check this place out. They also have a killer selection of new parts, though new bikes are a bit skimpy. Great place to get a mid-level wheelset. Just look up at their ceiling and you'll see what I mean. If you ride BMX, be sure to hit this shop up for custom parts. read more

I have to disagree with everyone else. I found the service here to be horrible. When I arrived, the woman behind the counter was talking with another "customer" about personal matters. It was obvious that I interrupted. I had brought a bike in for a tune up and to have a flat fixed. The woman behind the counter finished her conversation and worked with me. She stated that because the bike had a body defect she would not repair it. The "damage" is a slight crease in the frame that is less than 1/2 an inch long. She told me that most wouldn't notice it and that probably any bike shop would repair the flat, but she wouldn't. Store policy. I said I would sign a waiver that if the bike broke down I wouldn't sue, she still refused. And she said she was the manager and no one could help me in the store. I asked if I should just throw away the bike and her response was that she wasn't going to tell me what to do but "the bike would probably last for years without any problems" but that she refused to work on it because they don't repair bikes with body damage. I was very disappointed and felt that if I hadn't interrupted her conversation with work, she would have fixed my flat. The best part of all this is that I went to a neighboring bike shop who said the damage was not structural at all and the bike was completely fine. read more

I live ~100 yards from Johnny Sprockets on Bryn Mawr, but my experience there over the years has been consistent with the spectrum of reviews for that place. Net: They're fine if you're lucky enough to find the one nice person who works there, but more often than not you're greeted with a combination of arrogance and surliness. So this past weekend when I needed to get a few things tweaked on my 5-year old low-end bike, I hoofed it 10+ blocks in 90+ heat to try Uptown Bikes. My experience with them was truly night and day different than what I have had @ Johnny Sprockets. Scheduling an appointment Sprockets - You don't have an appointment? Are you kidding? We can see you next Wednesday, bring it in then. Uptown - sure, you can just walk it in today The consultation Sprockets - definite vibe that they resent having their day interrupted to deal with you Uptown - immediate greeting quickly followed by a friendly, down to earth, straightforward, make sure you understand what needs to be done and why kind of consultation; also, no attempt whatsoever to over or up sell you, quite the opposite, in fact Repair turnaround time Sprockets - we'll have it ready later this week Uptown - it will be ready tomorrow before noon Totally worth the extra walk. read more

After reading all of the positive reviews, I decided to give this place a shot. I am glad I did. My parents had recently cleaned out their garage and returned my 20-year-old, neon green bike (apparently I thought that was a cool color as a kid). It obviously was in need of a tuneup, so I took it over to Uptown Bikes. I was a little wary of the ridicule my hideous bike would receive, but it turned out my worries were unfounded. The guy who helped me was friendly, knowledgeable and not even remotely condescending (which would have been easy given my straight-out-the-80's bike and my obvious lack of knowledge). He did a quick check of my bike, gave my a variety of options for repairs and a cost estimate. When I came back a day later, my bike had fancy new tires and the cost was exactly what he had quoted. I couldn't have be happier with my experience. Or so I thought... I took the bike for a spin that day and the next morning one of my tires was flat. More than a little angry with my terrible luck, I took the bike back to the store and explained my situation. They took my bike, replaced the broken tube and handed it back to me with an apology (like it was their fault I rode over glass). Cost to me? Zero dollars. Just a great place. read more

It's a sort of therapy for me. Upon first glance, there is not a lot of merchandise in the store. Not the highest quality of stuff. But what does that say to me? Someone knows what they are doing around here. There seemed to be a lot of used/refurbed bikes for sale for a decent price. They didn't harass me when I went in, they just let me look around. Yesterday, I fell off my bike blocks away from Uptown Bikes. I was unhurt, but my brakes were squished against the front wheel so the wheel could not turn freely. I walked the bike over there, and they immediately fixed it for free, in a snap. This morning I woke up to a flat tire, apparently related to yesterday's tumble. I filled the tire at a gas station, and rode the bike over to Uptown Bikes. They offered to fix it in 30 minutes, but I had stuff to do, did my stuff, and brought it back later. They're fixing it over night for me for a just a few bucks. VERY nice, knowledgeable, and accommodating people. Only one very minor rub: the tire guage they sell for $6.00 can be purchased at most gas stations for less than $2.00. Oh well, something has to fund their excellent customer service and very reasonable labor fees. read more

Totally pleased with my experience. After thousands of miles put on my bike without a "real" tune-up (I have done my best to maintain my road titanium bike myself), my free hub was kind of beyond-overhaul, my cassette was pretty gamey, and my chain - well let's just say that there was an inordinate amount of wear and stretch on it (I was a little sheepish). So they had to order new parts for my bike, I got a complete overhaul, and my bike was ready to come home in four days. They were really thorough with letting me know exactly what needed to be done and called and let me know they tried to overhaul components, but yeah, they're kind of done for. It would be best if you got new parts. Definitely had to agree there. They were really friendly and comprehensive and I will for sure go back and be a little better about taking care of my bike on a regular basis. I like that the shop is local, has women who clearly know what they're talking about, and is overall a good place to feel confident leaving your bike away from home for a few days. read more

Uptown Bikes was the second stop on my bike shopping rendezvous. We got there literally three minutes before they closed. I thought maybe they'd be a bit more lenient about staying open but they were more about getting the hell out of there. Who could blame them I guess...it WAS a Friday. Anyway, so from what I saw in the 3 minutes I was there, the guy that helped us was pretty cool and informative. They had a decent selection of bikes which they do encourage you to test ride. They don't throw anything in "for free" except for a water bottle and according to this guy, "they never have sales" (lame). I didn't buy a bike here but that's not to say I wouldn't come back in the future. read more

Enter Uptown bikes. I'm no stranger to UB, I have taken my Dahon there several times over the last few years. So this year, when the need arose I once again found myself heading up the road to Uptown Bikes. UB is awesome in that the level of service on the bike is always great and the prices tend to be more than fair. After buying the bike in Ohio and having a bit of a rough time getting shops to service it there, I have always been afraid that whatever the bike would need would be too expensive for me to cover. Not so when dealing with UB. Whether a minor repair or a major repair I have always left feeling like I got away with something not entirely legal.... As a word of caution, don't be fooled by the location or look of this place. They actually DO know what they are doing. read more

I am not sure why I have not ever written a review of this place. It is absolutely 100% hands down the best bike repair shop in all of Chicago. Friendliest of staff, we were regular customers as a result of all the miles we both put on our bikes while living in Chicago. They are excellent at diagnosing and repairing any number of problems, prices are great, even bought my beloved RedLine CycloCross bike here years ago. They also sell double walled-tires and since moving here to Indy have not had a flat yet. Granted, the streets of Indy may be a little more forgiving on a bike than those in Chicago, but I am getting my moneys worth now that it is almost two years later. The owner is really nice and the staff are also super friendly, and on occasion, fun to have a drink or two with!! Just before we moved from Chicago to Indy, the staff here gave us a going away card accompanied by a heartfelt goodbye that nearly brought me to tears! Yeah, It was like that. One of the great places in Chicago full of some good people that we really miss!! read more

Uptown Bikes is another model specimen of that increasingly rare beast: the independent business (that cares). It all began when I bent a wheel going over a pothole. [Gimme a sec while I shake my fist at the heavens. Or City Hall. OK, I'm back.] Luckily, UB wasn't far away so I trundled over. When I walked in everyone -- EVERYONE -- said hello. Within minutes, one of the guys had opened a ticket. Since they were having slow day he said they could true the wheel before closing, which was in about 45 minutes' time. Umm, yeah, 100% acceptable. I moseyed over to the T-Mobile store and listened to the embarrassing ring tones on the phones (Nokia 5310 runs off with the crown), then ran round to Borders for a magazine. By the time I returned to the shop, they were just mounting the wheel back on the frame. How's that for a pain-free resolution to equipment failure? To recap: nice folks who know what they're doing and do it fast, no guff. And they actually know the appropriate response to the words 'Thank You'. Oh, and they have a cool bike on the roof for the enjoyment of Red Line riders. Go there. read more
