I had a great experience with Computer Renaissance. Josh worked with me on a pretty unusual project: bringing a 20-year-old Korg 16-track recorder back to life after the hard drive failed. He was extremely flexible and communicated clearly throughout the entire process. We had to try a few different approaches to get everything working, and Josh stayed patient and committed the whole way through. In the end, he gave me what I felt was a very fair deal, and my recorder is now up and running perfectly with a new hard drive. I've persisted as a loyal customer for years, had Josh perform repairs and bought computers from him, and sent him many customers. But today in desperation, I took a laptop there for renovating. He and his gravel voice were on the phone apparently bargaining for parts he might use, he ignored we two live customers standing in front of him. I listened to his phone visit long enough to realize that I, living person standing in front of this thing who apparently learned manners from a motherboard, had no relevance. I left. He did not respond that I could hear. I've been treated like an irrelevant jerk too much lately, I brought a potentially multi-hundred dollar job to Josh, he is too digitally narcissistic for idiots like me. This local computer store has been around for a long time and I was pleased to see they were still in business when I drove by recently. They used to be near the Fred Meyer in Beaverton and I have done business with them as far back as 1999 when I bought my first laptop and first digital camera as a teenager which I still own. Lots of independent and local companies have gone under due to the large big-box "Geek squad" services, but nothing replaces local. read more

Even if I lived farther away instead of across town, I would trek to Computer Renaissance for my computer service. I like to think I can handle most computer problems or upgrades, whether it's true or not, but when I am stumped, I count on Josh to solve the mystery. Recently my machine had driven me to distraction, trying and failing to update Windows 10 countless times. Mid-project, I unplugged my CPU and crawled through the snow to CR. In 24 hours, the problem was solved and my 6+ year old computer was updated and at reasonable cost. I was prepared to bite the bullet and have Josh build me a new one, but that has been delayed yet again. CR does a terrific job of building custom computers that will last, gaming computers att all price points being a specialty. There are refurbished machines and peripherals available at reasonable costs also. That's where I'll head first when I need any of that. You should, too. read more

After fidgeting with trying to get my charger tip out of my laptop charger port I finally threw my hands up in the air and went to Computer Renaissance. It's frustrating when you look someone on Yelp and you call them to see if they can help you....but you get voicemail twice. So you take the time to drive over and there is a sign on the door that says they are closed....even though their hours are listed as being open. What a waste of time and energy. If a business is going to be closed during regular business hours, it would be great if they changed their hours online OR reflected that in their voicemail. read more

I couldn't get my 7 year old laptop to boot and Josh quickly diagnosed the problem. I came away with a new SSD drive to replace the failed traditional drive for a very reasonable cost (plus he was able to copy over most of the software from the old drive). I got locked out of my MacBook Pro after someone had stolen it and I had locked it remotely so nobody can get to my data or use it. Since I locked it the people that got it when it was stolen from me returned it to who stole it from me and since they couldn't sell it I got it back from them. They claimed that they just happen to find out who had stolen it and I have gotten it back by paying them several hundred dollars. These people were total liars of course and they ultimately went to jail. However long story short I couldn't get into my MacBook Pro and they had inadvertently or deliberately cracked the screen on it too. But Computer Renaissance was able to not only get into the computer and fix the screen so it was as good as new he even was able to deliver it to my house since he was probably 25 miles from where I live. Initially brought in one laptop that was causing problems. Josh did the diagnostics, found the issue, and got it up and running. He forgot to apply a credit we had coming, and called before I even got it home to let us know. I had another laptop with a wifi card issue, and brought it in. These guys are so knowledgeable, friendly, and honest, it was a joy working with them. They gave me a free inspection, regarding my son's laptop refusing to boot up. He quickly identified a simple and inexpensive fix, and I had to insist that he accept some money for his work! Other places I think would have told me to come back in a week and charge me $80 or more. And it was educational and fun just chatting with them while he did the inspection. We went to this place to fix an old computer. When trying to deterimine if it would be better to just get a new laptop, they lied in order to get money from us. They said the computer would work but after taking it home it was realized new parts were needed. If Randy had been honest to begin with we could have gotten a better computer and trashed the old one, but based on his lies we made a bad decision and wasted our money at this place. Very unusual, in this day and age of throway 3K Macs, that someone can keep your hardware running. Pay the 2 o 3 extra $ over BB/AMZ and help support a local business; in the end, he will keep you from spending more when you don't have too. He will even tell you where to get the best deal in parts when he can't compete. read more

This is the second time I have visited, and Josh has taken care of me extremely well. First time he sold me a like-new Dell premium laptop at way under retail. So I came back with a broken laptop, he quickly determined it would be an expensive repair so I scrapped it. I also brought my Dell tower which had multiple configuration errors that I could not figure out, he got it all resolved and installed a up to date video card that works with Windows 10, all in 30 minutes labor. I think it's important to reward good, honest business practice. Took an iPhone 5 to Josh for a power button cable and battery replacement. Josh was knowledgable and did the work for a fair price. After receiving the phone back, I actually had some further problems with the battery that I bought off eBay, and when I returned to Josh, my intention was to sell it either to him or on eBay for parts, rather than deal with the phone further. When I reported the symptoms to Josh, he immediately realized that the phone simply needed to be restored, and that I could do it myself. A lesser business might have recognized the problem and bought the phone from me for less than it was worth, but Josh honestly told me that the phone was still recoverable. Good work is hard to find, and honest work is even more valuable. Well done! read more

I had a great experience today with Computer Renaissance. My laptop died and so I went to look for a used laptop at Computer Renaissance. Josh, the manager, was very pleasant and professional and went out of his way to help me find the best laptop in my price range. He even gave me credit for my "not in great shape" laptop, and let me use the credit towards the purchase of the laptop I wanted. He installed a program for me, showed me how to work the laptop, and I walked out of there a very happy customer. The Compaq laptop I bought is great. I had connection issues and tried to fix it myself. I had a spare card but that didn't work. Stopped by on my way home and asked their advise. I was told it's usually a virus. Thought that I'd try a different card first and bought a used one for $5.00. Same problem. I took it in & left it. The next day they called and said it was done. I asked what was wrong and was told something about set -up I think. I asked if it had a virus and they said "a little one". I didn't know that they came in sizes, I thought just yes or no. Took it home and same problem. Got my internet provider to come out and we replaced a bad cable and the connector that was fried. Problem solved. Was there a problem with the machine? Maybe not. Did I possibly spend $160 for nothing? Maybe yes. read more
