For fresh coffee, this place hits the spot. Cans are a little expensive but overall (I am drinking their coffee today) I like the quality of the brew. I visited the 7th street location a couple weeks ago intending to buy the cherry blossom roast. It was gone. I found a couple other light brew varieties and bought 5 cans. Folks are friendly and they ground the coffee beans for me; saved me a bunch of time as I have a small grinder at home. read more

Absolutely loved this coffee shop! I got one of their special drinks, the almond butter latte with oat milk and it was so good we went back the next day and ordered it again. Their other specialty drinks also sounded amazing (they had a lavender latte which was tempting to try!) but ultimately I had to get that latte again because it was so delicious - the flavor and the coffee inside of it. They also had a bowl of espresso pods near the register for you to take home and try the espresso they sell in house. I got one of both flavors and they were both so delicious that I might have my brother send me some! I've never been to a coffee shop where you were able to leave with a sample to try at home but I think it was a great idea to sample their amazing coffee. I live in New York but any time I visit my brother in DC, I will definitely be stopping by to grab coffee from Compass Coffee! read more

I want to preface this by saying I have been a five days a week regular at Compass Coffee in Spring Valley for about five years. Walter, Teddy, Elder, and really the entire long-term crew at this location absolutely carry and curate a phenomenal experience that you will not find anywhere in the city. I worked in the service industry for years, and this crew still finds new ways to impress me. I have made genuine great friends, had thought provoking conversation, shared some amazing laughs, and started my day off on the right foot most of my days of the week in Spring Valley. peach mango drink was awful, don't get it. It was watery no flavor with chewy dried bits of something. See photo. No fruit whatsoever and no fruit juice either. Ice with dried bits. I've been a Compass customer for almost 10 years now and regularly have ground coffee delivered to my home. I also frequently buy a cup from the Compass cafe near my office. That said, I am very concerned with some of the store conditions and company policies that are driving several of their cafes to unionize. As a veteran, I've always been apt to support veteran-owned businesses because veterans inherently and generally do the right thing...and this is exactly why I'm even more disappointed to hear how that's not happening at Compass and how things have turned there. A couple recommendations: 1) Hire more repair technicians to repair the equipment in the cafes (having two repair techs to service all cafes in the DC area isn't enough) 2) Offer leave packages that are equal to those of other companies. 3) Offer paid leave for employees, so they can take care of their dependents without fear of losing their jobs. 4) Don't write up employees for wearing a t-shirt with a generic picture on it, just because that employee works at a cafe that has decided to unionize. I want Compass to succeed, but it cannot do so if it doesn't take care of its employees (who, in turn, take care of their customers). For now, though, I am more likely to support some of Compass' competitors, until there is clear evidence that their employees' needs are being met. read more

This Compass Coffee is located directly underneath my office so I have counted on them many, many times to provide me with the mental pick-me-up that I need to function like a human on a daily basis! My husband must have realized how much I have been missing them during these trying times because he surprised by placing an order of their Meridian Blend and single-origin Ethiopian beans. Shipping is free and we were very surprised when two canisters of beans arrived from their personal delivery truck at our doorstep a few days later! The coffee perked me up and their cute white box doubled as a cardboard house that my daughter has been playing with for the past few hours. I feel like I won the lottery! Love this local, veteran-owned shop and so happy to support them during this time. PS: They sell hand sanitizer too! PPS: Their tea collection is pretty epic as well! read more

Obsessed with the nitro cold brew, reminds me of the creaminess of a Guinness without the bitterness. I always go with the large because the value is so much better than the small or medium. Plus I'm a coffee addict and the more caffeine the better. I also love their dessert bars - I had the Bethlehem bar which was OMFG GTFOH good. It's like a cookie/brownie/blondie/caramel gooey deliciousness. For $3.95 a bar - it's ahhhmaaaazzzzinnnnng! Their sweets crushhhhh other coffee spots. They said their cookies are from Uncle Chips. The mint nitro cold brew is just the best. I like all of the locations - this one is spacious, with wifi and available plugs, but it can be hard to do work here, since they're usually grinding coffee beans. They recently raised prices - a barista told me they all got raises and removed tipping, so the price hike allows everyone to have a better, more consistent paycheck. The coffee is expensive, but that was really great to hear! read more

The Good Plenty of Parking. Big windows and lots of natural light. The Bad Either they cheapened out on furnishing the place or overdid it with "cool" vibe--most seating is uncomfortable stools and low coffee tables. Seems like a popular studying destination which makes it hard to find a table to sit with a friend and chat. Most tables are occupied by one person who brought their laptop to work/study. The Ugly I ordered drop coffee with a splash of oat milk. Without exaggeration, it's the worst tasting coffee I've had in a long time. It has ZERO flavor, depth, and aroma. I felt I was drinking diluted oat milk. I might come back to meet friends, but not wasting another dime on this flavorless coffee again. I hope they work on improving their bean sourcing. read more

They had a great deal for BF and I thought I try their coffee since reviews looks great. Its' now 1 month, still haven't received anything. They stated their coffee will still be fresh since its in the tin; but they don't seem to realize the condition of warehouses it goes through which will alter its condition hence my review on the coffee will probably be bad. I really like this coffee shop. As I do not have much of a physical office, I tend to use the city's fine coffee establishments before/after meetings quite frequently to regroup and recharge. Great cold brew, without it being too heavy. The downside was that I had a lot of trouble finding somewhere to charge my laptop battery and work, so I had to just go without charging, but I didn't stay that long so it was ok. The community bookshelves and general look was cool and trendy. tldr; Great coffee, price was fine and I liked the overall vibe. Recommend. read more

Compass has become a STAPLE in DC. I love the company's founding store and easy to navigate (get it?!?) coffee roast varieties. All of their locations are wonderful, especially their spot in Georgetown, but I loved visiting the original 7th Street roastery in Shaw where it all started - and the namesake of one of their roasts. Definitely give Compass a try if you're looking to upgrade from Starbucks and support a local DC company!! read more

Fact they do not serve pour-over coffee yet they charge close to 3 bucks for a drip version that is supposed to be lite roast but comes off as a Starbucks blonde roast profile. I cannot express how terrible this coffee experience was. Friends, the coffee tasted horrible (espresso & drip coffee), the service was mediocre at best, and the space is over decorated with cans of coffee (im talking hundreds). New management is almost essential after seeing this place in the shape it is in currently. I have been to roughly 100 coffeeshops around the US and unfortunately this shop would take the easy win for dead last. To the Owner: please don't take this as defamatory because I genuinely want this shop to be excellent, but something has to change for that to happen. 5 star experience. I had heard about their coffee tastings through a friend and wanted to coordinate an experience for a bachelorette party I was hosting with 14 people. Compass coffee was extremely responsive and very accommodating every step of the way especially given the time constraints we had. They can only hold up to 8 people but were SO nice and stretched the number a little in order to hold a few more for which I was SO gratfeful. The host was super knowledgeable, fun, entertaining and we all loved him! The coffee is on point, the tour is about 90min-2hr depending on your pace and you learn so much about the history of compass coffee and the brewing process. read more

On my visit to DC, I was so fortunate that my bff lives across from a Compass Coffee. They make a really good cup of coffee. To be honest, this may be the best cup of nitro cold brew I have ever enjoyed in my adult life. You can enjoy a large cup of this greatness for just shy of $4. I enjoy my coffee black, and sometimes cold brew can be so aggressive. Not this one. The mix of the nitrogen with their brew makes this a really smooth and enjoyable sip. It was rich, strong, and wonderful. My friend ordered hers with cream and also loved it. They have assorted pastries and snacks, but I did not try any of those. The DC area is lucky to have Compass Coffee in their neck of the woods. I did some research and learned that their slogan is real good coffee. They serve just that. read more

I wish I lived in DC just so I could enjoy this place every day. I was in town for a few days for a conference and even though it was out of my way, I stopped by as often as I could. They have a fantastic selection of flavored brews available and the quality of their bean is just terrific. The atmosphere is very comfortable and chic...a great place to study, read or just catch up with a friend. The staff was really friendly and since it is owned and operated by a vet, they offer a generous military discount, which is nice. All of that said, listen carefully....if you really want something amazing...go for their nitro cold brew coffee...you will be in for the flavor ride of your life. It's perfectly smooth and creamy without a drop of calorie-adding dairy or artificial creamer added. Just great cold brew coffee (not too bitter with great vanilla and caramel notes in the background) with a bit of science added. They sell it by the growler as well, which you'll definitely want to go for. I managed to take one back with me in my suitcase. When I moved to DC in 2007, a good coffee shop was hard to come by. Now that it's 2014, I am happy to say DC has more and more options and Compass adds to the choir of good DC coffee shops. Compass is the only coffee shop in a few block radius of its location so thank God it's a good one. It's in between Mt Vernon-Convention Center + Shaw-Howard Metro stops across the street from a few new apartment buildings. Compass has a good range of seating options: 5 at two bar stool tables (One in the window and one in the back), three tables that sit four each, a separate large, bar stool table that sits 6-8, and four small circle tables with bench seating that sit two each. The coffee is good (They told me their sweetest drink is their nutella mocha. I ordered that and it wasn't that sweet according to my uber sweet tooth, but it's still good!). They have breakfast biscuits and make the biscuits daily on location. The wifi is free, strong, and available 7 days a week (Unlike some other DC coffee shops like...cough...Tryst). Warning: I've tried going on the weekends and couldn't find any open seating. If you go on a weekday to work, be sure to get there before 9AM to find a good seat. read more

The coffee really is great (not as great as Beanetics, a hidden micro-roasting gem in Annandale), but the location simply isn't prepared to deal with the number of people. Maybe non-Sundays are better, but it was a mad house. Props to the baristas because my drink didn't take long at all. Finding a seat required awkwardly sharking people that appeared to be putting their stuff away. On my own, I'd never go here again unless I was just getting a latte to go. This place is all about the coffee- no frills focus on... Coffee! Love it! As others have noted, the space is expansive and open. However, it can feel slightly industrial with the focus on the hardware, concrete floors, and equipment, with none of the fluffy, cute touches or embrace of cozy interior decorating. Yes, it's utilitarian, but for a coffee shop, I appreciate that theme to focus on the coffee and, well, getting work/ stuff done... which is why most people would like coffee at any given moment, yes? It's pretty cute, though, that their coffee beans come in reusable metal tins. I wonder though, can I just get straight beans next time and refill mine? That'd be awesome. When you buy a tin of coffee, you can have a free cup of coffee in house. The price is pretty decent for their beans, but, I feel that the flavors are not as intense as I like in coffee. The espresso blend was too mellow for me. So... I need more of it to get my tastebuds settled down and content. The open nature of the barista/ counter area is cool, but I felt a bit confused when within the course of a minute, all 3 of the staffers offered to help me. I wasn't sure who was "supposed" to help me?! It was nice, but, without coffee, I was not sure how to respond or whom to pick to help me! One of the baristas/ staffers was setting up some freshly baked pastries. However, I have to be a bit snobby and say that even if I wanted to eat them, I wouldn't, because they did not look professional by my standards. True, you can't judge a scone/ pastry by its look, but, at the same time, to the trained eye, ummm... yes, you can. The location makes parking relatively easy. The folks are helpful and attentive. The coffee is decent. The coffee cup though, for a paper cup, is kinda cool! Anyone else notice that they are double-layered? Pretty cool for a paper cup! It may not be porcelain, but, this means no "sleeve" is needed. It also means refillable... heh heh... if you stay around for that long. Besides, as others have mentioned, the sizes are not as large as one has come to expect from American coffee houses/ dispensaries. I like the sizes, though. They are just right. What else would bring me back here, though not directly adjacent to anything else of great interest for me? They have almond milk as an option at the self-serve dress-up your coffee station - most places just have it as a choice for a latte/ espresso drink. So...Ohmigosh- yes, thank you for having almond milk as a coffee "creamer" option! Super cool, if you ask me. So, while the coffee isn't the best, I will go here over the chains and a few other local spots for sure. Nice location! read more

Good coffee in Shaw. Place gets super crowded on the weekends so get here early or have a friend save you a spot. I am no coffee aficionado but their cappuccino was decent. I do wish they used real cups for those having their coffee in the store but I understand that adds an extra level of complexity. Just something about having a cappuccino in a paper cup doesn't sit well with me. I also had their croissant with ham and cheese but it tasted almost stale. Was similar in style to the ones at la colombe so maybe they all use the same supplier. The other thing I love about this place is they have sparkling water in tap! Always a plus. Wifi is free which causes folks to longer but the vibe is overall very hip and productive. Good place to spend an afternoon working. read more
