    Snowshoeing!

So much fun! My husband and I did the snowshoe and Dru Bru tour and had a lot of fun. Our guide, Tom, drove us up to the pass and showed us around the area, and even showed us other places we could explore if we chose to come back on our own. Next we went to Dru Bru brewery, where we got to pick a beer of our choice, and learned all about Dru Bru and their brewing process. After the tour, we got a sampler of all their most popular beers. Tips: the office has a large free public parking lot nearby, as well as a bathroom. Go check it out!

This place rocks!! Brought the kids and doggie by after a day of mountain biking and trail running and got a beer and chatted with Michael who was super friendly. We will definitely remember them for when we have family in town and need mountain bike rentals. This place really captures the vibe of adventuring in the PNW with a focus on mountain biking.

I rented a couple brand new 2017 Giant full suspension bikes today and met the bikes at Duthie Hill where COA delivered then for me! I had a great time and got to see the Seattle area wilderness the best way I know how to, on a Mountain bike. Luke and Tom were very helpful in making sure my friend and I got the right bikes. And they even had them preset for our specific weight/heights. I had a great time, I'll be back whenever I'm here again. GO HERE! RIDE THEIR BIKES AND SUCH!

Pricing: On the weekends, its $45 for the rental tube + shuttle. We also got the cooler tube which was an added $25 and was SO Worth it! Especially if you come late in the season like us where the river float is about 4-6 hours, thats a pretty long time and an extra float to put cold drinks and snacks was very much worth the little investment. Note - you have to bring your own ice for the cooler! They have a ton of parking onsite which makes it easy. We seemed to be the tail end since their reservation times end at 3pm. Check in was easy. They also have tiny lockers to put your keys in if you need. Their store has floats for sale and some other floating necessities. Things we brought: - sunscreen! - sunglasses and hat - watershoes or water sandals because it can be slippery/rocky in the river if you swim/have to walk in certain areas. - waterproof speakers - definitely makes for a great time! - change of clothes - which we left in our car for afterwards (this was nice because in the float, your butt is literally just sitting in water the entire time) - bug spray - might be handy if you plan to stop on land - phone protection - either a ziplock or phone bag because things can get pretty wet. - snacks - water - drinks - no glass! plastic and cans are ok, just make sure to keep your trash with you till the end where they have appropriate disposal areas. Overall, my group and I had a wonderful experience. The river was pretty slow and we had to walk one area but we knew that going in.

We probably boarded the train about 405. The train is super cute and our toddler loved watching it come by the inside. The core is really cool. Almost reminds me of Harry Potter Hogwarts type seating. When we got to the train museum, the area for toddlers had a lot of things to do, but it was all pretty hot. The actual museum was awesome going down. I always looking at these giant trains at the end to take a picture of Thomas, which was pretty fun, but also really Rushed. Overall, for a toddler that loves trains this was really fun but a bit expensive overall for what we got .

If you do go, there is a decent sized parking lot located at SE King St & Railroad Ave, and if you can't find anything you can always park in the residential area a block or two from the Northwest Railway Museum (where you line up for boarding). The event itself presents a nice variety of activities for the kiddos. Besides the actual train ride on Thomas, there was live entertainment, an appearance from Sir Topham Hatt for you to take pictures with, a temporary tattoo station, a small hay bale maze, and photo opportunities. The highlight for many people is that everyone is guaranteed the opportunity to take pictures directly in front of Thomas, and the friendly staff are more than happy to use your own phones/cameras to help take your family photos. Oh they also have a nursing station too. Depending on which train car you hop on, it may have open windows or shut windows. If you are on a train car with open windows, please watch your kids because the openings are big enough for the young ones to crawl out of which could seriously hurt themselves while the train is moving. At the end once everybody has disembarked, most people probably don't realize this but with another 20 mins remaining before the next session starts up, you can actually loop back around yourself and walk to the front of the train outside if you need another opportunity to take pictures with Thomas on your own. Enjoy!

If someone had told me a year ago that I'd spend 2 hours and 15 minutes on a cold November morning…read morewillingly learning about mushroom identification and foraging, I would have laughed... and yet here we are. This experience with Forage Seattle (booked through Airbnb Experiences) was the perfect blend of education and exploration, and our guide Vassilissa made what could have been a dry lecture into a genuinely engaging forest adventure. We arrived promptly at 9:30am on November 9th at Bridle Trails State Park (you'll need a Discover Pass to park, which costs $45 annually). The Google Maps pin was accurate, and the only minor hiccup was that the portable restroom was being serviced that morning - so plan accordingly. Our group of seven joined four other participants, making it an intimate 11-person experience that still felt personal and interactive. What struck me immediately was how knowledgeable Vassilissa was - until she casually mentioned (at the very end!) that she was relatively new to guiding, we would have NEVER known. She demonstrated her expertise through every identification, every answer to our random questions, and every teaching moment when we stumbled upon something unexpected. We spent the first hour at the picnic tables. The setup was beautiful - black tablecloths, mushroom identification guides, jars of foraged specimens, and all the tools we'd need spread before us. She walked us through essential safety tips (the most memorable being "when in doubt, throw it out"). We learned about the seasonality of mushrooms in the Pacific Northwest (you can forage 10 months out of the year!), how to identify a mushroom by examining the cap, stem, and gills/pores, and how to use the specialized foraging knife with its curved brush. She explained each tool: the perforated basket (to redistribute spores as you walk), the UV flashlight (which she demonstrated on fluorescent mushrooms - SO cool), the lighter (for the maple syrup smell on candy cap mushrooms), and the identification guide. One of my favourite revelations? The mushroom emoji is actually a poisonous mushroom (Amanita muscaria). Who knew?! After our classroom session, we crossed into Bridle Trails State Park's forested trails. Vassilissa explained what to look for when hunting edible mushrooms: ideal conditions, the importance of "duff" (that thick layer of decomposing organic matter on the forest floor), and how to identify both edible and inedible specimens. We got INCREDIBLY lucky with the weather - a dry, sunny fall day that was cold but not uncomfortably chilly. Fun fact: if the forest is more than 50 percent red cedar, you won't find edible mushrooms! We primarily hunted for chanterelles but also found Zellers bolete mushrooms along the trail. While our collective bounty wasn't massive (each person walked away with a handful), the process of learning to spot them was incredibly satisfying. Every time someone found a mushroom, Vassilissa would get visibly excited and turn it into a teaching moment - examining characteristics, explaining what made it identifiable, and sharing fascinating facts. One memorable moment was when Vassilissa offered us homemade reishi tea that she'd brewed from mushrooms she personally foraged. The earthy, slightly bitter taste was fascinating (and apparently packed with immune-boosting properties).Beyond the practical skills, I learned genuinely surprising things. Did you know that ANY dog can be trained to be a truffle dog (chihuahuas and Burmese mountain dogs were examples)? Vassilissa's approach meant we could ask random questions and she'd thoughtfully explain her perspective (she's a self-proclaimed plucker!). The experience felt less like an educational lecture and more like a fun field trip with an enthusiastic friend who happens to know EVERYTHING about fungi. That's the magic of good teaching - you don't even realize how much you're absorbing because you're genuinely engaged. After foraging, we headed back where Vassilissa shared information about group trips, foraging permit requirements, and the best PNW spots (Mount Rainier but NOT the North Cascades!). She demonstrated how to properly clean mushrooms. As a parting gift, we each received a goody bag of cultivated King Oyster mushrooms grown in Seattle. There was also an opportunity to purchase the Opinel foraging knife or the tabbed identification book. We were complete beginners, and Vassilissa met us exactly where we were with patience and enthusiasm. If you've ever been curious about mushroom foraging, or you're looking for a unique outdoor activity that combines education with gentle adventure, Forage Seattle delivers in every possible way. Just bring your curiosity (and maybe use the restroom before you arrive).
