We have been coming to Compass for a number of years. However, I feel that recent policies have brought the business down. My husband went twice recently and purchased muscavado lattes. However, both times, the drinks were underfilled by quite a bit. (1/2 inch the first time and close to an inch the second). The first time he asked that the barista fill the cup the rest of the way. She had enough leftover milk to do so but seemed taken aback when he asked. If we are paying that much money ($7) for a drink, we should get the full drink we are paying for - especially having already tipped $2! The second time earlier this week, the same barista underfilled the drinks again, this time by even more. My husband asked her to fill them all the way, but she had a very huffy reaction as though she was annoyed with the request for us to receive the full drink paid for. This upset my husband, especially her poor attitude. She did ultimately add some milk to the drinks to fill them adequately, but the whole experience was super upsetting. I wanted to contact the store about it that day but was unable to find contact info that got to anyone. Today I decided to go in and talk with the barista to see if they would remedy the situation. I was going to buy a drink for me, but I asked that they do something to make it right for my husband (who was waiting in the car since he didn't want to go in after being treated poorly). The same barista (with glasses) said she was sorry if that was his experience, but she could not comp a drink. I asked to speak with a manager, and she said she was the manager. I asked to speak with the owner, but he was not there, and she could/would not provide a phone number - only a general info email address. I asked why she underfills drinks, and she said that she is heavy handed and spills frequently, so she underfills so she doesn't spill. Ok, but again, this is one of the fancier and more expensive coffee shops in the area, so customers shouldn't be treated poorly for wanting the full drink! The barista manager is named Reese. I'll be contacting Brian, the manager. Hopefully he gets the message and addresses this negative attitude and unwillingness to make it right. read more

It was a very tasty cup of coffee the espresso is very rich in flavor. I love being able to taste the espresso well when I am drinking a latte. Next time I would choose something different I think any latte or mocha or just straight espresso would be great from here! I got the spicy chai and it was a little bit too spicy for me but that's just a personal preference, normally i love spicy chai but this one is a bit spicier than I am used to so just keep that in mind! The person working was alone with a long line of customers and they handled it very well! The wait wasn't long and it was overall a great experience! The cafe is cute and cozy with a great feeling off the bat. Would definitely recommend this coffee shop! read more

I came here with my mom today because this is one of her favorite coffee shops. I ordered a cold brew with oat milk, no ice. For one they charged me extra to do no ice because it "uses more product". The drink was pretty gross. My mom encouraged me to ask if they could make me something else. So I went inside to ask, and the guy working told me that they don't replace drinks and I would have to buy a new drink if I wanted something different. I understand that, but being that this was my first time here and I paid over $6 for a gross drink, I think its bad customer service not to have your customer leaving happy. My moms drink was yummy! I wouldn't come back here for the simple reason being their customer service isn't to provide a good experience. Also, how do you make a gross cold brew? One of my favorite coffee shops in the area. The baristas are pleasant and really know what they are doing. The inside is clean and modern design. Things I love about this place: 1. They are dog friendly. 2.They have really fantastic chai! (Turmeric chai is worth a try) It is REAL chai not liquid concentrate!!! 3. Their espresso is always good. 4. Freshness is hit and miss. I've been buying my beans exclusively from Compass for one year. I've had some of the best roasts I've experienced , but then at other times the beans have very little aroma and taste like cardboard. I find that I prefer the Peru bean and have purchased multiple pounds from them. my process is pretty exacting, brewing in a Chemex arrangement and grinding with a Baratza ceramic burr fresh each morning. Mike has been understanding to my concerns and has replaced a bag for me before. But even the replacement bag was sub par. I'm moving on. read more

This place is unassuming from the outside, but the inside is great, and they are SERIOUS about coffee here: very knowledgeable, the coffee is great, and they both roast and train in this facility. My only complaint is that the owner. He has a sarcastic answer or a downright grumpy answer for anything. For example, their bathroom is in the back of the shop, and you have to walk through the cash register area, etc. to get to it. I asked him if I could use their restroom and his response was "that is what it is there for". I asked how business was going. His answer, "none of your business". I asked if the two guys that (used) to regularly work there were still there. His response, "If you are asking if I still have employees the answer is yes." Okaayyy.... "When do they work?". Answer: "When their schedule tells them to." He just isn't a nice guy. I tolerate him because the coffee is good, but I am 100% confident that he turns a lot of people down. These people take coffee serious and made me more of a connoisseur of fine coffee than I ever was. At work we started taking turns purchasing different bean from local roasters and this place always comes up as one of the best. I highly suggest everyone give this place a try and get off the mainstream bean kick that a lot of people suffer from. After tasting good coffee, it is really tough to go back to the places that surround us. I'll be honest: I grew up in Portland, but have lived on the east coast since college (and I'm kind of old!) I visited both this location and the "flagship" downtown Vancouver location of Compass Coffee, and I strongly prefer the unpretentious vibe of THIS spot. It reminds me of what Portland was before all the cool people started to move to my hometown! Am I a coffee snob? Maybe! I don't pretend to know my florals from my velvety chocolate notes. I do, however, drink straight shots of black espresso. I have learned to search for "single origin espresso" when I travel and want a great local spot because "good coffee" often means "yummy sweetened milk beverage." I don't add that stuff. So, at this location, I could have a conversation with a friendly guy (with a very hipster mustache, so...) about espresso roasts and flavors, and I felt like I was engaged in a two way discussion about what I like and the beans they roast. No one was too cool for this 40+ year old mom, and I got a great, smooth double shot of espresso to enjoy. I tried the downtown location the next day. The coffee was equally good, but I felt... less "embraced", shall we say, by the prettier, tidier, and overall less comfortable (to me!) shop. I had to pay for parking downtown, and had to circle the block to park, so double the miles (from my parents' home) took me the same number of minutes. I'll be visiting the further out, less cool (so, to me, MORE cool) roastery location from now on. I just want an amazing shot with no pretense or hassle. I don't need to look any further, so why keep driving around? read more

There wasn't really a menu posted that I saw so when he asked me what I would like to order, I responded with it's my first time there and asked what he would recommend. He asked me a few questions and then recommended the Moscova (I don't know if that's how it's spelled). He said it's their signature drink. It was good, but $6 for a 16oz. If it had tasted drastically better than what I order at Blackrock, I would say it's worth it, but it tasted similar to what I would get for over a dollar less elsewhere. I will probably go back again and see if something without flavoring shines more. Also, a lot of reviews talk about pastries, but I only saw some cookies. Maybe they had sold through the good stuff by the time I got there at 8:45, but who knows. I'll update this after I try them again. read more
