This is my regular coffee spot, at least 6 times a week. Why? The coffee is consistently excellent but the staff make it memorable! They are awesome. They are friendly and remember your name (essential for a business that relies on repeat traffic). Yes they can be busy but I have never waited more than a couple of minutes for a coffee (not like TCB on S st where I waited 20mins!!!!) and there is plenty of seating for a little place. Go Compass! Now if you can start selling 'keep cups' and using compostable plastic straws, lids etc!!! read more

I love stopping by Compass Coffee for chai. Their chai is amazing! It's not super sweet and has a good complexity of flavors. But why so expensive?? The Shaw location has a similar atmosphere than the other ones, however it is a bit cramped with limited seating. It's best for a grab and go or sitting solo, but not great for catching up with a group of friends. read more

I've only been to D.C. twice, but both times I've come to Compass Coffee. The coffees here are fun! All their flavors are enticing, but the one that takes the cake is the mint cold brew. Sounds weird, I know, but it's a true delight. It's so cold and refreshing, plus it gives you that good good caffeine boost. To be frank I don't remember anything else I've tried, but next time I'm in D.C. I hope I make it back here for some more minty goodness. read more

Does not compare to Swing's. Asked for a nitro without ice. Saw barista put ice in. Asked for ice to be taken out. Walked down the counter. Received nitro with ice... Also, nitro taste was bad. Like burnt coffee grounds - maybe taps were not cleaned? Very disappointing. read more

Great coffeeshop in DC. The cold brew is on point. You can purchase a growler of cold brew if you like it and can't get to the coffeeshop everyday. They also sell a lot different blends in cool containers; my sister mailed one to me, but I hear you can take the container back and get it refilled for a discount. I wish this place existed when I worked in DC! read more

Phenomenal nitro cold brew. I work a block away and have become addicted to a morning iced coffee. I do think they need a reward program. Also I'd like to see more no added sugar drinks (both hot and cold). It's 2019, no one needs a 300+ calorie drink in the AM. But still, Compass is the best of DC coffee. read more

Their nitro brew coffee was quite tasty even without any additions to it. Had a modern and industrial feel. Bathrooms were nice in that they have two individual ones, but need to be kept a little more tidy. Great Place for a quick meeting, not somewhere really comfy to sit for a while. read more

Best coffee beans in DC. I've tried other competitors and still always come back to Compass' for the longevity of the beans' freshness, aroma and taste to the bottom of the can. Also when brewed, the actual flavor profiles taste, smell exactly as they are described on the labels. This is my favorite location bc it's small and intimate and still maintains the neighborhood vibe. The staff is super sweet and always so helpful and polite. read more

My wife loves coffee and we decided to stop by after hanging out in the neighborhood. She's wanted to try this for a while now and we're glad that we did. My wife is super opinionated about her coffee and she can distinguish good and bad coffee. She had nothing negative to say about her cup of coffee from this place. I know for a fact that if it was closer to our place, she would come here daily and maybe even 2-3 times a day. The customer service was also on point even when we came through the last hour for them to remain open. They have this really cool sticker that says Made in DC. Again, another cool thing since my wife collects stickers and she also works with elementary school kids who love stickers. We were allowed to grab a handful of stickers for her students. Very friendly and cool shop alas with mediocre expertise in coffee preparation. Waste of Chemex. Barista should realize that a brew shouldn't take 12min esp when the water is automatically poured. The grounds were visibly too fine, the pour was extremely slow. Decaf beans are known to be more dry than normal beans due to the decaf wash and dry. Hence the finer dusty particles during grind. One has to use coarser and more by weight grounds to improve the brew. But I felt like they werent thrilled I opened the subject. Result: an overextracted cold cup. Anyway i wish them good luck but also hope they listen to patrons. read more

Sometimes good to get away from the coffee chains ever so prevalent in DC. Even when you're not in the mood for a coffee, this place has delicious teas as well! I think what I got was the Hibiscus tea. Light, fresh, cool for the hot DC summers. The ambience is chill, non-pretentious and laid-back. There's even a cute upstairs. The whole place has free wifi too. Definitely worth it to check it out- in a great neighborhood that is up and coming! read more

Great store and great coffee. I love the physical space--the second level is a really good place to get some work done. I also love that they have both still and sparkling water on tap that customers can get for themselves. This is a really nice touch that makes a surprisingly big difference. Service is generally alright, but it feels like there is a snootiness and that they are superior to patrons. Today, one of the baristas didn't hand off my drink properly and it spilled on me. When it happened, I said excuse me. I expected that we'd both take some ownership for the failed handoff. She just looked at me as I was wiping part of the drink off my hand and said nothing. I'm often business casual, but today I was in a suit so this really wasn't a day for this to happen. read more

I'm a big fan of all of Compass' locations. They always seem to hire the friendliest people, and they are great at getting through a huge line of people and always get my order right. Compass always has a good selection of seasonal flavors for their coffees, and I love that they're not too sweet. Definitely get a cold brew at some point, it's delicious! The big new compass coffee in the posh part of shaw (RIP the flea market that used to be in this spot) is so cute and such a nice addition to the hood. Smaller than the original, this place is adorable, with loft seating and a nice big window to look out on 8th street. I wonder if they will have outdoor seating come spring? I'm not a big coffee drinker, but enjoyed my latte, and the service was top notch! Ill be sure to stop by when needing a caffeine or pastry fix in the hood. read more

This place is perfect. Friendly staff, a variety of brew types and a spread of local food. I had a nitrogen infused cold brew which was rich, strong and creamy. I also had a saag paneer and half smoke/cheddar kolache, fresh from Repblic Kolache. They were delicious but would have been better earlier in the morning when they were hot. With additional seating upstairs, there are plenty of places to eat, drink and connect to wifi if needed. read more

I docked a star b/c the croissant was no bueno. It looked like the ones that Maketto carries-- light, flakey, buttery, crispy. Instead, it was dense and super bready in the center. The outside wasn't flakey either.. super sad panda. For $3.50, and being that dense it definitely will keep you full for a few hours. I was just sad it wasn't as delicious as I hope it was. On to the coffee! Awesome that they have L lattes-- 3 shots, rather than the normal sizes. Our ice vanilla lattes are good and solid. Wouldn't expect any less with these coffee shops popping up everywhere! We came around 9 am on a Sunday morning, there was no rush and plenty of seating. There are about seats for 10 people upstairs. The entire structure is gorgeous to look at. I saw notices for outdoor seating coming soon, which would be great for a weekend morning. read more

I prefer this location because it's quieter and way less busy. There's very minimal seating upstairs, but same great service and beverages. This is a good location if you want to run in and grab and go, rather than park in there forever. I'm just sad the seasonal ginger lattes are gone. Bring them back, please! read more

Compass coffee has changed my life, no seriously, it has. From my first sip of their delicious caffeinated goodness, I've been hooked. Even though I live nowhere near either of their locations, I will make it a point to visit at least once a week. Their coffee actually tastes like coffee. You don't need all the extra syrups and flavors a la Starbucks to mask the flavor. It tastes good all on its own. I've had pretty much everything they offer from the cold brew to their seasonal lattes and they are equally delicious. The space itself is bright, clean and inviting. My only qualm is that their serving sizes are TINY for what you're paying. A 12 oz. medium will set you back about $5 but this is a DC based company so I'm ok with paying a little more to support the little guys. Thank you Compass for changing my world! :) read more

Unimpressed, child seating, and expensive. Their coffee and drinks are expensive for the quality. Coffee service bar was discussing and they were not even busy. Staff was not kind at all and found it troublesome to make eye contact when all I wanted was a straw. The seating also sucks. Small, short seats and very few with backs, even less tables. I don't know how anyone with a wheelchair or similar disability could really access this place besides buying a drink and leaving. Overall, most would be better off at another place. read more

This is my neighborhood coffee shop and I am thrilled it's in my area! The coffee is really delicious (roasted on site) and the people are friendly. The food choices are ok but I think this is changing (I've seen kolache a - yes! And I believe they are going to be getting items from Buttercream Bakeshop soon). Great coffee place - I really like their nitro cold brew coffee. The coffee comes pumped with nitrogen, which makes the coffee taste a bit creamier (at least until it goes flat). The also offer the nitro cold brew with a couple of flavors. The two I've tried were the gingerbread and the maple. The add the syrup to the coffee at the bottom, and then add in the ntiro cold brew on top. I've also tried their iced morrocan mint tea, which was nice and refreshing. The tea didn't taste oversteeped (like a lot of other places), and the mint wasn't too overpowering. read more

You really can't get better than compass coffee. I came for the opening of the second location and they were already running a great operation. In addition to great great coffee their pastries and sandwiches really stand out. Their whole beans are a great buy and so consistently fresh that the beans bloom with regularity if you use a French Press. Plus, if you like puppies follow their Instagram! read more
