I've always wondered why Compass had long lines. It was a quiet Sunday morning and we were close, so we swung in. We got our order in fast and the coffee was ready in a few minutes. Very busy place! They handled the long line with charm and it moved easy. All drinks I saw with customers looked well made and delicious. Basket case was full of items I wanted one of each of. Coffee shop with the cutest aesthetics! Just adorable! The service was quick and they were super friendly! I ordered an iced matcha latte sweetened with vanilla as it normally comes unsweetened. I also got a pistachio croissant which I had warmed. It was giant but yummy and not overly sweet which I appreciated. They were quite busy and there was a lot of people working on their laptops here. This place is already heavily reviewed and it's pretty positive. It's not a bad spot at all. It's inside a very old building and has that mid entry building smell. I am surprised that the coffee smell didn't overcome it. It must be very powerful. They were sold out of all the bakery goods which doesn't surprise me since the line was never shorter that 5 people waiting. The space is cramped for the amount of foot traffic they have. This brings us finally to the coffee. It is good. Not the finest cup I have ever had but far from the worst. The 7.50 for an oat milk latte seemed a little steep. It's at the top end of the price range for the quality and atmosphere provided. I think they could really use a second coffee machine. My favorite thing to order here is their cold brew with cold foam. It's smooth, flavorful, and never bitter. They get the balance right every time. I also have to call out their chocolate chip cookie. It's perfectly crisp, rich, and easily a great choice alongside coffee. Perfect combo if you want something sweet with your drink. I used to love going to compass when they first opened and would tell everyone to go there, but in the past few years it has become a place to avoid and not recommend. Their service has become horrible to everyone but their "friends ". Being very rude and arrogant, and making you feel like you are bothering them just to order your beverage. It is extremely unwelcoming. You will be lucky to get your drink within 15 minutes, as they pick and choose who's drink they want to make next... their friends will get their drinks before you even if they ordered after you. The Coffee taste burnt, and no choices on a dark bean or light ( they used to have options when first opened) and the menu items are highly overpriced making it an unaffordable option for anyone on a budget. I passed by this place multiple times and noticed that it was always packed no matter the time of day. I never got to go in until recently to do a study session. To be honest nothing about this place was very unique, whether it was the coffee or menu. The space is small, but effectively used with its woody and earthy interior. There's some outside seating which I actually really love; on a beautiful summer morning that would be the ideal place to sit and chat with others. On the day I went, it was quite loud, which I expected given the popularity of this cafe. I'm disappointed to say that the quality has significantly decreased. They are often out of pastries, beverages, and the coffee has been inconsistent. Service was once fast and friendly but now it seems slow, unprofessional, and aloof. The barista was sniffing shots with his nose practically touching the espresso then poured it into empty cups, letting it sit (get bitter) while prepping milk for 3 other beverages. One of the two baristas dumped water for my pour over before walking off to have a conversation with friends even though there was still a line of customers. By the time I received my coffee it was lukewarm and bitter. I definitely didn't leave feeling that they enjoyed making coffee or people for that matter. Lastly, the owners should clearly mark the floor or hang an "order here" sign because several customers were waiting only to be told that they were in the wrong area. The coffee was super bitter, although I do like my coffee a little on the potent side, this was over doing it. It was overall overpriced and not the best coffee. I got my kids a couple muffins and chocolate milk. The muffins were vegan and gluten free... they were awful. I eat gluten and am not a vegan, so maybe if I was they would have tasted fine. When my family and I were in town visiting relatives, my mission was to checkout coffee shops in the area. Compass was close to our airbnb and was recommended by our host and brother-in-law. Their recommendation was spot on. I base my judgement off my favorite specialty drink...the vanilla latte. When made properly, there's a balance of espresso and vanilla syrup. When it's not, either the espresso is overpowering or there's little to no espresso and syrup (I don't like to drink warm milk). It's safe to say the drink was to my liking (thank you baristas). Service was pretty good. Both times my husband and I visited it was busy. It was standing room only when we walked in. The line moved fairly quickly (knowing why I wanted helped a lot and we didn't have time to sit take in the scenery) though. read more

Everything was amazing here! The inside was beautifully decorated for the holidays. They had a nice seasonal selection of food and drinks. I had the Van Peppermint mocha which had a toasted marshmallow on top. I usually don't like peppermint mochas as they're overly sweet but this was perfect. For a coffee place in a place as close to Portland you just hold them to a higher standard.
